The Favors stopped by Genius to break down their song “David’s Brother.” The track appears on the band’s debut album 'The Dream' and was produced by FINNEAS himself. On today’s episode of Verified, the duo serenades fans, shares the story behind the real-life “David’s Brother,” how they came together as a band, and much more!
00:00David is the drummer that we wrote this song with and we don't even name David's brother which is Vincent
00:06We just say David's brother and Ash at the time had never met Vincent
00:10So the song wasn't nearly as funny to me as it was to them as we were writing it
00:14Because I had no context as to who this person was and then I met him at the music video shoot
00:19David's brother's in the video and I was like I get it
00:22Yeah, he's this like sweetie pie Jeremiah Johnson bearded figure
00:27Very handsome, if you saw the person you loved at the bar with David's brother you'd be like
00:33Oh dang it
00:34You know
00:35So
00:36Ash and I became friends in like 2017
00:46Fast forward another several years
00:482023
00:49Ash was on a hiatus from touring
00:52And sent me a text in April of 2023 that was like
00:56What if we just started a band and made one record and played five shows total
01:00And just did it for fun to see how it went
01:03And I was like oh that's the best
01:05I was so happy to receive that text
01:08And fast forward one more time two years later
01:10Here we are talking about this album
01:12We use a lot of the specific imagery in that first verse to sort of like wait the razor's still in the socket and my hair's in the drain and he's like your hair's in the drain
01:35There's like this like flip of um pronouns and in a very like musical theater way and I know that if I heard this song
01:43I'd be like I need to know where the story like keeps going
01:47Hold my breath and count to 30 ever since you left
01:55I don't feel worthy under house arrest
01:58Dishes dirty couldn't stay
02:01Stay home
02:03Stay home
02:07Hold my breath and count to 30
02:11Came out just like improv
02:13I was amused by it when I thought about it
02:16Because it's so long
02:18So long
02:18Under house arrest
02:20Dishes dirty
02:21Couldn't stay home
02:22Like you're just taking stock of your place
02:25And you're like this is disgusting
02:26I gotta go out
02:27And so it pushes you out the door
02:28Everything here reminds me of you
02:30So I need to get out
02:31Yeah
02:31Too much pain in my pleasure
02:35With an eighth in my purse
02:38And you never looked better
02:42But I've never felt worse
02:45Cocaine skinny man
02:46Yeah
02:46I've never actually tried cocaine
02:49But I have perceived in other people that like they often if they're crashing out
02:54Are like doing a drug that is like
02:56Well yeah you look real thin right now
02:59But I know that that's a result of the fact that you're not eating
