02:29Mr. Holmes, right?
02:31Yes, that's right. Is that for him?
02:32Yes, sir.
02:33All right, then I'll take him. Thank you.
02:34It's the Queen Bee, wasn't it?
02:57Really?
02:57What did you say?
03:12I didn't say anything.
03:15Oh, I thought you said something.
03:17No.
03:19Oh.
03:22What did you say?
03:23I didn't say anything.
03:26No, I thought you said something.
03:28No.
03:30No.
03:30You know, Watson, the interesting thing about the queen bee is that she seldom leaves the hive
03:36and is generally followed and protected by the other bees.
03:39You just arrived.
04:02The messenger said it was for you.
04:04What is it?
04:15Well, it's obvious, isn't it?
04:18Yes.
04:19Holmes, you never told me.
04:21Told you what?
04:22Well, I haven't got one.
04:26Well, I hadn't until now.
04:29Well, where did this come from?
04:30I don't know.
04:32I was in there.
04:35Well, what do we do now?
04:37Well, you're the doctor.
04:39Don't you know?
04:41I'm not that kind of a doctor.
04:44Oh, I see.
04:45Well, shall we examine the matter a little more closely?
04:51Can you pick it up?
04:54Do you mean, am I strong enough?
04:56No, no, no.
04:56I mean, do you know how?
04:58There's a sort of special way of handling these things, isn't there?
05:02Nothing special about it at all.
05:03You just pick it up.
05:06Oh, just pick it up, eh?
05:09Oh, well, I'll try.
05:12I don't know.
05:16Well, Watson, there's nothing to it at all.
05:19I told you.
05:20He's a good-looking chap, isn't he?
05:25Sing it a lullaby.
05:27What?
05:28Lullaby.
05:30Oh, yes, yes, yes.
05:33Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves.
05:38Britons never, never, never will be slaves.
05:43He doesn't like that.
05:45He's crying.
05:47I can hear him.
05:48So what do we do now?
05:51Perhaps he's hungry.
05:53Yes, of course, of course, he's hungry.
05:55Well, make him a cup of tea, Watson.
05:57Babies don't drink tea.
05:58They drink milk.
06:00Oh, do they?
06:00Oh, well, then, make him some milk.
06:04Perhaps that's the mother.
06:14Not the mother.
06:15What's that?
06:19It's a baby.
06:21Oh, so it is.
06:22Is it yours?
06:23Certainly not.
06:25Well, he's crying.
06:27Oh, really?
06:29Now, we've been able to reduce that without the aid of Scotland Yard.
06:33Oh, you know me.
06:33I'll stop him crying.
06:34Oh, yes, yes.
06:38The little mother.
06:40All right.
06:40Why, he stops.
06:48So he has.
06:49He has stopped.
06:51But he likes you.
06:53Well, I'll be darned.
06:55Oh, no.
06:57Please, Lestrade.
06:58No profanity in front of the child.
07:00Who does it belong to?
07:03It came in a basket.
07:04Babies don't come in baskets, Holmes.
07:08They've got to belong to someone.
07:11Well, maybe there's a nurse.
07:17There is.
07:19It's addressed to you.
07:19Well, dear Mr. Holmes, please keep Tony for me.
07:26I will contact you as soon as I can.
07:29Signed, Madame Henri Durand.
07:31Madame Durand?
07:33Mean anything to you, Lestrade?
07:35Well, yes.
07:35That's why I'm here.
07:37I wanted to talk to you about him.
07:38You mean her?
07:40No, I mean him.
07:42Him?
07:43No, not him.
07:44His father, Dr. Henri Durand.
07:47Dr. Henri Durand.
07:48Oh, yes, yes.
07:50You mean the young French inventor?
07:52Yes, that's right.
07:53This must be his son.
07:55Dr. Durand was kidnapped yesterday morning,
07:58just as he was leaving the Admiralty.
07:59I didn't read anything about that in the papers.
08:02No, it's been a very well-guarded secret.
08:04Hardly anybody knew Dr. Durand was in this country.
