00:00МУЗЫКАЛЬНАЯ ЗАСТАВКА
00:40Summer break over before we went into it.
00:43It was a trip to Hungary for around seven of the season in Formula 3.
00:48We had our top two in the championship towards the front.
00:51Three drivers who came together in the sprint race
00:53would once again come together on the opening lap of the feature race.
00:57Sugo Ugochiku charged his way through the field
01:00to catch up with championship rival Freddy Slater.
01:03For Fernando Barrichello, it would be an early exit.
01:06We saw the top two in the championship go head-to-head in the final two laps,
01:10but it would be Freddy Slater who took his first win in Formula 3.
01:14And with that, the championship lead away from Ugochiku
01:18by eight points going in to the final two rounds of the season.
01:24In the summer break, we've seen the drivers testing at the new Madring circuit.
01:29That is where we will visit to conclude the season next weekend.
01:32But first up is a trip to Monza this weekend,
01:36and we have 45 minutes of practice to get us started this weekend.
01:41Welcome back, everyone.
01:42Great to have you with us.
01:43So you can see your points to the left very much a two-horse race
01:46going in to the final two rounds.
01:49My name is Chris McCarthy.
01:50Piers Pryor, it's great to be back, isn't it, in Formula 3.
01:53So good to be back, and great to be at Monza as well.
01:56Traditionally, it was the end of the season.
01:58We saw an incredible end to the 2024 season here.
02:02Came down to the last lap of the season at Parabolica, Albaretto Curve.
02:05But this year, we've got, of course, the new edition Madring.
02:08We'll look forward to that.
02:09But before then, we've got a lot of high-speed running,
02:12fastest average speed on the calendar, lots of straight-line speed,
02:17an additional DRS to make it three DRS zones this year.
02:20So the two remaining DRS zones from last year, down towards Ascari,
02:24and then down towards Turn 1, but also an additional one on the exit of Ascari
02:28towards the Parabolica, the last corner.
02:30So that will mean that the drivers can get closer,
02:32potentially affect more overtaking opportunities.
02:35and make the most of their races and make some moves,
02:39which we often see at Monza, with the long straights,
02:41characterised by lots of flat-out running here at Monza.
02:44The first time this has not been the season finale since 2021,
02:48when the season finale was at Sochi.
02:51There you can see the team's championship, Campos Racing,
02:54really doing a great job, of course, going into Madring.
02:58That's going to be a home race for them.
03:00They'll be hoping to wrap up the team's championship
03:02for a second year in a row.
03:04But what a head-to-head battle we have,
03:06and I think we can very much call it that now.
03:08Teofil Nile will need a good weekend to bring himself
03:11back into realistic contention of winning this championship.
03:15But, Piers, a reminder to the fans
03:18that we do have an additional feature race next weekend as well.
03:21So 67 points up for grabs next weekend in total, 39 this weekend.
03:26Yeah, double-header for Madring,
03:28so that keeps the championship very much alive.
03:30No one can win this weekend.
03:32We'll go to the final event of the season,
03:35whether it's the final race, results will tell.
03:39Teofil Nile, we're looking at right there, the number one car,
03:41so the team's champions in Campos last year.
03:44He's a returning driver.
03:45He was hoping to be in the championship hunt, as you mentioned, Chris.
03:48Because Teofil realistically needs Freddy and Ugo
03:51to have at least a couple of non-scores
03:53while he scores heavily to have any chance.
03:56It really is a 1v1 battle, like we saw in Hungary.
04:00That was incredible watching, wasn't it, Chris,
04:02to see our two championship protagonists go wheel-to-wheel, man-on-man.
04:07It was proper, proper racing,
04:09and I hope we see plenty more of that this season.
04:11And I expect to see some of that this weekend as well,
04:14because Ugo Chukwu last year was strong here.
04:18Unfortunately, the race results didn't show the pace he had.
04:21He was unlucky in the races, but was quick in practice
04:22and then was quick in qualifying.
04:24He headed up his group in qualifying,
04:27because we have split qualifying, which we'll get on to.
04:29And then Freddy Slater with Trident.
04:31Trident was strong last year,
04:32because that car made up 42 positions over the race weekend.
04:36Yeah, it was a huge weekend, wasn't it?
04:38Ricardo Escoto back with us for the remainder of the season.
04:42A new livery for AIX as well.
04:44We also have another new driver in Alex Powell,
04:47who'll be taking the seat of Louis Sharp for the remainder of the season.
04:52And here is a look at Alex Powell,
04:55the American driver who's been racing in the EuroCup 3 championship this year.
04:59Has a good pedigree across the F4 categories
05:02and Formula regional categories,
05:04and has experience racing with this team.
05:07And no doubt this will be a bit of a test for him
05:10before, I'm sure, we might see him back on the grid full-time next year.
05:14Yeah, it's a tough place to make your F3 debut.
05:17We saw Fernando Barrichello make his F3 debut here last season.
05:20Struggled a little bit,
05:21because the thing with Monza is such long straight,
05:25such a high percentage flat out running means
05:28that we run very low downforce here,
05:30very skinny flat wings,
05:31so that the cars can cut their way through the air.
05:35There is an updated livery for AIX there.
05:38But that means that through the corners,
05:40you have less aerodynamic grip than you would expect.
05:43And what with track temperatures being high as well this weekend,
05:46we're expecting mid-30s for most of the sessions
05:48or most of the running this weekend.
05:50That makes the tyres, you know, they can fall away as well.
05:54And what they're being so high speed as well,
05:56very high commitment around here.
05:57And when you're joining a season halfway through
05:59and all the drivers are very much in tune and up to speed,
06:02doesn't make things easy, but Alex Powell will give it a good go.
06:04And he's in a spot with his fluorescent yellow helmet in that Prima car.
06:08Yeah, it really is.
06:09Tappenden became the first finish driver to take.
06:11A pole position in Formula 3 when we went out at Hungary,
06:17finishing fifth place in that race in the end.
06:19That's a real head-to-heads with Teofil.
06:22Niall just coming in towards the first corner now.
06:24I'm sure everyone's waiting for us, Piers,
06:27to talk about the new team next year.
06:29We'll come to that in a bit.
06:30First of all, we've got a car go off there.
06:32James Wharton through the Lesmos.
06:34Yeah, Lesmos, the two right-handers at the end of the middle sector.
06:37They are pretty tricky, actually.
06:39Again, that's an example of a tricky corner where normally in Formula 3
06:43with higher wings, you can lean on the downforce.
06:45Just cars move around a bit more there.
06:47And the exit, especially with Lesmos 2, crucial
06:50because you've got the long run flat out, down and up towards the sky.
06:54Let's have a look and see what happened with James here.
06:56Breaking into Lesmos 2, short apex, so the turning point is critical.
07:00Just a bit of oversteer.
07:01Often happens because the track drops away as you turn in
07:04and then compresses and goes uphill at the exit.
07:06So if you just get a bit of understeer or oversteer as you turn in,
07:10it gets exaggerated and amplified as the track drops away towards the apex.
07:14And there's an example of it.
07:15Not an ideal start to a flat-out running for James Wharton,
07:19but I think cars should be all good to continue on.
07:22Yep, James Wharton rejoining on the exit of Lesmos 2.
07:26Even more critical this year, isn't it?
07:29Because it's now followed by two DRS zones.
07:32We've got an additional one on the exit of the Ascari chicane.
07:35Yep, so we have a DRS zone here towards Ascari,
07:37which is the one that was one of the two that were here last year
07:41in the previous seasons.
07:42Then a new one, which starts about there.
07:45There you go, you see the DRS pop open.
07:47And then the remaining one also down towards Turn 1.
07:50So a bit of a tactical thought from the drivers.
07:52They're going to have to plan their overtakes
07:55because you may well use that DRS to get up the inside at Parabolica.
07:59But then you're going to be the one that's under attack down towards Turn 1.
08:04So will we see drivers potentially just use it to get closer
08:07and set up a move in towards Turn 1?
08:09But then when you're in the pack and there's nose-to-tail running,
08:12you might not be able to pass off an opportunity.
08:15And the teams and drivers who are most well-prepared
08:17will have already had a plan about what they're going to do where.
08:20Yeah, and three DRS zones in a row now.
08:24That means in total.
