00:59Solov making some great moves to get himself into what would be

01:06We would have that alternative strategy for Villa-Gomez,
01:09which would work his way through to a podium.
01:12But history would be made out front with Nikola Solov becoming the first driver
01:16to take three consecutive race wins in Formula 2.
01:21He is now just one away for joining the record set by Charles Leclerc and George Russell
01:27of seven wins in a single season.
01:30And that has given him an extended lead in the championship.
01:33He'll be looking to do more of that this weekend,
01:36and we go from one historic circuit to another.
01:39This is one of the biggest challenges for the drivers this season.
01:43One more DRS zone this year coming up towards the bus stop chicane.
01:48So plenty of opportunity for overtaking.
01:51And we also have a compound change.
01:53We will have the super soft and the medium tyre instead of the soft and medium tyre.
01:59Practice kicks us off 45 minutes ahead.
02:03And in the commentary box as ever, myself, Chris McCarthy,
02:06and alongside me is Alex Brundle.
02:08Checking out the championship standings then after a hat-trick of wins, Chris,
02:12for Nikola Solov.
02:13What a phase of the season.
02:16He is having only one win away from the single season record.
02:21That held by George Russell and Charles Leclerc of seven wins
02:25throughout a single season in Formula 2.
02:28Welcome, everybody, to Spa-Francorchamps,
02:31the longest venue of the Formula 2 calendar.
02:35And what a challenge for these young drivers, Chris.
02:39It really is.
02:41Just the virtual safety car ending for the drivers.
02:44As you said, it is such a huge challenge for them.
02:47A circuit they all know very well.
02:50It's one that appears on plenty of calendars in Formula 4,
02:54Formula Regional categories, and, of course, in Formula 3.
02:57And it was this man here, Alex Dunn,
02:58who took pole position last season.
03:00He'll be desperate to get that first win of the season this weekend.
03:04As you mentioned, a compound change for this weekend.
03:07They will be qualifying on the Supersoft tyre.
03:10It was the soft last year.
03:12And it was Isaac Hajar, actually 2024, of course,
03:17because we had so many wet conditions.
03:20Isaac Hajar, who, in the last full dry race here,
03:23jumped from the soft to the medium tyre on lap 9.
03:28So the Supersoft is really going to be a disposable early race tyre
03:33for those drivers who start on it.
03:36Or, indeed, we may see the reverse strategy,
03:40as we have over the last couple of races, really, in Formula 2.
03:43Lead to a driver in the shape of Olly Gertha early on in the season.
03:47And then Rafael Villa-Gomez, last time out at Silverstone,
03:50be very beneficial at the end of the race.
03:53And that's what we often see here in Spa.
03:57But before all of that, they've got 45 minutes of practice
04:00to get their eye in, and critically, Chris,
04:02their ride height sorted around this most aerodynamic of venues.
04:07Tell us the amount of changes that may go into something like that,
04:12and why that is so crucial around this circuit.
04:15Well, it is a venue which requires immense efficiency from the cars.
04:21You need to go through high-speed corners incredibly fast,
04:24and you also need the top speed.
04:27So, effectively, you're asking the car to do both,
04:30have downforce and relinquish drag.
04:33Of course, there's a limit to which that is possible.
04:35That limit's known as physics.
04:37But they have to maximise that.
04:39Getting the cars sorted out to try to deliver it
04:42is a huge challenge for the teams.
04:45Add in the base of the Eau Rouge and Radeon Sweep,
04:48which is the biggest compression,
04:50the biggest load case of the year for a Formula 2 car,
04:54where cars are compressed towards the road,
04:56limiting how low you can actually run them
04:59to make a benefit of the ground effect,
05:02downforce elements of a Formula 2 car.
05:05So, all of that to consider for the teams,
05:07and that's what they're going to be doing
05:08through this free practice session.
05:09Yeah, it's a huge challenge, both on and off the circuit, isn't it?
05:13We can see Rafa Kammerer there,
05:15just ahead of Lorenz van Hoopen.
05:18Now, 47 points back from Nikola Solov,
05:22and that helps by the fact he has taken that hat-trick of wins,
05:26the first driver ever in Formula 2 history
05:29to take three consecutive wins.
05:31Let's see what the Bulgarian had to say
05:33about that coming into the weekend.
05:37It was great.
05:39Obviously, it's not something we expected coming into the year,
05:42but we're just improving every weekend,
05:45focusing on the things we need to.
05:47And the way I said it in Silverstone
05:50about everyone having his own strengths
05:52and stealing some strengths from other drivers, etc.,
05:56I think I've been able to do that well this year
05:58and kind of extract in all aspects what we need.
06:04Obviously, the only thing we're missing right now is qualifying,
06:07so that's the only thing I'm looking forward to, actually.
06:12It's a fantastic achievement, isn't it, Alex?
06:16The fact that he has taken those three consecutive wins,
06:19and he's the fourth driver to take a clean sweep
06:22along with Felipe Drogovic in Barcelona 2022,
06:26Oli Behrman at Baku in 23,
06:28Zayn Maloney Bahrain 24.
06:30It's a weekend like that
06:33that can almost put pen to paper on an F1 contract, isn't it?
06:36That's what F1 teams will be incredibly impressed with
06:40that can really help you get to the next level.
06:42Well, and Adrian Campos has come out and said exactly that,
06:46his team boss at Campos Racing.
06:48He said Nikola Solov deserves a chance in Formula 1.