08:07Well, then it might be safe to assume for the moment
08:09that Madame Durand learned the whereabouts of her husband,
08:12went after him,
08:13and fearing for the child,
08:14sent him here in our safe kingdom.
08:15Mm-hmm.
08:16Have you any need at all
08:18as to who could possibly have kidnapped, Dr. Durand?
08:20Well, at the moment, none at all.
08:22Where do they stay in the street?
08:24At a mansion at the Admiralty Leavendom,
08:26just up Barclay Square.
08:28Well, then I think that should be our first call.
08:30Let's go.
08:31No, no, no.
08:33Someone has to mind the baby, Watson.
08:36Mind the baby?
08:38Yes.
08:39Me?
08:40Who else?
08:43Well, I don't know.
08:44Couldn't we find a nursemaid?
08:46Do you know any nursemaid?
08:49Well, I haven't had much use for her lately.
08:52And I think it would be wiser
08:53if no one knew that the child were here
08:55for the time being, Watson.
08:56Madame Durand obviously had reason
08:58to believe that his safety was threatened.
09:01Yeah.
09:05Hey, he's starting to cry.
09:07Yes, we can hear that.
09:09Well, sing him a lullaby.
09:11Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the way.
09:17Britain!
09:18That doesn't sound like a lullaby to me.
09:20Well, you think of one.
09:22It's been a long time since anybody sang me a lullaby.
09:25What's up is when we've got you?
09:32A lullaby.
09:32A lullaby.
09:33An lullaby.
09:33Well, I'd say that.
09:34Run.
09:34A lullaby.
09:35A lullaby.
09:35A lullaby.
09:35A lullaby.
09:36A lullaby.
09:37A lullaby.
09:37A lullaby.
09:38A lullaby.
09:40of course our trouble is we're far too many suspects every country in the world would like
09:51to lay its hands in this invention or dr. durand tell me lestrade what is the invention exactly
09:57well it's a it's a sort of a ship that sails underwater i don't understand it myself but
10:04they say that any country that has it would control the seas in the event of war
10:09i see then i presume that dr durand's presence in this country has something to do with his
10:14invention oh more than that yes his being here is part of a secret naval treaty between france and
10:20britain has anybody ever tried to contact this dr durand before to your knowledge no not that we
10:27know of things are completely blank wall
10:32when did you return from your land it was about an hour and a half ago sir where did madame send
10:43you to the chemist sir to pick out some things for the baby how long were you gone half an hour at the
10:48master had anyone called on madame durand prior to your departure to the chemist no sir we've had
10:55no callers at the house at all today sir not even a messenger perhaps ah yes sir there had been a
11:01message who delivered it a man uniformed no sir he wore a dark suit and was about um 40 years of age
11:09did he wait for a reply to his message no sir he left immediately he left immediately yes sir
11:15you're quite sure he didn't wait for a reply to his note no sir he didn't
11:19something wrong sir come astrayed
11:22well back to baker street we've overlooked the most obvious danger danger to whom
11:27holmes holmes
11:30holmes will you please stop long enough to explain why we're racing like this
11:40quick industry give me a hand
11:46careful now get him on the couch
11:49there's blood in his head yes i know i've been a fool
11:52they came in i i i know watson don't try and talk i know what happened i i i should have known it was
11:59going to happen what did happen here get his medical cases in his room
12:02holmes they maybe they struck me on the back of the head i it's all right watson don't try to
12:08look here
12:10holmes it's all right watson it's all right they got him got who the child they've taken the child
12:21don't worry watson we'll get him back but but you don't even know where he is
12:26that's true but i know how i can find him watson i know how i can find him
12:30turn to the case of the baker street nursemaids
12:41the problem was an obvious one
12:44dr durand had been kidnapped
12:47and now his child
12:49there was no question
12:51that with his sons and wife's safety threatened
12:53the poor man could be made to divulge the secret
12:56that both france and england were trying to guard
