In the pitch-black sky high above Kyiv, the rhythmic, lawnmower-like buzz of an incoming Iranian-designed Shahed drone suddenly pierces the air-raid sirens as it sweeps low toward its target.
Beams of blinding searchlights crisscross the darkness, locking onto the triangular delta-wing silhouette just as Ukrainian mobile air defense units open fire, sending bright streams of tracer rounds and anti-aircraft artillery into the night.
A second later, the defensive rounds strike home, detonating the drone’s high-explosive warhead while it is still fully airborne—triggering a sudden, blinding orange fireball and a shockwave that shatters the aircraft midflight, scattering harmless, burning carbon-fiber fragments into the night sky long before it can reach the city below.
