00:00МУЗЫКАЛЬНАЯ ЗАСТАВКА
00:39Round five would take us to the home of British motorsport,
00:44Silverstone, and it would be a British driver on pole
00:47in Freddy Slater leaving the way.
00:50Lots of fierce battles for our Michael Shin found himself
00:53off the circuit coming through at Lovefield,
00:56and we had plenty of battles going on towards
00:58the start of the field as well.
01:01Many out there looking to get onto the podium.
01:04It was contact a little bit further back,
01:07which led to a last-lap safety car.
01:09Matteo Di Paolo would take the win on circuit,
01:12but would later be disqualified,
01:15and with some other penalties being awarded
01:18to the likes of Ernesto Rivera, James Wharton,
01:22and Teofil Niall, Mace Gwadish would finish third on track,
01:26but would take the overall race win with Freddy Slater in second,
01:30taking a few points out of championship leader Ugo Ugochiku.
01:34We'll cover all of those penalties in details in just a little while,
01:38but welcome, everyone, to round six of the season.
01:42We're in to the second half now.
01:44This doubleheader, a crucial part of the season
01:46in who will decide that championship fight to your left.
01:51Practice coming up first.
01:53My name's Chris McCarthy.
01:54Alongside me, as ever, Piers Pryor.
01:56Piers, we come to Spa next.
01:58What a challenge this is for the drivers.
02:00From one historic challenge in motorsport at Silverstone
02:03to another here in Belgium.
02:05Spa-Francorchamps, another one of the drivers' absolute favourites.
02:08So much history here.
02:10The circuit also lends itself so well to all single-seater racing,
02:14but FIA Formula 3 is a brilliant place to go racing.
02:18It really has high-speed challenge.
02:20It's got undulation over 100 metres between the highest and lowest point,
02:24which is a lot on any circuit,
02:27but especially when you've got steep gradients like Ugo Rouge and Radeon,
02:30some subtle camber changes throughout the circuit,
02:32and those long, long straights,
02:34and an additional DRS zone this year, Chris,
02:36down into the bus stop on the exit of Blanchemont as well.
02:39So three DRS zones into the bus stop at the last corner,
02:42down towards Turn 1, and then, of course, along the Camel Street.
02:45So plenty of overtaking we've seen in years,
02:47potentially even more to come,
02:49and I'm looking forward to another excellent weekend of Formula 3 racing.
02:52Shall we start by going through the penalties that we had last time?
02:56because we had Mateo Di Paolo win on the circuit,
03:02and what a performance he put in to hold off the challenges
03:04from the likes of his teammate, Freddy Slater, and so on.
03:08But he would lose that win after the race with a disqualification,
03:14and then we would have penalties for Ernesto Rivera, James Wharton,
03:19Alessandro Giusti as well for weaving behind the safety car.
03:22Why don't you cover off in a little bit more detail
03:24the main penalties from those races?
03:26Well, to start with our race winner Di Paolo,
03:29we spoke about it, we waxed lyrical after the race
03:31about his incredible drive,
03:32his bounce back after a strong start,
03:35sorry, a poor start to the season.
03:36He looked like a new driver.
03:38He looked rejuvenated, took the victory,
03:40and was rightly very happy about it.
03:43But unfortunately, technical infringement basically,
03:45after the race, his rear diffuser was measured to have been too low.
03:50That wasn't a mistake by the team.
03:52Basically, we saw three occasions on the final lap
03:54where Slater was right underneath the rear wing of Di Paolo.
03:57So teammate, teammate, front to rear contact
04:00almost certainly led to the damage on the diffuser,
04:04which meant it hung too low.
04:05But unfortunately, because the team,
04:07I mean, reading through the document after the event,
04:08the team, it's on the responsibility of the team,
04:11the drivers have proved that the infringement
04:13was wholly and solely due to something that happened on circuit.
04:16And unfortunately, not enough evidence was able to be produced
04:18that that contact was in the terms of the law of the FIA.
04:24However, ultimately, as much as it was,
04:26it was probably cause for that contact,
04:29which meant he was disqualified.
04:30So Di Paolo, he'll still take a lot of confidence from it.
04:33He did win the race on the road.
04:34I think his driving was worthy of a victory.
04:36He drove a brilliant defensive race, timed his defenses perfectly,
04:40but unfortunately doesn't get to keep the 25 points
04:43he would have had with it.
04:44We'll go to some of those other penalties a little bit
04:48in just a little while.
04:49But Ugo Ugachuku is our championship leader
04:53coming into this round.
04:54What a start to the season he has had.
04:56We spoke to him coming into the weekend
04:59about his feelings coming in to round six here at Spa.
05:08Yeah, feeling good.
05:09You know, I really enjoy racing here around Spa.
05:12It's a great circuit.
05:13And of course, you know, the confidence is still high.
05:15You know, Silverstone was overall a good point scoring weekend for me.
05:21You know, I had a few issues struggling with a few things in quali,
05:25but, you know, I'm confident that we can kind of go back
05:29to our usual quali form, you know,
05:31always being in the front two rows before that.
05:33So that'll be really important.
05:36Quali is not always the easiest around here
05:37because there's always the battles for slipstreams
05:40and stuff like that.
05:42So, you know, try to keep it clean,
05:44get a good track position,
05:45and, yeah, good quali would set up the weekend pretty nicely.
05:50Three podiums in a row now for the American driver
05:53leaves him in the championship lead
05:55by 18 points ahead of Freddy Slater,
05:5844 points ahead of his teammate,
06:00Teofil Nal.
06:01Now, Stromsted has climbed up to fourth in the championship,
06:0547 points back.
06:07But he's starting to threaten to break away here, Piers, isn't he?
06:11He's got Freddy Slater behind him.
06:13We can see the on-board view from Freddy Slater now.
06:16But the likes of Teofil Nal may be a little bit concerned
06:20that Ugo Ugachuku is starting to escape.
06:22And that's because of the consistency he is showing.
06:24Three podiums in a row.
06:26Yeah, and he was really strong last time out, wasn't he?
06:28He's one of the few drivers in recent times
06:30who have taken a podium twice in one event.
06:34It only happened three times last year.
06:36Sten, Sean, Tramnitz, and Mariboya did it last year.
06:40But Ugachuku is the only one to have done it this year.
06:42But, yeah, you're right, Chris.
06:43He's got a nice little buffer in the championship now
06:45as we look forward to the rest of the season.
06:48I don't know whether he'll be thinking about consolidation now
06:52because, ultimately, if he just consistently scores points,
06:54he's probably putting himself in a really good position.
06:56He doesn't need to go out and win races
06:58by the biggest margin in F3 sprint history like he did last time.
07:02But, of course, as we always say, Chris,
07:03it does help when you get a maximum point score.
07:06But, yeah, he's looking in great form.
07:07He was good here last year, second in the sprint race,
07:09which was the only race we had, unfortunately,
07:11due to the rain that countered that second race.
07:14So he'll be coming into this weekend, I think,
07:16with confidence about as high as it could possibly be.
07:19Well, 28 more points are available now coming into this weekend
07:23going forward throughout the season.
07:25There's been a slight change to the Formula 3 calendar in that.
07:29At Madrid, we will have an extra qualifying session
07:32where you can get two points for pole position.
07:35And then we will have an extra feature race as well,
07:39which you can get 26 points for a win and fastest lap as well.
07:44So they'll have a two-day in-season test at Madrid as well
07:48at the end of August.
07:50So a little bit of time for the drivers
07:52to get used to a brand-new circuit.
07:54And then how about that, Piers?
07:55There's going to be a lot of points available
07:57going in to that final round.
07:59Overall, 67 points will be available
08:02going into the season finale.
08:03Yeah, it's almost like 2014 in Formula 1
08:06when we had the double-point scoring Formula 1 season finale.
08:09But it's actually an extra race.
08:11So it's interesting because that extends
08:13the tail of the championship a bit longer
08:15than the drivers may be even expecting.
08:17So for the likes of Turfield Nyon,
08:20there was Stromstead, maybe even British Slater,
08:21they'll be thinking that's more opportunity
08:22to close the gap.
08:24Look at Chukwu, we're thinking, well,
08:25or might be thinking,
08:26oh, it's another race potentially
08:28where the gap can be closed.
08:31But ultimately, they'll go out there
08:32and try and do the best they can
08:34and score as many points as possible.
08:35And ultimately, if you've got good form,
08:37then it shouldn't make a huge amount of difference
08:39one way or the other.
08:41But interesting, isn't it,
08:41that we've got a new circuit with an in-season test.
08:44It doesn't often happen.
