Transcript
00:00From now on, we'll be known as X-Force.
00:06Isn't that a little derivative?
00:07I don't recall asking your opinion, Peter.
00:11That was me.
00:12Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most shocking and surprising deaths in movies.
00:20Spoilers ahead for the following films.
00:22I would like my undies, babe.
00:24Are these guys gonna hurt us, Paul?
00:26No, Donnie. These men are cowards.
00:27Number 30. Cyclops. X-Men The Last Stand.
00:32When Jean Grey comes back as a villain, she makes the plot of X-Men The Last Stand much more interesting.
00:38Cyclops goes to Alkali Lake and sees what might be a ghost.
00:52Jean?
00:55It's God.
00:56The hero thinks that she's dead, but little does he know the dark truth.
01:01Grey returns as Phoenix and kisses her former love.
01:05Unable to resist, Scott Summers takes a moment to rekindle an old flame.
01:13His grief and mixed emotions then lead him into a trap.
01:18With his glasses off, Summers is betrayed by the one person he thought he could trust.
01:24It's all the more unexpected considering the character's role in the previous films.
01:28Tell me what happened to him.
01:30Number 29. Bill Willoughby. Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri.
01:49As a cold case lingers, a grieving mother pressures the local police for answers.
01:54What if he was just passing through town?
01:56Pulled blood from every man in the country then.
01:58Then what if he was just passing through the country?
02:01If it was me, I'd start up a database.
02:04Every male baby was born. Stick him on it.
02:06Chief Bill Willoughby is unable to help and deals with a terminal illness.
02:10After accepting his fate, Willoughby chooses to end his life on his own terms.
02:14It's surprising to see, even if he doesn't have that much time left.
02:27Woody Harrelson's layered performance makes you invested in a complicated man.
02:31While he might not have been perfect, he does make a quick exit that gives you pause.
02:36The lingering nature of his fate only inspires more wrinkles in this plot.
02:40This one just covers tonight, and more importantly today.
02:44Tonight, I have gone out to the horses to end it.
02:48I cannot say sorry for the act itself, although I know that for a short time you will be angry at me.
02:54Number 28. Emily, the Invisible Man.
02:57All right. Do you guys need more time with the drink menu?
03:00Yes. Lots more time.
03:02Okay, no problem at all.
03:03After fleeing her abusive partner, Cecilia starts to think he's returned with an invisible suit.
03:09She later brings her findings to sister Emily at a restaurant.
03:13While it might seem like a safe place, the location only emboldens the villain to act out.
03:18The evil man snatches a knife, kills the sibling, and frames the hero.
03:23What is that?
03:25It's some kind of suit that Adrian has built.
03:28And it has cameras, and it somehow...
03:31What?
03:32It all happens so fast that nobody has a chance to stop it.
03:36With this twist, the antagonist takes his gaslighting streak to a new level.
03:41This horror movie doesn't mind pushing boundaries either by showing that nobody is safe.
03:46Oh, no!
03:49He killed her!
03:51He killed her, he killed her, he killed her, he killed her.
03:52Number 27, Little Bill, Boogie Nights.
03:56As the assistant director, this character isn't the most powerful individual on set.
04:01Maybe we could, like, go to stock footage, or...
04:04Are you crazy?
04:05It won't match.
04:06He's also struggling to deal with his cheating wife.
04:09Little Bill finally snaps on New Year's Eve, taking drastic action against his partner.
04:14The harrowing scene builds up to a double homicide, and then another awful twist.
04:20Bill emerges from the bedroom, choosing to end it all in front of his friends.
04:24William H. Macy plays the scene especially well, and gives an icy performance.
04:30The deadly exit transitions the story into a much darker time,
04:33with the remaining ensemble trying to pick up the pieces.
04:44Number 26, Rachel Dawes, The Dark Knight.
04:50Throughout this superhero plot, Joker taunts and plays games with his victims.
04:55He puts Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes in two explosive locations.
04:59They told me that only one of us was going to make it,
05:03and that they were going to let our friends choose.
05:06Batman has to choose between them, guessing incorrectly and going to Dent.
