00:00The high-end stuff just maybe isn't worth it. I think my normal makeup looks better than this.
00:05Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the buzziest makeup,
00:09skincare, and haircare buys that may not quite live up to the hype.
00:13It kind of smells like strawberries. I would totally buy this again. 5 out of 5 stars.
00:20Number 20. Harsh Physical Facial Scrubs. That freshly buffed feeling can be gratifying,
00:25but more friction is not necessarily better.
00:28Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin.
00:32If you choose to exfoliate, it's important to do so safely.
00:36Mechanical exfoliation relies on brushes, pads, or gritty formulas to manually lift dead cells from
00:42the skin, and sensitive skin is more likely to become irritated or inflamed by exfoliation.
00:47Acne-prone complexions have another reason to be cautious. The Mayo Clinic advises avoiding
00:52facial scrubs because the irritation they cause can aggravate breakouts.
00:56These are the type of scrubs I used when I had acne as a kid, because I go and I
00:59get
00:59that clean and clear, and I just try to scrub my acne off, and it just doesn't work like
01:03that. So I just feel like physical exfoliants are just way too harsh for the face.
01:07That doesn't make every textured product a villain. Gentleness and individual tolerance
01:11still matter. But anything that encourages enthusiastic scouring feels wildly overrated when
01:17skincare should leave your face cared for, not feeling like you just sanded a coffee table.
01:21Once you have micro tears, all these harmful substances can get into your skin very easily,
01:28which would make your skin ultra-irritated or even cause you to have skin infections.
01:33Number 19. Pore vacuums. Watching one of these gadgets yank visible gunk from skin is undeniably
01:39satisfying, but the payoff may be smaller than the spectacle.
01:42The first part that I tried, um, the vacuum suction with the bigger nozzle, the stronger
01:47nozzle, it's still quite red. I feel like I kind of semi-bruised it.
01:52University of Utah Health says at-home devices have only been shown to help with blackheads
01:56that are already relatively easy to extract. And despite the pore branding, Cleveland Clinic
02:02notes that pore size is largely genetic and cannot be permanently shrunk.
02:06How to shrink your pores. Whoa, can it be even done? Can it be even done? And it can't.
02:10You can't shrink your pores. Your pores are genetic. But what we can do is many different
02:14techniques to help you minimize the appearance of your pores.
02:17Suction can also be too aggressive, with dermatologist Christina Collins warning of bruising,
02:23broken capillaries, or irritation.
02:24I think the highest risk, other than a breakout, if you're having too much suction in an area,
02:29you can really get blood vessels that are going to be visible.
02:33Right.
02:34So you can traumatize your skin. So I'm going to give you a hiccup.
02:36For actual blackheads, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends a retinoid to unclog
02:41pores. That's a lot of risk and gadgetry for such limited results. Beauty trends come and go,
02:46but Ms. Mojo is always in style. Scan the QR code on screen to join our 24-7 live stream

02:53In sum, not approved by Dr. Fiki.
02:57Not approved by the poor...
03:00Queen.
03:01Yes, poor queen.
03:02That's right.
03:02Own it.
03:03It looks good.
03:03It looks good.
03:04They sell it.
03:04They sell it well.
03:05Yeah.
03:06Number 18. Viral skincare ingredients.
03:09A buzzy active can become an overnight celebrity long before the evidence catches up.
03:13This machine is extracting the slime from snails in the name of beauty.
03:20It will end up in skincare products around the world to repair and moisturize the skin.
03:25Snail mucin has been studied for hydration, anti-aging, acne, scarring, and hyperpigmentation.
03:31While a review of Korean cosmeceuticals also discusses ingredients like bee venom and synthetic
03:36snake venom.
03:37The catch? A 2024 review found most snail mucin studies were preclinical or small clinical trials
03:44and called for larger research.
03:45There's always emerging ingredients that get hyped up, and I'm always skeptical of them.
03:50I always say just stick with your retinols, stick with the things that actually work.
03:53One randomized study did report improvements in skin roughness, firmness, and elasticity with a
03:58snail-derived regimen, but its authors likewise said larger controlled studies were needed.
04:03Trendy doesn't mean useless.
