00:00It's Wild 94.1, Wild 94.1.com. Joey Franchise here on You Down.
00:04And I'm a big fan of this guy's music.
00:06Actually, somebody from the label introduced me to the song Drink.
00:11And the minute I heard it, I'm like, yo, this is like next level.
00:15I don't know what to call it.
00:16Like, it felt like a Bruno Mars record, like a hybrid Bruno Mars, like Justin Bieber kind of vibe.
00:22Not like, never say never Justin Bieber, like purpose Justin Bieber.
00:26You feel me?
00:27Like some Timberlake vibe.
00:29But what drew me to it is the fact that he's Latino, so I'm hyped too.
00:32Because, you know, I'm Puerto Rican, Dominican, Colombia, Joey Franchise, and my man D. Munoz right here.
00:38Yes, sir.
00:38What's going on, my G?
00:39How you feeling?
00:40Not bad, bro.
00:41What's up?
00:41Can I look at you?
00:42You look at this one.
00:42Yeah, we're here.
00:43Okay, cool.
00:44So tell me, man, how's this run been, son?
00:47Like, you got, you know, a lot of music coming out.
00:49You got an EP out in the streets right now?
00:51It's been cool.
00:52You know, a lot of moving around, going from state to state.
00:56A lot of naps in the car, waking up tired.
00:58Yo, take advantage of them naps, bro.
01:00You know what it is.
01:01When I take the nap, I wake up so tired.
01:04So it's like, should I even take a nap?
01:06Because, like, when I get to the spot, it's like, man, I don't feel like nothing.
01:10It's not good.
01:11The interesting point is you probably took a nap before you came here.
01:13I definitely did.
01:14I probably took a, I probably did that, and I'm not used to waking up early.
01:18So I did, I usually do, when I wake up, I set it for like 9 o'clock, like 9 in the morning
01:24or something, or 8.45, I should say.
01:26And then my alarm goes off, and then I just say, I got time to take a little extra nap.
01:29Bam.
01:30I take that.
01:3110-minute power.
01:32Those wake up extremely tired.
01:34It's like, damn.
01:36I was like a tease.
01:37But I'm trying to tell you, man, like, when we were talking off the camera, like, you
01:40know, I think we got to introduce you to coffee, bro.
01:42I think it was on camera, and I'm going to say on camera, I'm good on the coffee.
01:46I'm saying we got that Bustelo in the back, you know what I mean?
01:48You're like, come on, bro, give me a little espresso shot, espresso shot of something.
01:53But tell me, man, you got moments out of the EP.
01:55But first, I want to backtrack a little bit.
01:57Tell me how this all started, because it all happened just like, not really on accident,
02:01but it was just being playful on an app?
02:05Yeah, so there was a Voxer app.
02:09I remember Voxer, yeah.
02:10Okay, cool, cool.
02:11I used to talk to my boys all the time on that.
02:14Not a lot of people remember it.
02:15I think it was a Spanish thing.
02:16I knew a lot of Spanish cats that have Voxer, don't you?
02:19You already know the Voxers.
02:21Stick together.
02:23So yeah, this Voxer app, it was basically like a walkie-talkie app where you could send
02:26like voice memos.
02:28You know what it was, just explaining it.
02:31And I was in there with like 12 of my friends, and I sent a voice memo of me singing.
02:36I was just bored, and I said, you know what, I'm going to be funny.
02:39I was just being funny.
02:41And they were like, you know, you actually got something there.
02:45Like, what do you, you know, why don't you try singing?
02:49And that whole night, it didn't sit with me.
02:50I was just like, man, they lying to me, you know, whatever.
02:53And then the next morning, or like a few days later, I started recording myself.
02:58I did like 20 takes of me singing Chris Brown's Excuse Me Miss.
03:03Yeah.
03:03And then I posted my first cover on Instagram, got a couple comments, and I was just like,
03:09all right, I'll try it.
03:11And then for like the first two years, it was just like a fun thing.
03:14You know, how can I make a fun song that people would like?
03:18Like, and then like two years down the line, I went viral on Instagram.
03:23That was my first time going viral.
