00:01Many would say, I believe in the Holy Spirit.
00:05But my question is, do you know the Holy Spirit?
00:10Do you know what He does, what He provides?
00:14He was there at creation.
00:17He came in power at Pentecost.
00:21He's the most personal and perhaps the most misunderstood member of the Trinity.
00:27The study of the Holy Spirit as revealed in Scripture shows He is more than a feeling,
00:34more than a force, more than an emotion, more than an experience.
00:41So, who is the Holy Spirit?
00:45The Holy Spirit is God with us, God in us, and God at work through us.
00:54Discover more about the Holy Spirit than you ever imagined
00:57and experience His presence and power as never before.
01:05Coming up on Turning Point.
01:07Christ has given us eternal life and hope,
01:10and we're to be the ambassadors of that to the whole world.
01:13And never has that been more important than it is now,
01:16because the world seems to be getting darker and darker,
01:19and the world gets darker, the light gets brighter,
01:21and we have the opportunity to represent our dear Savior in a world that rejects Him.

03:16And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
03:20When the Holy Spirit Controls Your Life.
03:24Somebody once asked comedian Jerry Seinfeld
03:27how to get better at telling jokes.
03:30His answer was pretty simple.
03:32The way to get better is to create better jokes,
03:34and the way to create better jokes is to write one every day.
03:38Then he explained how he does it.
03:39He buys a big wall calendar that has a whole year on one page.
03:43He hangs it on a wall that he sees every day,
03:46and then he gets a big red magic marker for each day.
03:49He does his task of writing,
03:51and he writes a great big red X over that day.
03:55After a few days, he said,
03:57you'll have a chain, so just keep at it,
03:59and the chain will grow longer every day.
04:01You'll like seeing that chain,
04:03especially when you get a few weeks under your belt.
04:06Your only job next is to not break the chain.
04:09Now, that's just a story on the power of consistency.
04:12Deep down in our hearts,
04:14all of us wish we could develop the habit of consistency,
04:19and do you know how popular it is?
04:22A book on habits is in the New York Times bestsellers list
04:26and has been for a while called Atomic Habits.
04:29Every time you look on that list,
04:31there's some kind of a book about habits
04:33because everybody's trying to figure out,
04:35how can I have better habits?
04:37How can I live a more consistent life?
04:39And you don't have to be a Christian to feel that way.
04:41You just are a person,
04:42and you have a few things in your life
04:44you'd like to do more consistently.
04:47And the same is true in the spiritual arena
04:49in our walk with the Lord.
04:51In his letter to the church at Colossae,
04:54Paul wrote what I believe is a powerful summary statement
04:57about what happens to us
04:59when the Holy Spirit takes control of our lives.
05:02Here's what it says.
05:03Listen to these words.
05:04Continue earnestly in prayer,
05:07being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.
05:09Meanwhile, praying also for us
05:12that God would open to us a door for the Word
05:14to speak the mystery of Christ
05:17for which I am also in chains
05:20that I may make it manifest as I ought to speak.
05:24Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside,
05:27redeeming the time.
05:28Let your speech always be with grace,
05:30seasoned with salt,
05:32that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
05:36You realize when you read this
05:38that it's an all-encompassing passage.
05:41For in these few verses,
05:42it's like Paul takes all we've been learning
05:44about the Holy Spirit,
05:46he wraps it up into three areas of life
05:48where most of us will admit
05:50we have the most difficulty living consistently for God.
05:53He talks about staying consistent in the way we pray
05:57and in the way we speak with grace.
05:59Let's take each one of them
06:01and follow what Paul said
06:03right from this passage of Scripture.
06:05Holy Spirit, help for our worship
06:07begins with Paul's instruction for us
06:10to pray diligently.
06:13Colossians 4-2,
06:14continue earnestly in prayer.
06:17Continue in prayer is a command.
06:19It is not a suggestion.
06:20It is not something he says you should do
06:23if you feel like it.
06:24It says,
06:25don't let prayer be an afterthought.
06:27Don't let it be a ho-hum kind of thing
06:29you could take or leave.
06:31God wants us to pray diligently.
06:34He wants us to keep after it,
06:35even when it's not easy.
06:37Jesus taught his disciples to pray always
06:40and never give up.
06:41And if you read the New Testament carefully,
06:44you will see that this was the way
06:46they did it in the early church.
06:48These are verses from Acts and Ephesians,
06:51but listen carefully.