04:05It just shouldn't automatically mean miracle worker.
04:08Most skincare routines fail for one reason.
04:10People chase random ingredients, whatever's trending or going viral, instead of actually
04:16understanding what your skin needs, and everyone's different.
04:19Number 17.
04:20Cleansing Brushes
04:21A buzzing gadget can make an ordinary face wash feel impressively high-tech.
04:26The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying cleanser with your fingertips,
04:30warning that other tools can irritate skin, and that scrubbing does too.
04:34Use your fingertips to apply cleanser.
04:36Using a washcloth, mesh sponge, or anything other than your fingertips can irritate your skin.
04:41The Mayo Clinic similarly says washing twice daily with a gentle cleanser is enough for
04:46acne-prone skin, while excessive scrubbing can worsen acne.
04:49To be fair, a 2019 cohort study reported improvements after four weeks of a gentle sonic brush cleansing
04:55routine with no adverse effects.
04:58Some people said it made them really dry, and some people said it made them break out.
05:01Personally, I've had an excellent experience with the Clarisonic.
05:04I find that it gives me a really, really deep clean.
05:07So the problem isn't every device.
05:09It's paying extra for a complicated step when a decidedly low-tech approach may already do the job.
05:14Nobody needs a 12-step skincare routine.
05:18Nobody.
05:19Nobody needs to be spending thousands and countless of hours on products.
05:25It's not productive.
05:26It's not realistic.
05:27Number 16.
05:28Neck Cream.
05:29Girl, I hope I didn't run out of time.
05:32I gotta hurry it up.
05:33Your neck absolutely deserves skincare, but it may not need its own little luxury category.
05:39Dermatologist Shilpi Katerpal says many of the same products used on the face can also address
05:43signs of aging on the neck.
05:44Neck creams are not bad products at all, but if you can tolerate things that you're putting
05:49on your face, on your neck, they kind of serve the same purpose.
05:52The area can be thinner and more sensitive, though, so she recommends lower-strength retinoids
05:57there because it has fewer oil glands and is more prone to dryness and irritation.
06:01The American Academy of Dermatology also specifically says to apply sunscreen to the neck.
06:06Translation.
06:07Treat the area thoughtfully, but a separate cream isn't automatically doing something your existing
06:12routine can't.
06:13If you're going to invest in a neck product, just make sure it is vetted and is going to
06:17do what you expect it to.
06:19Number 15.
06:20Natural Essential Oil Skin Care.
06:22I use this on my skin every night, and it's rose oil.
06:26Rose is so, so good for you.
06:29And sometimes I add a little boost in mine, so I'll add other essential oils in it, depending
06:33on what my goals are.
06:35Plant-derived doesn't automatically mean skin-friendly, no matter how soothing the label looks.
06:40The FDA explicitly warns that an ingredient source does not determine its safety, and
06:45says there is no formal FDA definition for natural.
06:48This misconception that natural is better, you know, very commonly people will say, I
06:52only want to use natural products, and I only want to eat natural foods, and that's just
06:58not how it works.
06:59Essential oils also have a documented allergy risk.
07:02A dermatology review identified contact allergy reports involving almost 80 essential oils,
07:07particularly after undiluted or concentrated use.
07:10Some citrus oils can even be phototoxic depending on their composition.
07:14Essential oils may smell lovely, but piling them into skincare under a wellness halo can
07:19turn clean beauty into a surprisingly irritating proposition.
07:23You do not have to spend good money, well not good money, spend lots of money to get good
07:28quality, safe products.
07:30All your cosmetics are safe, when used as directed.
07:34Number 14.
07:35Jade Rollers.
07:36Oh, Gregory, a jade roller is usually made out of jade, and it's a roller.
07:40Oh, this.
07:41I'm just touching up my new beard.
07:43The immediate glow is real enough.
07:45The lasting transformation is where the fantasy starts.
07:48The Cleveland Clinic says facial rolling results usually tend to fade within a few hours.
07:52Cosmetic dermatologist Michelle Green says rollers can temporarily boost circulation and
07:57reduce puffiness, while UPMC notes they cannot slim your face.