08:45So that'll be good for the drivers
08:46to get used to the maddering,
08:48which will be the finale
08:50and the double header finale, effectively,
08:52with those feature races.
08:53And a slightly different format
08:54for the drivers to get their head around as well,
08:56because normally we have
08:57a 30-minute qualifying session,
08:59don't we, Chris?
09:00But it'll be two 20-minute qualifying sessions.
09:03And a bit of a different energy
09:05going into the weekend,
09:07because the drivers,
09:07they have to be very consistent.
09:09It's not all about that one lap in qualifying.
09:11You have to, you know,
09:12almost make lightning strike twice,
09:14so to speak,
09:15and get that done,
09:17because that will be the last race of the season
09:19for that double qualifying session.
09:20Yeah, absolutely that.
09:22It's going to be a really good season finale.
09:25Both the drivers and the teams
09:27are very excited about this.
09:29And coming into the weekend,
09:30we spoke to the ART Grand Prix team principal,
09:34Sebastian Philippe,
09:35about this season finale,
09:37where we will now have two qualifying
09:39and two feature race.
09:41First, thanks to the promoter
09:44to give us the opportunity
09:45to keep the calendar
09:47after the cancellation of Bahrain.
09:50After, for sure,
09:51it will be a very challenging weekend,
09:52because there will be one more qualify
09:54and one more race.
09:55But if we remember well,
09:58during the COVID,
09:59we were also used to do three races in a weekend.
10:01So it's challenging,
10:03but I think it's not a so big change
10:05for the team.
10:07Yeah, Sebastian Philippe
10:08referring to the 2021 season there,
10:10where we had two sprint races
10:11and a feature race.
10:13This is slightly different
10:13in that we'll have two qualifying sessions,
10:16one to set the grid for the sprint race
10:18and the feature race on Saturday,
10:20and then one to set the grid
10:21for feature race two on Sunday.
10:24What do you make of the format, Piers,
10:25as a former driver yourself?
10:26More racing equals better, Chris,
10:28in my opinion.
10:29The more times we get CFIA Formula 3 cars
10:32do battle on circuit,
10:33I'm very much here for it.
10:35It'll be interesting as well
10:36because it gives the drivers
10:37a bit more of an opportunity
10:38to get their teeth into that circuit,
10:40the Madgering circuit.
10:41We've seen renders online of it.
10:42We've seen,
10:43as Carlos Sainz did a tour of it
10:46on the F1 YouTube channel,
10:47I think,
10:47and for F1 TV as well,
10:49in a road car with Lance Barreto.
10:51So we know roughly
10:52what it's going to be like,
10:53but the teams will be compiling
10:54already their simulators
10:56of what they think it will be like.
10:58The drivers won't get a real picture
10:59until they actually hit the track
11:01and that mid-season test,
11:02and they'll be frantically
11:03hitting the simulator hard after that
11:05to try and get themselves
11:06as close as possible
11:07in terms of driving
11:08and also the setup of the car
11:10into that new circuit.
11:12It'll almost certainly
11:13be fairly new tarmac,
11:14which means that often
11:15when we see brand new tarmac,
11:16it's a little bit slippery,
11:17very green to get started.
11:19We'll see a lot of track evolution,
11:20and then with that extra race,
11:22the teams will have to be
11:22on top of how the circuit evolves.
11:24The drivers will be working out
11:26where they can overtake,
11:28where they can exploit the track,
11:29where they can find some time
11:30over their rivals,
11:31and what it will be like
11:32at a race start as well,
11:33because that's another thing.
11:34These drivers,
11:35every single circuit,
11:36they'll watch back the starts
11:37of every other race
11:38from if you're in the front positions,
11:40middle positions,
11:41back positions,
11:41so that they can see
11:42how the lie of the circuit goes,
11:44how the flow of racing goes
11:46in the first lap
11:46with side-by-side racing,
11:47so they can put themselves
11:48in the best position.
11:50There will have been none of that
11:51ahead of the first race,
11:52but then they've got
11:53three races that weekend,
11:54so the sprint race
11:54will be the first opportunity
11:56to analyze,
11:57to look back at that,
11:58and then do the same
11:58for the feature race one
11:59and then feature race two as well,
12:01so a real challenge
12:02for the drivers.
12:03Ultimately,
12:03I don't think it will change
12:04the complexion of the season
12:06and the form,
12:07because the drivers and teams
12:09that do the best job
12:10will turn up at a new circuit
12:11and still likely be the drivers
12:12and the teams
12:12that will do the best job,
12:13which I'm looking at.
12:14The Campos and Trident,
12:16for example,
12:16are the two that have been
12:18at the front of the field
12:19the last couple of seasons,
12:21with Van Amersfoort
12:22creeping in a little bit this year,
12:24but yeah,
12:25it's going to be interesting,
12:26good challenge,
12:27nice to see a new circuit
12:29and something with the drivers.
12:30It's a bit of a clean slate
12:32because none of the teams
12:32will be able to turn up
12:33with a setup advantage
12:34over any other team.
12:35You can see the cars making their way
12:37down pit lane there
12:38and it was lovely scenes
12:41on the circuit yesterday.
12:43The F1, F2, F3 paddocks
12:45all gathered together
12:46to do the annual run
12:48up towards the Camel Straits
12:50where they paid their tributes
12:53to Antoine Hubert
12:54and Delano Vantov as well.
12:57Delano who we tragically lost
12:58in 2023
12:59during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend
13:01and Antoine Hubert,
13:03of course,
13:04the former Formula 2 race winner
13:06who we tragically lost
13:07in 2019
13:08and great to see
13:09that the paddocks
13:10all come together,
13:12Piers,
13:12to pay tribute
13:14to former teammates
13:16in some cases
13:17and former drivers
13:18who they raced against
13:19and it's always
13:21a really lovely start
13:22to the weekend
13:23here at the Belgian Grand Prix.
13:24Yeah, of course.
13:25These drivers,
13:27they are,
13:28and drivers and teams,
13:29everyone,
13:29it's a bit of a travelling circus
13:30is Formula 3,
13:32Formula 2,
13:32Formula 1
13:33going around the world,
13:34everyone pursuing
13:35their dreams of success.
13:37We know motorsport
13:38is dangerous
13:38and unfortunately
13:40a stark reminder of that
13:41but great to have
13:42the tribute for those drivers
13:43and it's a real reminder
13:44of, you know,
13:45the impact they had
13:46on others as well.
13:47Well, Freddie Slater,
13:49you can see him
13:49on screen now,
13:51took pole position
13:52at Silverstone,
13:5418 points behind
13:55Ugo Ugochukwu.
13:56Let's hear what he had to say
13:57about that Silverstone weekend.
14:01You look at Silverstone
14:02as a weekend
14:03was really positive for me.
14:04I think P1 in practice,
14:06P1 in qualifying,
14:06the pace was incredibly
14:07all weekend.
14:08Had a really well-managed
14:10sprint race,
14:10managed to make my way forward
14:12late in the race
14:12with good time management
14:14and then the feature race,
14:15there was just a few things
14:16that went wrong
14:16at the wrong time
14:18and, for example,
14:19when that safety car came out,
14:20we had a bit of an advantage
14:21at that point
14:21with the time management
14:23that I did
14:23and I think that was
14:24kind of our easy opportunity
14:25to overtake.
14:26Then we had the safety car.
14:27Obviously,
14:28some things happened
14:28on that last lap
14:29which were out of my control
14:31and put me in a situation
14:32that made me lose
14:35more positions
14:35than probably I needed to.
14:36So,
14:37we still ended
14:38the weekend
14:38with a P2 somehow
14:39with all the penalties
14:40which was a result.
14:42so now we look forward
14:43to Spar.
14:45Freddie Slater
14:45had a really tough battle
14:47with his teammate
14:48right there,
14:49Matteo Di Paolo.
14:49They side by side
14:50once again.
14:51It's almost like
14:51we orchestrate this, Chris.
14:53Just starting to practice it.
14:55But five podiums
14:57and five rounds
14:57for Freddie Slater.
14:58Here's Finn McLaughlin,
14:59the only driver
15:00he'll be making his debut
15:01at the circuit
15:02this weekend.
15:03so this is going to be
15:04an incredibly crucial
15:05practice session for him.
15:07But going back
15:08to Freddie Pears,
15:09five podiums
15:10in five rounds.
15:11He's shown great consistency
15:12but he really will
15:14want to get that first win now.
15:16Surely.
15:16Surely it's only
15:17a matter of time now.
15:18We said it at Silverstone
15:19he was on pole
15:20he was on pole
15:22here last year
15:23for the sprint race
15:23in one of his two
15:24guest events
15:25that he did.
