Fukushima nuclear plant worker dies after falling into water storage tank

A worker at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant died on Tuesday after falling into a water storage tank.

The deceased worker, reportedly in his 50s, was inspecting an empty water tank with two other workers. He fell into the 10-metre tall tank and Monday and died the day after at a hospital, AFP and Reuters reported.

The death is the second in a year at the plant, which in 2011 was the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. In March last year, a worker at the plant died after being buried under gravel while digging a ditch.

Tokyo Electric has deployed nearly 7,000 workers to clean up the crippled nuclear plant. Reuters reported that the number of accidents at the plant has totalled 55 this fiscal year.

A worker at a sister plant of the Fukushima Daiichi plant was injured while inspecting equipment at a facility sorting radioactive waste on Tuesday.