08:01In this day and age, jade rollers are supposed to smooth fine lines, sculpt and tone, and
08:06get rid of toxins and swelling that builds up in your face.
08:09BBC Science Focus adds that meaningful long-term changes are unlikely from a jade roller.
08:15Rose quartz and stainless steel versions are also popular, so the gemstone itself is not
08:19the whole story.
08:20If the ritual relaxes you, roll away.
08:23It's like a nice little moment.
08:25I can treat myself after a long day, and it actually feels really good.
08:30I just love jade rollers.
08:31I could jade roll all day.
08:33As a sculpting must-have, though, this pretty tool may be doing more for the mood than your
08:37cheekbones.
08:38Number 13.
08:39DIY Microneedling.
08:41Social media makes rolling tiny needles over your own face look almost casual.
08:45The American Academy of Dermatology says at-home microneedling can irritate skin, cause infection
08:51or scarring, spread viruses, and trigger changes in color or texture if done improperly.
08:56You can find derma rollers on Amazon from 0.5 millimeters in depth, probably like 2 millimeters
09:03in depth, which is pretty deep in the skin, and you really should not be at home creating
09:07that level of depth of injury to the skin.
09:09It also notes that home devices generally produce less noticeable results than dermatologists
09:14performed treatment.
09:15The Cleveland Clinic similarly warns that medical-grade derma rollers used at home can permanently
09:20damage skin or cause infection.
09:21You're going to be reusing the same microneedles from the device, and they get dull, and that
09:27is problematic for sure.
09:29Professional microneedling has legitimate uses, such as diminishing acne scars and uneven
09:34texture.
09:34But recreating a medical procedure in your bathroom is one beauty shortcut that can cost
09:39more than it saves.
09:41If you have an active acne breakout, if you have rosacea, or if you have eczema or an
09:46inflammatory condition, avoid it.
09:48Because you can further spread bacteria, you can further worsen your acne, you can actually
09:53make your eczema worse.
09:54Number 12, split-end repair products.
09:57Once a strand has frayed, no miracle serum can permanently put it back together.
10:02We can send people to space, but we apparently still cannot unsplit a split end.
10:07A cosmetic science paper found that standard treatments cannot permanently rejoin an already
10:11split strand, although certain polymers can create a semi-permanent effect that rinses
10:16away with shampoo.
10:17The Cleveland Clinic likewise notes that hair cannot repair itself, though olive oil may moisturize
10:23and help limit further breakage.
10:24It's really easy.
10:25You could just take it and sprinkle it on, and then just work it downwards as well.
10:32The AAD recommends conditioner and leave-in products because they can reduce breakage and
10:37split ends.
10:38So these formulas aren't pointless.
10:40They're just better at smoothing and prevention than delivering the permanent repair the packaging
10:44can imply.
10:44Once your hair has physically split, there is nothing on earth that can make those ends come
10:50back together permanently.
10:51Again, you can absolutely use products that help to improve the appearance of split ends,
10:56but that is completely temporary.
10:58Number 11.
10:59Pore shrinking products.
11:00That airbrushed, almost poreless finish may be a tempting promise, but biology has other
11:05plans.
11:06The Cleveland Clinic says genetics mostly determines pore size, and that pores cannot be permanently
11:11shrunk.
11:11You are never going to change the structure of your pore permanently.
11:15You're just not.
11:16Can you enhance its appearance?
11:18Absolutely, but you will never change its structure.
11:22The good news is that skin care can make them look less noticeable.
11:26Keeping them clear of oil and debris and using ingredients like retinol or salicylic acid can
11:31all help.
11:31Using your retinol is going to do a lot of the work that we described, and so I do think
11:35it's foundational to your nighttime skincare routine if you're trying to minimize the appearance
11:39of their pores.
11:39The American Academy of Dermatology also notes that clogged pores can expand and appear more
11:44noticeable.
11:45So these formulas can improve the look of skin, just not permanently resize its underlying
11:50architecture.
11:51Save your money on pore minimizers and just wash your face with what dermatologists recommend
11:55as non-comedogenic.
11:57Number 10, pore strips.
