Tamás Kerekes Fatal Crash @ Vredestein Rallye 1998 (Aftermath)

The fifth edition of the Vredestein Rallye (named as Rallye Miskolc from 1994 to 1997 and since 2004 to date) was marred by a fatal accident happened just before start of seventh special stage, Perkupa - Szőlősardó, on Sunday, 14 June 1998.

Before the start of that stage, car numeral 0000 (so-called "zero" car, used by organizers for a final check of the sector as weak as to warn spectators about the start of the special stage), driven by an unnamed crew from Miskolc, suddenly came upon three young people who tried to run across the road right before the vehicle. The driver attempted to avoid colliding with them but one, 19-year old Tamás Kerekes, was hit by the zero car and killed instantly.

Following the accident the seventh special stage was cancelled. János Tóth Jr and Ferenc Gergely were overall winners of the rally.
