00:00I just saw this, courtesy of Kawakami on Twitter, and I'd like to run it by everybody in the room and see how this grabs you.
00:08The Warriors originally were not going to have a shoot-around this morning, which is standard for home games the last few seasons,
00:17given the veteran status of the team and wanting to give them rest and all of that, especially, I think, at this time of year.
00:25However, Steve Kerr has even recently talked about how little practice they actually do this time of year.
00:30So, normally, no shoot-around, but after getting a request from player leadership to have a shoot-around,
00:41Steve Kerr put one on the schedule, and the team had a shoot-around earlier today.
00:46Okay.
00:47So, I imagine player leadership, I mean, that must mean Steph, Dre, and Jimmy.
00:53I don't know who else that would mean.
00:55Maybe come on.
00:55I don't know.
00:57But player leadership said, we need to get our butts into the gym today and get ready for this game tonight.
01:01How does that grab you?
01:02It grabs me as them trying to check every box and, you know, paying extreme attention to detail.
01:08And I also think that shoot-around is as much about being together than it is like Steph Curry needs to work on his shot.
01:17So, you know, Steph Curry, get the shots up, and, you know, Buddy Heald and the rest of it.
01:22Yeah, get some shots up and, you know, break a sweat.
01:24But I do think a lot of it is being there together.
01:27I mean, I wonder.
01:28I can't tell you that that's not a part of it, and obviously that is to a degree.
01:33But also, there's got to be some strategy, something tactical about this idea.
01:38And the veterans who are all dinged up forgoing their rest so that everyone can come do this tells me that, I don't know, there's something that they wanted to address going into this game from a strategy standpoint, from a tactical standpoint.
01:53How does it grab you, Randy?
01:54My mind immediately goes to 2023 Game 7 versus Sacramento when Steph told everybody, like, if you don't want to, you're not part of this, don't get on the bus.
02:03Because shoot-around feels more like, as Dibs was saying, just the guys being together than, like, a practice and, like, gearing up for an opponent.
02:10Kind of feels more like there's a message that they want everyone on the team to hear.
02:13Yeah, yeah.
02:15I just, I find that very interesting that the players, the tired old players, called Steve and said, get everybody in the gym.
02:24Right.
02:25I mean, let's just, let's show up and let's treat this the way that it should be treated, which this is not just a garden variety game in the regular season.
02:34This is win or stay home.
02:36It's not win or go home.
02:38It's win or stay home.
02:39And you don't want to stay home.
02:40You want to win and get on a plane.
02:42You don't want to win and stay home.
02:44That would mean you have to play on Friday.
02:46Well, I tell you what I like from it, and I guess maybe, Grandy, this is a part of what you're sort of indicating with what you said.
02:52If you think of Game 7 in Sacramento, I very much want, and I'm sure they will, not that they didn't on Sunday, but you have to treat this.
03:03I don't care about the phrase that gets everybody going, must win.
03:06Right.
03:07You have to treat this as something that is absolutely critical.
03:12You have to win tonight.
03:16And if that's part of the messaging, I don't know that, like, just because you're Brandon Pajemski or Jonathan Kaminga or Moses Moody, I don't think that's lost on you.
03:25I don't think they don't know that.
03:27But maybe there's something to, right?
03:29Steph Curry's like, my thumb hurts.
03:31Jimmy's like, my leg hurts.
03:33Draymond's like, my neck hurts.
03:34And we want you all here right now.
03:37Right.
03:37This is critical.
03:40And the thing about it, Mark, is they're coming off a game where they shot 54% from the floor and 46% from three.
03:47So it's not like, guys, we had a bad, bad night.
03:49Let's get in the gym and shake off the cobwebs.
03:52Right.
03:52They shot it great.
03:53They played mostly great.
03:55Yet, you look at it and it's, guys, we need to do everything we can to make sure come 7 o'clock, we're ready for everything.
04:02But what bothered them about the game on Sunday?
04:05I would argue, like, here's what I saw.
04:08Moses Moody lost his minutes in the second half because they didn't feel like he was ready to dive on a ball.
04:13I saw Draymond get very, very frustrated with Quentin Post at one point because Quentin ended up, and I can't remember if it was Kawhi or James Harden,
04:22but it was one of those brilliant plays where the old vet is like, dude, if you're going to stand there, watch this.
04:30Whistle, foul, like, dude, you're too close.
04:34You're crowding them too much, and Draymond got very upset.
04:37And what happened, Quentin only got 10 minutes in the game and never scored.
04:41And so I wonder if there's also, like, hey, guys, like, you have to have unbelievable attention to detail.
04:49Full focus, full effort, leave everything out there for 48 minutes kind of an attitude tonight.
04:57And if they do that, by the way, they're the better team they should win.