15:26He was of course
15:26guested at Bahrain
15:27for AIX
15:28and then was here
15:28last year
15:29in the high tech
15:31actually.
15:31He was on pole
15:32for the sprint race.
15:32Didn't manage to convert
15:33that then of course
15:34and still without a win
15:35in Formula 3
15:36but a driver
15:38that's second
15:39in the championship
15:39as you mentioned Chris
15:40went on the podium
15:40at least once
15:41every event this year.
15:44Surely you roll the dice
15:45enough times
15:46on the podium
15:46eventually you're going
15:47to come out with a
15:48I was about to say
15:49a six but a number one.
15:50But Slater
15:51he's coming into this weekend
15:52we just heard him there.
15:53He seems so sure
15:54doesn't he?
15:54He just very matter of fact
15:55said you know
15:56look last weekend
15:57should have converted it
15:58things happen
15:59but he's almost like
16:01compartmentalised it
16:01taken it
16:02logged it
16:02he's got such a
16:05what's the word
16:05settled and assured
16:07head on young shoulders
16:08let's not forget
16:09he's only 17 years old
16:11so
16:13he's still able
16:14to
16:15mentally deal
16:16with all the challenges
16:17of a season
16:18in Formula 3
16:19and all the ups and downs
16:20that come along with it
16:21and
16:21Trident
16:22historically very good
16:24here
16:24as well
16:25last year
16:25in that sprint race
16:26that we had
16:26Strongstead took a
16:27commanding victory
16:28actually ever took Slater
16:30who was in the high tech
16:31then
16:31and drove away
16:32and now
16:33Slater in that car
16:34that took victory
16:35one year ago
16:35unfortunately
16:36we didn't get to see
16:36what the form
16:38would have been
16:38in the feature races
16:40it was rained off
16:41but Brad Benavides
16:41in the AX
16:42is actually our driver
16:43that was Slater
16:44to start on pole position
16:44it's disappointing
16:45it's disappointing
16:45not to see Brad here
16:46this year
16:47because we spoke to him
16:48a pre-season Chris
16:49didn't we
16:49and he said that
16:49Spa is one of his
16:50favourite circuits
16:51he always goes well there
16:52and it's always
16:52sort of an upward
16:53inflection point
16:54in his season
16:55it seems like
16:55every time he gets to Spa
16:57his season
16:57has an uptick
16:59yeah
17:00it was AX
17:01he took pole with
17:02last season
17:04and
17:04what a weekend for them
17:05at Silverstone
17:06is
17:07Yevon Davis
17:08taking that
17:09historic podium
17:10for the
17:11Sri Lankan flag
17:12on an F1 podium
17:13for the first time
17:14with second place
17:15in the sprint race
17:16seventh in the feature race
17:18as well
17:18he'll be feeling confident
17:20coming into this weekend
17:21knowing that the AIX team
17:23have gone well round
17:25here in the bus
17:26absolutely
17:27it's a circuit
17:29which is a challenge
17:29for the engineers
17:30and teams
17:31because
17:32you've got
17:33I mean we're looking
17:33at it right now
17:34the absolutely monumental
17:35straight up
17:36through Kemmel
17:36which is flat out
17:37from exit La Source
17:38getting on towards
17:39two kilometres
17:39of flat out running
17:41in a straight line
17:42then you've got also
17:43that long flat out
17:43run that we're jumping
17:44on board with
17:44Terfel Nile
17:45from the exit of
17:46Stavolo
17:47all the way through
17:48flat out
17:48through Blanchemont
17:49towards the bus stop
17:49so a lot of straight line
17:51running
17:51so you run low downforce
17:52you can gain a lot of time
17:53in a straight line
17:54but in the middle sector
17:55as soon as you get to
17:56Le Coupe
17:56at the end of Kemmel
17:57Strait
17:57you're basically turning
17:59in the medium
17:59and high speed
18:00all the way through
18:01Le Coupe
18:02Bruxelles
18:03Jackie X
18:03Pou on campus
18:04Stavolo
18:04and Paul Freire
18:06where you need
18:07the downforce
18:07to be able to carry
18:08the speed to the corner
18:09so
18:10a bit of a game
18:11of
18:11do you go for the straight line
18:13or do you go for
18:14or do you go for
18:14a straight line speed
18:15or do you go for
18:16a corner griff
18:17as we jump off board
18:17with the driver
18:18that's had the most
18:18pulls this season
18:19Terfel Nile
18:19as we head down
18:21towards this long
18:22flat out run
18:23at Eau Rouge and Radion
18:24this is going to be
18:25completely flat out
18:26the first lap
18:26for Terfel Nile
18:27I'm certain
18:28he'll be completely
18:28pinned through here
18:29such as the downforce
18:30of these Formula 3 cars
18:31easily flat out
18:32we'll probably see
18:33some side by side
18:34running through there
18:35in the races
18:35and then he'll grab
18:36sixth gear any second
18:37now as we're now
18:38completely dead straight
18:39looking already
18:40ready for the breaking
18:41point of Le Coombe
18:43which will be with
18:43the main overtaking
18:44opportunity in the races
18:45DRS will be wide open
18:47down to third gear
18:48carry the speed
18:49to the middle there
18:49some drivers choose
18:50to use a little bit
18:52more curve
18:52on the left hand side
18:53there but Nile
18:53staying clear of them
18:54at the moment
18:55and then right
18:56we head now downhill
18:57this is aggressively
18:58downhill
18:59from the breaking point
19:00it continues to go down
19:01almost like a helter
19:02skelter
19:03down and down
19:03means the front
19:04washes away there
19:05sometimes you can get
19:06kick of oversteer
19:06then through the
19:07newly reprofiled
19:08in the last couple
19:09of years
19:09Jackie Ixcurve
19:10all the way up
19:11to the gravel
19:11on the exit
19:12we're still going
19:13downhill aggressively
19:14towards Pouin
19:15so you have to carry
19:16as much speed
19:16to the middle
19:17of the apex
19:17here drag the brakes
19:18so early on the
19:19power in this
19:20Campos car
19:20it always seems like
19:22it's got a good
19:22rotation at high speed
19:23at Campos
19:24and that'll be critical
19:25to save the front
19:26tyres which get
19:27worked so hard
19:27around here
19:28now into the
19:29Fania chicane
19:29hug the right hand
19:30curve for as long
19:31as you can
19:32then flick it left
19:32get on the power
19:33early all the way
19:34up to the gravel
19:35once again
19:35now a tricky
19:36and important
19:37corner at Stavolo
19:38because from this
19:39moment you are
19:40completely flat out
19:41through the kink
19:42at Pouin
19:43all the way up
19:44as we head towards
19:46Blanchiment
19:46and then the chicane
19:47that was sort of
19:48most of the middle
19:49sector and all those
19:50corners that were long
19:51and continue to go
19:52left and then right
19:53that's where the
19:53drivers need the
19:54aero balance and
19:55the aerodynamic grip
19:56from these cars
19:56but then when we're
19:57going flat out
19:58that then aerodynamic
19:59grip turns into drag
20:00so that's again
20:01what I was just
20:02mentioning about
20:02the trade-off
20:03these teams and
20:04drivers have to make
20:05and into the
20:06finish game
20:07lovely stuff
20:07for his trial
20:08we watch the
20:09number one car
20:10Teofil Nile
20:11crucial weekend
20:12for him
20:13this one
20:14isn't it
20:14he has had a
20:15little bit of
20:16misfortune at
20:17times
20:17had that penalty
20:19in the last race
20:20as well for gaining
20:21an advantage
20:22off the circuit
20:22which lost him
20:23a possible
20:23podium
20:25he really needs
20:26to be taking
20:27points out of
20:28Ugachuku this round
20:29now
20:29absolutely
20:30he needs to
20:31basically be the
20:31highest scoring
20:32campus driver
20:33every weekend
20:34going forward
20:35to give himself
20:35a realistic chance
20:36of the championship
20:37because his teammate
20:38they're on board
20:38with now
20:39Ugo Ugochuku
20:39is on a rich run
20:41of form
20:42and with that
20:43points advantage
20:44Ugochuku has over
20:45Slater and Nile
20:47you can't really
20:48afford a weekend
20:49Nile can't afford
20:50a weekend off now
20:51like he had
20:52at Silverstone
20:53and also qualifying
20:54wasn't great either
20:55was it at the
20:55previous event as well
20:56so if Ugochuku
20:58can just bag in results
20:59he's going to put himself
20:59in a good position
21:00we've touched on that
21:00already
21:01but you know
21:01he's going to be
21:03Teofil Nile
21:04is going to be
21:04under pressure
21:04to go out there
21:05and basically be
21:06the driver
21:06for the second half
21:07of the season
21:07but we kind of
21:08saw that a bit
21:09last year
