Digital image processing is so advanced these days that it would be easy to dismiss the above picture as simply having been Photo-shopped, but this is not the case.
According to spaceweather.com (as well as several Norwegian-language news sources which do this author little good!) ,sky-watchers throughout northern Norway spotted this amazing phenomenon in the heavens on the night of Dec 8-9, 2009.
No one knows for sure what it was, but here is the account from Nick Banbury, who witnessed the event from Harstad, Norway:
It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in color to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end.this spiral then got bigger and bigger until it turned into a huge halo in the sky with the green beam extending down to the earth. According to the press ( ... )
