Twin Verses
Suffering pursues the evil-doer, as the cart-wheel the hoof of the draught ox .
1. Manopubbaṅgamā dhammā Mind precedes all knowables,
manoseṭṭā manomayā mind's their chief, mind-made are they .
manasā ce paduṭṭhena if with a corrupted mind
bhāsati vā karoti vā one should either speak or act
tato naṃ dukkhamanveti dukkha follows caused by that,
cakkaṃ'va vahato padaṃ. (1:1)
as does the wheel the ox's hoof .
