01:15And as a result, Hugo has been given a five-place grid drop
01:20for both races this weekend,
01:22something that could prove pivotal in the championship.
01:27Well, as you saw, we're going to have Group A going out first.
01:30This is one of a few tracks where we split the drivers into two groups.

01:37The even numbers will be going out first.
01:39The odd numbers after that, they will get 10 minutes each,

01:57which could prove this pivotal.
01:59Yeah, it was a bit of a strange incident, really,
02:02at the end of practice, slightly unnecessary,
02:04and has definitely put a spanner in the works
02:06of Hugo Ugachucu's championship bid.
02:09It was with Matteo Di Paolo,
02:10who is his championship rival, Freddie Slater's teammate,
02:12although, actually, Di Paolo wasn't proven to do anything wrong.
02:16So, unfortunately, Ugachucu's got a bit of an uphill battle this weekend,
02:21although qualifying and grid position
02:23are less important here than at most other circuits.
02:26In fact, as you mentioned in the practice session earlier, Chris,
02:29no one has ever won from pole here at Monza,
02:32which doesn't mean that pole isn't an advantage.
02:35It just means that the way things have played out,
02:36it's not maybe as important as other circuits
02:39because overtaking is certainly possible,
02:41and even more so this year with the addition
02:43of an additional third DRS zone down to the Parabolica.

02:49In terms of the championship,
02:51Freddie Slater has an eight-point lead
02:54over Ugachucu coming in to the penultimate round of the season.

03:34Why only 10 minutes?
03:35Well, we have this in Monaco
03:37because Monaco is a small, tight circuit,
03:39but plenty of space around the 3.6 miles,
03:435.8 kilometers of Monza circuit.
03:45But because the tow is so powerful around here
03:48due to the long, full throttle time
03:50and the long straights,
03:52drivers tend to want to find someone to follow
03:55so that they can get a slipstreamer,
03:56extra speed boost from the reduced drag
03:59of following another car down the straights.
04:01And in years gone by,
04:02that has caused traffic and, well, let's be frank,
04:05chaos in the session.
04:07So, to reduce the danger,
04:08they split the session into two,
04:10give them basically just enough time
04:11to do one run each
04:12and each driver will compete
04:14in one of the 10 sessions.
04:15Last year, we saw that session one,
04:17there was still a bit of jostling for position
04:19and a few drivers caught out.
04:20And then session two, everyone was better behaved.
04:22They went out earlier,
04:23got two or three flying laps in
04:25and was actually the faster of the two sessions,
04:27which is why I think we're seeing drivers
04:28going out on circuit a little earlier
04:31this first session than we saw last season.
04:34Although they are coming straight back into the pits.
04:36Now, is that Brando trying to swap his position
04:38or are they just putting an outlap
04:40on a set of tyres, I wonder?
04:41I think that's more of an outlap on a set of tyres,
04:44just getting the tyres gently bedded in.
04:46Because you're only going to get one run,
04:49because you only have time for one real run
04:51and only one or two push, three flying laps.
04:55The tyres need to be prepared absolutely perfectly.
04:59There's no opportunity for banker laps, really,
05:01that we normally have in a sort of 20-minute,
05:03half an hour qualifying session as we normally have.
05:05Because you don't go out, set a lap time,
05:07come in and change tyres and go again.
05:08It's basically a one-shot wonder here.
05:11So you have to have everything absolutely perfect
05:13in terms of tyre preparation, brake temperature.
05:17The engines need to be up to temperature.
05:18You have to be mentally dialled in.
05:20You have to find your space on circuit,
05:22both in terms of space for you to set a comparative
05:25and competitive lap,
05:26but also maybe try and get in the tow of the car ahead
05:30without getting blocked by them.
05:31But it's a risk versus reward situation.
05:33Because if you follow one, two, three, four drivers,
05:36they can, if they make a mistake,
05:38they're going to distract you,
05:39maybe throw gravel on the road
05:40or even cause a yellow flag
05:41so you can't improve your time.
05:44Well, let's hear from one of the championship contenders,
05:48Ugo Gachukwu.
05:49He has a five-pace grid drop for both races this weekend.
05:52So a lot of work to do in qualifying.