06:53These all continued with one accord
06:55in prayer and supplication,
06:58and they continued steadfastly
07:00in the apostles' doctrine, fellowship,
07:02breaking of bread, and prayers.
07:04But we will give ourselves continually
07:06to prayer, to the ministry of the Word.
07:08Pray always with all prayer
07:10and supplication in the Spirit,
07:12being watchful to this end
07:14with all perseverance and supplication
07:16for all the saints.
07:17And 1 Thessalonians 5-17,
07:20which we all know,
07:21pray without ceasing.
07:23What does it mean to pray without ceasing?
07:25It doesn't mean to walk around
07:27muttering all day long
07:29like you are in some kind of a trance.
07:32It has nothing to do with that.
07:33It means to take your prayer life seriously.
07:37The Bible says pray diligently.
07:40Make prayer important.
07:42Sometimes it's not very important.
07:44We put it over here on the side.
07:46We go to church.
07:47We sing songs.
07:48We might even talk about Jesus.
07:50But prayer is a very difficult thing.
07:53And you know what, I read somewhere
07:54that if you want to empty a church,
07:56announce to the church
07:57that you're going to speak
07:58for 10 weeks on prayer.
08:00Nobody will come
08:01because everybody feels guilty
08:03about this particular subject.
08:05I don't want you to feel guilty,
08:07men and women.
08:07I want you to be encouraged to know
08:10prayer is a tremendous part of our life.
08:12And the Bible says, first of all,
08:14pray diligently.
08:16Then it says, being vigilant in it.
08:19Now, how in the world can you be vigilant in prayer?
08:23What does it mean to be watchful in prayer?
08:25First of all, it means to stay awake.
08:28I don't know about you.
08:30I have fallen asleep in a few prayers over the years.
08:34I had a hard night, got up in the morning,
08:36tried to pray, and all of a sudden,
08:38I realized I was in a different zone.
08:41I don't know where I was.
08:43I'm sure God wasn't getting a lot out of my prayer.
08:46It means much more than that.
08:48It means to be watchful.
08:51It means to have an attitude
08:53of being spiritually alert.
08:54It means to notice what's going on around us,
08:57to be on the lookout for spiritual danger
09:00in our own lives, in the lives of others.
09:02I'm not sure about you,
09:03but I've noticed that the discipline of prayer
09:05can easily slip away from you
09:07if you're not attentive to it.
09:10One day without prayer,
09:11which can happen to anyone,
09:13becomes two days.
09:16Two days become three.
09:18Three days become a week,
09:19and then you wake up and realize with a start
09:21that a whole month has gone by,
09:23and you've hardly prayed at all.
09:25Here's what I know.
09:26Wherever you stopped in your prayer life,
09:28God will accept you to start right back again right now.
09:31It's never too much time that's gone by.
09:34If you realize and become convicted
09:36that you're not praying as you should,
09:38you don't have to go to class to figure that out.
09:40Just start doing it.
09:41Just start praying again,
09:43and you'll discover that God will honor that.
09:45You've never slipped so far away from God
09:48that he won't accept you when you pray again.
09:50Don't let the devil tell you that.
09:52It's just not true.
09:53God loves you.
09:54His hands are reaching out to you.
09:56He longs for your fellowship.
09:58Don't deprive him of it anymore.
09:59Just get back to praying.
10:01That's what the Scripture teaches us to do.
10:03So we're to pray diligently and watchfully.
10:06Notice this.
10:07We're to pray thankfully.
10:09Paul says in Colossians 4 to pray with thanksgiving.
10:14Have you ever found yourself rushing into prayer,
10:16get halfway through it,
10:17and you realize you haven't breathed
10:19a single word of thanks to the Lord?
10:21All you've done is back your truck up
10:23and dump all your problems on his doorstep.
10:27We all get our gimme lists together, don't we?
10:30Mine starts accumulating throughout the day,
10:32stored in some file in the back of my mind.
10:35I want this, I need that,
10:36I've got to have this and such and such.
10:38And sometimes, if I'm not careful,
10:40I can rush right into prayer with the list
10:43that is absent the thanking of God.
10:46The Bible tells us we're to begin our prayers with gratitude.
10:50Here's Psalm 100 and verse 4.
10:53Enter into his gates with thanksgiving
10:55and into his courts with praise.
10:58Be thankful to him and bless his name.
11:03Our very first words in prayer
11:05should be the words of gratitude.
11:06When you wake up in the morning,
11:08start by saying,
11:09Lord, thank you for another day.
