00:01:28The top 10 we reverse on the grid in Formula 2.
00:01:31For those of you who are new to watching,
00:01:34we do have some penalties, like we mentioned as well.
00:01:37We'll get into those in just a sec.

00:01:45There is an additional one that has been added in

00:01:59so it is a sprint all the way to the line.

00:02:04alongside Oli Gertha.
00:02:05Bit of a delayed start,
00:02:07so more time to talk about those penalties

00:02:17John Bennett will be starting from pole.
00:02:18He will.
00:02:19And he'll have three extra minutes
00:02:21to bask in the Monza sunshine.
00:02:2432 degrees in the air, 56 on track.
00:02:27It's an incredibly hot weekend at the Temple of Speed.
00:02:30And it'll be 21 laps for the reverse grid sprint race.
00:02:35You're quite correct, Chris.
00:02:36There were plenty of penalties handed out.
00:02:38Seven after qualifying.
00:02:41Most of them focused on the moment right at the end.
00:02:45The final run where drivers were moving very, very slowly,
00:02:48as, to be honest, we've seen through multiple years
00:02:50here in Formula 2, all trying to get a tow.
00:02:53So Nikola Solov, Noel Leon, Mini, Boya, Montoya, Beganovic,
00:02:58and Miney all picked up three pace grid penalties.
00:03:02And this year in Formula 2, those are for both races.
00:03:06Or indeed, the stewards can give them out for both races
00:03:09and have chosen to do so.
00:03:11All meaning that John Bennett will start
00:03:14across from Oliver Gertha on the front row of the grid.
00:03:15Yeah, those penalties either for impeding one another,
00:03:19bringing down the speed too slowly,
00:03:22or driving erratically.
00:03:23I'll go through them as we go through the grid.
00:03:25Going off the back, Cushmine has taken a three-place penalty
00:03:28for failing to follow the race director's instructions.
00:03:31Kian Shields alongside him.
00:03:33Colton Herta, difficult day for him yesterday.
00:03:36He's going to be on row 10 with Dino Beganovic,
00:03:39who also has a three-place penalty for both races.
00:03:42Emerson Fittipaldi is on row 9, three-place penalty
00:03:45to Sebastian Montoya.
00:03:47And then we have Mari Boya, who, yes, also has a penalty.
00:03:51Laurence Van Hoopen will be alongside him.
00:03:53Gabriele Mini, the Italian, will go off row 7,
00:03:56has dropped three places on the grid for impeding.
00:03:59He's alongside Nico Verone.
00:04:01And then we have Rafael Villegomez
00:04:03alongside Roman Belinsky for Dam's Lucas Oil.

00:04:30We've seen him on the podium at Spa.

00:04:34Rotoma Miata was on the podium at Spa last season.
00:04:37And Oli Gertha looking to get his first Formula 2 win.