05:10It's certainly one of the more intense scenes in the film.
05:13As the caped crusader drags away the district attorney, Dawes dies in a sudden blast.
05:19Rachel!
05:21Harvey, it's okay. It's alright, listen.
05:26Some...
05:26The complex moral conundrum makes it all the more memorable.
05:34As the villain's plan seems to work,
05:36the evil trickster ends up creating another villain in the process.
05:40Christopher Nolan's tightly wound movie reaches a dramatic,
05:43and emotional peak.
05:45I need to be honest and clear.
05:49I'm going to marry Harvey Dent.
05:52I love him, and I want to spend the rest of my life with him.
05:56Number 25, Ben, Night of the Living Dead.
06:00When the undead rise up, Ben seems to be the most capable survivor of the bunch.
06:04Well, you're her father.
06:06If you're stupid enough to go die in that trap, that's your business.
06:09However, I am not stupid enough to follow you.
06:11He holds together a house of humans against their zombie intruders.
06:15He's the one hero that lives until morning,
06:18with the hope that he'll run off to safety.
06:20Night of the Living Dead doesn't choose to give viewers a happy ending, though.
06:24When a posse shows up, they mistake the character for a walker.
06:27It's even more heartbreaking, given that it's all a misunderstanding.
06:30All right, Vince, hit him in the head, right between the eyes.
06:34In a matter-of-fact conclusion,
06:36the horror movie reminds viewers that even the good guys can't escape death.
06:40Good shot.
06:41Okay, he's dead.
06:42Let's go get him.
06:43That's another one for the fire.
06:45Number 24, Casey Becker, Scream.
06:48Hello?
06:49I'm sorry.
06:49I guess I dialed the wrong number.
06:51So why'd you dial it again?
06:53To apologize.
06:54Starting off with a phone call,
06:56this horror franchise really got off to a scary start.
06:59Casey Becker talks to an unknown caller until things turn sinister.
07:04Why do you want to know my name?
07:05I want to know who I'm looking at.
07:09What did you say?
07:10You want her to hang up or get help,
07:12but it's not going to be that easy.
07:14The character is cornered and finds her boyfriend dead outside.
07:18While Becker tries to escape the killer's clutches,
07:21she's no match for the assailant and their knife.
07:23The scene still sparks fear into the hearts of viewers everywhere.
07:32As an effective lesson in stranger danger,
07:35Scream shows you that not even a star like Drew Barrymore makes it to the end.
07:39Number 23, Donnie, the Big Lebowski.
07:43Since Walter frequently interrupts him,
07:45Donnie doesn't get to speak his mind much in the Big Lebowski.
07:48I am the walrus.
07:49Shut the f*** up, Donnie.
07:51This makes his heart attack that much harder to take.
07:54He doesn't receive many breaks,
07:56but then he's cruelly taken from the film.
07:58We're going to be a dad, dude.
08:03It just goes to show that not everybody can deal with a nihilist fight.
08:08Steve Buscemi's kindly demeanor only makes us miss the man more,
08:11with his role tying the cast together.
08:14He also receives a somewhat hilarious send-off later.
08:17Donnie was a good bowler, and a good man.
08:21He was one of us.
08:23He was a man who loved the outdoors, and bowling.
08:27When the characters give him a rough eulogy,
08:29his ashes end up lost in the wind.
08:31We commit your final mortal remains
08:34to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean,
08:38which you love so well.
08:43Good night, sweet prince.
08:44Good night, sweet prince.
08:47Number 22.
08:53Apollonia, The Godfather
08:55Unfortunately for his new bride,
08:57she didn't last long as a mafia wife.
09:00The Godfather features plenty of deaths,
09:02and this one ranks as one of the most startling.
09:05Apollonia is the innocent young newlywed,
09:07but then she ends up in a fiery blast.
09:10Michael can't save her in time either.
09:12No! No, I belong to you!
09:18Their union can't survive,
09:20with a deceitful Fabrizio planting a bomb.
09:23It's the kind of unexpected violence
09:25that happens in this masterful film.
09:27While she couldn't be saved,
09:28she certainly won't be forgotten by her husband.
