00:00There's a lot of discussion about the Vikings trading for a former all-pro cornerback,
00:04but is it really the right move? It's a very complicated situation.
00:11The Minnesota Vikings are in a position to, well, let's just be real about it. Just cut to the
00:17point. It's the Super Bowl window. They can make an all-in move right now and nobody would bat an
00:23eye. They also could stay patient and really let that growth and development come into play and
00:29continue to make much more calculated moves. One that a lot of people are projecting that they
00:35could make is trading for Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey himself is quite the
00:42interesting player. When you take a look at Ramsey, he's a multi-time pro bowler, multi-time
00:48all-pro, but he's also on the wrong side of 30 and just entering into a three-year $72 million
00:54contract. So what are you getting talent-wise for the price that you're going to have to pay?
01:00Now, if you're paying a guy like Sauce Gardner or Derek Stingley Jr., and you're paying them top
01:04of the market value, okay, that's fine. Because when you look at those guys, they're young and
01:11they can grow with that contract. You're paying for future. With a guy like Jalen Ramsey, you're
01:19paying for the past and you're paying for now. You're not paying for the future. And I think
01:23that's where this discussion really lies. So let's just kind of break down the nuts and bolts really
01:28quick. If you trade for Ramsey, you're probably going to have to give up a fourth or a fifth round
01:32pick per Albert Breer, and you're going to have to absorb a hefty amount of the contract that he has,
01:38which if you were to trade for him, you would absorb $21 million in cap this season. Not to mention,
01:44you have everything in the future. Now, you can cut him after one year, but if you're making a
01:50trade for him, why would you cut him after a year? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense either.
01:54So from the Vikings perspective, is adding a cornerback who's about to turn 31 years old
01:59and already on the downslope of his career? Because he's certainly not trending upward.
02:04The right move for a Super Bowl window? One, you don't have a fourth round pick in 2025. Two,
02:09you don't have a lot of cap space right now. You're projected to be at least $50 million over
02:16the cap as of this moment. And right now, you only have about $5 million in fluid cap space after
02:23you consider the money you have to set aside for in-season moves and the practice squad.
02:29So is Ramsey really the smart move? Now, adding a cornerback certainly is. You have a lot of question
02:34marks after Byron Murphy Jr., and those question marks can come back to bite you. We've seen
02:38cornerback be a problem, problem position for the Minnesota Vikings. But is giving up that
02:46kind of capital and cash for Ramsey the right one? I'm very skeptical. Now, it's inarguable
02:55that Brian Flores could probably get the max out of him. But do you want to trade draft capital
03:01and then also pay that salary? I don't. I'm good. Use that money elsewhere. Find somebody
03:12at the trade deadline on a team that's just kaput and see if you can get somebody for a fifth round
03:18pick and then use that for that win-out window. I'm Tyler Fornance with A to Z Sports. Skull Vikings.