11:59Pore strips have been demonized on social media where people will say you should never use
12:03a pore strip, but an occasional pore strip once a month, once every other month, is going
12:07to remove those tiny bell tears on the skin and can be a nice clean up treatment that you
12:11use like occasionally.
12:13You're probably thinking, pore strips yield such obvious visible results.
12:17They must work, right?
12:18There's no denying the fact it's super satisfying to see all that dirt and grime come off on a
12:22pore strip, but unfortunately it isn't doing much beyond scratching the surface of a bigger
12:27problem.
12:27Visual instant gratification does not equal long-term results.
12:32And I'm just going to hyper-focus on that sentence because we like the fact that we take
12:36out the most superficial layer of our pores, but it's an extremely aggressive movement.
12:40And over time, if you keep doing it, you're going to stretch your pores.
12:42They don't do anything to actually prevent blackheads or decrease your skin's oil production.
12:47If you have an issue with clogged pores, the root problem is occurring much deeper than
12:51the surface level of your skin that a pore strip can penetrate.
12:54As you're tearing up the pore strips, it actually removes part of your epidermal layer and the
13:00layer which is important to protect your skin against nasty bacterias and nasty irritations
13:06from outside.
13:07Number 9.
13:08Cellulite cream.
13:09Creams that claim to firm the skin, creams that claim to stimulate the fat cells into
13:16breaking down, that improve oxygenation, none of this has really been properly proven.
13:22Sadly, there are a lot of products out there that make promises they just can't keep.
13:26One of the most alluring is a cellulite cream.
13:29Because who doesn't want to get rid of that dimpled skin on their thighs?
13:32The problem is, the only things likely to make a real dent in your cellulite are weight
13:36loss and exercise.
13:38What happens when you lose weight?
13:40Roll the other one in.
13:41Well, Denny, what do you think?
13:42Are you impressed by this difference?
13:44I mean, it's better, but it's not gone.
13:46And that's the reality.
13:47It's still uneven on the surface of the skin.
13:49Some products may temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite, but in reality, you're wasting
13:54your money on something that won't make much of a difference.
13:57The same goes for products promising to get rid of stretch marks, but more on that later.
14:01The best thing you can do is realize that cellulite is totally natural and the majority of women
14:05have it.
14:06No need to be self-conscious.
14:07Calling cellulite unsightly, with 85 to 98% of women having it, is like statistically calling
14:149 out of 10 women unsightly.
14:17Number 8.
14:17Lip plumping products.
14:19Update on my lip plumper.
14:20My lips definitely feel like they're burning.
14:22They look a little red and they're still tingling.
14:25Ever since Kylie Jenner debuted her new voluptuous lips, the world has been going nuts for
14:30lip plumping products.
14:32I'm just obsessed with lip liners and lipsticks in general, and I can't leave the house without
14:36them.
14:36I just decided to take matters into my own hands.
14:39Since Kylie's lip kits can be tough to get your hands on, people have been trying other
14:43ways to get a full pillowy pout.
14:45The issue with these products is that to achieve their goal, they use ingredients that intentionally
14:50irritate your lips.
14:51And while they may show a temporary result, it won't last long enough to make any real impact
14:56on your look.
14:57I think you guys can tell that my lips look like they did before I applied this stuff.
15:04So essentially in two hours, my lips deflated.
15:07Some products have been called downright painful.
15:10Save your money and try a natural approach instead by applying a small amount of peppermint
15:14oil to your lips, which still irritates, but delivers more of a cooling sensation.
15:19Number 7.
15:19Detox masks.
15:20It's not bad, but it's not, like, amazing feeling.
15:25It's already starting to dry in some areas.
15:28The problem with detox masks isn't that they're ineffective, it's that they're so darn expensive.
15:33Glamglow's popular Super Mud Mask, which took off on Instagram, will set you back $70
15:38for less than 2 ounces of product.
15:40Apply a layer of this goodness all over la face.
15:43Work it in in a timely manner because it does dry pretty quick.
15:47This has a minty smell that kind of stings your nose when first exposed, but it's fresh.
15:52The good news is it's really easy to recreate detox masks at home with ingredients that you
15:57already have in your house.
15:58By mixing things like avocado, organic honey, apple cider vinegar, or even used coffee grounds,
16:04you can achieve the same purifying effect.
