Cop saves life: Kalamazoo officer saves life of choking woman during traffic stop

A police officer in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is being hailed a hero after he saved the life of a female driver choking on food.

Dash cam video captured the incident, which took place on August 9 just before noon. Public Safety Officer Jason Gates noticed a vehicle run a red light. He pulled the driver over, intending to give her a warning.

That’s when he noticed the woman appearing to have trouble breathing. He tried to dislodge the item in her throat by hitting on her back. When that didn’t work, he resorted to the Heimlich maneuver, which he had never used in his nine years as a police officer.

Video of the life-saving traffic stop has since gone viral. The woman has not been identified, but Jason Gates wished her well.