00:04:42who picked up his first win at the Red Bull Ring sprint race
00:04:45a little earlier this season.
00:04:47His team, Trident, no home wins for them in Italy.
00:04:51Can he change that today?
00:04:52After a great battle with Sebastián Montoya back in Austria.
00:04:57And we'll be looking to find his way to the top spot again
00:05:01as we look into the visor of Zinopol Intrapubazak.
00:05:04He starts on the second row of the grid.
00:05:06Martinius Stenshaw will be fifth on an all-road in third row.
00:05:12And a look over the grid then as they put tyres on
00:05:15and make their call for this sprint race.
00:05:18It'll be the soft tyre, I would have thought,
00:05:20for everyone on the grid.
00:05:21The super soft unlikely to make the distance here
00:05:24to the end of the race.
00:05:26More news from the panic though, Chris.
00:05:28There is a brand new Formula 2 car coming.
00:05:30Well, I say brand new.
00:05:31It'll be the same chassis,
00:05:32but a development Formula 2 car coming for 2027.
00:05:36Exactly that.
00:05:37It was displayed to all the people in the paddock today.
00:05:41Davide Valzecki leading the presentation,
00:05:44the 2012 GP2 Series Champion.
00:05:46We have some familiar faces,
00:05:48some champions in Leo Fornaroli.
00:05:51Oscar Piastri was there.
00:05:52Lando Norris also in there to have a look
00:05:54at what he could be racing in next year
00:05:57with his team, the LM4 Fusion team as well.
00:05:59So going down to have a little look at that.
00:06:02The LM4 Fusion team have submitted an application
00:06:04to race in Formula 2 for the next three season.
00:06:08Your thoughts on it, Alex?
00:06:10We've got some changes aerodynamically to the wings,
00:06:13front wings, rear wing changes,
00:06:15and an onboard starter introduced as well.
00:06:17Yeah, that I think doesn't sound like a huge thing,
00:06:20does it, an onboard starter?
00:06:21But I think it's going to be revolutionary
00:06:22in how the series is run,
00:06:25both operationally for the teams,
00:06:26shoveling the cars around.
00:06:27You've got to remember that they are often
00:06:31in a different paddock,
00:06:32or always in a different paddock from Formula 1,
00:06:34but sometimes it's relatively far away
00:06:37from the business end of the venues.
00:06:39But also, during the races,
00:06:43we see so many safety cars,
00:06:45virtual safety car stoppages
00:06:46for drivers who have lost the engine
00:06:48with this current era of car.
00:06:49So, if those drivers fire the car back up again
00:06:53and rejoin the race,
00:06:54I think we're going to see a lot less truncated
00:06:57Formula 2 racing.
00:06:58As you say, some aerodynamic developments,
00:07:02styling cues that give a nod,
00:07:04as in so many areas of Formula 2,
00:07:07towards the world of Formula 1.
00:07:09It maintains Mechachrome as the engine supplier
00:07:12with a 3.4-litre turbocharged unit.
00:07:15Pirelli still supply the tyres to the 18-inch rims,
00:07:19and they retain the chassis from this year,
00:07:22which is smart, I think.
00:07:23A cost-saving measure as they move from 2027 to 2029.
00:07:28So, those are the cycles of how the Formula 2 cars
00:07:32are homologated.
00:07:33And we're hearing it enhanced, closer racing as well.
00:07:36They want to go with the methods of what we're seeing in F1
00:07:39to allow drivers to race more closely
00:07:41and be able to follow a car ahead
00:07:43a little more closely as well.
00:07:45Looking down on the grid,
00:07:46and what is an incredibly long run
00:07:49to an incredibly big stop?
00:07:51Fair to say, one of the most,
00:07:53if not the most difficult first corner of the year,
00:07:56is here in Monza,
00:07:59with the very tight turn 1 and turn 2,
00:08:01the first chicane on the Rettofilo,
00:08:04being a huge challenge for the drivers
00:08:06to get through cleanly.
00:08:07A brief yellow flag up there by Rafa Kamara,
00:08:10but looks like he's got away OK.
00:08:11We have the red sidewall soft tyres,
00:08:14which we'll expect the drivers to run
00:08:15in this race throughout.
00:08:17However, they also have the purple sidewall
00:08:19super soft tyres, which they can use
00:08:22if they would like to a little bit later in the race.
00:08:26Well, you saw all the action from qualifying.
00:08:30Starting third in this reverse grid sprint race
00:08:33will be Rotomo Miata.
00:08:34Let's hear from him before we go
00:08:36to the top two on the grid.
00:08:40You know, Monza always happens through the race,
00:08:44even sprint.
00:08:45So just we need to, you know,
00:08:47stay patient and good race.
00:08:50The plan is to go for the win, of course.
00:08:53I'm starting P2,
00:08:54so I'm in probably one of the best positions
00:08:57you could start from in Monza.
00:09:02Yeah, just looking to get a good start.
00:09:05You know, it's still a long race
00:09:07and there's a lot of opportunities
00:09:08to overtake on this track.
00:09:10So just use the pace that I have,
00:09:12be calm, manage the tyres well
00:09:14and take my chances where I can.
00:09:17Sprint race pole is always nice
00:09:19and top 10 is always the goal.
00:09:21But I think we really could have been challenging
00:09:22for the top five.
00:09:24FP, we were quite strong.
00:09:25We just got a bit stuck with the red flags
00:09:27and traffic and other normal Monza things.
00:09:30But no, yeah, we're still satisfied
00:09:32with qualifying.
00:09:33We know there's a bit more pace in the car.
00:09:35And yeah, just looking forward to racing now.
00:09:38John Bennett feeling confident

00:09:45So a good start here is key, isn't it?
00:09:48This is one of the tracks
00:09:48where you can really be punished
00:09:50for a bad start to the race.
00:09:52465 metres down to the first braking zone.
00:09:55And if there is a reverse grid pole to take,
00:09:59I don't think you'd pick this one, would you?
00:10:00You've got 3DRS zones out there.
00:10:02You've got a lot of long straights.
00:10:03Towing is absolutely massive.
00:10:06Everything, as Retoma Miata says there,
00:10:08gets done on race day in Monza.
00:10:10It's a relatively basic circuit,
00:10:13but with hidden depths.
00:10:15And it's all about how brave you can be,
00:10:18particularly into those big braking zones
00:10:20wheel to wheel.
00:10:20There's a lot of space out there
00:10:22on the front straight as well.
00:10:24If you do get a bad start,
00:10:25you will be swallowed.
00:10:26So the clutch drop has extra pressure on it here.
00:10:2922 points between the top three
00:10:31in the championship.
00:10:32This round, 10 of 14.
00:10:34Solov in eighth place.
00:10:35Then we have 20 back to Gabriele Mini
00:10:37who's 14th on the grid.

00:10:49this for Solov.

00:10:59by way of damage limitation
