00:00This is Patrick with New Jersey's Outdoor Adventures YouTube channel. Today I'm up in Long Island, New York and I
00:05just met up with Eddie with Interstate Vans. He's a custom van builder from Massachusetts. He just finished up this
00:11Ford Transit van build for one of his clients and this thing is incredible. It's a Riva Yacht inspired interior
00:19and this van has everything. He's going to give us a full tour inside and out. So join us.
00:24Hi Patrick, thank you so much for having me on the channel. I'm really excited to be here. Like you
00:29said, we do custom vans out of Massachusetts. This is a customer build we just finished up. We got a
00:34Ford Transit. It's pretty much fully optioned. It's all wheel drive, dually. Their main goals with this thing was to
00:42have a stealth van, pretty inconspicuous, but also something, you know, with a pretty intense interior. The customer's favorite boat
00:49growing up was the Riva Aquarama. So the interior is inspired off a yacht.
00:53First way we met the objectives to keep things inconspicuous, right? One of his requirements was a full, you know,
01:00limousine window package basically. So it's got AMA half sliders, glass all the way around, right? Half slider again back
01:07here on both sides, right?
01:10Up top we got the Orion roof rack. So that's a full walkable deck, right? It has integrated lights, side
01:17and rear, as well as a 50 inch light bar from Diode Dynamics up top and also 600 watts of
01:23walkable solar as well.
01:24Coming around the back, once again, as you can see, there's no penetrations in the side, right? Even the rear
01:30ladder, right, is a clamp on ladder kind of work van style, right? The only thing that really gives this
01:36thing away is the, you know, camper van style roof rack, but it'd be pretty easy for people to mistake
01:41it for a limo van, right?
01:43Down low, it's got custom step with a little hitch bar. In terms of suspension on this one, we didn't
01:50go crazy. It has sumo spring package front and rear, as well as helper springs in the rear to kind
01:56of pick up some of that weight.
01:57It's got about 11,000 gross vehicle weight rating, but we're still well under that, so didn't need the weight,
02:03right?
02:04We did do a little thing that most people wouldn't notice. It's the extended forward bump stops. That means you
02:09can swing the ladder all the way, or the door all the way around and still not have the ladder
02:14hit the window.
02:16Coming into the back here, give you a peek at the interior and start to run through some of the
02:22stuff back here.
02:23So, on this side, we got van-made gear window covers to keep things insulated. Up top, on both doors,
02:30we got a speaker system that's tied into the RV control system.
02:36Down low, it's our outdoor shower setup, so we have our water fill and then aquar quick connects and mixer.
02:44One AC outlet right here. This is an extendable vent, so you can pull this over the bed, direct it,
02:50as well as a tank light in here.
02:52Take a peek in the back. Got lots of his tools back here, but 50 gallons of fresh in the
02:58rear here.
02:59When he's filling up, he can throw that light on to see his water level really easy.
03:04We'll show you the systems from the inside, but more back here, we got lagoon table mount here.
03:10The benches, as you can see, it's flipped up now to sit from the front, but this can flip down
03:15and the other one can flip up,
03:16so you can hang out the rear with the table back here. This can lock up for a backrest when
03:22this bench is down and you're hanging out inside.
03:25On this side, we just got our standard 12-volt cigarette, USB, as well as 120 outlet, short power breaker,
03:32tank heaters for the two gray water tanks underneath.
03:36We have stainless steel, so this is front and rear trims, right, for the steps, welded stainless steel treads.
03:42Just a little air vent back here to allow some air movement.
03:46The rear section of the van is framed with 80-20, as you can see here, but the majority of
03:52the cabinet construction is what's called Garnica ply,
03:55so it's custom mahogany layup on a lightweight plywood core with solid mahogany trims.
04:02Around the rear and the front, we have these trims that are from Go Code Overland,
04:08so this just allows you to kind of trim out those tough metal edges a little easier with a nice
04:12clean finish.
04:14And factory backup camera, as well as an aftermarket one there.
04:19Built-in lights into the Orion rack, as you can see as well on the rear.
04:28One thing I did forget, yeah, so we don't have any, normally we'd have the shore power on the side
04:32here, right?
04:33On this one, since we didn't want any side penetrations, we actually have the shore power plug, which is a
04:37smart plug, tucked under here.
