Reggae icon Bob Marley's children Ziggy and Karen were on hand in Los Angeles on Tuesday (August 7) for what was officially being proclaimed as "Bob Marley Day."

The younger Marleys were accompanied by several children and other family members for the ceremony that took place in Los Angeles City Hall during the city council meeting.

The Jamaican-born Ziggy says the honor could not come at a better time.

SOUNDBITE Ziggy Marley saying (English):

"Jamaica celebrated 50 years of independence yesterday and now we're talking about Bob, who's basically a national hero of Jamaica, not officially but unofficially. And the Olympics, we are in the headlines of the Olympics too so, everything is for a reason, everything working together."

The Marley family is also celebrating the DVD release of "Marley," a documentary based on the life of Bob Marley, best known for popularizing reggae with songs such as "One Love" and "No Woman, No Cry," who died in 1981 after months of battling cancer. He was 36.