06:53As well in mind, it's always beneficial
06:55for these Formula 2 teams to move a driver through
06:58into the top tier of motorsport,
07:01but they don't get to say that every day,
07:05these Formula 2 team bosses.
07:06You know, they're there year in, year out,
07:09watching champions or not,
07:11making their way through the team.
07:12There are only certain amount of matches
07:14they get to burn by pointing at a driver and going,
07:16I think that one's good enough.
07:18You know what I mean?
07:18And so when Adrian Campos says so,
07:22that comes with a certain weight.
07:24And you look back at some of the drivers he's worked with,
07:27he's worked with very good drivers,
07:29Isaac Hadjar, being one of them,
07:31who came through as a Red Bull junior
07:33and had really good campaigns with the Campos team.
07:36Rafa Kamara, we saw him there, 47 points back.
07:39This will be a weekend for him
07:41and the likes of Alex Dunn as well.
07:43Noel Leon, who we're looking at,
07:45likewise, 72 points back in the championship now,
07:48almost 50 back for Kamara and Dunn.
07:50That hat-trick of wins has just given Solov
07:52a bit of an extended lead in the championship,
07:55and they'll need to come out and respond now
07:57if they want to fight for this title.
07:58Yeah, especially when you look at Kamara.
08:00I mean, they're not bad results, are they?
08:02Fourth in Austria, fifth in Silverstone.
08:06But what do you think?
08:07He started from pole in that race.
08:09He would have liked it.
08:10You know, a championship challenge
08:11may well have seen him convert that into a victory.
08:14It's the late on in the stint pace of Nikola Solov
08:18and the neat and tidy race craft,
08:21which is really getting it done,
08:23especially in those feature races, of course,
08:25when the big points are to be picked up.
08:27There was feature race victory for him in Monaco,
08:29feature race victory in Albert Park as well.
08:33And he just appears to be a master
08:35of understanding the tire that he's on
08:38pretty much immediately into the stint
08:40and then working with it through to the end,
08:42making his way past in the interim neatly and tidily
08:47all the drivers that he needs to,
08:49including seeing off the charges on the reverse strategy.
08:53And the team are very good at letting him know
08:56how that's playing out as well.
08:58Do you think we'll see differences now
09:00with the fact that we have a compound jump?
09:02It's going to be a brand new challenge
09:03for the teams around here.
09:05It really is.
09:06It's going to be really tricky for them.
09:08Are we going to take a lap of Spa-Francorchamps?
09:13No, back to the exterior shot
09:17as the camera makes its way into the first corner
09:21and then heading down to the famous sweep.
09:26They're still building up tire temperature,
09:28I think, to a degree,
09:29although that looks like the first effort.
09:32You can see the car ground out
09:33through the mid-corner of Eau Rouge.
09:35It is one of the heaviest fuel loads of the year
09:39because of the full throttle percentage here, Chris,
09:41which is why you see cars hit the floor
09:43so aggressively early on in the races.
09:46Yeah, and such a huge challenge for the drivers
09:49just coming up through Lecombe.
09:51Back on now is Rafa Camera
09:54and heading down towards Brussels.
09:56So many elevation changes, isn't there,
09:58around this circuit.
10:00Yeah, huge elevation change.
10:02I mean, Eau Rouge Radeon itself is 41 metres.
10:05That's 12 storeys of elevation change,
10:09and that's within four seconds of performance
10:14around the racetrack.
10:16And what goes up must come down.
10:18That's what Rafa Camera's doing now
10:19through the mid-corner of Tourton
10:21down towards the chicane
10:23over which there is so much debate over the name.
10:27Some call it Fanny, some call it Piff Paff,
10:29some call it Campus.
10:31But I know it as the two corners
10:34where you need to maintain the minimum speed
10:36before you make your way into Stavlo,
10:38about which there is no debate over the name
10:40because it's the corner closest to the town of Stavlo.
10:43It used to be much closer as well
10:45on the original layout.
10:46In fact, that corner was in Stavlo
10:48when Spa used to be the fastest road circuit,
10:52at least in Europe, if not the world,
10:55before the layout change in 1979.
10:59Shall I bore you with some history,
11:00or shall we look at the final couple of corners
11:02for Rafa Camera,
11:03who looks very much at home quite early on,
11:05doesn't he, on this set of medium compact tiles?
11:07He really does.
11:08Purple second sector
11:09and across the line he goes
11:11to set the benchmark time
11:12for this current practice session.
11:15Two-minute flats there, 0.57 at the end
11:18and Van Hoeven in second.
11:20Kushmine going up to third,
11:21who's been really starting to gain
11:23some momentum in this championship.
11:25Now we look at Ferrari junior, Dino Beganovic.
11:28Dino Beganovic making his way through.
11:30Track looks in relatively good condition.
11:32Easily flat already through Blanchement.
11:35Worth saying, Chris,
11:36there is an extra DRS zone this year
11:38from the exit of Blanchement
11:39down to the final chicane.
11:41That's where Dino Beganovic
11:42has just made his way through.
11:43He's going to find his way
11:44to the top of the times,
11:46a two-minute 0.03.
11:49To give you a feel,
11:50the pole position in 2025
11:54was a 57.1.
11:57So that's where we are.
11:58That's how far we are away
12:00from the ultimate pace.
12:01At the moment, of course,
12:02we're at least a compound away as well.
12:05Colton Herta makes his way
12:07around Spa-Francorchamps.
