00:00So the holders are out, it will be a different name on the trophy this season, look at those Arsenal supporters celebrating inside the Bernabeu, 16 years since they've got this far in the Champions League and who's to say it can't be their year, Paris Saint-Germain are next, but they've dealt with Real Madrid emphatically, they've hammered them on aggregate, they've won in the Bernabeu tonight, it's a brilliant night for Arsenal, congratulations to every single one of them,
00:27and we will see them in the semi-finals against Luis Enrique and Paris Saint-Germain.
00:38Thank you very much Darren and Ali, what a journey it's been for this Arsenal side as the players go and celebrate with their fans even from a distance, the love is definitely not lost between them, it's so powerful,
00:54it is such an amazing night for this team, six years it took this side to return to Europe's top table, look at these scenes here, six years it took, last year they were knocked out in the quarter-finals,
01:08this year they've gone one better and wow have they done it in style, they have knocked out the holders emphatically, the side who believe that this trophy is theirs and only theirs,
01:20the 15-time winners Real Madrid are humbled in their own backyard, what an incredible performance, the togetherness of this Arsenal side is absolutely incredible, the joy that we can see here,
01:34I've got to ask you Martin Keown, Arsenal Invincible, Arsenal through and through, look at this, I mean, what does this mean?
01:42Great scenes, you know celebrating with the fans there, it doesn't get much better than this, you're into a semi-final the first time since 2009, Declan Rice's performance, Saka, I'm really pleased for Martinelli, because you know, the job they did defensively, coming back and then both of them to score on the night, Saka missing the penalty, didn't affect him at all,
02:02an incredible performance, he's only recently, two weeks he's been back from injury, amazing.
02:08It's absolutely amazing, I'll tell you who else was amazing, Declan Rice, man of the match tonight, man over the two legs, let's hear from him now, speaking to Becky.
02:18He just started and we hadn't even come to us yet, I said, how are you feeling? And he launched into it, Dec, go on, you've got the player of the match trophy in your hands.
02:25Yeah, back to back, I think it's just such a special night for this club, it's a historic night for this club, we have an objective in this competition, we want to play the best teams and we want to win this competition and there was a lot of talk coming here about them coming back because they've done it so many times before, but we had so much belief and confidence from that first leg that we had enough to come here and win the game and not just win the game, we knew he was going to suffer, but we knew he was going to win.
02:53Yeah, we had it in our mind and then we've done it in real life, so yeah, yeah, what a night for the club.
03:00Myles, come in here, I mean, what a season you've had, period, but how was your first experience of the Bernabeu?
03:07It was incredible, honestly, when you see it on TV, it's a lot different to when you come live, so when I first walked out, it's a lot, you know, but it's got to take in a moment and have fun, you know?
03:18You are Champions League semi-finalist, this is the first time that Arsenal have done this since 2009, we've spoken about creating your own history, but what does that mean to you all?
03:28It's massive, you know, I sensed it before I sent to the club that we was on an upward trajectory as a club and, you know, I felt it and the players we've got and the direction we want to go in, it's been tough in the Premier League because we lost that last year on a point, this year it slipped away from us, but in this competition we've done amazingly well and this club's going to do special things over the next few years.
03:48We all fully believe it, we have full trust in this manager, he's unbelievable and we've got players like him coming through, Ethan, other young lads who really want it as well, so we've got a real good mix and, like you said, semi-finals, it's massive for us and we just want to take tonight in because we want to take it one step at a time and now PSG next, who are an amazing team.
04:05Well, let's face it, guys, it was never going to be a low-key evening tonight, was it, when you come and play here? Just talk us through some of the emotions in that first half especially for you, who wants to take this one?
04:15Let him go, let him go.
04:16Okay, Miles, come on, come on.
04:17Come on, boy.
04:18Can you say it one more time, please?
04:19Just the emotions of that first half that you went through, it was never going to be a low-key game, obviously the penalty didn't quite go your way and then Dec, we'll get to you and what happens with Gillian.
04:29Yeah, it's incredible, you know, the fans, they don't make it easy for us, but as a team, we know it's going to be like this when we came, so as long as we start together and, you know, keep backing each other through the highs and lows, we'll be fine.
04:42Five minutes it took with that VAR check in that first half.
