00:00A strong gust of wind and a cloud of dust swept through the alley as this building came crashing
00:09down. At least 11 people lost their lives and several others were fear-trapped after a four-story
00:14building collapsed in Delhi's Mustapabad area on 19 April 2025. The incident was reported at 3 AM.
00:20A pancake collapse occurs when a building's floors give way one after another, falling
00:33vertically and stacking like a pile of pancakes. It is usually triggered when critical supports
00:38such as columns or walls are weakened by events like fires, earthquakes, explosions or structural
00:43floors. As these supports fail, the upper floors collapse onto those below, intensifying the impact.
00:49Pancake collapses are especially dangerous as they have little to no air pockets,
00:53making survival for those trapped highly unlikely. Several such incidents have been reported in Delhi
00:58and Delhi NCR over the years. In January 2025, a building in Delhi's Burari area collapsed in this
01:04manner, killing five people and prompting a 36-hour rescue operation. A similar tragedy struck Noida
01:10Shahberi area in 2018 when two illegally constructed buildings pancaked, leaving no survivors. The NDRF
01:17recovered nine bodies after a 66-hour operation. One of the deadliest examples is Lalita Park building
01:24collapse occurred in 2010 in New Delhi, where a poorly built tenement housing migrant workers collapsed
01:29during monsoon rains, killing 67 and injuring over 150. However, in Mustapabad's case, the exact
01:36reason behind the collapse remained under investigation, officials said.