08:26Got some Italian drivers out there this weekend.
08:29will be looking to become the first Italian drivers to win here
08:33on home soil in FIA Formula 3.
08:35Forneroli became the first Formula 2 winner around here last year.
08:42And now Matteo Di Paolo will be amongst the Italian drivers
08:44along with the likes of Nicola La Corte, Brando Badouer as well,
08:48trying to put the Italian flag on the top step of the podium.
08:53There will be plenty of support for them this weekend, Piz.
08:55Oh, absolutely.
08:56The Italian fans, they love it, don't they?
08:57The Tifosi, they're going to be supporting their own.
09:00And we've got a few Italian drivers.
09:02We see some times coming in now,
09:04a little bit away from what we expect our qualifying pace to be.
09:07But also worth noting,
09:09the tyres that will be seen in qualifying in the races
09:11will be the Pirelli Soft Compound.
09:14That's the red cyble that you see right there.
09:16At the moment, all the teams and drivers
09:18are using their carryover hard compound tyre
09:22from the test at the Madring.
09:23The first running at the Madring
09:25and the first in FAA Formula 3
09:26ahead of the double-header feature finale to the season.
09:31And we'll touch on that a little bit.
09:33And then, of course, it's interesting to see
09:36that because we've had some running at the Madring,
09:38some drivers are already feeling in a good position
09:40to go into that event.
09:41Most notably, our two championship protagonists,
09:45as we've mentioned earlier on in this one,
09:47they were the two, I'd say,
09:48probably strongest drivers at that test.
09:51Just having a look at some replays here.
09:55You can see drivers looking for position.
09:57That's something we'll see in qualifying later,
10:00which will be split groups.
10:01Once again, the even numbers will go out first,
10:04followed by the odd numbers.
10:05They get two 10-minute sessions
10:07as we jump on board with Bruno Del Pino, Piers.
10:09Down towards Turn 1, big front-right lock-up there.
10:11That's something I think we'll see a fair amount of this weekend.
10:15And Monza does get a fair amount of use over the season
10:18in GT racing, another single-seater support or feeder series.
10:23But at the start of the weekend, the grip always comes up.
10:26This will be the lowest grip that we see all weekend.
10:28Just jump on board with our championship leader,
10:30affecting a move down towards Parabolica
10:33and then getting a big slide to the middle.
10:34Again, indicative of there being not very much grip at all
10:37and then getting repassed on the exit.
10:40Oh, and that's Michael Sheehan, isn't it,
10:42having a bit of a moment coming through Lesmo 1.
10:45Let's cover off that test then at the Magik.
10:49The videos of the Formula 3 cars going round.
10:52It was the first cars going round at full speed, wasn't it?
10:56And definitely got the views on social media.
10:59It looked absolutely superb, didn't it, the circuit?
11:03Freddie Slater amongst the drivers saying
11:05it's, for him, the best circuit on the calendar,
11:08one of his favourites to drive.
11:10All the drivers seemed to absolutely love it, didn't they, the circuit?
11:14Yeah, it looks like it's going to be a real challenge for the drivers.
11:16There's plenty of technical challenge
11:19and also a high-speed street circuit.
11:21There was parallels being drawn to Monaco and Macau.
11:25So play into the hands of the likes of Ugachuku and Niall,
11:28who have both won at Macau in the race there at the end of the year,
11:33which will be coming up after the Formula 3 season.
11:35Nakamura provisionally pops it into the 39s,
11:39the first driver to do so.
11:40So we're getting closer and closer to the times
11:42as the drivers get their eye in
11:44and the circuit rubbers up ever so slightly.
11:46This is the first session of the weekend,
11:49the first racing cars that have gone round at speed
11:50here at Monza so far in 2026 on the F1 calendar.
11:55Extremely excited for the Madring,
11:57but of course we have to come to Monza first,
12:01our usual season finale.
12:03It always puts on a very good show for Formula 3.
12:06And Formula 3, Formula 2 taking over the headlines
12:10coming into this weekend around the Formula 1 paddock.
12:13Of course, there's Lando Norris announcing his new LN4 Fusion team,
12:19which will take the place of AIX Racing on the grid next season.
12:23The team being co-founded by the reigning world champion.
12:27And we will have Rene Rosen,
12:29who took this team here, Prima Racing, to over 40 titles.
12:33He'll be coming back in as team principal.
12:35Guillaume Capietto, who he's worked closely with,
12:38will serve as the race director for the team's wider operation.
12:42The team are going to be racing in Formula 3, Formula Regional,
12:47Italian F4 confirmed entries there,
12:49and they have submitted an application for an entry into Formula 2
12:53and for British F4 as well.
12:55What news this is for the world of single-seater spheres.
12:59A brief yellow flag out there, but brilliant news, wasn't it?
13:03And absolutely took over the paddock when Lando announced this
13:06on Wednesday evening, revealing his cars.
13:09It caused a big stir in the world of motorsport.
13:11A lot of people talking about it
13:13and a lot of people talking about Formula 3 as well,
13:15which is great to see because we want more people
13:17watching incredible racing in Formula 3
13:19and the future of the sport.
13:22These drivers at the top of this championship
13:24will be the drivers that we'll be watching in Formula 1
13:26in years to come.
13:28And it's great to have the attention of Formula 1 driver
13:32and Lando also talking about his academy
13:35and how he's going to be helping some drivers
13:37make their way to the top of the sport as well,
13:39both in support and financial backing,
13:41alongside the team entry as well.
13:44Dan Hazelwood, who has taken the Fusion Motorsport kart team
13:48over the last 25 years,
13:50making it one of the most successful
13:52in British and European karting as well,
13:54will be a really great asset on board with that team.
13:58And Lando's livery, very similar to the livery
14:01we saw him racing in Formula 2 back in 2018.
14:04We'll talk a little bit more about his legacy program
14:07in just a second.
14:09Just watching the Trident car coming through the final corner
14:13now making its way up towards the start-finish line.
14:16Got to get a good exit out of there
14:18as we head down the start-finish straight,
14:21looking at to Hiyu Yamakoshi,
14:23Freddie Slater coming into the pit lane.
14:27P10 for him currently.
14:29Let's talk about this LM4 legacy program then, Piers.
14:32A fully funded driver development program
14:36by Lando Norris.
14:37The program will be operated by ADD Management,
14:40who've helped Lando get up to where he is in Formula 1.
14:45They also look after this driver here,
14:47Freddie Slater, Ugo Gachiku, and Zayn Maloney as well.
14:51And speaking of Freddie Slater,
14:53let's hear what he's had to say about his time
14:56in Formula 3 so far coming into the weekend.
14:59The rookie leading the championship.
15:03We're getting to the final part of the season.
15:05You know, I've really enjoyed my time in Formula 3
15:07and it's been an incredible championship.
15:09Budapest was a very strong weekend for us.
15:11It's kind of been a chain of events.
15:14We've had some good performances
15:15and now we've finally got that win to good execution
15:18and also some good race pace
15:19and we managed it really well.
15:20So nice time to do it as well,
15:22obviously before the summer break,
15:23obviously having a bit of time off now.
15:25And now we get ready for Monza and Madrid,
15:27which should be very interesting,
15:28very two different tracks
15:29and a lot of chaos to be had.
15:32And yeah, I can't wait for it.
15:34I think he summed that up quite nicely, didn't he?
15:37Everyone very excited for it.
15:39It's been an incredibly impressive season for Freddie,
15:42hasn't it?
15:42Fighting with Ugo, the two of them,
15:44we saw fighting away for a single-seater championship
15:47in New Zealand at the start of the year,
15:50the Formula Regional Oceana.
15:51And it's that feature race we had at Hungary,
15:55is a sign that is starting to heat up.
15:57I think that was the start of our entry
16:00into what's going to be a very entertaining championship fight.
16:03Oh, Chris, I'm licking my lips at the prospect
16:05of more inter-championship rival battles.
16:08And as I said earlier, I think we're going to get it
16:10because these two are really pushing themselves
16:13kind of clear of the rest of the field,
16:15not only in terms of points,
16:16but also in terms of every session.
16:18They topped most of the sessions between them
16:20at the Mad Ring,
16:21so I expect them to be quick there.
16:22Ugochiku was strong here last year.
16:24Slater's been strong here in previous Formula as well.
