00:02:55but let me remind you what Spencer Bennett
00:02:58really did in this preseason game last year.
00:03:01Two preseason games,
00:03:02and he put on a show.
00:03:03I mean, throwing for over 300 yards,
00:03:05multiple touchdowns,
00:03:06had four or three touchdowns against the Chargers,
00:03:08including that game-winning drive
00:03:11with four seconds left on the clock.
00:03:13And so far, he has been money.
00:03:15He looked at Cashin' to try to solidify himself
00:03:16as QB number two.
00:03:18And a fine start,
00:03:19picking up a first down out near midfield.
00:03:21Brennan Presley,
00:03:22who's earned more and more trust
00:03:24now in his second summer with the Los Angeles Rams.
00:03:27This is a player the Rams offensive staff trusts,
00:03:29and what you're seeing is him get involved
00:03:31in the misdirection a little bit earlier
00:03:34with that sweep
00:03:35and the transportation schemes,
00:03:37as they like to call it,
00:03:38showing his speed out on either edge
00:03:40and really testing that space.
00:03:43That's such a great job there
00:03:44by the offensive play caller, Dave Rego.
00:03:48And now he finds the rookie,
00:03:50C.J. Daniels,
00:03:51who high points the football
00:03:52for a first down in Saints territory.
00:03:54It against Martin Emerson.
00:03:57And eventually they get to incompletes.

00:05:23so the allotted visits by prospects
00:05:24at their facility by the NFL.
00:05:26Instead, they send scouts on the road
00:05:28to go talk to these prospects
00:05:30and get them on the board in person,
00:05:32really spend the day with them
00:05:33and really get a feel for it.
00:05:35C.J. Daniels was one of those rare prospects
00:05:38that they did go do that with
00:05:40and really came away so impressed with him.

00:05:47He's had two great summers
00:05:48with the Los Angeles Rams,
00:05:50and he puts him in third down
00:05:51and manageable across midfield
00:05:53at the Saints' 47-yard line.

00:13:26If we're not going to play

00:14:06and then maybe talk
00:14:07about Coleman's impact,
00:14:09especially during
00:14:10these joint practices
00:14:11where it is true rules ball
00:14:12and trying to figure out
00:14:14and use your tools
00:14:14to go ahead
00:14:15and get some stuff done?
00:14:16Yeah,
00:14:16no doubt.
00:14:16He could probably spin it.
00:14:18He's beat that left hand
00:14:19up a little bit.
00:14:19You know,
00:14:19he doesn't wear the glove
00:14:20and he gets all bloody knuckled,
00:14:21but I bet he could still spin it.
00:14:23But yes,

00:14:23Coleman is the guy
00:14:24that leads the charge
00:14:25up front for those guys.
00:14:26He's such a great communicator
00:14:27and,
00:14:27you know,
00:14:28great blocker,
00:14:29great understanding
00:14:30of where he fits in
00:14:31and all the run
00:14:31and pass game schemes,
00:14:32which is huge for us.
00:14:33Takes a lot off
00:14:34of my plate
00:14:34and allows us to play
00:14:36at whatever tempo
00:14:36we want to play at.
00:14:37If we want to get up there
00:14:37and play fast,
00:14:38he can get those guys
00:14:39set early and often
00:14:40and does a great job
00:14:41communicating with the guys
00:14:43up front and myself
00:14:44to our running backs,
00:14:45everybody that's tied into it.
00:14:47So Coleman's a huge,
00:14:48huge part of what we do
00:14:49and why we're so successful
00:14:50in the run game
00:14:51and the pass game.
00:14:52And Matthew,
00:14:52having that continuity up front,
00:14:54I mean,
00:14:54those guys really strained
00:14:56for you last year.
00:14:57I know you've said it a lot.
00:14:59Them returning
00:15:00and having that rapport,
00:15:01understanding the verbal,
00:15:02yeah,
00:15:03but some of the non-verbal
00:15:04that you guys just have to know
00:15:05when you're out there.
00:15:06What has that been like?
00:15:07It's been great.
00:15:08Playing offensive line
00:15:09is those five
00:15:10got to be working as one
00:15:11and obviously it starts
00:15:12with communication,
00:15:13but the more reps
00:15:14you can get playing together,
00:15:15the better,
00:15:15and our guys have a bunch
00:15:16under their belt.
00:15:17So they played outstanding
00:15:18last year.
00:15:18We were great in the run game
00:15:19and in the pass game
00:15:20and they've kind of picked up
00:15:22where they left off last year,
00:15:23had a great camp
00:15:24and looking for more
00:15:25of the same this year.
00:15:26Just proud to be a part
00:15:27of those,
00:15:28a part of the team
00:15:29with those guys.
00:15:30They're a special group.