09:31You could argue that this decision inspired
09:33the anti-hero's vengeful legacy.
09:35How do things ever get so far?
09:39I don't know.
09:42We're so unfortunate, so unnecessary.
09:46Number 21.
09:47X-Force, Deadpool 2.
09:50Is anybody nervous about the high winds?
09:52Gary.
09:52My name's Peter.
09:53I realize that you're new to this,
09:54but relax.
09:55You've been chosen by a higher power.
09:57Did he just call himself God?
09:58I think he did.
09:59During their exciting introduction,
10:01the X-Force runs into some bad luck.
10:03Deadpool is all excited to skydive
10:05with his new friends
10:06until their untimely deaths.
10:08Go! Go! Go!
10:17One by one,
10:18the various heroes encounter deadly obstacles
10:20and make serious miscalculations.
10:23This includes some literally shocking results
10:25and at least one notable death by Shredder.
10:28X-Force.
10:29It's a mix of dark humor and surprise
10:36that throws this superhero plot into a tailspin.
10:39Thankfully for the lead hero,
10:40he's able to carry on without them.
10:42It also seems like maybe Domino's the only one
10:45that should have been there in the first place.
10:46Peter, I miss him most,
10:48but there is a slight chance Vanisher could make it.
10:52Nope, no chance.
10:53He's dead.
10:54The whole team?
10:55Only the main ones.
10:56We're still good.
10:56We thought it was in Steven Seagal's contracts
11:03that he couldn't die.
11:04That's correct.
11:05His demise in this 90s thriller
11:07is even more shocking
11:08when you look at its cast of characters.
11:10You've got the badass army dude,
11:12a nerdy, spectacled intelligence consultant,
11:15Halle Berry,
11:16and a guy called Rat.
11:17Who would you think dies?
11:19At least Seagal does go out in style.
11:21As the good guys dock a stealth plane
11:23to a hijacked 747,
11:25Seagal's character sacrifices himself
11:27to save the others,
11:28getting sucked into oblivion.
11:30Like 40 minutes into the film.
11:32Carol!
11:32We're not gonna make it!
11:36You are!
11:37This flawed hero crash lands
11:49on a deserted planet
11:50with infamous criminal Riddick in tow.
11:52We spend the entire movie rooting for her
11:54as she keeps Riddick
11:55and the shady monsters at bay.
11:57Don't look up!
11:58Do not look up!
12:01They're killing each other!
12:04Early on,
12:05her first impulse
12:05is to sacrifice others
12:07to save her own skin,
12:08so we know we're in
12:09for a classic tale of redemption
12:10by the time the credits roll.
12:12But then,
12:12just as she finds the moral high ground
12:14and seems set to escape,
12:16boom,
12:16down with less than 5 minutes left.
12:23So close,
12:24but so far.
12:25Number 18.
12:27Philip Coulson
12:28The Avengers
12:29After appearing in Iron Man,
12:31Iron Man 2,
12:32and Thor,
12:33S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson
12:35seemed basically invincible,
12:37part of the glue
12:37holding the MCU together.
12:39Turns out he was
12:40very much invincible.
12:41As he holds Loki at bay
12:43in The Avengers,
12:44his cool, confident monologue
12:45about his gun
12:46signals to audiences
12:47that he'll come out on top.
12:49But in a sci-fi superhero movie,
12:51anything can happen,
12:52and a teleport kill
12:53is no exception.
12:54Even I don't know
12:55what it does.
12:57You want to find out?
12:59Hey,
12:59at least Coulson
13:00came back to life
13:01for his own series later.
13:03Number 17.
13:04Spider,
13:05Goodfellas.
13:06It was no surprise
13:07to see this poor
13:07young bartender
13:08teased and tormented
13:10by wise guy patron
13:11Tommy DeVito.
13:12Hey, Spider,
13:13on your way over here,
13:14bring me a cut in water, huh?
13:15But a lot more trouble
13:16was afoot
13:17the moment that gun
13:18started waving.
13:19In Goodfellas,
13:19the comedy of Joe Pesci's
13:21wild antics is dark
13:22but still manageable.