16:27And it really is nothing between them
16:30in terms of points.
16:30But also, if you look at their championship points
16:33over the season,
16:33they pretty followed each other, really.
16:35Ugochiku earlier on in the season
16:36just had a bit of an advantage.
16:38Then that basically a non-score in Spa
16:41really hurt his championship battle.
16:42But I'm looking forward to seeing them do battle.
16:45Great for Slater to get his first win under his belt.
16:48Podiumed in every event so far this year,
16:50but hadn't quite got a win until last time out.
16:52But a very different challenge,
16:54the Hungaroring versus Monza.
16:56Yeah, Ugochiku losing the championship lead
16:59for the first time.
17:01Taffanen getting pole position last time out.
17:03Ferrari Driver Academy member as well.
17:05So this will be a big race for him.
17:08We'll want to put that badge
17:09on the top step of the podium.
17:12Just going back to this legacy program
17:14that Lando's launched,
17:16please.
17:16I want to get your thoughts on this.
17:17One of the things he said
17:18in his interview on Wednesday
17:19is he actually,
17:21well, in his driver debriefs,
17:22watch the F2, the F3,
17:25and also the F4 categories as well.
17:28And he said,
17:29these championships
17:30are often more entertaining
17:32to watch than Formula One.
17:33And to have now his own car
17:35and his own drivers as well,
17:37which he's going to be helping,
17:39funding through this legacy program,
17:41putting the people around them as well.
17:44That was one of the main projects here
17:47that he said,
17:48as a race driver,
17:49and you'll know this from your time,
17:50it's not just about getting in the car and going.
17:52You need the people around you as well
17:54to help you on a weekend
17:55because Formula Three
17:56often described
17:57as the most competitive championship
17:59in single-seater racing.
18:00I think it's rightly so.
18:02When you've got 30 cars on the grid,
18:03we often have the top 20 or so
18:05covered by a second or less.
18:08And he's absolutely right
18:09about the entertainment.
18:09Formula Three, I think,
18:10is arguably the biggest bang
18:12for your buck entertainment
18:13alongside Formula Two.
18:15Example of that,
18:16just go back,
18:16if you've got some time this weekend,
18:18go back and watch
18:18the feature race especially
18:21from Monza here last year,
18:23which was one of the best races
18:24in Formula Three history,
18:26one of the best races I've ever seen.
18:27And I expect to see more of that this weekend.
18:29But great to see Lando
18:31acknowledging that he had
18:32a really good team around him
18:34when he was coming up
18:34through the single-seater feeder series
18:36and also that he had the funding
18:39to be able to make it happen.
18:40But a lot of drivers
18:41don't have the luxury
18:42of the people around them
18:43straight away off the bat
18:44and the funding to go racing
18:46because motorsport is an inescapably
18:48and expensive sport
18:49compared to, you know,
18:50like, I don't know,
18:51football, for example,
18:52just to do.
18:52Therefore, you need the funding
18:54to be able to do the sport
18:55to show what you can do.
18:56And Lando really getting involved
18:58in all aspects of the LN Fusion,
19:02his academy programme,
19:04to allow drivers the opportunity
19:05to show what they can do going forward.
19:08Yeah, it's fantastic to see
19:09a driver who has completed
19:11his goals of not just
19:13getting to Formula One,
19:14but then becoming world champion
19:15and now putting money back
19:17in to find the next Formula One
19:20world champion.
19:21And that is the idea
19:22of the LM4 legacy programme.
19:24And he knows how important it is
19:26to have that team around you
19:28in the paddock
19:29when you go racing
19:30in something like Formula Three.
19:33We don't know who the first driver is
19:34in that legacy programme just yet,
19:36but we do know the initiative
19:37will be led by Julian Rouse,
19:39who has experience leading
19:40the Alpine Academy.
19:42So there's some big names leading.
19:43This LM4 Fusion and Legacy
19:45programme project, Piers,
19:47and it now means you can go
19:48to Fusion Motorsport,
19:49seven years old,
19:51do your first kart race
19:52and stay within the same family
19:53all the way to Formula Two.
19:55And that's something
19:56we have never seen before
19:57in this sport.
19:58I think it's worth touching
19:59on Fusion there actually as well,
20:00because everyone has heard
20:02of Lando Norris and LM4,
20:03but many people outside of karting
20:05especially won't have heard
20:06of Fusion.
20:07Now, they are new
20:08to single seater racing,
20:10but Chris, you and I
20:10have been involved in karting
20:11for decades,
20:13and they have been basically
20:14the team to beat
20:15at almost every level
20:16of karting for 15 years
20:18at least,
20:19and they are absolutely
20:20one of the driving forces
20:22in this project
20:23and also in getting young drivers
20:25the opportunity
20:26to hone their skills.
20:28And many of the drivers
20:29on the current F2, F3
20:30and other feeder series grids
20:32have raced for Fusion
20:33in karting
20:34and basically cut their teeth
20:35with that team.
20:35So, to have them involved
20:37as well is great
20:39to see that team grow
20:40and be able to give
20:41the platform to,
20:42as you mentioned, Chris,
20:43take a driver from,
20:44let's say,
20:45six, seven years old
20:46all the way through
20:47to the cusp of Formula One.
20:49Freddie Slater
20:50was a driver for Fusion
20:51from the very early days
20:54he started karting.
20:55In fact, when he started,
20:56his younger brother
20:56now races with them
20:58in the cadet karting leagues
21:00as well.
21:01Taylor Barnards,
21:02who is a Formula E race winner,
21:03Chris Lullum,
21:05as well as Zach O'Sullivan,
21:06Finn McLaughlin,
21:07Johnny Edgar,
21:08who was also a winner here.
21:10Very excited
21:11to hear more about this.
21:13Well, from Freddie Slater,
21:15let's go to his championship rival,
21:17Uga Chukwu in here,
21:18how he's feeling
21:18going into these last two rounds.
21:20Let's hear from the American.
21:23Yeah, feeling good, you know.
21:25I think all the hard work
21:26of the season
21:28all comes down, you know,
21:29to these last two rounds
21:30and, yeah,
21:31it's going to be important
21:31to perform
21:32and pick up the points here.
21:35Monza's always interesting.
21:36You know,
21:37the racing's always
21:37very entertaining,
21:38so it'll be important
21:40to keep it clean
21:40and get some points
21:41and Madrid as well,
21:43you know,
21:44I think it'll be really nice,
21:45a bit of a street circuit
21:47to end it off.
21:48So, yeah,
21:49it'll just be about maximizing
21:50what we can there as well.
21:54It's going to be
21:55very interesting
21:56going into these last two rounds.
21:57How do you think
21:58Uga and Freddie
21:59are going to be feeling?
22:00They've had a bit of a,
22:01they've had quite a while
22:02to think about
22:02how they're going to attack
22:04these last two rounds,
22:05haven't they,
22:05with that summer break.
22:06What's going to be going
22:07through their minds
22:08coming into this weekend
22:09as we can see something
22:10coming out the back
22:10of Mateo Kornagi's car there?
22:12Yeah,
22:12that's some fluid.
22:13The car sat station
22:14just overheating slightly.
22:15That won't be a big issue.
22:16That's why he aborted
22:17his practice start.
22:18I think he'll just go around
22:18and cool the car,
22:19maybe have another go.
22:20But, yes,
22:21on the mindset
22:22of our two championship rivals,
22:24they're both drivers
22:25that have been
22:25in this position before
22:26in multiple times,
22:28to be honest.
22:28They're serial winners,
22:30serial championship winners.
22:32Uga Chiku won a championship
22:33this season,
22:34the Formula Regional Oceania
22:35down under
22:37earlier on this season.
22:38Freddie Slater
22:38was Formula Regional
22:39Europe champion last year.
22:41So they're going to be
22:42in a position to try and,
22:44you know,
22:44basically,
22:45they know what they're doing.
22:46They've got the pace
22:47and they're going to be
22:49just basically pushing each other
22:50and doing everything they can
22:51to put themselves
22:52in the best position.
22:52Because it's basically
22:53if they beat each other
22:54weekend on weekend
22:55or in every race going forward,
22:57because they're so close on points,
22:59they're going to be the one
23:00that comes out on top.
23:01So it really is 1v1.
23:02Freddie Slater's not giving
23:03anything away, is he?