00:15:32this summer has been

00:15:50obviously Devontae,
00:15:50we had a bunch of reps
00:15:51during the season last year.
00:15:52There just wasn't
00:15:53a whole lot beforehand
00:15:54and Ferg the same way.
00:15:55So these reps
00:15:56are really valuable
00:15:57and understanding that,
00:15:59hey,
00:15:59if we miss one,
00:16:00let's talk about why
00:16:00or what it feels like,
00:16:01what it looks like
00:16:02and how we can change that
00:16:03and be a little bit better
00:16:04and both those guys
00:16:05are such dynamic,
00:16:06you know,
00:16:06physical players
00:16:07but also really smart guys
00:16:08to talk to
00:16:09and understand
00:16:09what we're trying to get done.
00:16:11So joy to work

00:43:25then he comes here as kind
00:43:26of a a wizard of pass rush

00:43:30and stuff like that and I
00:43:31think it's been showing up
00:43:32on Sunday great it's it's
00:43:34awesome that background too
00:43:36because when you are in the
00:43:37video department on the
00:43:38football side of the
00:43:39building you literally see
00:43:41every single cut up of
00:43:43every single snap around
00:43:45the league and you are
00:43:46packaging all of that
00:43:47together for the coaches
00:43:49so the massive arsenal of
00:43:51film that Drew Wilkins has
00:43:53seen has had to start
00:43:55informing some of his
00:43:56creativity as pass rush
00:43:57coordinator absolutely
00:43:58the third down chance for
00:44:00his defense this time on
00:44:01the plus side for New
00:44:02Orleans they need three gonna
00:44:04run for it contact in the
00:44:06backfield and the Rams shut
00:44:08it down great job there by

00:44:43a misdirection player coming

00:44:48they get a pass break up and
00:44:50take away on downs Lampkin over
00:44:52the shoulder of Austin and the
00:44:54Rams take over with a fourth
00:44:56down stop Lampkin's gonna be a
00:44:57name to watch because he just he
00:45:01he gives so much position
00:45:03flexibility of where where he's
00:45:05best at what can he do yeah

00:47:41like that on that drive he'll chat with
00:47:44rags as we step aside Rams looking to
00:47:46build on a 10-point lead before first down

00:47:55with Stetson Bennett he did not get as
00:47:57much of an opportunity last week in
00:47:59Kansas City but today playing the entire
00:48:01first half and he just took the Rams on a

00:48:07Rams I like that he settled down you know
00:48:10I'd like to see that as well on this drive
00:48:12for Stetson Bennett you know early on maybe

00:48:46not played much beside preseason football
00:48:48since yeah I got an opportunity to talk to
00:48:52coach rags this week and they kind of are
00:48:54treating him not not in the exact same way but
00:48:57kind of a similar path to tie because he doesn't
00:49:01have that game experience he's got preseason
00:49:03experience but regular season game experience he
00:49:06doesn't quite have it and so I think they're both
00:49:08kind of on the same path Stetson obviously with a little
00:49:11bit more experience the preseason

00:49:18from chatting with us to now calling plays and joining
00:49:21you on the podcast what a superstar that's a real
00:49:23ascent for him oh he's the man see what he's got for third

