Rob Gregson discusses what could be expected from mandatory training camp in July as the Pittsburgh Steeler's add Aaron Rodgers to the roster
Transcript
00:00It's finally arrived. The Pittsburgh Sears 2025 mandatory minicamp is here and their quarterback Aaron Rodgers is in place.
00:08The team believes that this is their best shot at winning a Super Bowl.
00:11And today we're going to discuss three big predictions to look for ahead of Tuesday through Thursday in Pittsburgh.
00:21It all starts with Aaron Rodgers.
00:23I believe that by the time Thursday comes around, the team wraps everything up and they go on summer vacation.
00:29All you're going to hear about is how great Aaron Rodgers looks.
00:33And quite frankly, he should look that great.
00:35I don't care if he's 41, 51 or 61 years old.
00:38As long as he still has a hand that can grip a football, he should look phenomenal in shorts and a t-shirt.
00:45And that's exactly what mandatory minicamp will be.
00:47We're talking about Aaron Rodgers getting out there with his guys, throwing the football around, maneuvering the pocket a little bit and just looking like his old self.
00:55That's what you're going to hear.
00:56Will that parlay itself into a good regular season, one where the Steelers then go to the postseason and win a playoff game or a Super Bowl?
01:06That remains to be seen.
01:07But I expect a strong start to the Pittsburgh Steelers mandatory minicamp from Aaron Rodgers.
01:13After that, let's get to who he's throwing the ball to.
01:16That would be DK Metcalf.
01:17I fully expect DK Metcalf to not only show up to mandatory minicamp, but to show out.
01:24Obviously, he decided to stay away the last couple of weeks with voluntary OTAs.
01:28With the quarterback now in place and with the fact that he could be fined if he misses mandatory minicamp, I expect him to be there.
01:35I expect people to be wowed by DK Metcalf.
01:38I mean, we're talking about one of the most physically dominant wide receivers in the entire National Football League.
01:43He's going to look like a supercharged George Pickens, both physically and figuratively, given his physique and his play style.
01:51After that, let's get to what everyone wants to know about, which is TJ Watt.
01:56But I really don't see a world in which TJ Watt shows up to mandatory minicamp without a new contract.
02:02I mean, God forbid something happens to him the same way it did to Donald Parham Jr. last week, and he has a non-contact injury.
02:09His ability to earn a contract extension then goes out the window.
02:13Obviously, he's playing on the last year of his deal heading into 2025, and that is the entire reason as to why he wants an extension.
02:21So would you like the face of your franchise to be there?
02:24Yes.
02:24Will he be fined if he doesn't show up?
02:27Yes.
02:27Is it a great look?
02:29No.
02:29But what the Steelers actually have to piggyback off of is the fact that Aaron Rodgers is going to be in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform.
02:37That is going to take all of the sizzle out of what would normally be called a distraction in a normal offseason.
02:44But as we know, with the Pittsburgh Steelers, this offseason has been anything but normal.
02:49So those are my three predictions for Steelers mandatory minicamp.
02:52DJ Watt holds out unless a new deal is done.
02:56DK Metcalf shows up and shows out, and Aaron Rodgers is labeled as looking like his old self.
03:02It'll be Tuesday through Thursday in Pittsburgh, and it all wraps up a busy offseason ahead of training camp at the end of July.
03:13Thank you very much.