21:09didn't we Chris
21:10Murray Boyer
21:11really came into
21:11his stride
21:12second half
21:13of last year
21:13at this stage
21:14the season
21:15was kind of
21:15an outside chance
21:16of the championship
21:17but then
21:17with some solid
21:18consistent results
21:19towards the end
21:20of the year
21:20genuinely put himself
21:21in an opportunity
21:22to challenge
21:23for that championship
21:23only ended up
21:24a few points
21:25clear of Nicolas
21:26Sol of his teammate
21:27in the end
21:27but you know
21:28we can see drivers
21:29hit a stride
21:31as they come
21:31into the second
21:32half of the season
21:33as they get
21:33everything dialed in
21:34they get a one
21:35with their engineer
21:35they find what
21:36they like on the car
21:37a few little tweaks
21:37a few little changes
21:38in their driving
21:39and maybe set up
21:40and they can
21:41really turn
21:41their season around
21:42yeah it all started
21:43yeah it all started
21:44with that win
21:44at Silverstone
21:45didn't it
21:45for Murray Boyer
21:46and then from there
21:48started to get
21:49some momentum
21:50behind him
21:51MP Motorsport
21:52as well
21:53another team
21:54who feel
21:54they will really
21:55want to start
21:56getting some
21:56good results
21:57behind them
21:58now
21:58it's been a bit
21:58of a difficult
22:00start to the season
22:01for the MP team
22:01so far
22:02yet to get
22:02their first podium
22:03let's have a look
22:04at Michael Shin
22:05running a little bit
22:06wide there
22:07coming out
22:08at the exit
22:09of the section
22:10of Lake
22:11on there
22:11just a few
22:12couple wheels
22:13on the gravel
22:15but MP
22:16this would be
22:17a really good
22:17weekend
22:18for them
22:18to start
22:19getting some
22:20good results
22:21of course
22:21paid tribute
22:22to Delano
22:24Vantov
22:24who raced
22:25with them
22:25in Formula
22:27Regional
22:28European Championship
22:29by Alpine
22:30had success
22:30in F4
22:31as well
22:32Tuka Tapanen
22:33will be disappointed
22:35with how things
22:35have gone so far
22:36many would have
22:37seen him
22:37as a real
22:38one to watch
22:39the Ferrari Junior
22:40but currently
22:40finds himself
22:4116th in the
22:42Championship
22:42however Piers
22:43this has been
22:44we have seen
22:46the likes of
22:47Maciej Guadish
22:48climb almost
22:4910 places
22:50in the Championship
22:51with that
22:51feature race win
22:52last time out
22:53so there is
22:54opportunity
22:54out of the
22:56top two positions
22:57in particular
22:58to make really
22:59big strides
23:00even if you're
23:00out the top 10
23:01in the standings
23:01yeah no doubt
23:02especially because
23:03we've got such a
23:04close battle
23:05as you kind of
23:05alluded to Chris
23:06there
23:06basically
23:08what
23:08third
23:09Nile
23:10down to
23:11even outside
23:12the top 10
23:13you know
23:13you're looking
23:14looking down
23:14James Wharton
23:1515th
23:15who's got
23:1819 points
23:19you know
23:20he plays 60
23:20but when you say
23:21you've got all the
23:22points available
23:22on the weekend
23:2326 available on
23:24Sunday for the
23:25feature race
23:26if you get
23:26fastest lap
23:27you've then got
23:2710 plus the
23:28points for the
23:29pole position
23:29as well
23:30there's a lot
23:30of points still
23:31to go
23:31and with the
23:32addition of those
23:32points that we've
23:33got at the end
23:34of the year
23:34for that additional
23:35feature race at the
23:35Madgering too
23:36as we see someone
23:36locking up down
23:37towards turn 1
23:38there's an opportunity
23:39for drivers to really
23:40get themselves into the
23:41hunt launch themselves
23:42inside the top 10
23:43maybe even the top 5
23:45I mean if you're out to
23:45the top 10 I think
23:46the championship is
23:47unlikely at this stage
23:48but you can still
23:49put yourself in the
23:50shop window as we
23:51often say for the
23:52Formula 1 teams
23:53you have a strong end
23:53to the season
23:54maybe you're struggling
23:55for funding for next
23:56year you can put
23:56yourself in the shop
23:57window show some
23:58really impressive stuff
23:59on circuit
23:59you might be able
24:00to get yourself
24:01some support
24:02some funding
24:02or just some
24:04genuine support
24:04behind the scenes
24:05to go again next
24:06year even if
24:07either in F3
24:08or F2
24:09or in the career
24:10elsewhere
24:10so all is not
24:12lost at this stage
24:13Maciej Gratis
24:14became the second
24:15Polish winner
24:16with that win
24:17at Silverstone
24:18almost
24:19almost didn't make
24:21it to the podium
24:22having made his way
24:23into the national
24:25straight pit lane
24:26finishing fourth
24:26on the road
24:27ironically
24:27when Roman
24:28Belinsky won
24:29at Monza
24:30it came after
24:32the race as well
24:32so both have
24:34taken very good
24:35victories for their
24:36team but I'm sure
24:38he'll want to get
24:38back there and hear
24:39that national anthem
24:40played out around
24:41the circuit
24:42but what a performance
24:43from him overall
24:45I must say he drove
24:46an excellent race
24:47didn't he Gratis
24:47he was right there
24:48he was looking
24:49racing we said
24:49at times he was
24:50coming on strong
24:50in the middle of the
24:51race was absolutely
24:52committed in terms
24:53of his overtaking
24:54and ultimately put
24:56himself in a position
24:57to
24:58get a podium
24:59he was in a position
25:00to get the podium
25:00came over the line
25:01in fourth
25:03that's why he was
25:03late to the podium
25:04because someone
25:05was it Niall
25:05Niall
25:06Niall got the penalty
25:07which was applied
25:07straight away
25:08that ART didn't realise
25:09so he had to then
25:10make the fairly
25:11extensive trip
25:12across the paddock
25:14across
25:14and then only just
25:15made the podium
25:15how bad would it have
25:16been if he'd have
25:17missed the podium
25:17for his first race win
25:19I know
25:21I think it was a bit
25:22of an extended
25:23cool down
25:24whilst we waited
25:24for him to get there
25:26because if you've
25:26never been to
25:27Silverstone
25:27that is a long way
25:29to go from that
25:30pit lane to another
25:31but Maciej Gratis
25:33you could tell
25:34that he was not
25:35only out of breath
25:36from doing a feature
25:37race but then the
25:38long run over
25:39to the paddock
25:41and just as we talk
25:42about him doing well
25:43Maciej Gratis goes
25:44fastest 206.5
25:46it was a 204.2
25:47the pole position
25:49time here from
25:49Brad Benavides
25:50last year
25:51Pedro Claro
25:52fastest by 1,000
25:53maybe the longest
25:54circuit Piers
25:55but look how close
25:56it is out there
25:57I say that
25:58Freddy Slater now
25:59goes quickest
25:59by 2 tenths
26:00let's see what
26:01the response will be
26:01for Mugachuku
26:02absolutely slinging
26:04the car through
26:04the last chicane
26:05there
26:06because Mugachuku
26:06oversteer one way
26:07to the other
26:07can't match the pace
26:09of Gwadish Claro
26:10and Slater
26:11but yeah you're right
26:12Chris
26:12just worth noting
26:14the times we see
26:14in this practice
26:15session will be
26:15slightly different
26:16to what we expect
26:17in qualifying
26:17this session the
26:18teams will all use
26:19their one practice
26:21set of hard tyres
26:22we then have the
26:23medium tyre
26:25for qualifying in the
26:26race which will be
26:27three sets of tyres
26:28per car
26:29per driver
26:30which they can use
26:31through qualifying
26:32in the races
26:32as they see fit
26:33and we will
26:35therefore with a
26:36slightly softer
26:37compound for qualifying
26:38you can see the
26:38times drop down
26:39a little bit
26:39so with this hard tyre
26:40the teams basically
26:42will be getting a feel
26:42for the overall
26:43balance of the car
26:44is it performing
26:46how the driver likes
26:47is it giving them
26:48too much front grip
26:49too much rear grip
26:50or not enough
26:51of either
26:52and also they'll be
26:53judging how the
26:55tyres are faring
26:55as best they can
26:56extrapolating what
26:57happens to the
26:58hard tyre
26:58onto the medium
26:59because we see
27:00on high speed
27:01long corners
27:02with high load
27:03on the tyres
27:04generally the front
27:04tyres fall away
27:06we saw the front
27:06left it was at
27:07Silverstone was the
27:08one that was getting
27:09mostly abused
27:10and similarly here at
27:12Spa with a lot of
27:12the long corners
27:13you see the front tyres
