People & Politics | 60 Years since East Germany was Founded

The German Democratic Republic was founded on October 7,1949. The self-styled 'socialist state of workers and farmers' was founded in the Soviet Zone of occupied Germany and the Soviet sector of occupied Berlin,and lasted 40 years. The oppressive system was brought down in the peaceful revolution of autumn 1989. Today,the successor party to East Germany's ruling Communist Party or Socialist Unity Party enjoys growing popularity,coupled with a one-sided view of the dimming memories of the past. Some believe that reunification brought them nothing but trouble.