23:04Because every time he looks
23:05like he's going to go
23:06for an on-board lap,
23:06he pulls into the pit lane.
23:08So he's showing
23:08absolutely nothing, is he,
23:10in this practice session.
23:11Exactly.
23:11Maybe he sees the on-board camera
23:12and they go,
23:12no, no, don't show everyone
23:13what you're going to do for them.
23:14Don't show.
23:16Matteo Di Paolo,
23:17a good chance for him.
23:18We saw him win on circuit,
23:20didn't we,
23:21at Silverstone?
23:22That win was later
23:24taken away from him
23:25due to investigation
23:26after the race.
23:28But it's been a difficult season
23:29for him here.
23:30He was fighting
23:31with Freddie Slater
23:33coming into Monza
23:34in Formula Regional
23:35last season.
23:36But if he can go
23:36and get a podium here
23:37for him,
23:38that will really boost
23:39his confidence back up.
23:41And do you think
23:41for someone like
23:43Matteo Di Paolo,
23:44that summer break
23:45will be a good chance
23:46just to have a reset?
23:47I think the summer break
23:48would have been
23:48a great reset for Matteo.
23:50He's, as you mentioned,
23:51had a difficult season,
23:52currently sitting 22nd
23:54in the standings
23:55when his teammate
23:56Slater is leading the way.
23:57And they were the two
23:58that were going head-to-head
23:59in Formula Regional
24:00Europe last season.
24:02And so he would have,
24:03it's definitely
24:04under expectations
24:05for Matteo
24:05by his own standards.
24:07But he's shown
24:08flashes of brilliance,
24:09hasn't he?
24:09That win in Silverstone
24:11on the road,
24:11unfortunately,
24:12technical post-race
24:13has nothing to do
24:14with his driving.
24:15Took that away from him
24:16and he also had
24:17a fourth place
24:17earlier this year
24:18as well.
24:20That was the sprint race
24:21at Silverstone 2.
24:22So that would have been
24:23a strong weekend.
24:24But he knows Monza,
24:25he knows Monza well.
24:26It's a home race for him.
24:27End of this,
24:28getting towards the end
24:28of the season,
24:29nothing to lose really.
24:30So he'll be looking
24:31to just push on
24:32and try and have
24:32a strong end of the year
24:33because he'll be hoping
24:34to come back next year
24:35even stronger
24:36and have a proper
24:37championship push.
24:39Pedro Claro
24:40in the Lesmos once again.
24:41Seems to be where
24:42they're getting all caught out.
24:43Just a bit too much speed
24:44through the first section.
24:45Yeah.
24:46Just slightly too eager
24:47on the throttle
24:48to get the good exit.
24:49two wheels on the gravel
24:50will have hurt
24:50his exit speed
24:51but no lasting damage.
24:54Noah Stromstead
24:55we look at now
24:56who has just found himself
24:58dropping a couple
24:58of positions
24:59in the standings
25:00with no score.
25:01We've talked a lot
25:02about the fight
25:03for the championship lead
25:04but third place
25:05in the championship
25:06it's really starting
25:07to get very close
25:08isn't it?
25:08Terfil now on 75 points.
25:11Taito Kato won 45.
25:13So just 30 there
25:14from third down
25:15to P12
25:16in the standings.
25:17it's around
25:19where we could see
25:20some big swings
25:21in terms of that
25:22start for third
25:24in the championship.
25:25Yeah and a third place
25:26in this year's championship
25:27would be a big tick
25:28for any of those drivers
25:29because you've got
25:30Slater and Igachuku
25:31basically head and shoulders
25:32above anyone else.
25:33To be able to say
25:34to either
25:35your perspective
25:36Formula 2 team
25:37or perspective
25:37Formula 3 team
25:38for next year
25:39depending on your plans
25:40then say
25:41I was the best
25:42of the rest
25:42is a good thing
25:44to have on your CV.
25:45We've also got
25:46a nice little battle
25:46in the teams championships
25:48as well.
25:48Campos have basically
25:49run away with it
25:50at the front of the field.
25:51Trident are fairly
25:52solid in second
25:54without any disasters
25:55but then you've got
25:56only
25:57what's that
25:5713 points
25:58between Van Amersfoort
25:59in second
26:00Roden in third
26:01Roden in fourth
26:02and ART
26:03in fifth place
26:04as well.
26:04So there's a big
26:05big battle for those teams
26:06to try and push
26:06and be the
26:07again kind of best
26:08of the rest
26:08behind the two teams
26:09who have taken
26:09all of the teams
26:10and drivers championships
26:11from the last few seasons.
26:13It's been a lot
26:14for the teams as well
26:15with good results
26:18comes the funding
26:19drivers as well.
26:21Let's have a look
26:21at Hiyu Yamakoshi
26:22in that fight
26:23for third
26:23in the championship.
26:25This is an example
26:26of what we're going
26:26to have to struggle with
26:27throughout the practice
26:28qualifying and the races
26:30there.
26:30You can see Hiyu
26:30not particularly happy
26:31with that
26:31but the reason
26:33that Hiyu's not happy
26:34is because that car
26:35pulled in front of him
26:35and gave him
26:36dirty air
26:37through the Lesmo 2
26:38where you require
26:38the downforce
26:39but also
26:40the flip side of that
26:41is because we're
26:42flat out for so long
26:44around Monza
26:44the tow is enormous.
26:46We have spoken
26:48to the drivers
26:48previously
26:49around here
26:49in this generation
26:50of Formula 3 car
26:52a good tow
26:53a good slipstream
26:54around this circuit
26:55is worth anywhere
26:55between half a second
26:56and eight tenths
26:58of a second
26:59so this is exactly
27:00what we might see
27:01in the split
27:02qualifying sessions
27:03that's why we have
27:03the split qualifying sessions
27:04as well
27:05as drivers
27:05will be searching
27:06for basically
27:07they want to start
27:08a lap
27:09about a second
27:10behind the driver
27:11in front
27:11so that you get
27:12a nice hole
27:13being punched
27:14in the air
27:14so you're faster
27:15down the straights
27:16because around Monza
27:16you gain more
27:17in the straights
27:18than you lose
27:19in the corners
27:19whereas in Hungaroring
27:20they were doing
27:21the opposite
27:21they were trying
27:21to find clean air
27:22because of all
27:23the medium
27:24high speed corners
27:25and so they could
27:26have grip
27:26through the corners
27:27whereas
27:28the difference
27:29between a good lap
27:29and a bad lap
27:30on your own
27:31is two, three tenths
27:32whereas the difference
27:33between a tow
27:33and no tow
27:34is half second
27:35so that's why
27:36the tow
27:36is so important
27:38the other thing
27:39we could see
27:40is track limits
27:40as well
27:41we saw Powell
27:41drop down
27:42the order there
27:43he's gone back up
27:44again
27:44we are seeing
27:45a little bit of that
27:47around here
27:47as well
27:48coming out
27:49of the Lesmos
27:50out of Iscari
27:51as well
27:51so that's another
27:53thing you have
27:53to be wary of
27:55is the track limits
27:56four wheels
27:57over the white line
27:58and your lap
27:58gets deleted
27:59as we have
28:00a look back
28:01at Freddy Slater
28:01that looks like
28:02a good distance
28:03doesn't it
28:03for a tow
28:04this is about
28:04where you want
28:05to be in qualifying
28:06ideally
28:06is where you're
28:07not right underneath
28:08the rear wing
28:08of the car in front
28:09but there's a bit
28:09of a gap
28:10so you can pick
28:10your own braking
28:11points and have
28:12clear sight of the
28:13corners
28:13but that hole
28:14is being punched
28:15in the air
28:15the turbulent air
28:16off the back
28:16of the car in front
28:17means you have to
28:18punch less of a hole
28:19in the air
28:20for yourself
28:21you'll be able
28:21to use DRS
28:22of course
28:22but we're heading
28:23down towards
28:24underneath the old
28:25banked circuit
28:26towards Iscari
28:27chicane
28:27this is DRS
28:28zone number one
28:29on the lap
28:30and we break into
28:31Iscari
28:31technical corner here
28:32the car moves
28:33around the lot
28:33through here
28:34use the curves
28:35through the middle
28:35and then the exit
28:36here is when we'll
28:37have DRS zone 2
28:38the new DRS zone
28:39for 2026
28:40which will help
28:41drivers both
28:42straight line speed
28:43and qualifying
28:44but also to get
28:45closer or effective
28:46pass down to the
28:46last corner in the
28:47races
28:47and then breaking
28:48down to Parabolica
28:49we then have a DRS
28:51detection point 3
28:52there and then DRS
28:53zone 3 which opens
28:54out now
28:54the Prema current
28:55front going a bit
28:56wide
28:56and Slater once again
28:57backing off and
28:58coming into the pits
28:59there we go
29:01he's getting to that
29:02point in the lap
29:03and then coming in
29:03he is on the
29:04carryover hard tyre
29:05Tapinen just continues
29:06to get quicker
29:08Yamakoshi in second
29:09Kato and Lee have
29:10been in the pit lane
29:11for a little while
29:11Kanato Lee got his
29:13first podium last
29:14time out
29:14and jumping up to
29:15third
29:15Ernesto Rivera
29:17and I'd say he's
29:18been one of the
29:20surprises of the
29:20season in some ways
29:21because we saw him
29:23miss testing
29:24he missed the first
29:25round peers
29:25and now he's
29:27P4 in the
29:27championship
29:28despite missing
29:29that first round
29:30he's had two
29:31podiums in the
29:32last five races
29:33including that win
29:34he got at Spa
29:35as well
29:35he's been a very
29:36good entry into
29:37the championship
29:38hasn't he?