13:00holmes worked with feverish haste for some lead some clue
13:04that would tell us which one of the many possible foreign powers
13:08was responsible for this outrage
13:11his only aid was a scrap of paper
13:14the paper that accompanied the child
13:17yeah but how can you be sure
13:20well madame durand received the note from the messenger
13:23and although she followed its instructions
13:25she feared the life of her child so she brought him here
13:28you can see this piece of paper has been torn from a much larger sheet
13:31and the paper is neither english nor french
13:34and you expect to be able to tell from
13:37all this exactly where the paper was made
13:40certainly writing paper is almost as distinctive as writing itself
13:43its contents
13:44method of manufacture and construction
13:47differ enormously from country to country
13:49now watch this
13:50that's it
13:58what's it
13:59yes what does it mean
14:01there are only three embassies in london who'd use such a paper
14:04it now only remains to investigate each one
14:07now that's the kind of job i can do
14:10i'll have men deployed round each of the embassies
14:12no one will be allowed to enter or leave until
14:14all right i'll take it
14:19excuse me dr watson but i must speak to mr holmes immediately sir
14:27come in
14:28is that for me
14:30yes sir it is
14:31it was delivered to the house by the same man
14:33as delivered the last message to madame durand
14:34he asked me to deliver it to you immediately sir
14:36dear mr holmes
14:53your entrance into this situation was for me
14:57an unexpected development
14:59now that it has occurred however
15:02i'm certain that you will by some method
15:04discover the whereabouts of my guests
15:09any attempt to free them at this time would be for them disastrous
15:13i offer this alternative
15:16when dr durand has given me the information i ask of him
15:21he and his family will be left unharmed
15:24i will leave england immediately thereafter
15:27their fate now rests in your hands
15:30count tenno
15:33now we know which one of the three
15:36i can surround the house close out the entire area
15:39he says he'll kill dr durand if that happens
15:42and i believe he will
15:44but the man must be an absolute fanatic
15:47yes he is
15:49what do we do now
15:51we think
15:58you delivered the message to the butler
16:05yes your captain
16:06and then as you instructed i waited and watched
16:09the butler left the house in a few minutes and proceeded directly to 221 b beger street
16:14good
16:15good
16:16then holmes has the message
16:18and i believe it's wise enough to know that i'm not bluffing
16:21they will try nothing for the present
16:23but they will attempt to stop us at the border
16:25your departure by boat has been arranged your excellency
16:28it will arrive at the appointed place on the coast at 7 30 tomorrow morning
16:32and we will have dr durand secret long before then
16:36you may go
17:02mr sherlock holmes and dr watson to see you your excellency
17:16gentlemen
17:19yes sir
17:20sir sherlock holmes and dr john watson
17:28come in gentlemen
17:32lawrence
17:33yes your excellency
17:34please inform every man in the house that mr holmes and dr watson are here
17:39tell them that if they should hear this bell
17:42they are to follow exactly the emergency instructions i've given them
17:46yes your excellency every man will be alerted
17:49now won't you be seated gentlemen
17:52thank you
17:54tell me what sort of a trick do you think we try to prove
17:57to play on you count tenor
17:59i could think of a few but i'm afraid sherlock holmes could think of a few more
18:04my men are extremely competent
18:07i have no doubt they are count
18:09and now the purpose of your visit gentlemen
18:13simply stated we wish the safe return of mr and mrs durand and their child
18:18stated simply enough
18:20to begin with of course they are not here
18:23you seem to doubt my word dr watson
18:33it would appear so wouldn't it count
18:35very clever dr watson
18:40well well it's usually not too difficult to prove a liar a liar
18:47and now the purpose of your visit gentlemen
18:53to make you an offer shall we say count
18:55what kind of offer mr holmes
