The Clan of the Cave Bear (1986) is an American adventure film directed by Michael Chapman and based on the bestselling novel by Jean M. Auel. The movie stars Daryl Hannah as Ayla, a young Cro-Magnon woman orphaned during an earthquake and adopted by a group of Neanderthals known as "The Clan." The film explores her struggle for acceptance within the tribe, her intelligence, and her growing conflict with Broud, the clan's future chief, played by Thomas G. Waites.
The film was shot in remote locations across western Canada, including British Columbia, the Yukon Territory, and the Northwest Territories. The animals, including Bart the Bear (who played the cave bear), were trained by professionals. Dialogue is primarily conveyed through sign language, with subtitles for the audience.
While the film received mixed reviews upon release—Roger Ebert criticized it for lacking authenticity and relying on modern sensibilities—its visual style, score, and performances, particularly Hannah’s, have earned it a cult following over time. A planned sequel was never made.