04:45I knew, I knew it wasn't a penalty, look, don't get me wrong, I had my arm on him, but you have to do that in the box, you have to try and stop him, someone was going to let him go, but I knew it wasn't a pen.
04:54I'm an honest guy, I said to him straight away, like, and I said to Vasquez, it's not a pen and I would admit if, you know, if I pulled him down, I would say, but he just fell to the floor and it wasn't a pen and I was fully confident it would get overturned and we just had to stay calm.
05:06We was a bit naive again at times, we tried to control the game a little bit better, but in the end, we've got the job done and, like I said, it's a historic night for the club and, yeah, honestly, I'm lost for words, it's just very special.
05:17Very quickly, PSG? Yeah, top team, played them once already, we feel like they're a different team to back then, we've seen what they can do, but also we see what Villa done to them last night and caused them a lot of problems.
05:29So, look, we'll be working hard, we now have to go to Whipswitch on Sunday, which is going to be a tough game because we want to secure that, keep going and keep winning matches in the Prem and then also, like you said, focus on this competition.
05:40Yeah, well, massive congratulations, enjoy this one, take care. Thanks, guys.
05:46Yeah, it's incredible. Do you know the last time Real Madrid were knocked out of the quarter-finals in the Champions League, they were beaten by Monaco 21 years ago in 2004.
05:55Miles Lewis-Kelly wasn't even born then and this tells you a lot about this Arsenal team, they are a young side, led by a young manager who's learning on the job as well.
06:06How impressed are you with what Mikel Arteta has managed to achieve year on year with this club?
06:13Yes, very impressed. I mean, they were excellent over two legs, but they're in the semi-finals, that's all they're in.
06:18You know, we want them to win and once they win it, we'll eulogise about Mikel, about Declan, about everybody else.
06:24But they've done the hard part, they're in the semi-finals, they've got an equally difficult tie to come up.
06:27But you have to get over the line, Rashman, it's fine getting into the quarters of the semis, you have to go on and win it.
06:33But they deserve every credit for what they've done over these two legs.
06:36They beat Madrid, it's a poor Madrid I thought, but they've beaten them and beaten them convincingly.
06:41So we'll wait and see, you know, what challenge PSG come and bring, because they had a different side to what they originally faced in the early on in the competition.
06:48Yeah, very much so. But what impressed you most about the way that Arsenal dealt with this game?
06:53I think it's the way that they managed it. I think we've watched them in the Champions League in previous years and they've been naive, as Declan mentioned there.
06:59And they've been punished at times and they kind of haven't turned up on when it's really counted and mattered.
07:04Here today, I think against the champions and over the two legs, they bossed it. They absolutely bossed it.
07:10And Declan was at the forefront of that, I thought. But also equally, I would say Saka in terms of defining and being decisive.
07:17And we've talked about and I've debated it quite a lot over the years about, is he world class?
07:22Is Saka 100% world class footballer who will decide matches now for the rest of his career, I believe, at the top level, at the top table, alongside the best players?
07:30And I think he would have gone into this game just like Declan Rice and gone, right, on their team, they've got Jude Bellini and Declan Rice.
07:36That's against me. Oh, you've got Vinicius and Mbappe. Saka will be judging himself against those players. That's what happens.
07:42They've come out on top today. It's only one game over two games. I get that.
07:45But it's a chance to go, right, right, I'm at the top table today and I've actually sat here comfortably and overshadowed the people that were meant to be better or considered better than me.
07:54Right, let's start talking. Where am I? And I think it's a great confidence boost.
07:57Do you know that the context we put it into, you know, without a striker, Havertz injured, Jesus out.
08:02Saka, 101 days or so it was to get him back. He gets back just in time, just two weeks ago.
08:08And he's performing like this. It's incredible. But the team performance really stood out.
08:13The low block, the two wingers. And I think Martinelli and Saka deserve a big mention because with the tenure for Arteta, they really have stood up for him.
08:22And tonight it was fitting that they score the two goals. But look, this is an Arsenal team. Some way to go. PSG next. Lovely. Let's bring it on.
08:30But they're a very healthy team at the moment. So Arsenal will go again. They need to secure the Premier League.
08:37They want to do well in that to get back here again for next year. But this is a fantastic night for us.
08:42Well, one thing I would say, if you're going to say, is there a team left in the competition equipped to deal with the PSG team in terms of their pace and their physicality, how direct they are.