13:24You gonna let him get away with that?
13:25You gonna let this f***ing punk
13:27get away with that?
13:27What's the matter?
13:28His murder of Spider,
13:29however,
13:30was a twisted shocker,
13:31even with the awkward silence
13:32that follows Spider's
13:33only attempt to defend himself.
13:35When Tommy DeVito loses it,
13:37his wrath is as sudden
13:38as it is furious,
13:39and the audience
13:40isn't the only one shocked.
13:41Number 16.
13:43Hoban Wash Washburn
13:44Serenity
13:45Fans of the cancelled
13:47cult TV show Firefly
13:48rejoiced at the chance
13:50to catch up
13:50with their beloved characters
13:51in this big screen continuation.
13:53But most enthusiasts
13:55were not expecting
13:55the fate that awaited Wash.
13:57Can you get us down?
13:58I'm gonna have to glide her in.
13:59Will that work?
14:00With a Reaver ship
14:01in hot pursuit,
14:02the ace pilot manages
14:03to save the day
14:04when he lands,
14:05or at least crash lands,
14:07Serenity,
14:07in what seems to be safety.
14:09But he only has
14:10a brief moment to celebrate.
14:11Just as he reaches his zen,
14:13a Reaver spear ruins everything.
14:16Seriously?
14:16Screw you, movies.
14:18Number 15.
14:19Detective Sergeant Jack Vincennes
14:21LA Confidential
14:23Corrupt police
14:24Captain Dudley Smith
14:25offs narcotics
14:26Detective Sergeant Jack Vincennes
14:28in a quick, surprising moment
14:30that you could have missed
14:31if you blinked.
14:31What's going on,
14:32midnight Jack?
14:33I need two minutes, Dudley.
14:35It's rare to see
14:36a death scene come so casually,
14:38but delivering it with coffee
14:39is one creative way
14:40to go about it.
14:41The kill-off
14:41of one of LA Confidential's
14:43protagonists and leads
14:44is disorienting as is,
14:46but that gunshot
14:47was really unexpected.
14:48So, uh,
14:50what does Exley make
14:51of all this?
14:52No, I haven't told him yet.
14:53I just came straight
14:53from the record.
14:56Even if you read
14:57the original novel
14:58before seeing the film,
14:59you'd still be surprised,
15:01because Vincennes
15:01doesn't even die this way.
15:03Number 14.
15:04Detectives Christopher Danson
15:06and P.K. Highsmith,
15:08the other guys.
15:08We couldn't do our job
15:10if it weren't for you guys
15:11doing all the paperwork,
15:12answering the phones,
15:13all that stupid shit
15:13that we don't like to do.
15:14All the gunfights,
15:15all the car chases,
15:16all the sex
15:17we don't want to have
15:18with women,
15:19but we have to
15:19all do
15:21to what you guys do.
15:24And we do it again and again.
15:25Hey, hey, hey, hey,
15:26you shut your face!
15:27The scenes featuring
15:28Detectives Danson,
15:30played by Dwayne Johnson,
15:31and Highsmith,
15:32played by Samuel L. Jackson,
15:34were worth the price of admission
15:35to this 2010 action comedy.
15:37Come on, fellas!
15:38Wednesday night is taco night
15:39at Rikers Island!
15:40Real-life action heroes,
15:42they get the job done,
15:43while leaving massive destruction
15:44in their wake
15:45on every assignment.
15:46Oh!
15:47The second one this week!
15:50Hey, you monkeys!
15:51Stop!
15:52It's no wonder
15:52their colleagues idolize them.
15:54See, they can even leap
15:55from buildings
15:56in a single bound.
15:58Okay, wait,
15:58maybe they're not so good
15:59at the leaping
16:00from buildings thing.
16:01Point proven,
16:02these movie cop hot shots
16:03don't even die by the rules.
16:05Cops still argue to this day
16:07why dancing
16:07and Highsmith jump.
16:09Maybe it was just pride.
16:10Number 13,
16:11Teresa Tracy Mills.
16:13Seven.
16:14It's Tracy,
16:14Tracy Somerset.
16:17Hello.