03:25And I started gaining a fan base, so I was just like, you know what, I'm going to take
03:29it real serious now.
03:31And then it went from a fun thing to, you know, still being fun.
03:34Like, I started falling in love with the whole music stuff.
03:36But now it's like, you know, I'm trying to make this my job.
03:39Yeah.
03:40And I started going harder with it.
03:42Taking it to the next level.
03:43I respect that.
03:43How important was like social media, or is social media in what you do and just the
03:48music business all together?
03:49Because I feel like places like Instagram and TikTok is where we're breaking music.
03:53I think a few years ago was SoundCloud.
03:56Yeah.
03:56And now it's just straight up social media.
03:58TikTok.
03:59They trying to get me to get on TikTok.
04:01I just started it, but I'm like, I don't really like it.
04:04Yeah.
04:04It's like Vine with extra, with more time.
04:07There's just so much weird stuff that goes on on that app, I feel like.
04:10Like so many weird videos that I see.
04:12But I'm going to get on it.
04:13I just got on it.
04:14Yeah.
04:15Posted a couple videos.
04:16They doing okay.
04:17But social media in general, I feel like that's the key now.
04:21Like a lot of people, they'll ask me like, yo, how do you, yo, get on Instagram.
04:25Yeah.
04:26Post some dope stuff.
04:27And, you know, see what happens or if you have the connections, honestly.
04:32And what influenced you?
04:33I know, you know, you used Chris Brown as like an anchor to kind of, you know, get your
04:38way started with, you know, doing the cover thing.
04:40But who also was kind of intricate in helping you hone your style and somebody you really
04:46looked up to?
04:48Chris Brown, Drake, growing up.
04:50And then as soon as Bryson Tiller came out, like he's my, like that's my favorite artist.
04:55Man, that trap's so, bro, to this day.
04:56Yo.
04:57That's a, that's a, that's a timeless album.
05:00You got a long drive.
05:01You just put that album on.
05:02And you listen to it from front to back.
05:05Don't got to skip a record.
05:06But, um, yeah, Bryson Tiller, that's my favorite artist right now.
05:11Listening to me growing up, Kendrick, J. Cole, all those artists.
05:16And you're from Jersey, right?
05:17Jersey.
05:18So, you know, I'm from Connecticut, Tri-State, you know what I'm saying?
05:22Gang gang.
05:22Yeah.
05:22Um, so, growing up there and, you know, living in a, in a, in a Latin household, uh, were
05:30you also, are you bilingual?
05:33Yeah.
05:33Well, yeah, you got Spanish records on the Moments album.
05:35But, um, was there anybody that, like, like your mom or anything like that, like that maybe
05:39pushed you to want to do like more of a Latin thing or anything?
05:42Were they acceptive of your new venture into R&B?
05:46Because I know how parents can get sometimes.
05:47Yeah, my mom didn't believe, she thought that the whole music stuff was a phase.
05:53Because I, like, I went through so many different sports.
05:57At one point I wanted to be a model.
06:00And, excuse me, um, I just, I started, I would let it go after a while.
06:06So, when I told her that I wanted to do music, she was just like, right, you know, sure.
06:13And then I.
06:13I know exactly how that is.
06:14Yeah, she didn't believe me.
06:15So, then I had my first concert in my city and, like, so many, excuse me, so many people
06:23came out and she was there.
06:25So, like, when she saw, like, everybody there and she was just like, okay, maybe, maybe you're
06:30serious about it.
06:31And now, now she loves it.
06:33I totally feel that.
06:34Because I think for me too, um, when I was, when I was pursuing radio, like, my parents
06:39didn't get it.
06:40Yeah.
06:40You know, they didn't understand it.
06:41They just saw me working these odd-ass hours on a day and night.
06:45And it's like, okay, what's the end result of this thing?
06:48Yeah, that was before, before, like, I got my deal and everything.
06:53My mom was making me go to school.
06:55Like, there was no ifs, hands, or buts.
06:57Same here.
06:58I begged her to give me a year off.
07:01And she at least gave me that so I could figure it out and do my thing.
07:05And then, I remember I had signed up for school, everything.
07:10I took my placement test.