11:11Thank you for your night of rest
11:13and for the strength to face what's ahead.
11:15For my family, for the church,
11:17you've placed in my life, Lord, so many things.
11:20Thank you, thank you, thank you.
11:21I don't know if you need that kind of a reminder,
11:24but all of us know that if we're not careful,
11:27we ask God for everything
11:29and we thank him for very little.
11:32How many of you could give a witness
11:33that God is a wonderful God
11:35and he's worthy of our praise?
11:36Can I get a witness today?
11:42So, Paul says,
11:45pray diligently, pray watchfully,
11:47pray thankfully,
11:48and then I love this one,
11:50pray evangelistically.
11:52Meanwhile, praying for all so for us
11:54that God would open to us a door for the word
11:57to speak the mystery of Christ
11:59for which I am also in chains
12:00that I may make it manifest
12:02as I ought to speak.
12:04Now, remember,
12:05Paul's writing this letter from prison.
12:08Colossians is one of the prison epistles.
12:11He's not asking for an open door
12:13so he can get out of jail.
12:14That's probably what I have been praying for,
12:16but not Paul.
12:17No, that's not the principal thing on his heart.
12:20That open door phrase
12:22appears in Scripture several times
12:24and Paul is not saying,
12:27please open the door to my jail.
12:29He's saying,
12:30Lord, I want you to open the door
12:32for opportunity for me.
12:34He's affirming that God is the one
12:36who opens doors,
12:37but he opens them when we ask him.
12:40How do you know that?
12:41The Bible tells us that.
12:42Look with me at Revelation chapter 3.
12:45These things says he who is holy
12:48and he who is true,
12:50he who has the key of David,
12:53he who opens and no one shuts
12:55and shuts and no one opens.
12:58I know your works.
12:59See, I have set before you an open door
13:02and no one can shut it.
13:04When we ask for open doors,
13:07we're really asking for opportunities.
13:10And when God provides one,
13:12you won't have to force it open yourself.
13:13It will be clear, unmistakable,
13:17wide enough to walk through with confidence.
13:21Paul's purpose here was to have open doors
13:24so that he could teach the grace of God.
13:27That's what the Bible says.
13:28He wanted the ability to explain to his people
13:32the hidden counsels of God.
13:33He wanted to help them understand
13:35how the Jews and the Gentiles
13:37had been brought together into one church
13:38and one body and one kingdom.
13:40He wanted to make them understand.
13:42He says,
13:43I want to be clear in my teaching.
13:46I pray that a lot for what I do here.
13:49I don't want to just get up here and talk.
13:51Someone once told me a long time ago,
13:53if they haven't learned, you haven't taught.
13:57And that's a really interesting thing, is it not?
14:00If you teach and they haven't learned,
14:03you haven't taught.
14:06The Holy Spirit helps our worship.
14:09He helps us in these ways when we pray.
14:13Notice, secondly, the Holy Spirit will help us in our walk.
14:16Verse 5, walk in wisdom toward those who are outside,
14:21redeeming the time.
14:23How many of you know the Christian life
14:25is just one step at a time?
14:27When you get ahead of that,
14:29you get in trouble, don't you?
14:30I was thinking about the verse that says,
14:33according to your days, so shall your strength be.
14:37How many of you are along with me when you say,
14:38Lord, this is Monday.
14:39I'd like strength for the whole week.
14:41No, you don't get strength for the whole week.
14:43You get strength for Monday.
14:44And when will you get Tuesday strength?
14:47On Tuesday.
14:49The Bible says, we walk by faith.
14:54And then he says in this passage,
14:55something very interesting.
14:57He says, we walk toward those who are without.
15:01What a wonderful picture that is.
15:04There are many Christians who think
15:05that once you become a Christian,
15:07you shut off all relationships
15:09with the people in the world,
15:11and you stay a little bit each day in your holy huddle,
15:13and you live there for the rest of your time.
15:17I don't see that in the Bible.
15:19The Lord Jesus associated with sinners,
15:22with prostitutes, societal rejects.
15:26How are we supposed to win a world
15:28if we don't know anybody in the world?
15:31How are we going to touch people
15:33who don't know Christ if we're never with them?
15:35As someone has said,
15:36there's no impact without contact.
15:40So the Bible doesn't teach that you as a Christian
15:43should get over in your little group of other Christians
15:45and never talk to anybody
15:46who doesn't believe what you believe
15:48or live like you live.
15:49The Bible says, however,
15:51we're to live our lives toward them.