16:19Very happy to meet you.
16:20In Seven,
16:21homicide detective Somerset Mills
16:23trail a serial killer
16:24through the seven deadly sins
16:25that serve as themes
16:27to each of his grisly murders.
16:28I'm trying to tell you
16:29how much I admire you
16:30and your pretty wife.
16:32The killer confesses
16:33to beheading Mills'
16:34pregnant wife Tracy
16:35out of envy
16:36for the life he lives,
16:37thus goading Mills
16:38to exact the seventh sin
16:40of wrath upon him.
16:41It didn't work out.
16:43So I took a souvenir.
16:46Tracy's death
16:47is so shocking
16:48that seeing evidence
16:49of it on screen
16:50is not necessary.
16:51The audience
16:52and characters
16:53know exactly
16:53what's in that cardboard box
16:55and the tragic reaction
16:56to this information
16:57is the ultimate
16:58psychological horror.
16:59Tell me she's all right!
17:01Is he a murder of a suspect,
17:02David?
17:02No!
17:04Just throw it all away,
17:05you know.
17:05No!
17:06Number 12,
17:07Dick Halloran.
17:08The Shining.
17:09You know that thing
17:10about minorities
17:11always getting killed off
17:12in movies?
17:12Well,
17:13Dick Halloran
17:13is the original.
17:15Without Dick,
17:15we wouldn't even know
17:16what The Shining is.
17:17I think a lot of things
17:19happened right here
17:20in this particular hotel
17:22over the years.
17:25And not all of them
17:26was good.
17:26But explaining psychic powers
17:28to Danny Torrance
17:29and the audience
17:30is all he's good for,
17:31apparently.
17:32After Danny's dad
17:33loses his marbles
17:34in the Overlook Hotel,
17:35Halloran races back
17:36from Florida
17:37to save the day,
17:38alerted by Danny's Shining.
17:40Why else would they have
17:41that whole subplot
17:42in the movie, right?
17:43Well,
17:43don't look at us for answers
17:44because Halloran's rescue,
17:46it doesn't go so well.
17:47Number 11.
17:57Julianne Taylor
17:57Children of Men
17:59Even if you'd read the book
18:00this was based on,
18:01you would have been surprised
18:02because it's completely different.
18:04Yeah, well,
18:05that's the world
18:05we live in now, isn't it?
18:06When you see someone
18:07like Julianne Moore
18:08in a trailer,
18:09you presume she's going
18:10to serve an important
18:11purpose in the film.
18:12Look out!
18:14We guess her function here
18:15is to show how hopeless
18:16the world can become
18:17after 18 years of infertility,
18:19as she's unceremoniously offed
18:21while trying to escape an ambush.
18:23This death is even more unexpected
18:24given her role
18:25as the protagonist's
18:26estranged wife.
18:27What,
18:28no reconciliation?
18:29Sorry, Theo,
18:30you'll have to settle
18:31for saving humanity.
18:32Number 10.
18:33Black Widow,
18:34Avengers Endgame.
18:35In order to take the stone,
18:37you must lose
18:38that which you love.
18:40When Barton and Romanoff
18:41sought the Soul Stone
18:42on Vormir,
18:43audiences were dragged
18:44into a tense game
18:45of who would bite the dust.
18:46Both fought to be
18:47the sacrifice required
18:48to obtain the stone
18:49and help save
18:50half of humanity.
18:51What,
18:52you think I want to do it?
18:54I'm trying to save your life,
18:55you idiot.
18:56Yeah,
18:56well,
18:56I don't want you to.
18:57What's that?
18:58With a Black Widow
18:59standalone film already in the works
19:01when Endgame hit cinemas,
19:02you could have been forgiven
19:03for betting that Hawkeye
19:05would be the one
19:05to take a dive.
19:06Turns out Black Widow
19:07had the edge here
19:08and successfully got the upper
19:10or lower hand.
19:19Her death scene
19:20was both shocking
19:21and a total tearjerker.
19:24Number 9.
19:25Chad Feldheimer,
19:26Burn After Reading.
19:27Brad Pitt is no stranger
19:29to unexpected movie deaths.