27:13getting more of the
27:15weighting of the wear
27:16somewhat of a
27:17breakthrough weekend
27:18for Louis Sharp
27:19he had his best
27:20qualifying and best
27:21result in Formula 3
27:23as well did the
27:25Kiwi
27:25let's hear what he
27:26had to say about
27:27that Silverstone
27:28weekend coming into
27:29this one
27:31the circuit is
27:32fantastic
27:32I think it's
27:33probably one of
27:35maybe even the
27:35most iconic tracks
27:36in the world
27:37obviously like
27:38super undulating
27:39tight
27:40super high speed
27:41but then there's
27:42also some lower
27:42speed stuff
27:43off camber
27:44this track's got
27:46everything
27:47I think in terms
27:48of driving
27:49I do think
27:49I normally go
27:51quite well
27:51at these
27:51older school tracks
27:53which maybe
27:53take a bit more
27:55bravery
27:56let's say
27:57and I think
27:57a bit more
27:58on the limit
27:58than some other
27:59tracks
28:00I think this
28:00does suit me
28:01so I am
28:01looking forward
28:02to that
28:02obviously
28:02there's super
28:03long straights
28:03here so I
28:04think in
28:04qualifying
28:05especially
28:05everyone's
28:06going to be
28:06trying to go
28:06after the
28:07toe
28:07which makes
28:08things difficult
28:08I think
28:09it's easy
28:09to trip
28:10over people
28:11but I think
28:11if we're able
28:12to get a
28:13clean session
28:13and to get
28:14a clean few
28:15laps in qualifying
28:15I think this
28:16type of track
28:17normally does
28:18suit me
28:19Louis Sharp
28:19talking about
28:20the circuit
28:21there
28:22has great
28:22history
28:23at Silverstone
28:24and I think
28:25showed that
28:25over the course
28:27of the Silverstone
28:28weekend
28:28and it's a
28:29track here
28:29appears
28:30he also
28:31has good
28:31history
28:32as you
28:32very well
28:33know
28:33yeah
28:33I was here
28:34in 2024
28:35it would have
28:36been
28:36when he was
28:36racing in
28:37GB3
28:37a Formula
28:38regional level
28:40championship
28:40similar cars
28:41and he got a
28:41double podium
28:42that weekend
28:42so knows the
28:43circuit well
28:44can race
28:45race at this
28:45circuit
28:46I think we've
28:46had testing
28:47in different
28:47conditions as
28:48well
28:48so Sharp
28:48will feel
28:49confident
28:49going into
28:49this weekend
28:50and hopefully
28:51he can
28:52continue that
28:52form
28:53Prima
28:53again last
28:54year were
28:55pretty strong
28:55they've had
28:56difficult times
28:56as we've
28:57discussed
28:57a number of
28:58occasions
28:59with the
29:00introduction of
29:01this new car
29:01last year
29:02they didn't have
29:03the strongest
29:03season
29:03but they were
29:04strong last
29:05season
29:06actually was
29:07second place
29:08wasn't he
29:08in the race
29:09in the sprint
29:09race
29:09the only race
29:10we had last
29:10year
29:11you can see
29:12Sharp just
29:13making his way
29:13back into the
29:14pit lane
29:14we saw
29:15Teofil Nile
29:15in there
29:16the Campos
29:16team just
29:17seemingly
29:17checking some
29:19things on
29:19the car
29:20with him
29:21but now
29:21we look
29:22on track
29:22at the
29:23Van Ammer
29:24Sport driver
29:24Enzo
29:25De Ligny
29:26another driver
29:27who has
29:27good history
29:28around this
29:30circuit
29:30went very well
29:31here in
29:32Formula
29:32regional
29:33last season
29:34took a
29:34double podium
29:35and race
29:35win
29:36and Enzo
29:37De Ligny
29:37just making
29:38his way
29:39out of
29:39Jackie
29:39X corner
29:40a driver
29:41who has
29:41had some
29:42good weekends
29:43hasn't he
29:44so far
29:44but it's
29:45just been
29:46consistency
29:46he's struggled
29:47with a little
29:48bit so far
29:49it's his first
29:49season
29:50of course
29:51but the
29:51Van Ammer
29:51Sport team
29:52are having
29:53a really
29:54good campaign
29:55overall
29:55they've got
29:56a great trio
29:57of drivers
29:58and they
29:59haven't really
30:00had a weekend
30:01where they've
30:01not been
30:02fighting towards
30:02the front
30:03yeah
30:03VAR
30:04definitely
30:04we've spoken
30:05about it
30:05they've taken
30:06a step
30:06forward
30:07this year
30:07I think
30:07they've
30:07probably
30:07sitting
30:08third
30:08in the
30:08standings
30:09if my
30:09memory
30:09sits me
30:10correctly
30:10it does
30:12but yeah
30:13De Ligny
30:13he started
30:14the season
30:14well didn't he
30:15with his
30:15second place
30:15on debut
30:17unfortunately
30:18hasn't been able
30:18to match
30:18since then
30:19he had a
30:19strong pair
30:20of results
30:21in Catalonia
30:22for Barcelona
30:23but then
30:23it's just
30:24gone through
30:24a bit of
30:24a slump
30:25in terms
30:26of the results
30:26after the
30:27weekends
30:27no point
30:28scores
30:28at either
30:29the Red Bull
30:29ring
30:29at Silverstone
30:30but he'll be
30:30looking to push
30:31on forwards
30:32and also
30:32that's come
30:32at a time
30:33when his
30:33teammates
30:33have really
30:34taken a step
30:35forward as
30:35well
30:35we've seen
30:36Hiyu Yamakoshi
30:37especially over
30:37one lap
30:38has been
30:39exceptional
30:39of course
30:40he was
30:40pole
30:40wasn't he
30:42and then
30:43also
30:43took some
30:44really good
30:44results
30:44so
30:45he'll be
30:46looking to
30:46come to a
30:47circuit
30:47that he
30:47knows
30:48here
30:48and try
30:49and match
30:50the pace
30:50of his
30:51teammates
30:51and show
30:51what he
30:52can do
30:52because we
30:52know
30:52he's a
30:53front running
30:53driver
30:53he just
30:54hasn't had
30:54the opportunity
30:54to show
30:55it consistently
30:55yet this
30:55season
31:01just under
31:0215 minutes
31:03to go
31:03the team
31:04is taking
31:04time to
31:05come into
31:06the pit
31:06lane
31:06I'm sure
31:07we'll see
31:07them back
31:07out
31:08let's see
31:08what's
31:08happened
31:08with
31:09Finn
31:10McLaughlin
31:11coming
31:11through
31:12piff-paff
31:12chicane
31:13there
31:15he's got
31:15a lot
31:15to learn
31:16being the
31:17only driver
31:17out there
31:18making his
31:18debut
31:18this is a
31:19tricky circuit
31:20to learn
31:20there's a
31:21lot to
31:21learn
31:21out there
31:21and
31:23just
31:23finding
31:24a little
31:24bit
31:24of the
31:24gravel
31:25no lack
31:26of commitment
31:26from him
31:27McLaughlin
31:27there
31:27but as
31:28we always
31:29see
31:29he pushes
31:30100%
31:32101%
31:33sometimes
31:33but he's
31:34had a tall
31:34order
31:34we've spoken
31:35about it
31:35before
31:35but I
31:35think it's
31:36worth
31:36mentioning
31:36again
31:37one of
31:37the youngest
31:37drivers
31:38the only
31:39driver
31:39that's
31:39come
31:39straight
31:40from a
31:40Formula 4
31:40level
31:41championship
31:41this year
31:42which
31:42isn't
31:43common
31:44and
31:45means that
31:45you really
31:46are taking
31:47on a lot
31:47the tyre
31:48compounds
31:49in Formula 4
31:49are so much
31:50harder
31:50than they are
31:51in Formula 3
31:52so therefore
31:53you have to
31:53get used to
31:53pushing a tyre
31:54over one
31:55lap
31:55not overheating
31:56it
31:56the way
31:57that you
31:57drive the
31:58car is
31:58very different
31:59in terms
31:59of your
31:59inputs
32:00in a Formula 4
32:01car you're
32:02sliding it
32:02around quite
32:03a lot
32:03again partly
32:03because of
32:04the tyre
32:04partly because
32:04of the way
32:05the differential
32:05is set up
32:07with these
32:07cars you have
32:08to be a bit
32:08more precise
32:09and then let's
32:09not forget
32:09that at
32:10Formula 4
32:10level
32:10it's the
32:11first step
32:12from karting
32:12for most
32:13drivers
32:13or first
32:13step
32:14in motorsport
32:14whereas
32:15the drivers
32:15he's racing
32:16against
32:16in Formula 3
32:17now
32:17almost all
32:18of them
32:18have won
32:18championships
32:19and races
32:19in other
32:20categories
32:20at a level
32:21above Formula
32:224
32:22and maybe
32:22have won
32:23Formula 4
32:23and even
32:24some drivers
32:24like Ugachuku
32:25have won
32:26in Formula 3
32:27and that's
32:27the level
32:28he's going
32:28up against
32:29but it doesn't
32:29mean that
32:30because the
32:30season hasn't
32:31exactly gone
32:32as well as
32:33he would have
32:33hoped it
32:34it would have
32:34done so far
32:35we saw
32:36Nikola Solov
32:36do exactly
32:37the same
32:37thing in
32:38his three
32:38year campaign
32:39in Formula 3
32:40first season
32:41up in Formula 4
32:42bit rusty
32:43rough around
32:43the edges
32:44second season
32:44came into
32:45his drive
32:45and the last
32:45season
32:46took it right
32:47to Rafa
32:47Kamra in the