29:39Absolutely
29:39and Ernesto Rivera
29:41have been very
29:41impressive indeed
29:42he's on a good
29:43scoring run as
29:44well as scored
29:44in the last five
29:45races
29:46so he's up there
29:48with in fact
29:49he's one of the
29:49only drivers to
29:50have done so
29:50potentially
29:52along with
29:52Tapinen
29:53the only driver
29:54to have done so
29:54in the last four
29:55races
29:55so you know
29:56very strong
29:56pace
29:57started the season
29:58on the back foot
29:58didn't seem to
30:00affect him
30:00and now is
30:01as you mentioned
30:02Chris
30:02he's putting himself
30:03in a good position
30:03to potentially even
30:04go past his
30:06teammate of
30:07Niall
30:08who was an
30:09early season
30:09favourite
30:10Absolutely
30:11and it's getting
30:12to the point
30:12of the season
30:14where drivers
30:14will be looking
30:15towards next year
30:16and there'll be
30:16Formula 2 teams
30:18looking out
30:19Ernesto Rivera
30:19no doubt
30:21Red Bull Racing
30:22will be very happy
30:23with what they've
30:23seen
30:24so we're going
30:25over to the
30:25switch here
30:26we had the
30:26carry over
30:27hard tyre
30:27appears
30:28and now it
30:28looks like
30:28those soft tyres
30:29going on
30:29Yeah we're
30:30going to see
30:30a bit of a
30:30qualifying simulation
30:31at the end
30:32of this session
30:3214 minutes
30:33remaining
30:33and the reason
30:34that we're
30:34actually going
30:35to see the
30:35drivers use
30:36the soft tyres
30:36in practice
30:37which they often
30:38say for qualifying
30:39is because
30:40normally the
30:41qualifying session
30:41is one session
30:42of about half an
30:43hour or so
30:44where the drivers
30:45do two
30:46maybe three
30:47runs on their tyres
30:48because they get
30:48three sets of
30:49the allocated tyre
30:50to use for
30:51qualifying in the
30:51races
30:51and they normally
30:53do at least two
30:53runs
30:54they'll do a new
30:54set at the start
30:56of qualifying
30:56they'll come and
30:57change them and
30:58then do another new
30:58set at the end of
30:59qualifying to try and
31:00set their ultimate
31:00grid position
31:01whereas because it's a
31:03split qualifying here
31:04in Monza
31:04because we've seen
31:06some busyness and
31:09tomfoolery is a good
31:10way of putting it
31:11we saw some cars
31:12bunching up and with
31:1330 cars on circuit
31:14all looking for a tow
31:15it was dangerous
31:15so we split the
31:16session into two
31:17ten minute sessions
31:18of which each driver
31:19competes in only one
31:20so therefore they
31:21only have time to
31:21do one run
31:22so therefore that
31:24is no advantage to
31:25saving that extra
31:26set of new tyres
31:27so basically they
31:28are going to put on
31:29one of their soft
31:30tyres at the end
31:31of this session
31:31so they can get
31:32their eye and feel
31:32what the car's like
31:33on the softer tyre
31:34because there is
31:35always a difference
31:36in grip and also
31:37difference in balance
31:38between the harder
31:39and softer compound
31:40tyres and then
31:42they'll have a better
31:42position both in
31:43terms of their
31:44feeling and also
31:45for the engineers
31:45to have a look at
31:46how the car was
31:47behaving so that
31:48they can set
31:48themselves up for
31:49that one run
31:50and qualifying
31:52absolutely so
31:53and we can see
31:55the Noah Stromstead
31:56Freddy Slater
31:57cars there
31:59Matteo Di Paolo
31:59he's an Italian
32:00driver
32:01Trident an Italian
32:02team
32:03and we spoke
32:04to Giacomo Ricci
32:05coming in to the
32:05weekend from Trident
32:06about their home
32:07race
32:10well first of all
32:11it's always nice
32:12to be back
32:14racing in Monza
32:15it's our home
32:16race so we have
32:17a lot of fans
32:18here and of course
32:21also a lot of
32:21expectation at the
32:23same time so let's
32:24hope that the weekend
32:25will run smoothly
32:28season so far has
32:30been very positive
32:31I have to say
32:32Freddy has been
32:34very very consistent
32:35through the season
32:36and now we are
32:38very close to the
32:39last two race event
32:40whereas we know
32:42Monza is quite tricky
32:43especially the qualifying
32:44with all the tow and
32:45all the game that
32:47will be in place
32:48for the qualifying
32:50and only two group
32:52of ten minutes
32:52and then the final
32:54round will be in
32:55Madrid
32:57with the double
32:58future race
32:59so street circuit
33:01will make definitely
33:02very interested
33:03good to hear from
33:05Giacomo Ritchie there
33:06tried two wins for
33:08them around the
33:08circuit
33:09the one with
33:09Sammy Megatunif in
33:10that extraordinary
33:11season finale
33:12where we saw Leo
33:13Fornaroli become
33:14champion
33:15Zayn Maloney as
33:16well
33:16two pole positions
33:17with them
33:18Oli Goethe
33:19taking pole
33:20which confirmed
33:21Gabriel Bortoletto
33:22as the 2023 champion
33:24in the pit lane
33:24in qualifying
33:25Fornaroli took
33:26pole
33:27in 2024
33:28but as you mentioned
33:29that appears during
33:29that interview
33:30no one has won
33:31from pole position
33:31around here
33:32and our reigning
33:33champion Rafa
33:34Camera came from
33:3530th to 5th
33:36in the feature race
33:37so bad qualifying
33:39round here
33:40as you said
33:41not the worst thing
33:43it's not the worst
33:43thing I mean
33:44ideally you do
33:44still want to start
33:45on pole
33:45even though statistically
33:46it hasn't been
33:47successful for anyone
33:49you do want to be
33:50towards the front
33:51at least to give
33:51yourself the opportunity
33:52to go from
33:53the top 12
33:54in both races
33:55you still get the
33:55two points
33:56for pole position
33:56of course
33:57of course
33:58but yes
33:59basically we saw
34:00didn't we
34:00Rafa Camera
34:01last year
34:01track limits
34:02took away
34:02his lap
34:03he was one
34:04of the fastest
34:04I think he topped
34:05his session
34:05or was he second
34:06in his session
34:06off the top of my head
34:07then track limits
34:08on the exit
34:09of the Roger
34:09Chiquain
34:09meant that he
34:10started in 30th
34:11for both races
34:12but converted
34:1330th into 12th
34:14in the sprint race
34:14and then 30th
34:15to 5th
34:16in the feature
34:16so that was
34:17impressive
34:17showing the pace
34:19of the Trident
34:19car around here
34:20and also
34:21that if you have
34:22the speed
34:23and you have
34:23the confidence
34:24you can make moves
34:26so basically
34:27in the qualifying session
34:28the teams will be
34:28saying just get
34:29a solid lap
34:30with a good toe
34:31don't push over
34:32track limits
34:33because you've only
34:33got that one
34:34qualifying session
34:35there's no opportunity
34:36for banker laps
34:37that we often see
34:38in normal qualifying
34:39sessions with all
34:4030 cars on circuit
34:41because it's not like
34:42you go out
34:42you do one or two
34:44laps on your new tyre
34:45you come in
34:45and then you do
34:46another run
34:47you've only got 10 minutes
34:48so you're going to go out
34:49and do one run
34:50which you may only get
34:51one lap
34:52it was actually
34:53interesting last year
34:54the group one
34:55which was group A
34:56I think was the odd numbers
34:57they went out quite late
34:59in the 10 minute session
34:59they're all
35:00apart from three drivers
35:01only got one flying lap
35:03in qualifying
