00:06Welcome to MojoPlays and today we're throwing some characters of the
00:09gold Nintendo age at you that you might have missed. These are the 20 hardest
00:13characters to unlock in N64 games. Let's go! Before we continue, we publish
00:18content all week long so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get
00:22notified of our latest videos. Celebi Pokemon Stadium 2. Celebi in Pokemon
00:35Stadium 2 is not hidden behind one bizarre trick but getting access to it
00:38still takes some serious commitment. You first need to clear round one which
00:42means working through a huge portion of the game's tournaments and gym leader
00:45castle before eventually defeating the rival. Only after that does round two
00:49open up allowing Celebi to be rented in the Prime Cup. By then you've already
00:53proven you can handle some pretty demanding battles using rental Pokemon
00:56that are not always equipped with the moves you would actually choose
00:59yourself. So Celebi basically shows up as a reward for surviving the first half of
01:04the game, right before Pokemon Stadium 2 decides to become even nastier.
01:14Dr. Nepenthe Forsaken 64
01:23Forsaken 64 handles secret characters in a very old-school way. It hides them in battle
01:28mode and barely bothers explaining any of it. Dr. Nepenthe is one of the eight extra bikers
01:33scattered across specific multiplayer arenas and unlocking him simply requires finding and
01:38killing him during a match. Easy enough, assuming you somehow know which map he's
01:42on in the first place. While you search the battle continues normally so other
01:45players and enemies can make that hunt even messier. There's no grand puzzle or
01:49brutal championship attached to this one, just obscure knowledge and careful
01:53exploration. It's the kind of secret that probably caused plenty of players to
01:56unlock him completely by accident. Wolverine Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. Wolverine being playable
02:10in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 already sounds ridiculous, but unlocking him makes the cameo
02:15even stranger. You need to complete every career goal and earn gold in all three competitions
02:19with two different skaters. In other words, the game wants something very close to two full
02:23completion runs before Logan finally decides skateboarding is worth his time.
02:27That means repeating difficult objectives, nailing competition scores, and avoiding sloppy
02:32runs across the entire career. Plenty of players never bothered pushing that far, which helps explain
02:37why the secret was so easy to miss. Once unlocked, Wolverine gets unique animations
02:41and moves, which is very cool. Alex, Harry, Nina and Kate, Mario Tennis 64.
02:57Unlocking Alex, Nina, Harry and Kate in Mario Tennis is less about skill and more about owning a tiny museum
03:03of Nintendo hardware. All four come from the Game Boy Color version of the game, so bringing them into the
03:08N64
03:09game requires both cartridges, a transfer pack, and a compatible controller setup. Once connected,
03:15you can import the characters along with the stats you built up in the handheld game.
03:18That was already a bit of a process when everything was sitting on store shelves. In 2026,
03:22it means hunting down old cartridges and accessories that may cost more than expected.
03:27No brutal tournament is required here. Your greatest opponent is simply finding 25-year-old
03:32hardware that still works. I'm 32 and I barely work.
03:41Pojo Mace the Dark Age
03:48Pojo in Mace the Dark Age is one of these characters that sounds completely made up until you actually
03:53unlock him and realize, wait, that's real? First, you have to perform Tarya's execution during the
03:58single-player game. Then things get properly weird. Plug in a second controller, head back to the
04:02character select screen, highlight Tarya, hold start and choose her again. Do everything correctly,
04:08and she's replaced by Pojo, an extremely angry chicken. None of this is especially hard once
04:13you know the trick, but the game gives you basically no reason to even try it. Without a magazine,
04:19a cheatbook or a schoolyard rumor, Pojo should basically have never been found.
04:31Sumner Gauntlet Legends
04:38Gauntlet Legends has the character Sumner, and he is unlocked through a challenge that feels
04:43completely disconnected from the rest of the game. Instead of killing hordes of monsters, you need to
04:48find a hidden room in Battleworld and complete a timed coin collecting challenge. Once inside,
04:53the goal is simple. Grab 50 coins before the clock runs out, which is easy, right? The tricky
04:58part is actually discovering the secret area in the first place, then moving efficiently enough to
05:03scoop everything up without wasting precious seconds. Fail and you get to repeat the whole
05:06frantic treasure hunt again. It's not the hardest unlock in the game, but it is really,
05:10really strange. And that's enough for this list.
05:23Meet Mortal Kombat 4
05:28Unlocking Meet in Mortal Kombat 4 is less a test of fighting skill and more a test of how long
05:33your
05:33friend is willing to humor you. With two players, one person selects the group option and must keep
05:38winning matches, returning to the character select and choosing group again each time. Do this until
05:43you've stacked up 16 victories and the next fighter you pick appears as Meet, a skinless human body
05:49with all the charm of a medical textbook. There's no brutal boss or hidden fatality or impossible combo
05:55involved to unlock this character. It's just repetitive, oddly specific and slightly embarrassing.