32:48end and
32:48nearly took the
32:49title
32:50and that's
32:50with the
32:50Red Bull
32:51junior program
32:51as well
32:52that Finn
32:52McLaughlin
32:52is part of
32:53so he's
32:54starting a
32:54program here
32:55it's a process
32:56of learning
32:56it's a process
32:57of getting
32:57things under
32:58his belt
32:59and also
33:00he'll only
33:01have driven
33:01a Formula 3
33:02car around
33:02Spa
33:02in a
33:04simulator
33:04that is
33:05not to be
33:05underestimated
33:06because the
33:06challenge in
33:07real life
33:07is so vast
33:09Maciej
33:10Gwadish
33:10the Polish
33:11driver
33:12becoming the
33:12second Polish
33:13driver to win
33:14let's hear
33:15his thoughts
33:16coming in
33:17to this
33:17weekend
33:20yeah
33:21honestly
33:21it was
33:21crazy
33:22crazy emotions
33:23I mean
33:24to be honest
33:25it's not a win
33:25I wanted to
33:26take
33:26but
33:27obviously
33:28first win
33:28of the season
33:30yeah
33:30I was lost
33:31after the race
33:32because I asked
33:32my engineer
33:33if I'm third
33:34because
33:34I saw
33:35on the big screen
33:35that I'm
33:36third
33:37so
33:37he said
33:38yeah
33:38maybe there's
33:39some glitch
33:40in TV
33:41or something
33:41so
33:42I decided
33:43to go to
33:44bitlane
33:45where we normally
33:45normally stay
33:47and yeah
33:48then
33:49actually
33:49it was true
33:50so I was
33:50on the podium
33:53then
33:53I got told
33:54that
33:55Mateo
33:56and Ernesto
33:57might get a penalty
33:58so then I heard
33:59that
33:59Ernesto
34:00is for sure
34:00penalized
34:01and then
34:01Mateo
34:02was penalized
34:03I obviously
34:03feel sorry
34:04for Mateo
34:04because
34:05it was his
34:06first win
34:06I mean
34:07for sure
34:08his time
34:08will come
34:09but yeah
34:10it's
34:10nice way
34:11to bounce
34:11back
34:11after a few
34:12tough rounds
34:12now I'm
34:13in sick
34:14position
34:14the championship
34:15so
34:16yeah
34:17it's nice
34:17to be back
34:18and I hope
34:18I'll repeat
34:19this
34:20this weekend
34:22Maciej
34:23Gwadish
34:23lovely
34:24to hear
34:25from him
34:25there
34:25he's had
34:26a really
34:26good career
34:27already
34:27three championship
34:28podiums
34:29in four
34:30campaigns
34:31including
34:31one title
34:32win
34:33and
34:33Maciej
34:34Gwadish
34:35great to hear
34:35the thoughts
34:36there
34:36lovely
34:36what he said
34:37about
34:37Mateo
34:37de Paolo
34:37as well
34:38but I bet
34:38he was lost
34:39going to the
34:40podium
34:41I don't know
34:42if there was
34:42any cameras
34:43that were
34:43following him
34:44but it would
34:44have been
34:44entertaining
34:45and I don't
34:46know
34:46I know
34:46we're a
34:47worldwide
34:47broadcast
34:47but I think
34:48the Benny Hill
34:49music I'm sure
34:50would have been
34:50a good overlay
34:52on top of that
34:53because it would
34:53have been a bit
34:53of a mad dash
34:54and he only
34:55just made it
34:55didn't he
34:55just in time
34:56for the
34:58national anthems
34:58but Maciej
35:00amazing to me
35:01as well
35:01even now
35:02is that
35:02these drivers
35:03at what
35:04Maciej's
35:0418 years
35:05two months old
35:06and he's able
35:07to articulate
35:08his feelings
35:08and his emotions
35:09and what he's doing
35:10and also be so magnanimous
35:12in victory
35:13or sporting as well
35:15mentioning that
35:16Di Paolo earned that victory
35:17and it was taken away from him
35:18and his time will come
35:19these drivers
35:20they have a lot of respect
35:21for one another
35:22they fight each other
35:23hard on the circuit
35:24a lot of them have come
35:25up the ranks together
35:26through karting
35:27through Formula 4
35:28Formula Regional
35:28Formula 3
35:29a lot of them friends
35:30away from the circuit
35:31as well
35:31some of them not
35:31but they still respect each other
35:33because they know
35:33they're part of the same
35:35journey really
35:36they're all aiming for Formula 1
35:39and trying to forge a career
35:40in motorsport
35:41and also
35:41no more reminders
35:43of the fact that
35:44they're all in it together
35:44than when we come to Spa
35:45and have that
35:47memorial for the drivers
35:48that we've lost
35:49because ultimately
35:49it's a passion
35:52and a goal
35:52that they all share
35:53and unfortunately
35:54we know
35:55that unfortunately
35:56things can happen
35:57so there's good
35:58to have some camaraderie
35:59as well
35:59and it's quite likely
36:02when you look for all 30 drivers
36:03that a good
36:04vast of them
36:05would have been teammates
36:06at some stage
36:07be it in karting
36:09F4
36:09Formula Regional Championship
36:11how is it
36:12when you're in the paddock
36:13over the course
36:14of a season
36:15I imagine
36:16there is a really good unit
36:18around the drivers
36:18because you spend
36:19a long time together
36:21travelling all around
36:22don't you
36:22well actually
36:22once you get to the circuit
36:24in the race weekend
36:24so from Thursday
36:25morning, afternoon
36:26right through
36:27till after the feature race
36:28on Sunday
36:29you're very much
36:29in your own little bubble
36:30in terms of performance
36:32getting the most out of yourself
36:33if you're working
36:34with your engineer
36:34talking to your teammates
36:35a little bit
36:35in terms of
36:36if you can bounce stuff
36:37off each other
36:38it depends on the team
36:38rate relationship you have
36:39that's not a time
36:41it's very much
36:41you're working at that point
36:43you're very much
36:43switched on to work
36:44and there's no social
36:45but a lot of the teams
36:47and drivers will travel
36:48to and from the circuits
36:48from the same places
36:49they'll take the same flights
36:50they're in the same paddock
36:52let's not forget
36:52that a lot of these drivers
36:53as well
36:54have had to spend
36:55a lot of time away
36:56from home
36:57they don't often have
36:58the same school
37:00situation
37:00as a normal child
37:03adolescent will have
37:04they don't go to school
37:05probably five days a week
37:06every week
37:07they have to do
37:07homeschooling
37:08or they have a remote schooling
37:09and therefore
37:11they don't have that
37:11sort of friendship groove
37:12maybe
37:13which is one of the
37:13sacrifices
37:14and things that
37:16these drivers have to deal
37:17with as young people
37:18is that they don't have
37:18that stable home life
37:20because they're travelling
37:20so much
37:21therefore their friends
37:22and their social group
37:23and their support network
37:25is often at the track
37:26and that adds to some
37:28of the difficulties
37:29but also means that
37:30you can forge
37:31some real good friendships
37:32and I think about
37:33Solov and Interapuvizak
37:34really came together
37:35they're really in F2 now
37:37they're two good pals
37:38and they were in Formula 3
37:39as teammates last year
37:40so a lot of these drivers
37:42will be racing against
37:42each other now
37:43will be friends for years
37:44decades to come
37:45and we saw the emotion
37:48from Matteo Di Paolo
37:49didn't we after the race
37:50let's have a look back
37:52is that Hiyu Yamakashi
37:53a bit eager to go
37:54well that roading driver
37:56nipped out just ahead
37:58wasn't it
37:58that was Brando Badouwer
38:00someone who could do
38:02with getting the form
38:03back we saw from Monaco
38:04he's had a bit of a tough
38:05time since then
38:07Brando Badouwer
38:08will be hoping
38:09to find that form
38:11that has taken him
38:12onto the podium
38:12a couple of times
38:13this season
38:14and we jump on board
38:15with the Italian now
38:16we're going to see
38:17a bit of a qualifying
38:18simulation
38:20in the final
38:21throws of this
38:22practice session
38:23we've had some drivers
38:23just feeling themselves
38:24out at the moment
38:25it's Claire Owens
38:27and Slater
38:27second and first
38:28with Grealish
38:28those first times
38:30won't be hugely
38:31representative
38:31I mean it's
38:32interesting that Slater
38:33is straight away
38:34at the top of the
38:34front of the field
38:35again
38:35but that will just
38:37be a drivers
38:37getting their eye
38:38and feeding the circuit
38:39having an estimation
38:40of where the grip is
38:40but now they've all
38:41had one proper run
38:42a couple of laps
38:43will go out
38:44for a qualifying
38:44simulation now
38:45they'll be trying
38:46to prep the tyres
38:46as if they would
38:47in qualifying
38:48they'll be trying
38:49to make improvements
38:50from what the teams