04:40So easy to access, but pretty much impossible to see when you're just looking at the van and walking by
04:45it.
04:45Up top on the front, one of the last things we got is that 50-inch diode dynamics light bar
04:50I mentioned.
04:51All of the exterior lighting is tied into the Ford factory upfitter switches.
04:57Now let's hop inside and show you guys what we got.
05:02Quickly show you on the side here our flip-down table.
05:06So like I mentioned, trims are all mahogany, right?
05:08So solid mahogany for all the hardwood trim and then lightweight plywood.
05:12Our flip-down outdoor table has got a support on drawer slides, pops down for your little wine table outside.
05:20Another location for our 12-volt cigarette and USB, as well as 120 volts.
05:25These are, this is a switch pad for the RV control system that I'll go into a little more detail
05:29on.
05:30And once again, stainless steel trims coming around the side of the van here.
05:35So we'll hop inside now.
05:40Now that we're inside, I'll give you a quick lay of the land.
05:43So up front, we got swivel seats so they can hang out and work.
05:47Full wet bath shower with a bulkhead up front.
05:50Split galley on the side with your sink and your cooking fridge.
05:54And then in the back, we have a convertible lounge setup with an elevator bed that comes up and down.
06:00And I'll hop up front, start going in a little more detail.
06:04So like I said, up here, we have a swivel table with a lagoon mount up front on the B
06:09pillar here.
06:10This table can stow in a sleeve that's over here behind the driver's seat for when they're driving and they
06:16don't want to use it.
06:18Up top, we have bulkheads.
06:20So this is actually a little different than we would normally do, right?
06:23Normally, you throw a factory headliner shelf up here, make it simple.
06:27One of the customer objectives on this one was to keep their factory visor shelf, right?
06:32Because their cameras fit pretty well up there, right?
06:35And then do a bulkhead.
06:36So this is about seven or eight inches deep, right?
06:39It's got a little bit of storage inside.
06:42And then all of our RV controls here.
06:45Going into a little more detail on the systems.
06:47This was one of the really important things for them, right?
06:50So they travel with their dog, right?
06:53And climate control was one of the things they said to me, it has to be perfect, right?
06:57We have to be able to monitor it when we're not near the van and we have to trust it
07:01to work, summer, winter, whatever.
07:03So in my mind, this is pretty much some of the best systems you can get, right?
07:09We have heat, which is a hydronic system from Van Life Tech.
07:14So what that does, right, is it's heating and coolant, right?
07:16That coolant is circulated through the floors.
07:19It also circulates through an air heat exchanger.
07:22So it's two-stage heat with the radiant heat from the floors and forced hot air.
07:26And it also does your domestic hot water, right?
07:29For the air conditioning, because, you know, like I mentioned on the outside, they really didn't want it to look
07:35like an RV.
07:35So we did not do a rooftop air conditioner.
07:38We actually have a split unit.
07:39So in the back is the main unit underneath the bench, and then there's a condenser underneath, right?
07:45And all that ties into this one thermostat.
07:48Cruiser Comfort works with Van Life Tech, and they integrate together, right?
07:51So basically, you set your temp.
07:53Heat and AC will come on when you need it.
07:55You can set your blower speed for the AC.
07:57And when you just want to call for hot water, you hit that button.
08:00Nice and simple.
08:03Next, below that, we got Fusion Garmin audio system, right?
08:07So like I mentioned in the back, we got speakers in the back doors.
08:10We also have speakers down underneath the bulkhead here.
08:14So, yeah, they can just Bluetooth into that if they're watching movies or just listening to music.
08:20The next thing we got, this is pretty cool.
08:23In a lot of vans, you know, you'll just do physical light switches.
08:26This is an RV control system.
08:28It's by a company called Artec Energy, right?
08:31And this allows you to integrate all of your controls into one system, right?
08:35So we have all of our lighting.
08:37We have our water tanks.
08:39Our electrical monitoring can really be endless.
08:42You can put as much as you want on there, right?
08:44So if you can see, right, I can flip all my lights on and off from here.
08:48You know, you can do water pump, like I said.
08:50We have an onboard compressor that's controlled from here.
08:53Tank levels, if I go in here.