15:54Paul says in this passage
15:56that when you walk with wisdom,
15:58you do it openly toward those
15:59who are outside of the faith.
16:02You do your best to be an example
16:04for what Christ means to you
16:06as you live your life.
16:07And then Paul says,
16:09redeem your time.
16:10Seize every opportunity,
16:12like merchants who are buying up
16:14a commodity in the market.
16:16This whole business of our walk before the world
16:18is so critical.
16:20And you say,
16:21it isn't fair that my faith
16:23should be a determinant
16:25in the life of somebody else.
16:26It isn't fair.
16:27It's just the way it is.
16:29That's why our responsibility is so great.
16:32Ladies and gentlemen,
16:33whether we like it or not,
16:34we walk our faith toward the world.
16:36We're not going to be perfect.
16:38We're going to fall down sometimes.
16:40We're going to have to back up
16:41and retool,
16:43start over in some areas.
16:45But what Paul wants us to understand
16:47is that we're the Christians in this world.
16:50Christ has given us eternal life and hope.
16:52And we're to be the ambassadors of that
16:55to the whole world.
16:55And never has that been more important
16:57than it is now
16:58because the world seems to be getting darker
17:00and darker.
17:01And the world gets darker.
17:03The light gets brighter.
17:04And we have the opportunity
17:05to represent our dear Savior
17:07in a world that rejects him.
17:09Oh, what a privilege that is.
17:11And how bold and strategic
17:14we should be in doing it.
17:16So then, Paul writes about
17:19the Spirit's help in our worship
17:21and in our walk.
17:22In verse 6 of Colossians 4,
17:24he helps us with our witness.
17:26He says,
17:35Now, the Bible says that one of the hardest things
17:37you and I will ever have to deal with
17:39is the control of our tongue.
17:41Do you know the book of James tells us
17:43that it's more difficult to bridle your tongue
17:46than it is to bridle a wild horse?
17:50You can let those words out,
17:52but you can't stuff them back in.
17:55You can send them forth,
17:56but you can't call them back.
17:57You can say them,
17:58but you can't unsay them.
18:00And we all know that.
18:02The tongue gets a lot of people in trouble.
18:04What we say, how we say it,
18:07when we say it.
18:08So it's not surprising
18:09that Paul would,
18:11in his final verse of this paragraph,
18:14talk about our Christian witness.
18:17Three ways the Spirit should influence our speech
18:20as we seek to live as witnesses toward the world.
18:23Very practical stuff here, you guys.
18:26Number one, our witness should be courteous.
18:29He said,
18:30Let your speech always be with grace.
18:33I don't know about you,
18:34but I like gracious people.
18:36I pray to God that I will not be a grumpy old man,
18:39but a gracious old man.
18:42That's the way we should be.
18:43We should be gracious people.
18:45We read of our Lord Jesus
18:47that he was full of grace and truth,
18:50truth packaged in grace.
18:53That's the way Christ related to men and women
18:55in his earthly walk,
18:57and so we should too.
18:58Our witness must be courteous,
19:00and it must be compelling.
19:01Notice Paul says next,
19:03Let your speech always be seasoned with salt.
19:07What does that mean?
19:08It means don't let your words become flat and tasteless.
19:12Salt had two particularly important purposes
19:14in the New Testament.
19:16It was a preservative to keep things from spoiling,
19:20and it was used to create thirst in animals.
19:23Paul is saying,
19:24Let there be something in what you say
19:26in your witness that compels people to know God.
19:31Get creative in how you communicate Christ.
19:34Talk in such a way that when people are around you,
19:36they sense this is not something you've put on.
19:39It is something in you that comes out effervescently
19:43with the power of the Holy Spirit.
19:45Let it be really you.
19:47I like to brag on Jesus.
19:49Do you?
19:50I think we should be bold about that
19:53so that people know this is not about us.
19:55This is about the one who loved us
19:57and gave himself for us.
19:59Paul says,
20:00Our witness must be courteous
20:02and compelling and compassionate.
20:05He says, verse 6,
20:07That you may know how you ought to answer each one.
20:10You talk to people differently,
20:11not because your message is different,
20:14but because people are different.
20:16You suit your witness to the one
20:18with whom you are speaking.
20:19I talk to someone who has just lost a family member
20:22about Jesus in a much different way
20:25than I might talk to them
20:26if I were sitting with them
20:27at a ball game or something.
20:29You have to figure out the situation.
20:31You have to be compassionate
20:33about where those people are in their life
20:35and then talk to them in that mode.