19:31Between playing
19:31What's in the Box
19:32with John Doe
19:33or ping-ponging between cars
19:35after he's introduced
19:36in Meet Joe Black,
19:37he has shocked us before.
19:39But it's the time
19:39his buddy Clooney
19:40kills him
19:41that gets us the most.
19:42Naturally,
19:43it's an accident,
19:44but that only makes it
19:45all the more shocking.
19:46Guess this is what happens
19:47when you hide
19:47in a U.S. Marshall's wardrobe.
20:01No matter what happens,
20:03this will always be the movie
20:04where Brad Pitt
20:05gets shot in the face.
20:07Number 8.
20:08Calvin J. Candy,
20:09Django Unchained.
20:10It's surprising enough
20:11that a handshake
20:12can be a source
20:13of such dread
20:14and conflict
20:14after all the ghastly things
20:16the characters
20:16have suffered through
20:17in Django Unchained.
20:18It's a custom here
20:20in the South.
20:21Once a business deal
20:22has concluded
20:23that the two parties
20:24shake hands.
20:26But not even
20:27the most cinema-savvy
20:28film critic
20:28can claim they foretold
20:30the death
20:30of Calvin Candy here.
20:32It was literally
20:32a trick up
20:33Dr. King Schultz's sleeve.
20:35If you insist.
20:42Mind you,
20:42as unexpected as it was,
20:44it's also supremely satisfying.
20:46Of course,
20:47when it comes to
20:47shocking deaths
20:48and violence,
20:49if there's anything
20:50to expect of director
20:51Quentin Tarantino,
20:52it's the unexpected.
20:54Number 7.
20:55Vincent Vega,
20:56Pulp Fiction.
20:57John Travolta
20:58is on both ends
20:58of unexpected deaths
20:59in this Tarantino
21:00mind-bender.
21:01The first comes
21:02when he and fellow
21:03hitman Sam Jackson
21:04are feuding
21:05about divine intervention
21:06when...
21:07Oh man,
21:07I shot Marvin in the face.
21:09Why the f***
21:09did you do that?
21:10I didn't mean
21:10the dude was an accident.
21:11Of course,
21:12Vincent Vega's own
21:13untimely demise
21:14is also a WTF moment.
21:16Considering he's
21:17a main character
21:18and there's still
21:19an hour in the movie
21:20to go.
21:20Hey,
21:21we guess there's
21:21a lesson here
21:22about waltzing in
21:23and using another man's toilet.
21:24Don't worry though,
21:25since the movie
21:26isn't told in order,
21:27Vincent is back
21:28pretty soon.
21:29Number 6.
21:30Marion Crane,
21:31Psycho.
21:32Today's generations
21:33have seen this death scene
21:34so many times,
21:35it's really not
21:36that shocking anymore.
21:37You know,
21:37knife,
21:38violins,
21:39shower curtain,
21:40screaming,
21:40dead.
21:41But consider this,
21:42it was 1960
21:43and Hitchcock's movie
21:44was being marketed
21:45on the strength
21:45of his famous star,
21:47Janet Leigh.
21:53Then you actually
21:54get to the theater
21:54and after tons of buildup,
21:56she gets killed
21:56in the shower
21:57halfway through.
21:58The movie then
22:04follows private investigator
22:06Milton Arbogast
22:07as he puts together
22:08the pieces.
22:09Quite the switcheroo,
22:10we'd say.
22:11Number 5.
22:12Charlie,
22:13Hereditary.
22:14When the trailer
22:15for Ari Aster's
22:16horror film
22:16Hereditary came out,
22:18it seemed clear
22:18that this was another movie
22:20about a creepy kid
22:20who freaks out her family
22:21and, of course,
22:23audiences.
22:24And to an extent,
22:25that's true.
22:26Are you okay?
22:28It's hard to breathe.
22:30Except, of course,
22:31that the kid in question,
22:32Charlie,
22:33who featured prominently
22:34in the trailers,
22:34is killed off
22:35in the first 30 minutes
22:36of the film.
22:41What's even more shocking
22:42is the manner
22:43of her death.