08:51This Arsenal team, you'd say, ah, the two full backs, 1v1, are magnificent. They proved that again today.
08:56Defensively, they have sound as you like. And they've got people in centre midfield areas you can cover the ground. Declan Rice, the way he can transition.
09:03I think a shout out for Kivi all as well, because everyone was looking at him as a weakness in the team.
09:08No, he stood up and he played exceptionally well tonight.
09:10He did. He stood up to be counted. And so did the rest of this Arsenal side, what they have shown in Europe over these last two legs in these two quarterfinals here at the Santiago Bernabeu.
09:22OK, plenty more reaction and analysis coming up. But just to let you know, the quarterfinals of the Europa and Conference Leagues continue tomorrow.
09:30It could be a season defining night for the British clubs involved there as well.
09:34It is, of course, all square in each of the Europa League ties featuring Manchester United, Rangers and Tottenham.
09:39A coverage of all of those begin at seven o'clock. Much less jeopardy for Chelsea on TNT Sports 4.
09:46And you can review all the action, of course, in the highlight show at 10.30 on TNT Sports 1 across the Easter weekend.
09:53Our focus then shifts to the Women's Champions League semifinal first legs. Arsenal are hosting Lyon on Saturday.
10:00Chelsea visit Barcelona on Sunday. And next weekend also sees the start of the World Snooker Championship with the attention, as ever, on Ronnie O'Sullivan.
10:12Welcome back on what has been a huge night at the Santiago Bernabeu. Arsenal dominant. Arsenal have knocked out the holders.
10:22The 15-time champions of this competition. They beat them 2-1 on the night. 5-3 on aggregate. 5-1 on aggregate, I should say.
10:30They are through to the semifinals. They will beat PSG next. It has been a week to remember for the Arsenal fans.
10:39This team have really come of age, haven't they, Martin?
10:42Yeah, I mean, you come here to a stadium of this type and you put out the performance.
10:46There was a, you could smell a bit of fear, maybe, from the fans.
10:51But the way the team performed, you know, they just, they look comfortable the whole night.
10:56Just sitting in that block. As I say, the wide players, the way they work for the team.
11:00And then on that counterattack, we talked about a counterattack situation.
11:04Arsenal scoring a lot of goals in the Premier League in that situation.
11:07And the way they've managed the two ties, I think it's been a real step up from last season, Champions League.
11:14It's only their second season in it.
11:15Bayern in that first game last year, they didn't seem to know really how to attack their opponent.
11:19This time around, I think being 3-0 up and really going for it, set down a marker.
11:24And then tonight was about finishing the job off and they looked really strong here tonight.
11:28Yeah, they did, especially coming up, as you say, Bayern were a formidable opponent.
11:33And so, too, has Bukaya Saka just pitch side, actually.
11:37Just still celebrating with the Arsenal fans.
11:39Yeah, prolific opponent in Bayern Munich, prolific opponent in Real Madrid tonight.
11:45Let's take a look at Bukaya Saka.
11:47I mean, he's there, as I say, not speaking to us at the moment, but he missed the penalty.
11:5113th minute.
11:52I think everyone's sort of scratching their heads a little bit as to why he took this approach.
11:57But it didn't deter him.
11:59That was in the 13th minute.
12:00In the second half, he came back and scored.
12:02That's redemption.
12:03And that's maturity for someone still so young.
12:06Yeah, that's character.
12:07I mean, he knows his worth.
12:08He knows his value.
12:09It's a wonderful finish, by the way.
12:10The keeper's coming out and he just thinks it's a great bit of football.
12:13And it's just, again, he goes in there.
12:15I mean, defensively, I think there's a lot to pick out.
12:17They make it so easy.
12:18Rudiger trying to step up the right back, playing one side.
12:21But you can't discredit the finish.
12:22It's a wonderful run.
12:23Gets in there.
12:24How calm he is.
12:25And, again, the key point is after such a miss with a penalty,
12:28to have the confidence to do this, I think, tells you and signifies where he is as a player.
12:32Mentally very strong, isn't he?
12:33Yeah, top.
12:34And you have to be in a stadium like this.
12:35Yeah.
12:36But the fact that he missed a penalty, as you said, and came back to do that,
12:40and came back to influence the game, that's the most important thing.