16:06I have this avocado mask on that I make myself in my kitchen, and it's super fun to make and
16:13super easy.
16:13If you want to get really serious, invest in some activated charcoal tablets to try to
16:17recreate your favorite pricey mask at home.
16:20Number 6.
16:20Stretch Mark Oils
16:21There's literally no guaranteed way, there are a lot of products on the market that are
16:25out there, but there's no guaranteed way to completely say, 100% you will not develop
16:30stretch marks.
16:31Slathering on an oil can feel proactive, especially during pregnancy, but the evidence is a lot less
16:36comforting than the ritual.
16:38The American Academy of Dermatology describes stretch marks as scarring that doesn't fully
16:42disappear, though treatment can reduce how noticeable it looks.
16:46In studies, almond oil, cocoa butter, olive oil, and vitamin E fail to fade existing marks
16:51or prevent new ones.
16:52A few different ingredients here.
16:53First off, we're going to be using some mango butter and cocoa butter because those are very
16:57moisturizing, have wonderful benefits for the skin.
17:00I also have some olive oil and some coconut oil, and then I have a few essential oils here
17:05that we're going to be adding in that can really help with producing collagen.
17:09A Cochrane review likewise found no high-quality evidence that topical preparations prevent pregnancy
17:15stretch marks.
17:16Oils can still make skin feel pampered, but as stretch mark insurance, that glossy bottle
17:21is overselling itself.
17:22There are only really two ingredients that have been shown to improve the appearance of stretch
17:26marks, and they are tretinoin and hyaluronic acid.
17:30Number five, bargain red light masks.
17:33You've done so much for me, and I'm so grateful for that.
17:38That futuristic glow can make a cheap gadget look impressively clinical.
17:42Red light therapy itself has promising evidence.
17:45However, the American Academy of Dermatology says studies use different devices and treatment
17:49times, making their results difficult to compare.
17:52A 2026 analysis also found that prices varied depending on who was recommending the devices,
17:57with non-credentialed accounts promoting cheaper options on average.
18:01It's a bit expensive.
18:02It's $1,500 for this, so it's kind of a big buy.
18:06But I did this for a while.
18:07It has both red and blue light, and red is for collagen production and healing skin health.
18:13It also stressed that effectiveness depends heavily on factors like wavelength, power, and
18:18treatment dose.
18:19Even FDA clearance isn't an effectiveness stamp.
18:22It means the device was cleared based on substantial equivalence to a legally marketed device.
18:27If you're bargain hunting, impressive claims deserve a closer look.
18:30If you're considering the expensive thing versus the budget one, think to yourself,
18:34am I someone who travels and I have minor areas that I'm looking to treat, or am I just
18:38trying to get those benefits all over?
18:40Number four, overnight lip masks.
18:42A lip mask compared to a traditional lip balm is usually a lot thicker in consistency.
18:47They tend to contain a lot of ingredients like butters and oils and also antioxidants.
18:53Calling it a sleeping mask makes bedtime lip balms sound like a tiny spa appointment.
18:57The Cleveland Clinic explains that lip balms mainly seal in existing moisture rather than
19:01adding it.
19:02Its medical site also says lip ointment at night can keep lips hydrated overnight.
19:06I would actually put Aquaphor's regular product, the regular Aquaphor healing ointment,
19:13as a top option for the lips.
19:15Now, it does have lanolin in it, but I truly believe that Aquaphor is one of the most moisturizing
19:20products available on the market.
19:22Ohio State dermatologist Susan Massick recommends plain petroleum jelly as an affordable option
19:27that works across skin types.
19:29So, yes, a thick nighttime treatment can absolutely help dry chapped lips feel more comfortable
19:33by morning.
19:34However, a special mask isn't necessarily doing something a basic occlusive balm can't.
19:48Number 3.
19:49High End Mascara
19:50I was fully prepared to say that this is my favorite mascara of all time, the best one
19:54I've ever tried, and while that still might be true, I am flabbergasted at how well the
20:01$5 Essence Mascara kept up to this $70 Louboutin Mascara.