20:38You don't just use the same four spiritual laws
20:41no matter where you go and what you do.
20:43If you do that,
20:44you're going to have a lot of awkward,
20:47discouraging experiences.
20:48Where are they?
20:50How can you relate to them?
20:51How can you love them in their situation?
20:54And how can you share the Lord Jesus with them?
20:56I think one of the most difficult things as a Christian
21:00is to witness to people who are in your own family.
21:03I've heard that from so many people over the years.
21:06Someone once told me something like this.
21:08When a wife talks to her husband about the Lord,
21:11she might be conveying to him,
21:13whether she wants to or not,
21:14that he hasn't been a good husband
21:17or one that he should have been.
21:19And so the spiritual thing is a way
21:22that she's just telling him he's not measuring up.
21:25What a difference when a woman comes to her husband,
21:28she says this,
21:29honey, you've been everything
21:30I could ever have asked for in a husband.
21:32I love you so much.
21:34You are a great provider,
21:36and I know you love me,
21:37and I'm so grateful for that.
21:39I just wish there was one thing we could share together
21:42that is so very special to me.
21:44How different that is from an accusatory comment
21:48or you need to get saved
21:50or whatever you say when you have those conversations.
21:54Same thing is true with our parents.
21:57Over the years, I've had many people say,
21:59my parents don't know the Lord,
22:01and whenever I try to talk to them, they get mad.
22:03Or they say, I don't want any of that stuff
22:05talked about in my house.
22:06You may not talk about that when you come here.
22:09And, of course, they have the right to say that,
22:12and you should obey that.
22:13But a lot of times that happens
22:16because of the crazy way we go about
22:19trying to win our parents,
22:20because the same rule is true.
22:23If you go back and try to witness to your father
22:25who's not a Christian,
22:27do you know what you might convey to him?
22:29You might convey that you think he was a bad father.
22:32After all, what kind of father
22:33would let his kids grow up without religion?
22:36So you need to season your witness and say to him,
22:39you've been a great dad.
22:40I couldn't have asked for a better one.
22:42But you know what, Dad?
22:44God has given me something so great,
22:46and I love you so much.
22:47I can't help but share with you what he's done for me.
22:50I wish you knew my God like I do.
22:54When you affirm a person's worth
22:56without blasting him or her with the gospel right up front,
23:00you win an opportunity.
23:02The Holy Spirit gives us the wisdom
23:04and the grace to do that.
23:06He empowers you and me to look at every situation
23:09and to discern how God wants us
23:11to tailor-make our witness to each individual.
23:16Sheldon Van Auken was an American writer
23:18best known for his memoir.
23:20He wrote a book called A Severe Mercy,
23:22which is worthy of reading.
23:24It was published back in 1977.
23:27In his college, he was a convinced atheist.
23:31He thought religion was simply unnecessary,
23:34but he had some wonderful Christian friends
23:36who really cared about him
23:38and often talked to him about Jesus.
23:41They didn't argue with him.
23:43They just genuinely shared with him
23:45about what Jesus had done to change their lives.
23:48And it eventually started to bother him in a good way.
23:53He couldn't stop thinking about it,
23:55so he wrote a letter to C.S. Lewis,
23:57and he said,
23:59something's happening to me
24:00and I don't even know what to do.
24:03Lewis wrote back and he said,
24:04I think the Holy Spirit is after you
24:06and I don't think you're gonna get away.
24:10And he didn't.
24:12He didn't get away.
24:14After lots of questions and honest conversations,
24:17Sheldon Van Auken put his trust in Jesus
24:20and later said he felt like he just jumped toward Christ
24:23and found that Christ was just holding him
24:26and waiting for him.
24:28We don't have to get everything done today.
24:31Your witness today might not get you
24:33to the place where you want it to go.
24:36Here's what I suggest.
24:37Don't witness to someone in such a way
24:39that if they reject the witness, they reject you.
24:43Witness to someone in such a way
24:46that if it doesn't materialize the first time,
24:48the door is still open to continue to talk about it.
24:52How many of you didn't come to Christ
24:54the first time you heard about him?
24:55You came to Christ four or five or six times later
24:58after someone had loved you
25:00and told you how much they loved you
25:01and told you about how much Jesus had changed their life.
25:05We can be more effective if we just follow the Scripture.
25:09We can be better in worshiping,
25:12better in walking,
25:14better in witnessing
25:16if we let the Holy Spirit control us from the inside.
25:26Thank you for watching Turning Point.