18:57a guarantee of safe passage out of england
19:02for the safe return of the durand family
19:05i believe i can guarantee my own safe passage out of england
19:09every port every exit will be blocked by the authorities
19:12the authorities
19:14the authorities would attempt to block every port and exit
19:17but we'll have to wait to see if they can succeed
19:20the police can always force their way into this house you know count
19:24and i can pull this bell cord
19:27dr durand will be killed immediately and automatically in either case
19:31yes but what assurance have we that you won't kill dr durand anyway
19:34in order to stop other countries getting it secret
19:37i'm afraid you will have to wait to see about that too dr watson
19:41then i gather that we can't come to an agreement with you count
19:45i'm surprised at your knave team mr holmes
19:49you have nothing to offer me
19:51you should have known that
19:53lawrence
19:55the gentlemen are leaving now
19:59see them out
20:01and bolt the door very carefully behind them
20:22oh
20:23before we leave
20:24might i ask
20:25just by way of inquiry
20:26of course
20:27if there was any possibility of bribing you
20:30that's what i thought
20:32that's what i thought
20:33that's what i thought too
20:34hmm
20:35oh
20:38well
20:40that's the first part of the plan
20:45we're in
20:46before we do anything else
20:47we put that communication cord out of action
20:49that's got to be difficult
20:50yes
20:51if it were easy i wouldn't be in a cold sweat now
20:55oh i thought i was the only one
20:57i thought i was going to go over in the field
20:59i think
21:00we are getting to get to be the best
21:01thank you
21:03i think
21:04and i think
21:05i think
21:06that would be the image i think
21:07that is

21:22And without a sound, next step. Upstairs.
21:52Upstairs.
22:22Bad homes, not bad at all. My hand hurts.
22:27Oh, well look, you must keep your wrists stiff and swing from the shoulder.
22:32Wrists stiff and swing from the shoulder, yes. That's right.
22:37Look, I'll show you with me. Yes.
22:40Now, wrist stiff, swing from the shoulder.
22:45Yes.
22:50You know, you're a little lifeless kind of work.
22:52Oh, nonsense, nonsense. It's just a matter of technique.
22:54Mm-hmm. Well, let's go upstairs and get a bit more practice.
22:56Yes, let's.
22:57Yes, let's.
22:59Yes.
23:00Yes, let's go upstairs.
23:02Yes.

23:09Yes.
23:10She says the baby needs something to eat.
23:27Go ask Lorenz if it's all right.
23:30I'm not supposed to leave my post.
23:32Don't leave.
23:34Call him.
23:40Now, Mr. Lorenz, I'll show you.
23:53All right.
23:54Thought you were going to get away with it, didn't you?
23:56Just keep your hands up and walk straight ahead.
24:00Stop where you are.
24:02Turn around and face the room.
24:04Put your hands down.
24:10Yes, I see what you mean now.
24:18Now, fast!
24:20Mr. Holmes, I don't know what to say.
24:24We had given up hope.
24:25Well, we did the best we could, Madame Duro.
24:28It was magnificent, gentlemen.
24:29My government and I'm certain yours will be eternally grateful.
24:33You're Dr. Watson, are you not?
24:34Yes, I am.
24:35Gratitude is beyond words at a moment like this.
24:38Holmes.
24:39Watson.
24:40Is everything all right?
24:42Yes, everything's absolutely under control.
24:44Thanks, Neil.
24:45Oh, I didn't do anything.
24:47That's what I mean.
24:49Well, I suppose everybody's quite safe.
24:52Yes, thank you, Lestrade.
24:53Everyone, including the youngest member of the family.
24:56Yes.
24:57She's hungry, but she's safe.
24:59Oh, well, we can get her something to...
25:00Her?
25:03Yes.
25:05But it's a he.
25:07No, her.
25:08It's a he?
25:09Her, the name is Tony, isn't it?
25:12Yes.
25:13But she's a she.
25:14Hmm.
25:15I say, Watson, it seems we were entertaining a young lady.
25:18Perfect disguise, though, isn't it?
25:20Mm-hmm.
25:21I say, Watson, it seems we were entertaining a young lady.
25:22I say, Watson, it seems we were entertaining a young lady.
25:23I say, Watson, it seems we were entertaining a young lady.
25:24I say, Watson, it seems we were entertaining a young lady.
25:25I say, Watson, it seems we were entertaining a young lady.
25:26I say, Watson, it seems we were entertaining a young lady.