20:05While we totally support going high-end for certain makeup products like foundations,
20:10other essentials, regardless of brand, often have similar formulas at all price points.
20:14The most glaring example of this is mascara.
20:17You can get the same lengthening and volumizing results with a drugstore version as you can
20:21with a product that costs three times as much.
20:23In terms of the relationship between price and quality, it's very much a mixed bag.
20:27Drugstore has some really great options when it comes to mascaras from a cosmetic chemist's
20:32Also, the way mascara tubes are designed, they inevitably develop bacteria inside.
20:37Because you're putting the product so close to your eyes, you should be replacing your
20:41tube every three months.
20:42With a product that disposable, it's totally not worth making a serious investment.
20:47Mascaras are almost all made at the same manufacturer.
20:50Now, does that mean there can't be some variance in formulas?
20:53Sure.
20:53But what you're paying for when it comes to mascara is the brand name.
20:57Number 2.
20:57Very Expensive Cleansers
20:59If you are spending anything at all more than $20, $30 at the very, very most on your
21:08cleanser, you are doing it wrong or simply put, you are wasting your money.
21:14Luxury packaging can turn washing your face into a prestige purchase.
21:17But the basic assignment hasn't changed.
21:20The American Academy of Dermatology advises using a gentle, non-abrasive, alcohol-free
21:25cleanser.
21:25The Cleveland Clinic likewise says a gentle cleanser is best for most people.
21:29And that expensive skin care isn't automatically more effective.
21:33I've learned from my dermatologist that it really doesn't take all of those fancy, glamorous
21:37products or a DIY.
21:39It really just takes good ingredients that have been working all of their lives.
21:44I don't know how old salicylic acid is, but anyway.
21:46Dermatologist Shilpi Caterpall notes that price can reflect packaging, marketing, formulation,
21:51and active ingredient concentration, not necessarily better performance.
21:55I don't think I've ever tried a super expensive cleanser where I was just like,
21:59whoa, this is worth $100 or this is worth $60.
22:03Like, time and time again, I am blown away by $15, $20 cleansers.
22:07And that is more than enough.
22:09You do not need to spend your money here.
22:10If a splurge cleanser feels gorgeous, enjoy it.
22:13But when the product's main job is simply to cleanse without irritating skin, sky-high
22:18pricing starts to look less essential than indulgent.
22:21And frankly, it's not usually on your skin long enough to warrant that price tag.
22:25Even if it has beneficial ingredients, these are going to get washed down the drain.
22:28Why spend $90, $100, $110 on a cleanser that's just going to be rinsed down the drain?

23:02Number one, makeup wipes.
23:04They're undeniably handy after a long night, but convenience doesn't automatically equal
23:09a complete cleanse.
23:10Makeup wipes, first off, are very harsh on your skin, the ingredients.
23:13A lot of them have alcohol in them, which can dry your skin, irritate your skin.
23:17Even if they don't have alcohol, guess what?
23:19They have really strong preservatives.
23:21The American Academy of Dermatology recommends removing makeup before bed.
23:25Then, washing with a gentle cleanser, while also warning against scrubbing during removal.
23:30The Cleveland Clinic similarly treats wipes as one makeup removal option before cleansing,
23:35and suggests fragrance-free versions to reduce irritation risk.
23:38This is not something I recommend every day.
23:40Oh!
23:41Uh-oh.
23:41Makeup remover.
23:41She's coming after the makeup wipes, everybody.
23:44But I prefaced it.
23:45Not every day.
23:46They can still be lifesavers when the alternative is sleeping in a full face.
23:50But some disposable wipes also contain plastic, adding an environmental downside to something
23:55designed for single use.
23:56Think about how many makeup wipes you use to get rid of your makeup.
23:58You're creating that waste every single day, and that piles up over time.
24:02And a lot of times, makeup wipes both have cotton and plastic in them, which is not only
24:06bad for water usage, but also plastic waste every day.
24:08Useful in a pinch?
24:10Absolutely.
24:11Essential every night?
24:12Not really.
24:13Which beauty buy had everyone raving while you were wondering what all the fuss was about?
24:18Spill the tea and maybe save someone a trip to the beauty store in the comments.
24:21Let's pray.