08:56Yeah, that fan.
08:58It's pretty much endless.
08:59Below that, we got van-made gear partition to match the window covers.
09:04Sliding door window cover here and the rear ones, like I mentioned.
09:10A little bit more on the Artec and how that ties into the electrical system, right?
09:14So for the electrical, we have a 48-volt system.
09:18Two lithium-ionics, 165-amp-hour, 48-volt batteries for a total of about 17 kilowatt hours.
09:25That system ties in with the starting system, obviously.
09:29So we charge at about 150 amps at 12 volts or about, you know, 30 or 40 amps at 48
09:36volts, right?
09:37That system also has an auto start high idle.
09:41So when the batteries get below a set percentage, the system will start the engine and put it into a
09:48high idle so it can charge nice and quick, get you up a few percentage, and then it'll shut off.
09:52That was one of the things, you know, that was important for them, like I said, with the PET, right?
09:56If they're leaving for 8 or 10 hours, they don't want to have to worry that the batteries are going
10:00to get low.
10:00So as long as they have gas, they have power, right?
10:04A little more with the Artec, like I mentioned, right?
10:07A lot of people do like to have physical switches as well.
10:10So you can add these physical switch pads.
10:12We have one on the outside of the van here as well as one right here, right?
10:17So I can, you know, individually control certain circuits from there.
10:22Bed lift control is up here as well if you want to take a peek over here.
10:27And then we have all these kind of custom features that the customer picked out.
10:32So we have this engine turned aluminum, which is something that he sent over.
10:37He said figure out where you can work it into the van.
10:39So we found a few spots on the side door and some of the shelving.
10:43He picked out, you know, to match his marine theme, a custom clock and barometer set, solid brass,
10:49as well as some marine salt and pepper shakers that are just friction fit up here.
10:55We have all the solid mahogany trims throughout.
11:00And the matching upholstery for the ceiling that, you know, is what ties together the Riva Aquarama theme, right?
11:08So if you see that ceiling flows from the front to the back and it also matches underneath the bed
11:13as well.
11:15When he showed me the picture of the boat, just kind of cycling in and out on the computer here,
11:19right?
11:20You can see that the deck of the boat has solid mahogany that runs through the center.
11:24So that was another theme he picked, right, where that was just going to be the kind of centerpiece throughout
11:28the van.
11:29We picked out these marine lights right here.
11:32So these can go white or red, right, or just off, you know, depending on how you want to set
11:37things up.
11:38They're not the brightest, though, so we also have some LED lighting throughout.
11:42So for every lighting circuit, it's these lights as well as LED light strips as well.
11:48We jump into the shower next.
11:50You can see another nice marine latch.
11:53Give you a peek in here, and then I'll go through some of the things.
11:55He's got the marine porthole mirror.
11:58He's custom fixtures for the towel hooks and the toilet paper.
12:02Normally we don't, but this was an accessory made to tile the entire shower.
12:06So they picked out a nice glass tile.
12:08So there's a custom stainless shower pan down low.
12:11And then the glass tile throughout the walls with a nice composite deck.
12:16The deck splits down low so you're not standing in water, right, but if you need to clean it, you
12:20can quickly pull half of it out and unclog the drain.
12:23On the back over here, we have aqua fittings to match the rear.
12:28Quick connects with the mixer.
12:30Adjustable height shower bar.
12:32Light inside as well.
12:34And then we also have a nice pull-out shower bar.
12:38So as, you know, many people know, right, the van showers can be tight, right?
12:43That wall curves up on you, and if you just have a hard wall, it can be tough to move
12:47in there, especially if you have wider shoulders.
12:48So we picked out this extendable shower bar, right?
12:53So they can, you know, hook this up as a dressing room, right?
12:56Or they can just use it as a shower curtain, right, and just pull it out a little bit and
13:03keep the water inside, but give themselves, you know, that extra room to move around, right?
13:09Down low, to go over the lighting a little bit more, we have some toe kick lighting, right?
13:15If I turn off the toe kick, you'll see we also have the colored lighting down low, as well as
13:19up underneath here.
13:22There's two colored lighting circuits, right?
13:24They can do lighting in the back, in the cabinets, as well as up front.
13:29Yeah, so over here we have flip-up, same thing to match, right?