06:00Somewhere around Win 12, you may start wondering why becoming exposed muscle tissue matters this much.
06:05And if you're my brother, you'll probably ruin it for me.
06:09Scorpion wins. Flawless victory.
06:13Bret Hart WCW Backstage Assault
06:20Bret Hart is not hidden behind some impossible match in WCW Backstage Assault. Instead,
06:26the game makes you prove your commitment by clearing the hardcore gauntlet five separate times.
06:31That means repeatedly smashing through backstage areas full of tables, televisions and anything else
06:36sturdy enough to become a wrestling weapon. Plenty of other characters unlock after a single victory
06:40or one successful gauntlet run, but Bret apparently demands a subscription plan. The difficulty isn't
06:46from one brutal challenge, it's from doing the same mode over and over and over without losing your
06:50goddamn mind. Finish it four times and the game still shrugs. Only after the fifth does this hitman
06:55finally decide you've suffered enough.
07:01Shawn Michaels, WWF WrestleMania 2000
07:12Shawn Michaels in WWF is locked behind an entire wrestling season. You need to work through road to
07:19WrestleMania, survive months of matches and eventually reach WrestleMania itself as WWF
07:24Champion. Win the title and HBK finally appears, immediately turning your victory celebration
07:31into another fight. Beat him there and Michaels becomes playable. None of this demands impossible
07:35inputs, but it does ask for a long successful run. If your season goes sideways, so does the unlock.
07:45Joker Fighters Destiny
07:46Welcome to another Endurance Trophy. To unlock Joker in Fighters Destiny, you need to survive 100
07:57opponents in survival mode. The problem is obvious, 100 fights is a very long time to stay sharp,
08:04especially when a single bad stretch can wreck the entire run. Early opponents might feel manageable,
08:09but by the time you're deep into the 70s or the 90s, every mistake suddenly carries enormous weight.
08:15There's no shortcut or clever puzzle here, just consistency and nerves. Old guides even
08:21single-joker out as the toughest hidden fighter to earn. By opponent 100, you've probably forgotten
08:25what sunlight looks like. Why the Alien Vigilante 8
08:43Getting why in Vigilante 8 sends you through a ridiculous chain of unlocks before the Alien
08:48finally appears. First, you need to access the Sand Factory and Secret Base stages. Sand Factory requires
08:54clearing quest mode with Dave and Molo, while Secret Base needs Convoy and Sidburn. The problem
08:59is that none of those four characters are available from the beginning, so you have to complete additional
09:03quest mode runs with different members of the starting roster just to unlock them so that you can
09:07eventually unlock Y. It's a bunch of unlocking. One secret unlock leads into another until you've played
09:12the campaign repeatedly and by the time Y finally becomes selectable, you're going to want to leave
09:18the planet anyway.
09:24Vampire Wario Dr. Mario 64
09:33One loss is all it takes to ruin your shot at Vampire Wario in Dr. Mario 64.
09:38Let me explain. You have to finish story mode on normal difficulty or player while using Dr. Mario
09:45and every single match needs to be won without a single defeat. That turns what sounds like a basic
09:50campaign clear into a full one where mistakes actually matter. Early stages may go smoothly but
09:55later opponents speed things up and leave far less room for a messy capsule placement. There's no
10:01recovering with a continue and carrying on. If the board collapses, so does the unlock attempt. It is a
10:06short challenge compared with some others but the pressure builds fast when one bad move can erase
10:11everything you've been working for.
10:18Ness Super Smash Bros.
10:25Three lives, no continues, normal difficulty or higher. Those are the rules Super Smash Bros. gives you
10:31before Ness will even consider becoming a part of your team. You have to clear the entire one player
10:36mode under those conditions which was a big big ask in 1999 when everyone was still figuring out
10:41how this strange new fighting game even worked. Lose too many lives or use a continue and the opportunity
10:46disappears. Even reaching Master Hand with enough stock left can become stressful if early fights go
10:52badly. Then after the credits Ness finally appears as a challenger and you still have to beat him. The game
10:57basically checks your homework twice before handing over the psychic child.
