03:21Kenwood is very rural,
03:24very typical small town Louisiana.
03:27There's a saying that there's a church
03:29on every corner in the south
03:31and here's a Baptist church she went to.
03:35We kind of bonded over the fact
03:37that I grew up in the Baptist church as well.
03:46Britney graduated from the church choir
03:48to become a child star on TV
03:50in Disney's Mickey Mouse Club
03:52alongside Justin Timberlake,
03:58Ryan Gosling,
03:59Your mom is so strict.

04:16Back then, though,
04:18the little town of Kentwood was still home.

05:34So this is quite a sweet photograph
05:35and it's giving you
05:37a sense of her background.
05:39So we've got this sense
05:40of her being from,
05:41you know,
05:42a fairly normal family
05:44and all of these brown tones
05:45suggest that the family's drawing
05:47from this rather 1970s
05:49aesthetic
05:50and she appears to be
05:52completely unstyled in it.
05:53So she's wearing trousers
05:55which don't fit her particularly well,
05:57so they're looking all kind of rumpled.
05:59It's really wholesome.
06:01She's got this slight boyishness to her.
06:04There's this idea
06:05that she's got this closeness
06:07to her family.
06:08She very much seems
06:08like an everyday small-town girl.
06:13Jenny Elisku is a music journalist
06:16who interviewed Britney
06:17from the beginning of her career
06:18and grew close to the young star.
06:23I think that Britney
06:25having a girl-next-door image
06:27is a huge part of
06:28what kicked things off early on
06:31and truly her authentic self
06:33is shining through.
06:34And she has always been
06:35in all of my encounters with her
06:37just the sweetest,
06:39most down-to-earth person.
06:41Britney's mum, Lynn,
06:42and her little sister, Jamie Lynn,
06:44were also photographed by Lisa.

07:49so we went to the local drive-in place.
07:52I was smooshed in the back of the truck
07:54to get the images,
07:55so it was kind of challenging too,
07:57but Jason is driving,
07:58a childhood friend,

08:01I think this is her cousin here,
08:03and we just had so much fun.
08:05They were singing to Madonna,
08:07and Britney was like,
08:08I hope I get to meet her one day.
08:10And we were all like,
08:12oh, that would be really cool.

08:19and I don't mean naive in a bad way.

