I knew that no reputable shelter would let me adopt since I was living in a frat for the summer and was generally completely irresponsible. I stumbled upon Lucas on Craigslist and brought him home a few days later.

He traveled to Oregon and Canada and reluctantly, he camped, kayaked, whitewater rafted, and backpacked. Lucas and my dad became quick friends, even though my dad never acknowledged he was a real dog. When my dad died, I cried into his tiny furry neck and he licked my tears. Lucas saw me fall in love with Alex and tolerated Shrew when we brought home another dog.

He proudly posed for the camera when we bought our first house and wore the shit out of his bow tie on our wedding day. When we brought our baby home from the hospital, Lucas gave her an approving sniff and never looked in her direction again. Lucas loved nothing more than turkey, rotisserie chicken, his chili pepper toy, and the few people he allowed within five feet of him. His attitude was unmatched, as was his breath.