11:06Platinum Rumao Flying Dragon
11:12Ten platinum medals stand between you and the full set of platinum fighters in Flying Dragon and getting
11:18them is a proper grind. In Estee Heer You mode, special platinum opponents can appear during the circuit
11:24and beating one earns a medal. The catch is that you need all 10, so this means repeatedly pushing
11:28through the mode, waiting for the right challengers to show up there, making sure you actually beat them
11:32when they do. Ryumao's platinum form is tied to that larger collection rather than one dramatic boss
11:37fight. Flying Dragon already has gold variants, secret tournaments and random rewards laid on top,
11:42so the whole thing becomes a maze of unlock systems. This cartridge really wanted to become your weekend
11:47plans.
11:55Rumble Man Ready to Rumble Boxing Round 2
12:0711 arcade mode clears is the sort of requirement that makes you question
12:11whether the developers of Ready to Rumble Boxing actually wanted people to see every character.
12:15The N64 version hands out secret fighters gradually. Freak E. Deke arrives after 1 clear, Michael Jackson
12:22up to 2, Shaquille O'Neal up to 5 and so on. Rumble Man sits at the very end of
12:26that progression,
12:27with guides placing him after the 11th completion, including the necessary hard run. None of these
12:33playthroughs are impossible on their own, but repeating the same mode that many times turns the unlock
12:37into pure stubbornness. After getting MJ, what's the point of getting the rest? That's as funny as it gets.
12:423, 4, 5. Cherry Fighter Destiny 2
12:53Cherry in Fighter Destiny 2 basically inherits one of the first game's nastiest ideas. Before the real
12:59challenge even starts, you need to clear verse com with Pierre. After that, survival mode demands 100
13:04victories in a single run. There's no checkpoint halfway through, no mercy at round 99, and no shortcut
13:09once your concentration starts slipping. The difficulty comes from maintaining clean play
13:14for an absurdly long stretch while every mistake becomes more expensive, the deeper you go.
13:20Fighter Destiny 2 adds a few new systems, but the core problems remain the same.
13:24Keep winning until the number hits triple digits. Help, me god.
13:34Mew Pokémon Stadium
13:42Round 2 in Pokémon Stadium only opens up after you've conquered a huge amount of the game, and Mew is
13:48waiting on the other side. You need to clear the stadium, Cups, fight your way through Gym Leader
13:53Castle, and then defeat Mew 2 in the final battle. Only after all of that does the second round become
13:58available where Mew can finally be used as a rental. That journey's tough enough with your own carefully
14:03trained Game Boy team, but using rental Pokémon can turn certain battles into a complete tactical
14:08headache thanks to some, let's say, questionable movesets. By the time Mew appears, you've basically
14:13finished Pokémon Stadium once already, so, like, who cares?
14:22Andre the Giant, WWF No Mercy
14:33Opponent 101, that is when Andre the Giant finally shows up in WWF No Mercy survival mode,
14:39after you've already endured 100 eliminations.
14:41You guys seen a theme on the N64? Why wasn't it called the N100? The big trick when you get
14:47to
14:47round 101 is that you have to be the person who throws him out. If another wrestler eliminates
14:52Andre first, the unlock disappears with him, and all that hard work leads nowhere. There is another
14:57route through the WWF Championship story, but survival is the one that really earns Andre his
15:02reputation. By the time he enters, your hands are tied, your focus is probably gone, and the game
15:07suddenly expects you to beat one of wrestling's most intimidating legends cleanly. It's the perfect
15:12final test from a game literally called No Mercy.
15:22Trixie Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
15:29Every gap in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 needs to be found before Trixie joins the roster,
15:34and that is much nastier than it sounds. The N64 version includes a huge collection of obscure
15:40transfers, giant jumps, and hidden routes spread across the entire game, including Skate Heaven.
15:46Reaching that stage already demands substantial career progress, so the hunt cannot even be finished
15:51early. From there, you're basically studying each level like an engineer, searching for bits of scenery
15:55that can somehow be connected with a trick. Plenty of gaps are things an ordinary player would never
16:00discover naturally. Eventually, every staircase, every rooftop, and every suspicious railing starts staring at you.
16:13TT, Diddy Kong Racing
16:2120 tracks stand between you and TT in Diddy Kong Racing, and everyone demands serious mastery.
16:27First, activate time trial and beat each course's target strongly enough to make TT's ghost appear.
16:33Then, you have to race that faster ghost and beat it too. Repeat the process across every standard track,
16:38including some absolutely miserable hovercraft events. There is no hiding behind adventure mode
16:44progress or slowly grinding towards the unlock. Your racing actually has to be excellent. Clean lines,
16:49smart boosts, and very few mistakes become mandatory once the harder times appear. By the end,
16:55you've spent hours chasing a clock around the entire game. TT eventually joins the roster, presumably because
17:01you've finally proven worthy of his ghostly goodness.