35:03but then the second session
35:05they went out earlier
35:05and got two or three
35:06flying laps
35:07and went much quicker
35:07so I expect to see
35:09more
35:09a tactic
35:10a bit more like that
35:11in the qualifying sessions
35:13coming up later on today
35:15Brando Badouer
35:15one of the Italian drivers
35:17looking to give
35:17the home fans
35:19a victory
35:19let's hear what the
35:20road and driver
35:21had to say
35:21coming into the weekend
35:25yeah
35:25it means a lot
35:26racing in Monza
35:27this weekend
35:27every Italian kid
35:29looks up at Monza
35:30the Temple of Speed
35:31the most historic
35:33and important track
35:33in Italy
35:34so it's special
35:35to race here
35:36in Formula 3
35:37in the F1 weekend
35:38and race in front
35:39of the Tifosi
35:40definitely
35:43great to hear
35:44from Brando
35:44and great work
35:45by our crew there
35:46to get that shot
35:48of Brando
35:49Badouer as well
35:50purple sectors
35:50being set
35:51in the pit lane
35:53great job
35:53with the camera
35:54operators in the pit lane
35:55making sure
35:55we get the shots
35:56that we need
35:56we saw them
35:57running
35:57running across
35:58the pit lane
35:59to make sure
35:59we got that shot
36:00of Brando
36:01take a well deserved
36:02break there
36:02in the background
36:03so interestingly
36:03all these cars
36:04look at this
36:04all these cars
36:05and they're brand new
36:06soft tyres
36:07going out
36:07with 8 minutes
36:08and 50 something
36:09seconds to go
36:11is it a coincidence
36:12that the qualifying
36:13sessions are 10 minutes
36:13I think not
36:14this is going to be
36:15some sort of
36:16qualifying simulation
36:17it's going to give us
36:18an idea of what
36:19we have to expect
36:20coming up later on
36:21today as
36:22Colnaghi
36:23spun on his
36:23brand new tyres
36:24that made me nervous
36:25for a second there
36:26Mattia Colnaghi
36:27just trying to
36:28get across
36:29one of the
36:30premier cars
36:30coming through
36:31but is that
36:32just a spin on
36:33cold tyres
36:34from Colnaghi
36:35coming out of pit lane
36:36easily done
36:37to be fair Chris
36:38the brand new
36:39slick tyres
36:40especially when you've
36:40got no tyre warmers
36:42as we have in Formula 3
36:43here we go
36:44let's have a look
36:44you so easy to just
36:45loop it round
36:46because it literally
36:47is like driving on ice
36:48on a brand new
36:49slick tyre
36:49because the surface
36:50is completely smooth
36:51and when it's cold
36:53you touch the throttle
36:54at the wrong place
36:55and the car's loaded up
36:55and it can go round
36:56but a bit embarrassing
36:58for Colnaghi
36:58but no harm done
36:59it won't harm the tyre
37:00he'll be able to just
37:01carry on with his
37:02normal warm-up procedure
37:03albeit slightly out of
37:04position from where
37:05he maybe wanted to be
37:06in the tow
37:06precisely that
37:07got back going
37:08again
37:09did Colnaghi
37:10that's the main thing
37:10as well
37:11so does get
37:12his qualifying run
37:13in
37:14MP currently watching
37:15on quickest so far
37:16Yamakoshi second
37:17La Corte
37:18the Italian
37:19driver for the
37:20dams team
37:21in third place
37:22Rivera in fourth
37:23then Carto
37:23in fifth
37:24Lee
37:25Deligny
37:26Ugachuku
37:26Badouer
37:27Colnaghi
37:28Barrichello doing well
37:29just outside the top
37:30ten Piers
37:30MP
37:31were arguably the
37:33strongest team
37:34in qualifying last year
37:34the only team to get
37:35all three of their cars
37:36in the top 12
37:37so MP
37:39looking like they're
37:40continuing on with that
37:40strong form around this
37:41circuit
37:42and characteristically
37:43MP always have good
37:44from my eyes anyway
37:45I've not driven all these
37:46cars from all these teams
37:47unfortunately
37:48but they seem like they
37:48have very good traction
37:50whenever you jump on board
37:51with an MP car
37:52they seem like they can
37:52get to power aggressively
37:53and traction
37:54is one of the key
37:55components to getting
37:56a fast lap around
37:57the Monza circuit
37:58we've got a lot of
37:59long high speed
38:00running in a straight line
38:02but also
38:02a lot of big braking zones
38:03and traction zones
38:04exit of the first chicane
38:06exit of the Roger chicane
38:08exit of Lesmo 2
38:09and then exit of Parabolica
38:10traction will gain
38:12new lap time
38:12because it means
38:13you can carry speed
38:14onto the next straight
38:14and confirmation bias
38:16for me maybe
38:17but that seems to
38:18be working for MP
38:19last year
38:20and may well
38:21allow them to be
38:22strong again this year
38:23and so far
38:24Tappanen fastest in practice
38:25and Tappanen coming
38:27through pit lane
38:27I imagine trying to
38:29get behind a car
38:30was that
38:30and has now
38:32found himself
38:33with people
38:33following him
38:34through pit lane
38:34I mean
38:35they tend to do
38:37two
38:38maybe three
38:39warm up laps
38:40on these Pirelli
38:41soft tyres
38:41and qualifying
38:42to get them into
38:43the right temperature
38:44to absolutely hit it
38:45Tappanen was at the
38:46front of the group
38:47and was hoping
38:49that if he went
38:49through the pits
38:50everyone else
38:51would continue on
38:51at racing speed
38:52past the start
38:53finish line
38:54and past him
38:55and put himself
38:55on a nice toe
38:56but everyone's
38:57followed himself
38:57through the pits
38:58so we are basically
38:59status quo
39:00yeah
39:01we saw this in the
39:02feature race didn't we
39:02Tappanen came
39:03into pit lane
39:04to fix some damage
39:05to his car
39:06and everyone
39:07followed him through
39:07yeah that was funny
39:09wasn't it
39:10it was a bit
39:10of a strange one
39:11Alessandro GST
39:12he's a driver
39:13that needs a good
39:13result this weekend
39:14he's not had the
39:15second season
39:16in the championship
39:17that he would have
39:17hoped for at all
39:18he was one of the
39:19highest place drivers
39:20coming into this year
39:22last year
39:22a driver that
39:23had some strong results
39:24he was so consistent
39:25at times
39:26but was 10th
39:27in the championship
39:28last year
39:28actually all the way
39:30down in 20th
39:31this season
39:32with only 4 point
39:33scores throughout
39:34the season so far
39:35so he really wants
39:36to finish the season
39:36strong if he's going
39:37to have any chance
39:38of giving himself
39:39a strong end
39:39to the year
39:40here we go
39:41this is going to be
39:42our qualifying run
39:43then we give us
39:43an idea
39:44as to who is where
39:45we've been running
39:46on carry over
39:47hard tyres
39:47soft tyres
39:48going on for the
39:49drivers now
39:49and this is their
39:50chance to go out
39:51and settle up
39:51before we go
39:53qualifying later
39:54the penultimate round
39:55of the season
39:55we've had a
39:56summer break
39:57they have had
39:58two days
39:58at Madrid
39:59to get themselves
40:01back up to speed
40:02without a completely
40:03different challenge
40:04to what we are
40:05going to see here
40:06as Tapanen
40:06leads us over
40:07the line
40:07yeah let's have
40:08a watch on board
40:09or let's watch
40:10with at least
40:11Tuca Tapanen
40:12as we absolutely
40:13go for it
40:13in this session
40:14times quick so far
40:15already
40:15a 38-4 would have
40:17been enough
40:17for fastest
40:18in the first
40:19qualifying session
40:19last year