08:43Yeah, I'm completely overwhelmed.
08:44I get to travel and see the world.
08:46I knew I loved the song,
08:47but I didn't know everyone else would.
08:49A week after Lisa's shoot,
08:51Britney's first album,
08:52Baby One More Time,
08:53was released.
08:55It catapulted the 17-year-old
08:56to global stardom,
08:58selling over 10 million copies
09:00in its first year.
09:02But it was the music video,
09:04made by British pop promo director
09:07Nigel Dick,
09:08that turned Britney into a star overnight.
09:15I'm now locked in with,
09:17oh, you're the guy that did that Britney video.
09:21Here she is,
09:22the biggest news thing in American music,
09:24Britney Spears.
09:26The first idea that I came up with
09:28was rejected.
09:29That something wasn't right
09:32But the people at the label
09:34had spoken with Britney,
09:36and she had an idea,
09:38could I get on a phone call with her?
09:41She said,
09:42I want to be dancing in a school
09:45with some cute boys.
09:47And that was the brief.
09:50Oh, baby, baby,
09:51how was I supposed to know
09:56That something wasn't right
09:59That something wasn't right
10:05The teenage Britney dictated
10:07not only the location for the shoot,
10:10but also the most controversial image
10:12of the video.
10:14From my instruction,
10:16the wardrobe lady
10:17brought in a bunch of tracksuit bottoms
10:21and T-shirts and sweatshirts and whatnot,
10:23and so we put this on Britney,
10:24and she said,
10:25well, wouldn't I be wearing a school uniform?
10:27And I'm like,
10:28I just don't think this is a good idea,
10:32because certain people
10:33are going to get
10:34a certain perception about this.
10:40And my producer was a woman,
10:43and the label representative
10:45was also a woman,
10:46and they both said,
10:47oh, I think that's a great idea,
10:48and I was overruled.
10:52Britney embodied the American dream
10:54and knew how to appeal
10:56to teens everywhere.
11:01Kevin Wu is a lifelong Britney superfan
11:04who was instantly hooked on the video.
11:07They played this every morning on MTV
11:10at like 6 in the morning.
11:13So I could watch this
11:14and go to my boring high school
11:16fantasizing that this was what
11:18high school was actually like,
11:19which was exactly what she intended.
11:21Tell me, baby
11:23I really admire the fact
11:25that as a teenager,
11:26she took creative control.
11:28And this was what sold me
11:30on Britney Spears.
11:33Wearing school uniform in this video,
11:35she's not being like the little girl.
11:38She's being the very empowered girl
11:39that is very much the legacy
11:41of what's been going on
11:42earlier in the 1990s.
11:46There was this incredibly important
11:48transformation in the image of girlhood.
11:51And it was really driven by
11:54Riop Girl,
11:55which was feminist punk rock music
11:58and also picked up
11:59by the Spice Girls
12:00calling for girl power.
12:06Standing up to this kind of idea
12:08of women as sex objects
12:10and very vocal about
12:11the power of the girl.
12:14And I think the styling
12:16of this video is,
12:17I'm sure in her mind,
12:19absolutely speaking
12:21to her generation,
12:22what was really striking
12:23in the moment
12:24when this came out
12:25was that immediately
12:26it was very, very sexualized.
12:28She was leched over.
12:30My loneliness
12:31is killing me.
12:33There was a review
12:35which said,
12:35Britney is an artist
12:37conceived by oily old men
12:39in raincoats.
12:41And I was at dinner
12:43with somebody that I know.
12:44They just looked me in the eye
12:45and they said,
12:46are you a pedophile?
12:48Hit me, baby,
12:49one more time.
12:53Everyone figured out,
12:54oh,
12:56part of what is gaining traction here
12:58is this uncomfortable desire
13:02that is around her.
13:04And so much of what's happened
13:06to her has been
13:07because of this thing
13:08that we projected onto her
13:11from the very beginning
13:12that we won't let go of.

13:21opened the floodgates
13:22for the media to speculate
13:23about the 17-year-old's sex life.

13:30an indecent proposal.

15:45looking at it

15:47that seems clear
15:48once you see it.

16:24It's very interesting
16:26that although she's being
16:28styled in this
16:29very grown up way
16:30she's also very much there
16:31with a kind of
16:32childish doll
16:33so she is
16:35being shown
16:36to be childlike
16:37to have that cute aspect
16:38to her
16:38at the same time
16:40that she's also being shown
16:41as sexually available.
16:43For me
16:44this is an image
16:45that's located
16:46in the world of soft porn.
16:48We're looking down
16:50at Brittany
16:51as she's lying in bed
16:52so immediately
16:53that puts the viewer
16:55into the position
16:55of the lover.
16:57She's looking directly
16:58into your eyes
16:59and you're in a moment
17:00of intimate relation
17:01with her
17:01because her body's
17:02very close to you
17:03and it's very exposed
17:04and it's very vulnerable
17:06and it very much
17:07puts it into
17:08the tradition
17:08of women
17:10who are presented
17:11as nudes
17:12for enjoyment
17:14by an assumed
17:16male audience
17:19but then there's
17:20also this sense
17:21that she's been
17:22so manipulated
17:24that she looks
17:25like she's a doll
17:26and indeed
17:27she's a doll
17:28lying still
17:29box fresh
17:30inside the satin
17:31of its presentation box.
17:33The doll
17:34is available
17:34to be played with
17:35to be manipulated.
17:38She becomes
17:38this emblem
17:40for other people
17:41to project
17:42their fantasies onto.
17:45David LaChapelle
17:46is famous
17:47for his sensuous
17:48intimate photographs
17:49of celebrities.
17:54Images that speak
17:55to the trust
17:56that his subjects
17:57have in him.
18:01LaChapelle's photography
18:02I associate
18:03with being
18:04hyper everything.
18:06So everything's
18:07very, very brightly coloured,

18:11and a world
18:12of high artifice

18:13as well.

18:17co-opting Brittany
18:18for his world
18:18so she's slid
18:19into his aesthetic here.