22:44In a movie
22:44about demonic possession,
22:46you'd probably have
22:46put your money
22:47on something supernatural
22:48and spectacular.
22:49If you bet
22:50decapitation
22:50by telephone pole,
22:52well,
22:52you're a genius.
22:54Number 4.
22:55Bill Murray.
22:56Zombieland.
22:57Leave it to Bill Murray
22:58or a subtle parody
22:59of his unaffected self
23:00to dress up as a zombie
23:01so that he could live
23:02a normal,
23:03quiet golfer's life
23:04among the infected populace.
23:06Bill Murray,
23:07you're a zombie?
23:14I'm on fire!
23:15It's a funny way
23:16to be meta
23:16with his celebrity,
23:17made even funnier
23:18when he tries to play
23:19a prank on
23:20Jesse Eisenberg's
23:21Columbus,
23:21who shoots him to death
23:22over the misunderstanding.
23:23It's Bill Murray after all.
23:29Not a movie character,
23:29but a real person.
23:31So he can't die,
23:32can he?
23:32Surprise!
23:33He can.
23:34If it means anything now,
23:35I am so sorry.
23:37It's just instinctive.
23:39It was my bad.
23:41I was never a very good
23:42practical joker.
23:43Number 3.
23:44Russell Franklin.
23:45Deep Blue Sea.
23:46Nobody delivers angry monologues
23:48like Samuel L. Jackson.
23:50But it turns out,
23:51nobody plays the angry guy
23:52who gets dismembered
23:53by toothy animals
23:54like him either.
23:55Now you've seen
23:56how bad things can get
23:57and how quick
23:59they can get that way.
24:00Well,
24:01they can get a whole lot worse.
24:03Just as the others
24:04are giving way
24:04to panic and despair
24:05in this sci-fi horror flick,
24:07Jackson's character,
24:08corporate executive
24:09Russell Franklin,
24:10begins an inspirational speech.
24:12If you just believe
24:14in yourself, right?
24:15Well,
24:15in the middle of his monologue
24:17as he insists
24:18that he and the others
24:18are not going to die,
24:19he dies.
24:23Considering he was
24:24the movie's biggest star,
24:25this was something
24:26no one saw coming.
24:28Number 2.
24:29Billy Costigan.
24:30The Departed.
24:31Scorsese's tale
24:32of two moles,
24:33one working for the Irish mob
24:35and one for the police,
24:36culminates in a tense scene
24:37that seems set
24:38to give Leonardo DiCaprio's
24:40Billy Costigan a win.
24:41You erased me, huh?
24:42Oh yeah,
24:42go ahead,
24:42shoot a cop,
24:43Einstein.
24:44He has Matt Damon's
24:45Colin Sullivan at gunpoint
24:46and their one elevator ride away
24:48from being out of the undercover business
24:50once and for all.
24:51But it's not Matt Damon
24:52who buys the farm.
24:53The door opens
24:54and Leo's brains go flying.
24:56Turns out,
24:57Sullivan wasn't the only mole
24:58who was really working for the mob.
25:00Of course,
25:00that doesn't mean
25:01Sullivan gets away with it.

25:19Number 1.
25:20Dr. Malcolm Crowe.
25:21The Sixth Sense.
25:22It's one of the most iconic
25:24twist endings in cinema.
25:25M. Night Shyamalan's
25:26supernatural thriller fooled us all,
25:28at least provided you hadn't
25:30had the ending spoiled in advance.
25:32Let me try.
25:34You just give me a chance.
25:35Right at the start of the movie,
25:36Bruce Willis' character,
25:38child psychologist Malcolm Crowe,
25:40survives a gunshot wound.
25:42Or so it seems.
25:43I see dead people.
25:45As we find out later, though,
25:47he was actually dead
25:48for the rest of the film,
25:49even while playing therapist
25:50to his little ghost whisperer friend.
25:52They don't know they're dead.
25:54If you didn't have goosebumps
25:55watching Crowe put it all together,
25:57are you even alive?
25:58I think I'm okay, really.
25:59I think it just went
26:00did we forget another
26:03distressing movie death?

26:07I know.