40:2038-6 was fast
40:21in Q1
40:22and then a 38-1
40:23I believe
40:24as fast as in
40:24Q2 last year
40:26and there's been
40:26on the hard tyres
40:27so Tapanen
40:27pushing on there
40:28that's through
40:29the first chicane
40:30in Retafilo
40:30where braking late
40:31and then traction
40:32out of turn two
40:33are the things
40:34that are most important
40:35we go flat out
40:36through the long run
40:37towards the Roger
40:38chicane
40:39new curbs on the
40:40entry on the
40:41right hand side
40:41there so the drivers
40:42can use a little
40:43bit more road
40:44there we generally
40:45use the curbs
40:46in both apexes
40:47this looks pretty
40:48sedate actually
40:48so may well just
40:49be a build lap
40:50for Tapanen
40:50at the moment
40:51he's yellow
40:52in the first sector
40:53then we head
40:53into the middle
40:54the two right handers
40:55right of Lesmo 1
40:56which is slightly
40:56bounced tightening
40:57through the middle
40:58Lesmo 2
40:59a shorter apex
41:00dips at the apex
41:01and then comes back
41:02up on the exit
41:03so technical
41:03to get right
41:04then we go flat out
41:06once again
41:06through the little
41:07kink left
41:08the Seraglio corner
41:10I say corner
41:12kink in the straight
41:13underneath the old circuit
41:14and then potentially
41:15the trickiest section
41:16of the circuit
41:17Ascari
41:17medium high speed
41:19through there
41:19you've got to use
41:20the curbs
41:20let the car flow
41:21and get a good exit
41:22and Esther Rivera
41:24looking like he's
41:24going quickly
41:25in the Campos
41:26further behind
41:26Tapanen
41:27making his way
41:28past in traffic
41:28I think Tapanen
41:29potentially will be
41:30going for it
41:30this lap
41:31yeah
41:31you can just see him
41:32just getting out
41:34of the DRS early
41:36but Ernesto Rivera
41:37certainly is pushing
41:38on and getting a
41:39little bit of a
41:40toe from Williams
41:40Junior
41:41just further up
41:43the road
41:43around the final
41:44corner now
41:45and down the
41:46start finish
41:46straight he goes
41:47let's see where
41:48this puts Ernesto
41:49Rivera
41:49fourth place in the
41:50championship
41:51fourth in the
41:52session
41:52now goes quickest
41:53overall
41:53137.9
41:55leading
41:56a Campos
41:571-2
41:57but Niall
41:58half a second
41:59back
42:00as Pedro
42:00Claro
42:01now goes
42:01second place
42:02yeah
42:02someone's locked
42:02up slightly
42:03into turn one
42:04as does Ernesto
42:04Rivera
42:05but very quick
42:06times
42:06we didn't see a
42:0737 in qualifying
42:08ahead at all
42:09last season
42:10the lap record
42:11around here
42:11is a 37-5
42:13set by
42:13by Smolyar
42:14in 2022
42:15so potentially
42:16we may see
42:17some records
42:17broken this
42:18weekend
42:18circuit
42:19clearly
42:20has sped up
42:20decent amount
42:21of grip
42:21and with this
42:22cool air
42:23conditions this
42:23morning at 25
42:25degrees air
42:26temperature
42:26there's a big
42:27lock up from
42:27Taito Kato
42:28means he runs
42:29off the road
42:30to Ascari
42:30and won't be able
42:32to set a
42:32competitive time
42:33due to that
42:34yeah
42:35Taito Kato
42:36is getting away
42:38with that one
42:38and Nugo
42:39Gachiku
42:39filing his way
42:40through the
42:40traffic as he
42:41continues on
42:42down to the
42:42final corner
42:43everyone pretty
42:44much up
42:45bar a few
42:46drivers on
42:47this lap
42:48Tapanen
42:48the fastest
42:49of all of
42:50them
42:50through the
42:51first sector
42:52let's watch
42:52Gachiku
42:53round the
42:53final corner
42:54now down
42:55towards the
42:56start finish
42:56line which
42:57comes up
42:57pretty early
42:58on the
42:59start finish
43:00straight
43:00and up to
43:0113th place
43:02for Gachiku
43:03will we see
43:03him go for
43:04another one
43:04Freddie Slater
43:05our championship
43:06leader up to
43:07P4 as Tapanen
43:08heads to the
43:09final corner
43:09yeah Tapanen
43:10looking quick on
43:10this one and
43:11his teammate
43:11is Giusti as
43:12well so MP
43:13continuing that
43:14form from
43:14qualifying last
43:15year with good
43:16one lap pace
43:16here at
43:17Monza
43:18Gachiku
43:18quite a way
43:19off his
43:19teammate
43:20actually 8
43:20tenths
43:21so I don't
43:21know if he
43:21made a mistake
43:22or was held
43:22up on that
43:23lap we
43:23haven't seen
43:24Gachiku
43:25have been
43:25gapped by
43:25that much
43:26a 37
43:26six only a
43:27tenth away
43:28from the
43:29lap record
43:29now 37
43:30four that
43:30is the
43:30fastest lap
43:31we've seen
43:32that's a
43:32well it's
43:33actually I
43:34don't know
43:34about practice
43:34but it's the
43:35faster than
43:35the lap
43:36record so we're
43:36getting quicker
43:37and quicker
43:38is another year
43:39of experience in
43:39this car for
43:40the teams as
43:40well allowing
43:41them to go
43:41quickly as we
43:42jump on board
43:42with championship
43:43leader and
43:44rookie Freddie
43:47takes the
43:47apex lovely
43:48through there
43:49driver ahead
43:50makes a mistake
43:50and blocks
43:51Freddie into
43:52Lesmo too
43:52yeah one of
43:53the is that
43:54one of the
43:54high techs I
43:55think up ahead
43:56was it a
43:57Campos car
43:57it is
43:58it's Ugo
43:59Gachiku
44:00so going by
44:00his championship
44:01rival there we
44:01go he'll
44:02enjoy seeing
44:03that one
44:03yeah Ugo
44:04Gachiku
44:04with a mistake
44:05there but
44:05then quite
44:07deliberately I'd
44:08say not
44:09getting out of
44:10the way
44:10I don't think
44:11it was technically
44:12blocking because
44:13he was on a
44:14fast lap but
44:15Ugo Gachiku
44:16not helping his
44:17championship rival
44:17because it's all
44:18these little minor
44:19psychological battles
44:20that go on through
44:21a race weekend and
44:22through a championship
44:23that all they're
44:24trying to mentally
44:26undestabilize the
44:26other drivers
44:27Ugo Gachiku
44:27deliberately wouldn't
44:28have got out of
44:28the way there and
44:29also wouldn't have
44:30minded that he won't
44:31allow Slater to
44:32have a quick lap
44:33because if you can
44:34go quickly in
44:35practice it gives
44:36you a good
44:36opportunity in terms
44:37of confidence to
44:38go into the race
44:38there
44:40it looked like he
44:41was just looking
44:41behind there just
44:42to have a look at
44:44what was going on
44:45and now he's going
44:46to get the tow
44:46from Freddy
44:47so there you go
44:48going on to his
44:49last lap
44:49let's talk about
44:50some of the others
44:51Kanato Lee
44:52going along quickly
44:53on this lap
44:54Yevon David
44:54for AIX up in
44:55P5
44:56was quick at the
44:57madring
44:57looking quick
44:58once again
44:59in this session
45:01P5
45:02overall so far
45:04for Yevon David
45:05and let's not
45:05forget AIX
45:06took pole here
45:07last year
45:07with Brad
45:09Benavides
45:09as well
45:10so AIX
45:10can pull out
45:11a lap here
45:13Kanato Lee
45:13doing very well
45:14to get up
45:14into fourth place
45:15the cheque of flag
45:15is out
45:16so they're finishing
45:16in their lap
45:17and a lot of
45:18drivers doing
45:18two or three
45:19flying laps
45:20of these soft
45:20tyres
45:20confirming that
45:21the tyres can
45:22last at full
45:24pace
45:24a bit quicker
45:25or a bit longer
45:27than maybe we see
45:27at some other
45:28circuits due to
45:28the amount of
45:29straight lines
45:30running we have
45:31here at the
45:32Monza