38:51and drivers
38:51have spoken about
38:52just a moment
38:52ago with them
38:53in the pits
38:54and to get themselves
38:55in the mental state
38:57to be able to form
38:58over one lap
38:58and feel how
38:59they're going to perform
39:00later on today
39:01which is all important
39:02qualifying session
39:03one lap
39:03is all that's required
39:04later on
39:05to set the grid
39:05for both of the races
39:07we look at
39:07who's sharp
39:08heading onto a flying lap
39:09here at the end
39:10of the session
39:10and a lock up
39:11straight away
39:12that's not what
39:13you want down to
39:13a last horse
39:14it's going to hurt
39:15that front right tyre
39:17and now he's going
39:18to be heading down
39:19towards Eau Rouge
39:21up to Radion
39:22we'll see what he can
39:23do on this final lap
39:24we might see a few
39:25changes and that
39:25is an absolutely
39:26fantastic camera angle
39:28it is very steep
39:30there isn't it
39:30Eau Rouge and Radion
39:31the cameras almost
39:32don't do it justice
39:33sometimes
39:33oh yeah
39:33and I've driven up
39:34there Chris
39:35and it's extremely
39:36steep at the
39:37Eau Rouge and Radion
39:38which is why the
39:38cars smoke out
39:39the back
39:40it's not anything
39:41to do with the
39:41engine
39:41it's the plank
39:42the floor of the
39:43car getting heated
39:44up as it rubs
39:44along the circuit
39:45Louis Sharp
39:46three tenths away
39:47from the fastest
39:48we've seen in
39:49sector one alone
39:49I don't think
39:50we're going to see
39:50huge improvements
39:51on this second lap
39:52because all these
39:53tyres despite them
39:53being a hard tyre
39:54have had the best
39:55of the grip
39:56taken out of them
39:57but Sharp still pushing
39:58on with his teammate
39:59right behind
40:00but that lock up
40:01at turn one
40:01didn't look like it
40:02cost him a huge
40:02amount of time
40:03because he did
40:03make the apex
40:04and a good exit
40:05but again as you
40:06mentioned Chris
40:06not ideal
40:07so we now head
40:07on that long
40:08downhill section
40:09towards Poole
40:10Taffanen will be
40:11investigated after
40:12the session
40:12for an unsafe
40:13release
40:14Baddowair likewise
40:15will also be
40:17investigated after
40:18the session
40:19so we'll keep an
40:19eye on that one
40:20and bring you any
40:21updates in qualifying
40:22Yevon David
40:23has done a
40:24personal best
40:25first sector
40:27the Sri Lankan
40:28driver who took
40:29his first Formula
40:303 podium
40:31at Silverstone
40:32this is another
40:32track he does
40:33have previous
40:34experience of
40:35and this is a
40:36lovely view of
40:37Stavolo
40:38see how close
40:39to the gravel
40:40there there is
40:41absolutely no
40:42room for error
40:43down there
40:43no that curve
40:45on the exit
40:45has been reprofiled
40:46a couple of times
40:46over the last few
40:47years but gravel
40:48right to the exit
40:49so basically track
40:51limits is when you
40:52touch the gravel
40:53so you can literally
40:54go as wide
40:56as you dare
40:57if you drop a wheel
40:57over the back of that
40:58curve there you'll
40:59lose traction which
41:00will hurt your exit
41:00and run all the way
41:02along through
41:03Paul Freire
41:04Blanchemont and then
41:05into this the last
41:06chicane at the bus
41:06stop and then they
41:07exit out of the last
41:08last little short
41:09shoot to get the
41:10traction right
41:11it's important
41:11over the line of
41:12Sharp
41:12nine tenths away
41:14from his best lap
41:14which says to me
41:15that these tyres
41:15definitely have seen
41:16their best and also
41:18Slater there you can
41:18see the bottom
41:19middle he's not
41:20improving either
41:21so as much as a
41:22qualifying simulation
41:23we're not going to
41:23see a huge amount
41:24of change I don't
41:24think
41:25yeah I guess
41:26he's getting the
41:27timings right as
41:28well we watch
41:29Jem and David
41:30coming through
41:31Blanchemont now
41:32and making his way
41:33towards that final
41:35chicane I think he's
41:36toying around
41:37Freddie Slater
41:37just in the
41:39background there
41:40are we going to see
41:40drivers looking for
41:41that in qualifying
41:42this
41:43I think we'll see
41:43a split strategy
41:44I think we'll see
41:45some teams and
41:45drivers choosing to
41:46go with clear errors
41:47we saw a few times
41:49in qualifying at
41:49different events this
41:50season Slater gets
41:51a small improvement
41:53in the last sector
41:53doesn't improve as
41:54old as whole time
41:55isn't actually
41:55technical now jumps
41:56up to second place
41:58he's now second
41:58faster so he managed
42:00to find an improvement
42:00where most others
42:01haven't some teams
42:03will choose to go
42:03with a toe and try
42:04and pull each other
42:05along because they're
42:06you know this long
42:07run that we go head
42:07down from the source
42:08all the way up to
42:09Kemmel and and
42:10Lacombe is you know
42:12nearly two kilometers
42:12of flat out running
42:13so there is time to
42:14be gained there but
42:14then the other hat
42:16the other side of the
42:17same the same thing
42:20is that if you've
42:21got a toe then
42:22that also means you've
42:22got dirty air to that
42:23middle sector so I
42:24think some teams
42:25will be looking for
42:26it some teams will
42:26be just going for
42:27clear air
42:27yeah good to see
42:29Teofil now for a good
42:30time on the board
42:31there as well we saw
42:32him sat in the pit
42:34lane for a little
42:35while but if there
42:37were any issues they
42:39clearly have now been
42:39resolved Taito Kato
42:41goes up to eighth
42:42his teammate Kanato
42:44Lee also jumped up
42:46the order there
42:47there are some track
42:48limits coming in
42:49we're seeing quite a lot
42:50of it through the final
42:52chicane where drivers
42:53are going four wheels
42:55over we look at the
42:57quickest driver Freddy
42:58Slater was quickest at
42:59Silverstone quickest here
43:01once again that will give
43:03him a confidence boost if
43:05he needed one already but
43:07really great stuff and now
43:09he's leading around the queue
43:10here yeah I think no one
43:11wants to overtake him I think
43:13this is going to be a feature
43:15as well we saw this last year
43:16at this point of the circuit
43:18qualifying we had about four
43:19abreast on the lap tour or
43:22the warm-up lap towards the
43:24final run in qualifying as
43:25everyone was justling for
43:26position trying to either get
43:27a toe or not get held up but
43:30interesting Chris isn't it
43:31that even in this practice
43:32session Slater fastest again
43:35and the fast high-speed
43:36circuit so clearly Slater and
43:38the Trident car very
43:39comfortable at high-speed
43:40corners leading on that
43:41double this is what we saw in
43:42qualifying last year but the
43:44rest of the field a second
43:45takes you down to 24th place
43:47on the longest circuit that
43:49we have on the calendar seven
43:50kilometers and four meters
43:52long apparently but yeah look
43:54at this Chris this is this is
43:54a dress rehearsal for
43:55qualifying we're not getting
43:56ready for a rolling star this
43:58is the end of practice and no
44:01one wants to overtake Freddie
44:03Slater right now so it will
44:04be two by two through curve
44:07Paul Frere who is going to
44:09blink first is the the question
44:10there is a blue flag going out
44:12but you can see Freddie Slater
44:15has now been passed oh my this
44:16is just getting a little bit
44:18out of hand now isn't it you
44:19said he's going to blink first
44:20Chris blink I've got my eyes
44:21closed this is crazy yeah this
44:24is only practice everyone by
44:25the way at home just practice
44:27session everyone just address
44:29your house will qualify yeah but
44:33you can see some drivers you've
44:35got I think that's Jin Nakamura
44:38has just overtaken about six
44:39cars into the final chicane and in
44:42terms of has anyone got a toe I
44:44don't think so well I think
44:46everyone's gonna be a bit too
44:47close everyone will have a toe
44:48but they also if they stuck
44:49right underneath the rear wing of
44:51the drivers in front then they'll
44:52have an issue but also a note from
44:54race director in the door the
44:55driver's briefing the driver's
44:56notes is nearly contact that was
44:57LaCorte going down the inside of
45:01it I think that was Barrichello yeah
45:03they weren't really too happy with
45:05each other there but got to be