12:09What an experience
12:10to be out here for him
12:11in this most iconic of circuits.
12:14Yeah, it's been 10 years for him
12:16since he raced around this circuit
12:19in a single-seater.
12:20So a long time for Colton Herta.
12:23It's going to feel like
12:24doing it all over again, isn't it?
12:25It will feel like
12:26this is a practice session
12:28where he has to get back up
12:29to speed with the circuit
12:30and learn it in a Formula 2 car.
12:32And that's been one of the challenges
12:33for him throughout the season.
12:35It's coming to circuits
12:37either he's never been to before
12:39or he hasn't been to
12:40in around 10 years.
12:41For a very long time, absolutely.
12:43You saw him climbing
12:44all over the outside curb there.
12:47And that time was deleted for Herta.
12:49It was a 2.02.5.
12:51So still a way away
12:52from what he would be aiming
12:53to achieve eventually.
12:55But an indication
12:56of one of the track limits
12:57challenges around here.
12:59One of them's at the top of Orooche.
13:02As Oli Goethe makes his way
13:03through the base
13:04and we've got a curb cam.
13:06How long will curb cam survive?
13:08We are taking bets.
13:10But the base of Orooche,
13:11Oli Goethe,
13:12one of the first victims
13:14having to climb over
13:15the top of Radeon.
13:18And anybody who thinks
13:19that the Radeon sweep
13:21is a simple drive-through now
13:24in a single-seater racing car,
13:26I invite you to fill
13:27your Formula 2 car with fuel
13:28and try to climb the famous hill.
13:31How much different is it
13:32doing it when you've got
13:35lots of fuel in a car
13:36at the start of the race
13:37compared to not,
13:37as we see Montoya,
13:38just climbing a little bit
13:40too much curb there?
13:41Yeah, it's the curb
13:42on the exit of Malmody,
13:44which is just tall enough
13:45to get under the floor
13:47of the car.
13:48Two things change.
13:49Firstly, you've got
13:49less direction change
13:50because you've got more weight
13:52in the rear of the car,
13:54not so efficiently carried.
13:55The second point is
13:56it hits the floor hard
13:57in the base.
13:59So just when you want
14:00to try and turn the car,
14:02you lose a little bit
14:03of that critical tyre contact
14:05from the car hitting the deck
14:08as it makes its way up there.
14:10Obviously, you don't want
14:11to try and give up too much
14:12because as the fuel burns off
14:14and the car lifts off the ground,
14:16you don't want to give up
14:17too much ride height
14:18later on in the race.
14:20So, so often the limit
14:22of your performance
14:23around Spa
14:24is how much the car
14:25hits the floor
14:26in the base of Eau Rouge
14:29and they have to make changes
14:30to the setup just for that.
14:33Lots of challenges
14:34around for the drivers
14:37on what is the longest circuit,
14:38but on the longest circuit,
14:39Alex, we've got
14:40just 400 so far
14:42at the start of practice
14:43between the top four
14:44and that, I think,
14:45gives us an indication
14:47that this could be
14:47a very close weekend.
14:49John Bennett's
14:49also up there as well.
14:51Now a race winner
14:52in Formula 2
14:53at the Red Bull Ring
14:55and this is a circuit
14:56where he does have
14:57previous experience
14:58on racing
14:59in the GV3 Championship.
15:01So we'll be excited
15:02for this weekend.
15:04Likewise, Roman Belinsky
15:05as well has done
15:06a good few laps around here
15:08both in Formula Regional
15:09and in GV3 as well
15:11and currently leads the way
15:12as the Polish driver.
15:14Has been in the points
15:15very consistently,
15:16Roman Belinsky,
15:17over the course
15:18of the last three rounds
15:19as well.
15:20He's done, yeah, definitely.
15:22The last couple of feature races
15:24have been points scoring.
15:26It was took place
15:28in Barcelona
15:31and then on through
15:32into the points
15:33in the last couple of rounds.
15:34A lot of these drivers
15:36will have, I mean,
15:37it's fair to say
15:38most of these drivers
15:38would have done laps
15:39of sparring something.
15:40Even domestic series
15:41do all of the circuits
15:44of whatever country
15:45in which they're based
15:46and spa so often.
15:48So you'll see drivers
15:49come to visit this layout.
15:52So it is somewhere
15:53that they will have
15:55a decent amount of experience.
15:56Camera becomes one
15:57of the first drivers
15:58to break the two-minute mark.
16:00Mine follows him
16:01and they still continue
16:03to gain.
16:03You get a lot of track evolution
16:04as well
16:05because the circuit
16:06is so long.
16:07So imagine each one
16:09of the corners
16:10gaining a tiny bit of grip
16:12amounts to quite a lot
16:13of lap time
16:14as you make your way
16:15to the end of the track.
16:17Belinsky finds his way
16:18up to the top
16:19once more in the dams
16:21while we were following
16:22his teammate
16:23Dina Bogdanovich
16:23across the line.
16:25Yeah, some track limits
16:26coming in mostly
16:27through either the last corner
16:29or through Eau Rouge
16:30where cars are running wide
16:32at the top of Radion there.
16:33But we now look
16:35at our championship leader.
16:37Three wins in a row
16:39for Nikola Solov
16:40over the course
16:41of the last two rounds.
16:42And he's currently purple
16:44through the first sector.
16:45It looks like Kishmine
16:46was the latest victim
16:47to track limits.
16:48And that was once again
16:49Eau Rouge.
16:50But here we see Solov
16:52just towing up
16:53to the back
16:53of Nico Verona.
16:55And Nikola Solov
16:56quickest in the first sector.
16:58First sector here
16:58is basically La Source
17:00and then getting it right
17:02nice and tidy
17:03through the flat out run
17:05up to the top