45:33not so much
45:33load on the tyres
45:35as some of the
45:35other circuits
45:36we visit
45:37Evan David
45:37strong again
45:38at the end
45:39of the session
45:39only half second
45:39away
45:40and look at Chukwu
45:41we heard
45:41there was a car
45:43off at the first
45:43corner
45:43didn't we
45:44yeah and that
45:44looks like
45:44there's been
45:45fairly heavy
45:46contact actually
45:46because that
45:47tyre is off
45:48and also
45:48looks like
45:49it's a bit
45:49of a strange
45:50angle as well
45:52who is he near
45:53on the circuit
45:54again Chris
45:55well he's
45:56found
45:57well he maybe
45:58found another
45:58trident
45:58because that's
45:59Matteo Di Paolo
46:01well let's find
46:02out what happened
46:03shall we
46:03you can see
46:05it kind of
46:06tells its own
46:06story but
46:07here's exactly
46:08how it all
46:08played out
46:09this is on
46:09board with
46:09Noah Stromstead
46:10then
46:11okay so
46:11Stromstead
46:12then we've
46:12got a high
46:12tech of the
46:1323 ahead of
46:14us is
46:15Wu Hyun Shin
46:15and then oh
46:16my goodness
46:16wow
46:17that was
46:18that was a
46:19very heavy
46:19defence
46:21wasn't it
46:21I would say
46:22unnecessarily
46:23heavy for
46:23practice really
46:25oh yeah that's
46:26not good
46:26that really isn't
46:27good if I'm
46:28honest
46:28not what you
46:29want to see
46:29in practice
46:30to be honest
46:30is drivers
46:31weaving each
46:32other especially
46:32at that part
46:33of the circuit
46:33one of the
46:34fastest places
46:35on the Formula
46:363 calendar
46:37we're nudging
46:37300 kilometres
46:39an hour there
46:39175 miles an
46:41hour at that
46:42point and when
46:42you make contact
46:43at that speed
46:43never good
46:44not an ideal end
46:46to the session
46:46but clearly
46:47Ugachuku not
46:48wanting a
46:49Trident car to
46:50pass him on his
46:51final attempt at
46:52a fast life in
46:53practice and you
46:53can see Campos
46:54just a little
46:55wry smile there
46:56I wonder if that
46:56was to do with
46:57that incident or
46:58not
46:58well
47:00Trident
47:01understandably
47:01didn't look very
47:02impressed with that
47:03at all
47:03and that has been
47:05noted and I
47:06wouldn't be surprised
47:07if we see more
47:07come from that
47:08because that was
47:10pushing a driver
47:11all the way to
47:12the pit wall
47:13which is not what
47:15you want to see
47:15at all
47:16and from a driver
47:17fighting for the
47:18championship
47:19quite unnecessary
47:20as well
47:21Ugo getting out
47:22the car now
47:23and walking away
47:23from it
47:25and
47:26Bryce smile from
47:27Ugo as well
47:28so clearly not
47:30affecting him too
47:30much
47:31but yeah
47:31as you say Chris
47:32bit of a strange
47:33ends to our
47:34practice session
47:34because it is only
47:35a practice session
47:36no points
47:36or qualifying
47:38positions
47:38let's have a look
47:39on board
47:40Ugo Ugachuku
47:40so he's got a
47:41nice distant tow
47:42but cars were
47:43queuing up behind
47:43him
47:44looks in the mirror
47:45to the right
47:45inside
47:45a jinx late
47:46there
47:47and then goes
47:47all the way
47:48and then there
47:48was the contact
47:49that could have
47:49gone really badly
47:50there Chris
47:51Ugachuku's got no
47:52rear tyre on the
47:53rim at this point
47:53so it does well
47:54actually to keep
47:54the car in a
47:55straight line
47:55but
47:57yeah it's a late
47:58move from Ugochuku
47:59as you said Chris
48:00oh and he actually
48:01did hit the wall
48:02I think you're
48:02absolutely right
48:03I think it's
48:03you said it
48:04you know
48:04this stage
48:05pressure of the
48:05championship
48:06I think he just
48:06really wanted to
48:07get that good lap
48:08in to put himself
48:08in a good position
48:09for qualifying
48:10in terms of a mental
48:12state
48:12having done that lap
48:13but De Palo
48:14will be unhappy
48:14with that as well
48:15because you know
48:15he's been
48:16we've mentioned it
48:17earlier on
48:17he's looking just
48:18for a clean weekend
48:19and unfortunately
48:20contact at the
48:21fastest part of the
48:21circuit ends his
48:22practice session early
48:23damage is minimal
48:24so both drivers
48:25will be out for
48:26qualifying later
48:26barring anything
48:28unforeseen
48:28the teams will get
48:30to work and they'll
48:30be able to fix
48:31those fairly easily
48:32but not exactly
48:34an ideal end to
48:34practice for either
48:35of those drivers
48:36or teams
48:36because don't forget
48:37those teams are the
48:38two doing battle
48:39for the team's
48:40title as well
48:40it could have been
48:41a lot worse that
48:42could see we have
48:43two drivers jumping
48:43out the car
48:44okay Freddy Slater
48:4614th place
48:47in the session
48:48there so didn't
48:49quite get a lap
48:50in either
48:51it was a very good
48:52session for MP
48:53one two three
48:54at the top
48:55Gerard G
48:56fourth place
48:57Rivera in fifth
48:59so MP
48:59what a session
49:01for them
49:02they might have
49:03some different
49:03liveries but they're
49:04all from the same
49:05team
49:05Matiakul Nagy
49:06he's finished
49:06fourth place
49:07in the last four
49:08races
49:09Matiakul Nagy
49:10to come flying
49:11up the standings
49:11Tuka Tapanen
49:12waiting for his
49:14first win
49:15in this championship
49:16but did take pole
49:17last time out
49:18and that's a very
49:19good result for
49:20Alessandro Giusti
49:22as well
49:22someone who will
49:23be looking to end
49:24this season on a
49:25high down in 20th
49:26in the standings
49:27but someone who has
49:28a proven pedigree
49:30on his route
49:31to Formula 3
49:32and there we see
49:33the stationary
49:34Italian driver
49:36trident
49:38of
49:38Matteo Di Paolo
49:39part of the
49:40McLaren driver
49:41development program
49:43didn't get a chance
49:44to get his lap
49:45in at the end
49:45but what do you
49:46make of Slater
49:46there
49:4714th place
49:48will be a little
49:49bit disappointed
49:50with that one
49:51Alex Powell
49:52going to give a
49:52shout out to him
49:53P60
49:54on the flip side
49:55on his first
49:55session
49:56absolutely
49:56right up with
49:57Slater and Niall
49:58who are 14th and
49:5915th respectively
50:00don't think you'll
50:01read too much
50:02into that
50:02at the moment
50:03because we know
50:04that Slater's
50:05quick round here
50:06we know that
50:06Trident and
50:06quick round here
50:07it's all about
50:07getting the lap in
50:08but with the
50:10qualifying sessions
50:11you need to make
50:12sure you're in the
50:12right place
50:13and you nail the
50:13lap when it
50:14counts
50:14so it's all
50:15about that one
50:16lap at the end
50:17of qualifying
50:17yeah and there
50:18were some
50:18trial limit penalties
50:19coming in as well
50:21something as you
50:21mentioned earlier
50:22is that Roger
50:23you've got to be
50:24careful of
50:25but there we go
50:27a bit of an
50:27eventful end
50:28to practice
50:29and MP Motorsport
50:31taking full advantage
50:321, 2 and 3
50:33in the session
50:354 tenths the gap
50:36but I think
50:37that's somewhat
50:38due to how good
50:40of a tow you can
50:41get in this
50:42session
50:42and that proves
50:43that we shouldn't
50:43have 7.5 tenths
50:45between the top 10
50:45so you can see
50:47why drivers hunt
50:47for the tow so
50:48badly
50:49G, Rivera, David, Lee
50:51Stromstead, Lecorte
50:52and Delpino