45:07careful in a practice session yeah I
45:09don't think we're going to be seeing
45:10exactly that situation in qualifying
45:12because in the driver's briefing
45:15race director Simon Ganana-Praguesen
45:17says that all drivers on the racing
45:20line must be at racing speed by the
45:23apex of Blanchiment in qualifying so
45:25you can't be on the racing line going
45:27slowly as we saw lots of drivers do
45:28into the bus stop chicane for fairly
45:30obvious reasons we don't want a
45:31driver coming around Blanchiment flat
45:33out nearly 300 kilometers an hour but
45:35another driver is is going you know
45:37walking pace because that closing
45:39speed is of course a safety hazard so
45:42I don't think we'll see as much
45:44jostling because they know that
45:45their lap times will be deleted their
45:46race direction and stewards will be
45:47quite happy to remove drivers lap
45:49times if they're putting other
45:50drivers in in harm's way as we see
45:52Freddy Slater still pushing on again
45:54a second flying lap on this hard
45:56tire which will be going in the
45:57pretty much in the bin after this
45:58session because we then use the
46:00mediums for the rest of the weekend
46:01but let's have a look and see what it's
46:02like to be Freddy Slater dancing a
46:05tried a formula 3 car around the circuit
46:07wow you could see how much so it's from
46:08said not not Slater my mistake you can
46:11see how much commitment there was
46:12through the final chicane there the
46:14steering wheel back and forth as the
46:15rear of the car was waving around as
46:17Stromstead was absolutely on the limit of
46:19grip but Stromstead was the one that
46:21managed to get through the grip the
46:23group there and get some clear out of
46:25clear air out in front but look how much
46:26less distracting that would be for him
46:28to be able to extract the most out of the
46:30car up towards the final chicane we have
46:34louis sharp going quick to shoot the
46:35first sector but there were people
46:36getting very heavy toes so we'll see if
46:40that continues throughout the rest of
46:41the lap Stromstead it's coming around the
46:43final corner and out seem like I'm in
46:46time either there did it because some
46:49cars have already taken the checker flag
46:50that could be a a worry for teams going
46:54into qualifying as well you've got to
46:57get across the line in time doesn't
46:59look like we're going to get any huge
47:01improvements James Wharton has had a lap
47:04time deleted so has dropped down the
47:05order but yeah that's something they
47:07from this practice session I think that
47:09will be learned I think is this the cue
47:11that all took the flag believe so so
47:14they'll roll into pitlane yeah that's
47:16something that the drivers especially at
47:18the front of the championship our top
47:19five six drivers will be wanting to
47:21avoid they'll come into the debrief after
47:24this session with the team and say I
47:25don't want to be in the middle or the
47:27back of that group because I can't afford
47:31to not get a laughing at the end of
47:32qualifying let's jump on board let's see
47:33what it's like in the middle of that
47:34fray as you can see yeah that was
47:36Tapanen moving across and Gwadish has
47:40his hands up they're really not too happy
47:42and this was Barrichello and Lecorte and
47:49Lecorte well showing his feelings with that one
47:51a bit of aggressive car positioning is
47:54how I will uh it's like the quickest in
47:59the session overall the Audi junior
48:02showing why he has that backing this
48:04season currently sits second in the
48:06championship I think we did see some
48:08drivers rolling up to do practice
48:11starts but uh what a session it has been
48:14for Slater lots of variation of teams
48:17up towards the front Campos look
48:19incredibly strong three cars in the top
48:22six but it's Trident ahead of Campos
48:24road in for Pedro Claro
48:26Machi Gwadish for ART off the back of
48:30his win last time out in fourth then
48:31Rivera, Okachuku, Sharp, Taito Kato,
48:35Tapanen, Lecorte, Christian Ho who could
48:37really do with a good result in 11th
48:40Matei Kulnaghi in 12th if you're new to
48:42Formula 3 the top 12 are reversed in
48:45qualifying which happens later they'll be
48:47reversed for the lowest scoring sprint
48:49race tomorrow
48:51it's interesting isn't it Chris that
48:53we've got what one point Scott is just a
48:55little way off the back but everyone
48:56else 1.3 seconds it's basically a percent
48:59just one percent covering pretty much the
49:03whole field yeah on the longest lap you
49:06know one of the most corner is the most
49:07corners in the 19 corners 20 corners
49:10something like that so shows quite the
49:13level is one of the circuits the drivers
49:14and teams know best it features on pretty
49:17much every junior single seater championship
49:20calendar up to Formula 3 as well so the
49:23teams and drivers know how to extract the
49:24most out of a single seater there's one
49:26thing knowing what to do but then being
49:27able to actually extract it in the all
49:29important qualifying session is something a bit different
49:33Pedro Claro we've seen him on the podium we've
49:35seen him do the move of the season so far I
49:37think that still remains the move of the season so far
49:39around the outside of Red Bull Ring I think it'll
49:42be an absolutely outstanding move that out
49:45does that one because I don't think I've seen
49:47anyone go around the outside of that corner
49:49very well on one car let alone two in one move
49:53so Claro racecraft no question pace just needs
49:56to prove that he could do it more consistently
49:57to be able to be fighting for the championship
49:59but he's there or thereabouts isn't he he's still in the top
50:0210 in the championship currently sits eighth
50:04let's talk race starts here then it's a short run to that
50:07first corner but then a real pinch point isn't it into a
50:10hairpin as well so getting off the line pretty crucial
50:14you we've seen cars before getting quite a bit of time
50:18throughout that first corner yeah getting off the line is
50:20crucial but actually I would say something less important
50:22here than maybe somewhere like Barcelona where we've had
50:25that absolutely gigantic run from the grid towards turn
50:27one it's more about car positioning through the source
50:31the hairpin and then also positioning yourself in terms of
50:33the toe would you want to go left or right as we head down the
50:36hill towards a Rouge and Radial and then also Kemmel choosing
50:39your position choosing your toe placing the car well so that
50:41you're minimizing risk of contact but also maximizing the
50:45toe because we've seen how many times over the years drivers
50:48get past just through pure straight line speed and you know
50:51the one thing you don't want to do is run two wheels on the
50:54gravel on the exit of the source on the first lap that we
50:56often see drivers do exactly that that's been the change you
51:00can see the gravel on the left there so you can't go wide onto a
51:03time at runoff so to speak well that ends practice let's remind
51:06you of the result in four it's freddie slater for trident
51:09quickest overall 206.3 teofil nal third in the championship in
51:14second then pedro clara third match a gradish fourth and
51:17nesta rivera doing very well in fifth place our championship
51:21leader hugo who could contribute six then louis sharp
51:24taito kato tuka tapanen and nicola lakorte for dams christian ho in
51:2911th material nagy 12th bad aware was 13th bruno delpino 14th
51:34matteo de paulo winner on track last time in 15th and alessandro giusti
51:39noah strongsted enzo deligni jin nakamura and gerard chi
51:43rounded out the top 20 incredibly close
51:46out there around a half a second between the top 15 16 drivers
51:51given david's 21st canato lee in 22nd then hiyu yamakoshi fernando barry
51:57kello jose garfias james wharton finn mclaughlin
52:01nandavood birambati 28th rupian shin
52:05in 29th ricardo escotto was in 30th place
52:09that is all for practice qualifying will be at three o'clock
52:14local time here in belgium that'll set the grid
52:17for both the sprint race tomorrow and the feature race
52:21on grand prix sunday make sure you join us then
52:23for now from myself chris mccarthy and pierce bryer
52:27it's goodbye
52:40that's all for now