12:43And, you know, it's great to see him back on the football field.
12:47He was off for a while, and he got his rewards today.
12:50Yeah.
12:51Yeah.
12:52He's just in that little pocket, finds him, you know, really good ball that he plays there.
12:56But this man, Saka, just honestly, he wasn't even around.
12:59You know, just two weeks ago, he comes back to the party just in time.
13:03I spoke about him before, and we debated, I spoke about this before, debating, like,
13:07where he is in the grand scheme of things as a forward player.
13:11And my only thing that went against him was about playing on this stage.
13:15Of course.
13:16It was only because he hadn't done it.
13:17Of course.
13:18Where you go, well, can he?
13:19We don't know.
13:20He comes here, over the two legs especially, but he's been doing it now this season.
13:24You have to be successful to be classed in the annals of the people we've spoken about.
13:28You have to win, and you have to be a perennial winner, and you have to win this tournament,
13:32because the best teams win this tournament.
13:34So if you can perform like that in a quarterfinal, brilliant.
13:37If you can do it in a semifinal, in a final, because we'll be singing his name from the rooftops,
13:41but you have to give us something.
13:43Because winning a quarterfinal, unfortunately, I don't want to be a party, but the brilliance
13:47at Arsenal have been.
13:48But it is only the quarterfinal, you know.
13:50I agree with you.
13:51They've been here before.
13:52I agree with you, but at the same time, Maki, you've got to come here.
13:54Huge stepping stone.
13:55Yes, definitely.
13:56Come in here, the holders, and go into them.
13:58Listen, you lot sit in your spot, I'm going to take centre stage today.
14:01But then you cannot lose to PSG.
14:02Yeah.
14:03You can't lose, you can't lose them.
14:05Otherwise, you've just got to the semifinals and lost.
14:07We've all been to quarterfinals, we've all been to semifinals.
14:09It's the first time in 20 odd years that this Real Madrid have gone out of a quarterfinal.
14:13Yeah.
14:14It's a huge task.
14:15There'll be massive repercussions here.
14:16Heads will roll here.
14:17You know that.
14:18What will it be like tomorrow for the likes of Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., Drew Bellingham?
14:22The newspapers will tear into them.
14:24The manager probably won't be here next year.
14:26You know, there'll be a plethora of...
14:27The PR machine will jump into action tomorrow.
14:29We're signing this person, we're signing this person to get the fans back on side.
14:32But losing in the quarterfinals and losing the way they did.
14:35They were tootless today.
14:36They went down with a fight.
14:37Arsenal controlled them quite comfortably for 180 minutes last week and this week.
14:41No threat, no fear, no nothing this year.
14:44We thought that before the game because Madrid are not playing well.
14:47But still, Arsenal had to come and do it and show that they have the mettle
14:50and show how mentally strong they are to cope with this.
14:53And they've done it easily.
14:55So it was a wonderful performance.
14:56You know, I think we've all been there in our careers where you go,
14:59there's a moment where you go, you know what, guys?
15:01That's the moment when I've had real belief.
15:04We all believe in our teams, but you need a moment in history where you go,
15:07it was there where it all clicked and fell into place.
15:10Because it feels like this tie over the two days could be that for this Arsenal team.
15:14Well, let's hope so.
15:15And individually, I mean, Declan Rice, he's up against Jude Bellingham.
15:18Phenomenal.
15:19He's announced himself, hasn't he now?
15:20There was only one winner.
15:22Do you know, he was absolutely magnificent.
15:24And this is a player, you know, he's only started taking corners, you know, last Christmas.
15:28And then the two goals were massively significant, those two free kicks.
15:32But the way he played out there today, the interceptions into midfield,
15:35the tackles he makes, you know,
15:37that key moment when the referee, okay, gives a penalty and VAR, you know,
15:41because that, if that's given as a penalty, again, changes this game massively.
15:44And Declan was once again involved in that.
15:46I think the difference with Declan, why I feel that he's hugely an elite player,
15:51is that in every facet of his game, he works at a high level.
15:56And I think that would have been a disservice to him if he had gone to a football club where they went,
16:00right, we're going to pigeonhole you and you're going to be this.
16:02Because I think he has far too much to do that.
16:05He can be the player that changes the rhythm of the game with a drive and a drop of the shoulder and run with the ball.