07:11And they gave me my schedule.
07:13And I'm like, I'm so upset.
07:16And then, like, two weeks later, I signed my deal.
07:18And she's just like, you're good.
07:19Do what you want.
07:21So, I'm happy now.
07:22That's what's up, man.
07:23I think, I think with, like, Spanish moms, you gotta kinda show and prove.
07:28You can't really just say you're gonna do something.
07:30They actually wanna see it.
07:31And then, then is when they get, you get the full support.
07:33But, yeah, cause it's like in the business that we in, you know, it's not like set hours.
07:39You don't have a set job.
07:40Like, you're literally just figuring it out until you get that big moment.
07:44And she was just seeing me wake up whenever I wanted, writing music, going to the studio.
07:49And she's just like, alright, you know, like, but like, what exactly do you wanna do?
07:54And, yeah, now she's just like, she sees it.
07:58We're here with Dee Munoz, Joey Franchise here, Wild 94.1.
08:01Now, what's that feeling like, man, just signing that deal?
08:04Was it like almost, like when NBA players get drafted on draft day?
08:08Like, what did you do?
08:09It was the first thing you did after you signed that contract.
08:13I'm not gonna lie.
08:14Like, yeah, at the moment, it was like, man, I just got my deal.
08:21I went home, we celebrated, bought a nice car.
08:25But, um, I feel like I took it for granted for a little bit.
08:29Um, cause I, after I signed, you know, I went into the whole situation.
08:34Like, I had records out.
08:36I had, you know, I had my numbers.
08:37I had did my thing.
08:38But I didn't have no records ready to go.
08:40So now it's like, you gotta start over.
08:42You know, you gotta get in the studio.
08:43And it ain't no fast process.
08:45You're not gonna make ten records and think that, boom, those are it.
08:49So, it was just like a process.
08:52I spent like a year, two years working on this EP.
08:55So for a while, I just felt like I wasn't doing nothing when in all reality I was.
08:59And that's what I had to, that's what I had to figure out.
09:02But through that whole process, you know, having a deal, I was just like, I mean, yeah, I have a deal.
09:08But now, when you see the videos, you know, you see everything that's going on now, it's just like, man, like, I'm blessed.
09:15I'm really blessed.
09:15It's good that you see your records pop up.
09:19On, you know, these playlists on Spotify, you know.
09:23And it's crazy how, like, that's kind of like the forefront of, like, how we're breaking music.
09:26Like I said earlier with the TikTok, but, like, we're looking at some of these streaming services.
09:29How much is that coming?
09:30How much of you, is it a lot for you to kind of grasp in when it comes to, like, the streaming thing?
09:36Are you fully, like, zoned in on it?
09:37Like, what is your, you know, your take on music and the streaming service?
09:42Because back in the day, man, you know, CDs, physical copies.
09:45I like it.
09:46I feel like it's easier, easier way to access music.
09:49Like, I don't know, like, you know, I'm still learning the ins and outs about it, like, the whole playlist thing and stuff.
09:57Yeah.
09:58Because, like, when I was independent, I didn't pay attention to none of that.
10:01Yeah.
10:01I would just put my stuff out, letting the fans, you know, consume it and everything.
10:06But I think streaming is dope.
10:08Do you feel like there's a lot more pressure because of the streaming?
10:10I feel like everybody's, like, consistently trying to put out, you know, content at a fast pace.
10:15Yeah.
10:15Do you ever feel any pressure, like, to drop a new song or anything like that after, you know, like, Drinks is a fire record.
10:21And it's like, okay, well, when's the next one?
10:23Like, okay, well, we just did that, like, about a month or two ago.
10:27I don't think so.
10:28Or at least not right now.
10:30Yeah.
10:30Because before Moments, I hadn't put out music in two years.
10:33Yeah.
10:33So it's like going through that obstacle, I feel like, and then finally putting out my EP, right now I'm just living in the moment.
10:42I haven't even thought about that yet.
10:43But I definitely, definitely get what you mean.
10:46I feel like now everything is consumed so fast and people move on to the next thing easily.
10:53But we'll see what happens when we get there.
10:55For sure.
10:56And Moments EP is out right now.