13:35We have the center mahogany strip with solid hickory counters.
13:40Down low we have, actually, so this is a factory lighting circuit, so you can turn this on and off,
13:46but it will come on and off with the door when it opens, which is nice, right?
13:50So you don't have to hit the interior lights when you're coming in, right?
13:53All right, go ahead and open this up, show a nice deep sink.
14:00See, we have the backsplash that kind of wraps around behind the sink, nice pull-down faucet.
14:05This is actually a two-in-one faucet, right?
14:08So if you flip it all the way down, it does the filtered water, right?
14:11So you don't have to have two separate faucets for that.
14:13Now underneath the sink, let me show you what we got.
14:16For the filtration unit, we also have our stove hiding down here.
14:19So we have Guzzle H2O unit, right, which does UV filtration as well as sediment filtration.
14:26We have a nice smell trap for the sink.
14:28Like I mentioned, underneath the van, right, we have heated gray water tanks.
14:32That's 12 gallons on the fresh water as well as 22 gallons on the shower, so they're separated, right?
14:39Duction stovetop has a sleeve, like I said, so you can pull that out and put it away when you
14:43need it.
14:44To show a little bit, the woodwork, right, so we have, like I mentioned, hickory butcher block counter,
14:49but with this custom stained mahogany trim and center strip, as well as on the door,
14:55we did this herringbone pattern that kind of points an arrow right at the door handle.
15:00Come over to more of the kitchen unit right here, so we got pull-out pantry right here.
15:08We have isotherm Dror 130 stainless model right here.
15:16This side, we have their kind of, you know, electronic stack as well as cooking.
15:21So we have a microwave over here and all of their charging stations.
15:24We have, obviously, outlets throughout, pass-throughs for all their cables, right?
15:29Another feature of the Garmin system, right, it's configurable,
15:32so one of the things you can add on is a second display, right?
15:36So we have the fixed display up front, but I also have this tablet, right?
15:41So I can access all the RV controls on here as well, right?
15:46What the system is, essentially, is it's just an app within a Garmin tablet, right?
15:50So you can take this up front.
15:52It's your GPS unit, right, with your RV data, so you don't hit any bridges or anything like that.
15:57Control your music through here, and then you just open the RV controls app,
16:01and it has all that, you know, the lights and everything on there.
16:04So you can take this to bed if you want.
16:06Control the lights from there.
16:08We have our Marine Paneltronics breaker panels.
16:11This has all of our 120 circuits as well as our 12-volt circuits up there.
16:19Coming down low on this side, we have their microwave oven.
16:24So both of these are from Breville, sorry.
16:27So, excuse me, this is a microwave, and then this is actually just a toaster convection oven, right?
16:32Two drawers down low.
16:35This one is on heavy-duty slides and has a lid that you can throw on here to use it
16:40as a step for the bed.
16:41We have dovetail joinery for all the drawers.
16:47Just another drawer down low.
16:50So the Marine stainless slam latches on all the cabinets.
16:56On the floor, we actually have a lawn seal material.
17:00So the Van Life Tech floor, one of the unique things about it is it keeps the heat really close
17:04to the surface,
17:05and in my mind, works better than a lot of the other Radian options.
17:09And the lawn seal floor just helps with that because it's a nice, durable, thin material.
17:13Let's that heat pass through.
17:16Up top here, we've got a little upper cabinet just with some extra storage.
17:20It's got a nice motion light inside.
17:22They have more of these Marine hooks that let them hang things.
17:25They can run a clothesline back and forth for drying things, like you see right here.
17:30These are all, you know, custom features the customers add, right?
17:33They have little hooks throughout.
17:36These are all things, you know, that we dial in, right?
17:38So they get their van, and they say, hey, maybe we want to throw a thing or two here, right?
17:42Come back for a quick visit, and we keep working on things to get it just how they need it,
17:47right?
17:48Like I mentioned, right, all the plywood is lightweight, and one of the key features, right,
17:52was this kind of curved center section, right, that kind of allows the space of the van to flow back,
17:59right?
18:00So we have the matching curves on the rear bulkheads.
18:03Coming right here down low, we have a big storage compartment down here, right?
18:09It keeps things like his shore plug and just other miscellaneous items as well.