16:10He can play a pass.
16:11But again, he can be a defensive shield as well, which he showed today at different times.
16:16And that ability to do different parts of the game, I think, really does set him apart.
16:19Yeah.
16:20Well, I think this whole team have set themselves apart, certainly from this Real Madrid side,
16:24this prolific side, all those big players who really would have thought that they could have mounted this remontada,
16:29this comeback here at the Santiago Bernabeu, this mythical arena it wasn't to be tonight
16:34because Arsenal were just too good and they were masterminded by this man, Mikel Arteta.
16:40What a couple of games we've seen from Arsenal in this week.
16:44We're hoping to hear from the Arsenal boss after this.
16:47Hi, the man who's masterminded what we've seen over these last two legs.
16:55Mikel, in your reign as Arsenal boss, where does this one rank for you?
17:00Two legs and you've beaten the holders, Real Madrid.
17:03One of the best nights in my football career, for sure.
17:07And a really special one.
17:09I mean, we played against the team with the biggest history.
17:12That has been an inspiration, I think, for all of us in this competition
17:16and to be able to win the time in the manner that we've done it.
17:19I think we have to be very proud of ourselves.
17:21And that's it. It's the manner that you did it.
17:22You looked in control from start to finish against this Real Madrid side.
17:27And ordinarily at your ground, you did it.
17:30But here at the Bernabeu with the noise, with the expectation,
17:33how proud are you of the way that the players conducted themselves?
17:37I'm really proud because it's very difficult.
17:39It's my first time in that touchline, so I have no experience before to be there.
17:43And after two, three minutes, you realise that anything can happen in this stadium.
17:48And I think you have to be there to realise that.
17:50And I got a feeling straight away.
17:52Something goes wrong.
17:53They score a goal.
17:54Game on.
17:55And anything can happen.
17:56Fortunately, a lot of things went for us.
17:58A part of Bukayo's missing the penalty.
18:01But I think overall we did what we had to do to win the game.
18:04We were talking, I think, listen, in all of our careers, there were moments in our careers,
18:08our club careers, where you go,
18:09that was a big moment for us that really changed the dynamic and the belief in the squad.
18:13Could tonight, over these two legs actually, be part of that for you guys?
18:16I hope so.
18:17I think obviously...
18:18Do you sense that feeling?
18:19I have that feeling.
18:20And obviously the history we have in this competition is so short.
18:23It's the third time in our history that we've done what we've just done.
18:26So we need to build on that.
18:28And we are really hungry.
18:29We want more.
18:30It's a really young team that is very determined.
18:32And all these experiences, including me for sure,
18:34it's going to help us a lot to try to achieve something big.
18:38Mikel, Maka was saying, and of course he's won this thing two times already,
18:42that it's only a quarter-final, by the way.
18:44But last year's quarter-final, we went out to Bayern Munich.
18:47And in that first leg, we didn't seem to know whether to attack or to sit.
18:51The game was 2-2.
18:52And this time around, you were so emphatic in that first game.
18:55How much are you learning in the Champions League through last season?
18:59Are you questioning his tactics last year, are you?
19:01It's a difficult situation when you have the first games at home.
19:04It's a positive night.
19:05Well, I think last season, I think we started the game really well against Bayern.
19:09But then we made two crucial mistakes that cost us the penalty and a really sloppy goal.
19:14And then, yeah, we started to doubt a little bit how to play the next game,
19:17and especially the second game against Bayern.
19:19I don't think it was good enough.
19:21Today, I think, and the game in London, we had a very different mindset.
19:24I think we had full belief that we could beat this team,
19:27that we could be better than that, we could dominate them.
19:29But then you have to do it, and the players did it.
19:31And the semi-final, you've already faced PSG, of course, this year,
19:34but they look a different team now.
19:36How much are you looking forward to that game?
19:38Yeah, I watched the game last night. Another crazy game.
19:41So anything can happen in this competition.
19:42They are an incredible team. I know the manager really, really well.
19:45And, yeah, let's enjoy tonight and just start to think about that one soon.
19:49And it must be special for you being an old team as well.
19:53Yeah.
19:54And the fact that you've already beaten them this year.
19:56It is, and we have the experience of that.
19:58But as you said, I think they are a different team now.