10:59It's a dope, versatile, like, EP.
11:02Like, I feel like I got different vibes from you.
11:06Like, you know, we took it on a pop level.
11:08Then we went on this, like, R&B trap zone.
11:10And then we hit them with the Latino flavor, that regaton stuff.
11:14Like, what was it like putting together?
11:16Like, was it hard for you to, like, choose, you know, those selected records that you put on the EP?
11:20Nah.
11:21And then, like, having my NR, Zeke, my whole team, my managers, we all, like, collectively, you know, picked and choose.
11:29And I feel like that's what made us successful with it.
11:32But it was fun.
11:35I definitely tested myself.
11:37Like, one thing I'll say on this EP, if you listen to this EP and you go back to my old EP, to when I was independent, you can hear how much my voice grew from it, lyrically, everything.
11:49And I just pushed myself to limits that I didn't even know I could reach.
11:54Like, some of those notes on that EP, I didn't even think I had that in the bag.
11:58But it was cool.
11:59It was a good process.
12:01That's what's up, man.
12:01It's a fire project, by the way.
12:04And you got the video for Drink?
12:06Got the video for Drink out.
12:08And we have the Type of Love video out.
12:10Nice.
12:11And we got another video, but I ain't going to say too much about it yet.
12:13I see.
12:14I see.
12:14I see.
12:15I see.
12:15Do you see yourself, who do you see yourself collaborating with in the future?
12:19Is there anybody that you've come across that you've been like, yo.
12:21Bryson Tiller.
12:22Well, that's.
12:23I got you too.
12:23It's done.
12:24That's got to be done.
12:25Yeah.
12:26I'm big on Roddy Ricch right now.
12:28Roddy Ricch is.
12:29Roddy Ricch is fire, bro.
12:30Yo, he has one of the best albums I've heard in a long time.
12:34So he's winning right now.
12:35I think everything he's doing is dope.
12:38To be someone from Compton, Blockin' Bieber from the number one spot.
12:42That's insane.
12:42I feel like that's legendary.
12:44And his melodies, his cadence, wordplay, lyrics, everything.
12:49He just picks everything perfect for each record, I feel like.
12:52And I think me and him can make some cool stuff.
12:56Bryson Tiller, of course.
12:58Drake.
12:58We don't want to collab with Drake.
13:00I ain't going to lie.
13:02I want to make something with Bruno Mars.
13:03Something funky.
13:04We didn't get Bruno on that remix to Drake.
13:06That could be cool.
13:07That sounds.
13:08We speaking that.
13:09Hey, we speaking.
13:10Bruno.
13:11Bruno.
13:11Come on.
13:12We speaking that into existence.
13:13That would be cool.
13:18I want to collaborate with Paloma Mommy on the Latin side.
13:22Okay.
13:22She's dope.
13:23Yeah, she's fine.
13:24Nikki Chan.
13:25Lunai.
13:25I feel like if me and Lunai got together, the young girls would go crazy.
13:30But yeah.
13:31All those are.
13:31That's cool, man.
13:32That's the beauty of, like, that's what sucks for me because I can't speak Spanish that well.
13:37I'm terrible.
13:39So, like, to be in that realm, bro, and be able to go on both sides, man, that's like crossing, damn near, crossing universes.
13:46Yeah.
13:46It's awesome, bro.
13:47So, I'm really happy for you.
13:48Like, one of my favorite new artists to come out right now ever since.
13:51You know, like I said, the label introduced me to the record, and I'm just like, yo, who is this kid?
13:56And yeah, I'm just really happy for what the future holds for you, bro, for real.
13:59Yeah.
14:00It's been fun.
14:01And, you know, we've been getting that reaction a lot.
14:04So, like, it just makes me excited to see what the future's going to have.
14:08There you go.
14:09Yeah.
14:09D. Munoz, you can follow him on Twitter, Instagram, at official D. Munoz, official D-M-U-N-O-Z, for anybody that doesn't know how to spell it, and go show love.
14:21Alrighty, Moments EPs out right now, man.
14:23So, you go check that drink.
14:24Video's out right now.
14:26Singles fire.
14:27We out.
