Curiosity Rover Gets First Rock Sample from Mars

Curiosity rover gets the first drilled rock sample from Mars.

NASA’s Rover named Curiosity has been a busy bee. New images taken by Curiosity have confirmed that the robot has been able to successfully collect rock substance from Mars.

This is an astonishing feat, as no other rover has ever drilled into or collected samples from another planet besides the one we currently live on. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California recently released the images showing the world the powdered rock specimen.

A drill systems engineer for Curiosity states “Many of us have been working toward this day for years. Getting final confirmation of successful drilling is incredibly gratifying”.

The Curiosity team plans to separate the sample to send portions to the rover’s various analytical instruments, which may determine the planet’s prior environmental conditions.

NASA has been keep the public constantly updated since Curiosity's launch. Prior to the successful drilling, another image depicted Curiosity in a flat area on Mars called, 'John Klein' which was selected as the site for the drilling activities.