00:52:04looking at Devontae Adams even as it took a while for him and for Matthew
00:52:08Stafford to align last season he was drawing those important drive extending
00:52:13to see if he flies yeah it's an important part of the strategy of moving the ball
00:52:17down the field I know that you know it's not the most fun thing to watch every
00:52:21time but every little bit counts and man there is not there are not many
00:52:25smarter football players than Devontae Adams I mean if you have a chance to
00:52:29talk with or sit down or just really see an interview with Devontae you realize
00:52:33how much he plays the game within the game the little details of things like
00:52:38there's been so many highlights throughout training camp and he's running down the
00:52:42sideline and all of a sudden those hands come at the last possible second just at
00:52:46his waist catches the ball you know the defensive back doesn't even know that
00:52:49he's caught the ball because he he produces such late hands and he does such a
00:52:53great job with such those little details and then you go ahead and tack that on
00:52:57with the supreme talent that the Devontae Adams has you know it's it's just a
00:53:01match made in heaven right there if you're a quarterback keeper game early to the
00:53:05flat it's CJ who could not get away and they're gonna say he was down buying the
00:53:11clock inside the tent I could talk about Devontae Adams all day because when he
00:53:16first got to the Rams look at the play sets and Ben sees his man leads him CJ's
00:53:26trying to get those extra yards obviously you want to hold on to that through the
00:53:29down but that's those little details that the Rams always always always talk
00:53:35about you go down to the ground you come you come up with the ball don't let
00:53:38that thing pop out don't let somebody make a bad call or anything like that
00:53:41don't put him in that situation Dean Connors is in another red zone rip this one
00:53:46it's hot second down and six from Stetson Gary Nelson trailing in coverage

00:54:14football reminds me a lot of how Sean McVay talks about football drop that game

00:56:20much for being on with us today you know Ron I'm a big fan of watching how you
00:56:25teach these young running backs especially when you get these guys who so
00:56:28badly want to make an impact in the preseason what are some teaching points
00:56:33you've imparted to Dean Connors and Jarquez Alex Waters what are some of the
00:56:38things you've made sure those guys keep in mind in moments like this well that's a
00:56:42great question you know one of the things you want to always work for you or work
00:56:44on is just fundamentals and we want those guys that have the right
00:56:48fundamentals with those guys when I talk about having the right eyes that's in a
00:56:51pass in a run game and then I tell those guys to trust what they see and go play
00:56:56fast and we'll live with the results and there's certain things Ron it's clear you
00:57:01can't coach all of these guys they want to be physical we've seen some really nice
00:57:06pressure pickups earlier what is your message those guys when sticking their face in
00:57:11there and trying to help protect the quarterback when it called upon well let
00:57:14me let you know something here we don't put any run plays or pass plays into
00:57:19day one install the first thing we put in is protection and I tell the guys that
00:57:23we can't protect we can't play and so the guys have done a great job of just
00:57:28embracing that valuing the fact that we got to keep the quarterback clean and so
00:57:33those guys they've done a great job up until this point Jordan now he's got to get
00:57:37his hands inside I told him I said hey look God has blessed you with long arms
00:57:42you know and so you got to use it in a situation he did a great job of stepping
00:57:45up but the thing I want him to see is use his hands more in that one situation
00:57:49that he had hey coach Rob here thanks for coming on what's up Rob how we doing
00:57:54all right you guys I'm doing well I'm gonna tell you what that offensive line down
00:57:58they're blocking their tails off looking good but coach you you talked about the
00:58:01technique and the fundamentals and you're not installing on the first couple
00:58:04days because you're always talking about pass protection I was fortunate enough
00:58:08to be with you for a number of years and we mentioned this on the past broadcast
00:58:13where every single day those guys go ahead and get on Big Bertha can you talk
00:58:17about her oh yeah Big Bertha is beautiful you know I get to plump her up to like
00:58:21300 and something pounds and and the guys they know that they got to really
00:58:24embrace her to hit and be real physical because that's something that we see
00:58:29those big old linebackers coming down the stripe and so we say okay hey this is
00:58:34Bertha's those linebackers that are coming right down the stripe and so we got to get
00:58:38used to making sure that we're setting up in the chair we're taking the air out
00:58:41and we're fitting those things up so that's something that we we start out
00:58:44pre-practice doing so that's something that we're going to continue to do
00:58:49that's something I want these guys to understand we value pass protection and
00:58:53Ron we got a couple more for you on the other side of the two-minute warning stay with us

01:01:21that would normally be Xavier Smith's role we saw him with the big 40-yard return to set up a

01:01:26touchdown last week we hope that that means what it usually means for Sean McVay in the Los Angeles Rams

01:01:37how you can watch that young man play football and not feel inspired because a couple of tough moments
01:01:42that he went through at the end of last season and continuing to show up and make his own future
