00:00David is the drummer that we wrote this song with and we don't even name David's brother which is Vincent
00:06We just say David's brother and Ash at the time had never met Vincent
00:10So the song wasn't nearly as funny to me as it was to them as we were writing it
00:14Because I had no context as to who this person was and then I met him at the music video shoot
00:19David's brother's in the video and I was like I get it
00:22Yeah, he's this like sweetie pie Jeremiah Johnson bearded figure
00:27Very handsome, if you saw the person you loved at the bar with David's brother you'd be like
00:33Oh dang it
00:34You know
00:35So
00:36Ash and I became friends in like 2017
00:46Fast forward another several years
00:482023
00:49Ash was on a hiatus from touring
00:52And sent me a text in April of 2023 that was like
00:56What if we just started a band and made one record and played five shows total
01:00And just did it for fun to see how it went
01:03And I was like oh that's the best
01:05I was so happy to receive that text
01:08And fast forward one more time two years later
01:10Here we are talking about this album
01:12We use a lot of the specific imagery in that first verse to sort of like wait the razor's still in the socket and my hair's in the drain and he's like your hair's in the drain
01:35There's like this like flip of um pronouns and in a very like musical theater way and I know that if I heard this song
01:43I'd be like I need to know where the story like keeps going
01:47Hold my breath and count to 30 ever since you left
01:55I don't feel worthy under house arrest
01:58Dishes dirty couldn't stay
02:01Stay home
02:03Stay home
02:07Hold my breath and count to 30
02:11Came out just like improv
02:13I was amused by it when I thought about it
02:16Because it's so long
02:18So long
02:18Under house arrest
02:20Dishes dirty
02:21Couldn't stay home
02:22Like you're just taking stock of your place
02:25And you're like this is disgusting
02:26I gotta go out
02:27And so it pushes you out the door
02:28Everything here reminds me of you
02:30So I need to get out
02:31Yeah
02:31Too much pain in my pleasure
02:35With an eighth in my purse
02:38And you never looked better
02:42But I've never felt worse
02:45Cocaine skinny man
02:46Yeah
02:46I've never actually tried cocaine
02:49But I have perceived in other people that like they often if they're crashing out
02:54Are like doing a drug that is like
02:56Well yeah you look real thin right now
02:59But I know that that's a result of the fact that you're not eating
03:01And you're not sleeping
03:02And you're
03:03You know what I mean
03:03I think there's that kind of dichotomy
03:05Like that's the too much pain in my pleasure
03:06Of like I'm gonna go out tonight
03:08And I'm gonna party
03:08And you're like
03:09In a sad way
03:10Like you're not celebrating anything
03:12It's sad
03:13Wash my sheets
03:16And change my number
03:17Go to therapy
03:19And acupunctious
03:21Are you at the bar
03:23With David's brother
03:25Should I stay home
03:28Stay home
03:32You're trying to fix yourself
03:35Everything possible you know to do
03:37Yeah I've cleaned my apartment
03:38My number's different
03:39And I'm going to acupuncture
03:41I'm working on
03:43I'm zen
03:44And then you go to the bar
03:46And they're there
03:46They're with a person you've met before
03:48And you're like
03:48Oh my god
03:49This is a disaster
03:51I shouldn't even be here
03:52I should have stayed home
03:53Yeah
03:53The bends are something
04:11A scuba diver gets
04:12When they come up for air
04:14Too quickly
04:14The oxygen in their blood
04:16Like I don't know exactly the science
04:18But it rebels against them
04:19And they can like
04:20Have a stroke and die
04:21The only way to cure the bends
04:24Is you have to go back
04:25Underwater
04:26And stay there
04:28Till like you slowly
04:30Essentially heal
04:32Your body
04:33And then you can slowly
04:34Come up for air
04:35And I thought that was
04:36The most ingenious lyric
04:38For a metaphor of
04:40Breakup
04:41In that
04:41You cannot force
04:43Getting over someone
04:44You kind of have to
04:46Go underwater
04:47Hold your breath
04:48Do all the slow
04:50Healing things
04:51To finally get
04:53You know
04:53Over this person
04:55I think this is a funny verse
05:10Because
05:10Phineas is
05:12One of the funniest people I know
05:13So making a joke
05:14Pretty normal for him
05:15And like
05:16Can take a shot without wincing
05:18Me however
05:19I think I'm funny
05:20But I'm like
05:21I'm like physically funny
05:23Like
05:23I can't tell a good joke
05:25To save my life
05:26I can try
05:27And I'll wince
05:28When I take a shot
05:29So I feel like
05:29This is a little bit of like
05:31My verse of like
05:32You can pretend
05:33And then
05:34But you're gonna fail
05:35And someone
05:36Who knows you really well
05:37Is gonna see through it
05:38Yeah
05:46A lot of lackluster
05:47Got me wishing
05:49I was David's brother
05:51On the way
05:52Home
05:54Should've stayed home
05:58This one for us
06:01The pre
06:01Is like
06:01This is on the impressionistic
06:03Side of things
06:04I feel like
06:05We had this kind of like
06:07Shoo-wop
06:08Sha-la-la thing
06:10We wanted to get
06:11LA in there
06:12Yeah
06:13The moonlit drive
06:14La-la lackluster
06:16If the first verse
06:17Is you're at home
06:18And you gotta get out of there
06:19And then the second verse
06:20Is like
06:20Alright
06:21I've cleaned my apartment
06:22Here I go
06:23I'm at the bar
06:24Oh my god
06:24David's brother's there
06:25And then the third verse
06:26Is like
06:26I gotta get out of here
06:27And then you're on the way
06:28Back home
06:29And even the moonlight
06:30Is
06:31Lackluster
06:32It doesn't matter
06:33Yeah
06:33Yeah, exactly
06:34Oh, I
06:36Still wait outside
06:41For you
06:42Wonder why
06:44I always seem to lose
06:51I never mind
06:54The way I hurt for you
06:59All the time
07:02The last new line in the song is
07:08I never mind the way I hurt for you
07:09All the time
07:10That's why it's done there
07:12Cause you're like
07:12That's the
07:13That's the end of the little
07:15Beat poem
07:16That's how this character feels
07:17In this moment
07:18So let's just bring it back
07:19To that chorus
07:19One more time
07:20Coming around
07:26Again
07:27It's keeping me down
07:32Like the best
07:36I'm coming around
07:39Coming around
07:40I also just love how broken
07:57Like Phineas' voice sounds
07:58At the end of that song
07:59It's not like every song
08:02That we get him in falsetto
08:03Yeah
08:04You sound so sad
08:05Yeah
08:06On the record
08:07I love that
08:08Cause it is such a fun song
08:10And we do sound like
08:11If you watch the music video
08:12We look like we're having
08:13The greatest time ever
08:15But to land the plane
08:17With Phineas being like
08:18Pretty heartbroken
08:20Was good
08:21There's a lot of little things
08:25That go into the process
08:26Of like coming up for air
08:28Yeah
08:28And listening to music
08:30Is one of them
08:31For me at least
08:32In a breakup
08:33You know that Andy Grammer song
08:34That's like
08:35Gotta keep your head up
08:36Yes
08:37I've never felt like that
08:39One time
08:39Like I've never ever
08:41That's never come from
08:43The heart for me ever
08:45If somebody was like
08:46Hey we're writing a song
08:47For a Target commercial
08:49Do you want to write
08:50The happiest thing
08:51And I could pretend
08:52But if I'm writing
08:54From the heart
08:54Like it's not
08:55Those are not
08:56The things that come out
08:57Of the heart
08:58I'm laughing
08:59You