18:19Coming back and down low here, on both sides, we have these temperature control fans, right?
18:25So this allows you to, you know, keep the internals at the temperature you need.
18:29This side is the heat, and on this side is the electronics.
18:33We have two more Lagoon mounts with this custom Marine table right here.
18:38So they have two tables and four Lagoon mounts, like I've reviewed.
18:42So really, they can kind of configure things however they need for however they're using the space.
18:48On this side, I'll give you a quick peek inside the bench here, the electrical system.
18:55Got some colored lighting in here just for fun, and you can also flip that to white in case you're
18:59working on things.
19:01Like I said, big lithionic system.
19:03We got all of our main distribution breakers right here.
19:06Two big chargers over there, and then all the Garmin setup with all the lighting wiring coming in the back
19:14there.
19:15That 3,000 watt Victron inverter as well.
19:18On the windows here, so this is one of the tricky things.
19:22When you have a factory window like this, it can be a little hard to finish out to that area,
19:28right?
19:28So one of the things he wanted, right, is curved surfaces to match, you know, that Marine transition that we
19:34have throughout.
19:34So we have these veneered curved window frames with the solid mahogany face frames.
19:41We are waiting on some custom window covers for here because you can't get the factory one.
19:46So just taking a little bit of time, but those will be coming soon.
19:49Same thing back here, hickory counters with the solid mahogany trim.
19:55Up top, if you look, right, you can see the ceiling that runs throughout the whole van also matches underneath,
20:01and everything is lined up, right?
20:03We have the same marine lights that you can flip from red to white.
20:09And then we also have extra LED lighting just to brighten things up that you can control from there.
20:15The center section here, we have a nice big drawer right here.
20:24AC outlet over here.
20:26So there's one in the back that you can extend and points up high to blow that air to the
20:31top of the van, and then also one down here to direct air at their, you know, dog, right?
20:36So one of the things that's nice about these split units, right, is that you don't have air just coming
20:42out at the top of the van.
20:43You can really choose where you want to have that airflow, right?
20:46And one of the things also is the output's just higher.
20:49So when you have a dog, right, you don't want it just cool at the top of the van.
20:53You want to make sure it's cooled down low.
20:54And a lot of the times it's hard for an AC unit to keep up in super hot temperatures.
20:59But if you're blowing that air locally, it, you know, definitely helps.
21:01All right, let me spin the table forward, give a quick peek underneath, just at some of the systems.
21:14This side of the bench can flip up, right, and you could hang out facing the back, right?
21:20Right now we kind of have it in the front lounge mode, which it is most of the time, or
21:24you flip it flat, right?
21:25You could pull these cushions up, and we actually have matching flooring to the floor, you know, to the main
21:30floor here, right?
21:31So if you wanted to throw gear in here, you could.
21:34On the cushions here, we have a ballistic nylon.
21:38So they have a German Shepherd, right?
21:40He's got sharp claws, and he likes to look out the window.
21:42So this material holds up great to him and also doesn't hold hair.
21:47So it's super easy to clean.
21:50Matching cushions, custom for the Aquarama theme.
21:54Coming on this side over here.
21:59Give you guys a peek into the heating side of things.
22:03So like I said, this is the Van Life Tech Hydronic System.
22:06So any of the white lines you see are circulating that hot coolant.
22:10And then any of the clear lines, opener style plumbing, for all of the water.
22:17In the back there, we have an ARB compressor.
22:21There's air chucks on both sides of the van, so they can, you know, quickly deflate and inflate their tires
22:26if they need.
22:27Use any air tools, anything like that.
22:34Why don't I come up front, and I'm going to lower the bed to give you guys a peek up
22:39top.
22:42Above the bed, we have a big skylight.
22:45So they can actually access the roof from outside or inside.
22:49They're photographers, right?
22:51So in retirement, they started a photography company where they do marine as well as, you know, aviation photography.
22:59Right, and now a little bit of van photography as well.
23:03So yeah, they wanted to be able to either look out the windows, take a quick picture, or climb up
23:07top and take a picture.
23:10This was one thing he actually designed.
23:12So he has their own logo.
23:14So we have a mix of laser engravings for our logo as well as theirs throughout the whole van.
