Curiosity collects the second Mars rock sample.
NASA has announced that the Curiosity Rover on Mars has collected a second rock sample for testing by drilling a hole in a rock and collecting the dust for analysis.
The Mars rover took a break from activity for a month.
Now that it’s back in action, drilling the hole in a rock named “Cumberland,” and collecting the dust sample was the first item of business.
Curiosity’s onboard equipment will analyze the dust sample and send the data to NASA scientists.
Analysis of the first rock sample taken in February showed that ancient Mars might have been a good environment to support microbial life forms.
The latest rock sample is from a 2 point 6 inch hole in a rock that is about nine feet away from the first sample.
Curiosity will analyze the dust in the hope of confirming the initial findings.
Curiosity is the third rover to land on Mars and make important discoveries about our planetary neighbor.
The first two rovers, Opportunity and Spirit landed on Mars during January of 2004.