20:00They are on an incredible run at the moment, but as well for us.
20:03So I think we showed tonight that we can compete against any team.
20:06So on one of the individual players, and I know you'd like to talk as a collective more,
20:09but Declan Rice over the two legs I thought was absolutely outstanding.
20:13And the investment you guys have had him, it looks like a snip right now.
20:15Yeah, I think tonight he was immense.
20:17I think he turned the game around the moment that the game was 50-50.
20:20He got the ball, he turned the game.
20:22I think he was immense today.
20:24I think he made a difference in the time.
20:26Lewis Skelly has to be mentioned as well, by the way, I'm sorry.
20:29He can't.
20:30I'm looking at it.
20:31He's fastball.
20:32He can't be 18.
20:33He can't be 18.
20:34Yeah, I know.
20:35He's such a young boy, absolutely.
20:36Incredible.
20:37Yeah.
20:38I've got to ask you, you talked about being on the touchline here.
20:39And you know, with your Catalan roots and having played for Barcelona,
20:43you're probably not that liked here, but they quite like you at PSG.
20:46That's going to be a very different experience, isn't it?
20:48It is going to be, obviously.
20:49I had a wonderful time there.
20:50But now the mindset is going to be to prepare well and go through.
20:54We want to be in that final.
20:55We're going to have to work so hard and do a lot of good things against that team.
20:58Yeah.
20:59But we are certainly capable of doing it.
21:01It's been an incredible night for you.
21:02Really huge congratulations from all of us.
21:04Congratulations.
21:06See you.
21:07Take care.
21:08I think he has to take huge credit.
21:09Like you said there, I think last season, I think he seems to be a manager
21:12who seems to be learning.
21:13Yeah, he's had some difficulties in the Premier League this season.
21:16That has been consistent.
21:17But you see, you get to the big stage here.
21:19Your players have to be adaptable and have the ability to learn from past mistakes, etc.
21:24But also in that dugout, you have to be able to do that.
21:26And like you said today, it's his first time there.
21:28It's quite an intimidating place to be, but he handled it so well.
21:31Is this the mentality shift we see in this Arsenal side then?
21:34Because they've come close, haven't they?
21:35But they've fallen short in big games, whether that's in the Premier League
21:38and other competitions as well.
21:39This is where we saw a different Arsenal, would you say, Martin?
21:42Well, you know, I was reasonably happy last year.
21:44They won 14 out of the last 16 games.
21:46So I think the evidence was there.
21:48It was just obviously this is another level.
21:50You know, you go to a new level at the Champions League and each player is doing that.
21:53You can see Declan Rice developing.
21:55You know, Timber coming back into the team.
21:57Saliba, it looked magnificent at times tonight.
22:00Okay, he makes the mistake for the goal, blocks his copybook a little bit.
22:02But so many good performers.
22:04Every player developing, growing.
22:05And the manager and his staff, you know, they are really up for it.
22:09And this is a memorable night now for the Arsenal fans.
22:12I said that Arsenal make for a formidable opponent.
22:15And they certainly did tonight.
22:17And they're learning on the job, aren't they?
22:18That's valuable, isn't it?
22:19They're learning and they have to keep on progressing.
22:20It's as simple as that.
22:21They've beaten PSG already.
22:22We know PSG are a different size.
22:24But they have to go on and make this count.
22:27Make this count tonight.
22:28It's only a quarter-final, don't you, Martin?
22:29No, it's not, Martin.
22:30No, it's not.
22:31Martin, I hope they win it.
22:32With the only English team refs.
22:34There's only team refs.
22:35I know, I know that.
22:36But I hope they do it.
22:37But it's pointless just winning a quarter-final and getting knocked out.
22:39Great, we'll celebrate it.
22:40Great performance.
22:41But you have to lift the...
22:42You have to bring over the silverware.
22:44It is still a huge achievement though, isn't it?
22:46Yes.
22:47For this Arsenal side, over the two legs, to knock out Real Madrid.
22:50The holders, 15-time winners of this competition.
22:53The side, as I say, they always think that this trophy belongs to them.
22:57It doesn't anymore.
22:58There is going to be a new winner come May.
23:01Could it be Arsenal?
23:02Well, we'll find out in the next legs.
23:04The highlights, though, of all the Champions League quarter-finals are coming up next.