23:20Custom covers, same thing, like I mentioned, we have marine lights running down as well as the matching LED lights
23:26as well.
23:29Underneath the bed, this is one thing I think I've seen a few people do, but not everyone.
23:33We got this kind of custom dry layer, right?
23:35So that allows airflow underneath the mattress.
23:41And yeah, like I said, you can see the speakers in the back.
23:45These are, they're window covers for the front, right?
23:47So van-made gear can do everything except for the custom window covers for the curved frame.
23:52So those are for the cab and for the skylight as well.
23:56Give this a quick push up for you.
24:01I don't want to let too much cold in, but yeah, you can see that flips all the way open
24:05so that they can climb up while the bed's up.
24:10Eddie, this is an awesome van.
24:13I'm blown away.
24:14I mean, we spent about an hour and a half talking about this thing before we did the video because
24:19there's so much detail in it.
24:21I like the fact that it's somewhat stealth looking on the outside.
24:26You know, living out in Long Island and visiting some of the city areas is very hard with a camper
24:32van.
24:32Now this is one of the bigger ones, so this is 22, 23 foot long, so it can be difficult
24:37to park in some spaces.
24:38But the advantage is it's stealth looking, it's all-wheel drive, there's no propane, it's hard traveling with a vehicle
24:46over some of these bridges and tunnels if you have propane.
24:50Don't have to worry about that.
24:51Don't have to worry about that, and you've got a big lithium battery system and the boat, I'd say like
24:57the boat yacht style interior.
24:59This is awesome.
25:00It is incredible.
25:02So this customer came to you with the van?
25:05They came to us with the van and the ideas, right?
25:08So I have customers that come, right, and they know roughly what they want, but they're really looking for kind
25:14of a lot of guidance on how to achieve that, right?
25:16And I've worked with plenty of customers that come with, you know, designs really sometimes down to the eighth inch
25:22and an image of exactly how they want it either way is totally fine, right?
25:27I think more than some builders, right, we're willing to work with people on that really custom level, right, get
25:33to know them.
25:33And I want people to have a vehicle that they're proud of, right?
25:37And I think with this one, we achieve that, right?
25:39Every time they get in there, get in here, they tell me how much they love it, how much it
25:43feels like theirs and something that they were involved in building, right?
25:46So that's the goal.
25:47We want it to be something that lasts a long time.
25:49We want you to do it once, not have to buy something, realize what you do and don't want, sell
25:54it, do it again.
25:56A lot of good systems in here, too.
25:58There's a lot of thought in the actual infrastructure before you even started building the van.
26:02Yeah.
26:03And you build a handful of custom vans a year?
26:06Yeah.
26:07Doing between six and ten has varied, depends on, you know, the level of the project, right?
26:11This one was more involved, probably over a thousand hours into this one.
26:15And walk us through the process.
26:17So you have a website, customers find you, they consult with you, I guess, for what they want, and then
26:24production starts.
26:25How long does something like this take to make?
26:27This was on the longer side, right?
26:29I would say average, you know, three to five months.
26:32I think we have this one seven months, seven or eight months.
26:35So it's a lot of time.
26:36But what you're doing in seven months is unbelievable.
26:38I mean, look at all the detail and all the woodwork, the stitching in the headliner.
26:45I mean, this is unbelievable.
26:48I love it.
26:49I love everything about it.

27:13What are their travel plans?
27:15What are they going to be doing?
27:16I know this is based around their dog, right?
27:18Comfort for their dog.
27:20But they're just going to hit the country and do photography.
27:23Photography.
27:24They're touring, right?
27:25So he's mentioned to me many times, right?
27:27They're not off-roading, right?
27:29So that's why we didn't go crazy with a lifted van, crazy suspension, right?
27:33Mild dirt road travel, but mainly on the highway, right?
27:37One thing I didn't mention is his internet system, right?
27:40He's got the TravelFi set up.
27:41So it's a modem-based internet system.
27:44So really anywhere where you have a cell signal, you have Wi-Fi in the van, right?
27:48That's great.
27:49For a reasonable price.
27:50Yeah, and I think they're doing weekend trips and then, you know, maybe a month or two trip.
27:55They got to get their feet wet first, right?
27:57And do their shakedown before they hit the road.