17:07ends in the braking zone

17:10And then the middle sector
17:11very much dependent
17:12on the amount of downforce
17:14that you're running.
17:15More downforce
17:16will see you stronger
17:16in the middle sector
17:17at Spa.
17:18Less downforce
17:19will see you stronger
17:20in the first and final.
17:21And there was always
17:22that decision to be made
17:23between raceability
17:24of the car
17:25and how well you qualify.
17:28It's a balance
17:29between first and final
17:30and the middle one.
17:31So you will often see
17:33drivers massively quick
17:35in that first sector
17:37and then the lap
17:37doesn't come to fruition.
17:39Occasionally the lighter
17:40rear wing as well
17:41which comes with
17:42this specification
17:44of car
17:45makes an appearance
17:46at Spa-Francorchamps
17:47as Nikola Solov
17:48makes his way
17:49through the final
17:49couple of corners.
17:50Just going up
17:51to the back

17:59with so many

18:01and very fast

18:10it right firstly

18:24and on the marks
18:26otherwise you lose

18:35goes at it
18:35because your outlaps
18:36and inlaps
18:37are so long
18:38it's always a challenge
18:39to manage the
18:40qualifying session here
18:41to make sure you get
18:42the car in the right
18:43place at the right time
18:44because the length
18:45of the circuit
18:46at just over
18:47seven kilometres
18:48takes away
18:49all of your
18:50wiggle room
18:51in management
18:52of in and outlaps.