05:00They should, and maybe the shoot-around is as much about Quentin and Moses and Buddy
05:06because Moses only shot four times, didn't make a three.
05:10Quentin shot once in 10 minutes and didn't make his three, and Buddy was two of six from three.
05:14So maybe the shoot-around is aimed at guys who actually may need a little work on their shot.
05:20Or what if they know Moses isn't playing?
05:23And they want to get Kaminga Sharp and get him ready.
05:25And they would like to get him mind, body, and spirit and strategy in place.
05:30It's very possible.
05:31Possible.
05:31Yeah.
05:32And to your point about must win, you know I bristle at the phrase unless it truly is.
05:37But if you want to look at what this is and you lose, then you have to, Friday's a true must win.
05:44And even if you do win that, the current odds to win the Western Conference, OKC, is minus 150.
05:50They are odds-on favorite.
05:52And they had the best regular season by point differential in the history of the association.
05:58They're going to be rested.
05:59And they won 68 games.
06:01So even if you lose tonight and you win Friday, you're going to be heavy, heavy underdogs to knock off a 68-win one seed like that.
06:11So, yeah, you want to avoid playing them.
06:13You want to avoid being out.
06:15But you also want to avoid playing them in the 1-8 series.
06:19You have to win tonight.
06:19Yeah, exactly.
06:20I'll avoid the phrase because I don't want to make you angry.
06:24You can use it.
06:25I know, but I don't want to.
06:27Because there's multiple ways to sort of, like, receive that phrase.
06:31Right.
06:31And so I'll use just a different, I'll use different words.
06:33You have to win tonight.
06:34Well, look at the level of urgency that they're showing.
06:37They're showing up for a shoot-around, which is not totally unheard of, but it's rare.
06:42It's not usual.
06:43And they're doing it because they see the urgency in tonight.
06:46So, yeah, without using phraseology, you could just explain things like, well, Jimmy Butler played 48 minutes on Sunday of 53.
06:55And he'll probably play about the same amount tonight.
06:58I hope.
06:58I hope his leg is up for it.
07:00Like, I mean, he was really hurt.
07:01Yeah.
07:01He was really hurt.
07:02I was listening to Slater this morning describe Jimmy at his locker after the game.
07:06And it was like, dude, he's putting clothes on going like, ah, ow, ow.
07:10Like, I mean, this is not something that I would think 48 hours later is like, okay, it's all good.
07:15Like, it probably hurts.
07:16And I know, lots of treatment.
07:17Lots of treatment.
07:17Pro athlete, $55 million.
07:19He's going to work his way through it.
07:20I have full confidence.
07:22But, like, that's got to work.
07:25His leg has got to work.
07:26And the leg doesn't care how much he makes.
07:29And this is where, like, his thigh is not thinking, you know what?
07:32We're making $55 million, so I'm going to feel better.
07:35No, you know what I mean, though.
07:35He's going to press through.
07:37No doubt.
07:38He's going to press through.
07:38But when you have a charley horse like that, it takes time.
07:42I mean, we've all had charley horses.
07:44It hurts, man.
07:45Yeah, absolutely.
07:46All right, Ricardo and Benicia.
07:47Hey, Ricardo, thanks for waiting.
07:48Thanks for calling.
07:49What's up?
07:51Hey, sir.
07:51How you doing, boys?
07:52Yo.
07:55Yo.
07:55So, obviously, just true words have never been said.
07:59I would much rather play Houston in the first round because you don't really want to play with the potential MVP of the league.
08:08But key things about tonight's game, I will say I would want Jaron Jackson Jr. to get into foul trouble.
08:17That's definitely one important key.
08:21And also, Desmond Bain is also a vital spot for the Grizzlies.
08:26So, try and keep him at bay.
08:27And also, try and play the percentage with John Morant.
08:30Obviously, he's not really that sharp of a three-point shooter.
08:32But, yeah, just play the percentage.
08:35I do want Camenga to play a couple more minutes as well.
08:40And, obviously, we don't know how it's going to end up tonight.
08:43Obviously, I am a little nervous, just like everybody else.
08:48But, yeah, it's key.
08:50I would much rather play an inexperienced Houston squad in the first round on Sunday than play OKC.
08:57Yeah, Ricardo, thanks.
08:59It's a totally good call.
09:00I happen to think, though, you're underselling it.
09:03I wouldn't use those words.
09:04It's like, I'd rather play Houston.
09:06No, you have to.
09:07You have to.
09:08Like, this is just not a realistic scenario if they lose tonight.
09:12And I hate the word realistic.
09:14I can't stand the word realistic.
09:16All you have to do is look at the history of ones versus eights, and it's only happened five times.
09:21And that one time that happened with the Warriors involved, and we mentioned it earlier,
09:26that was a fraudulent 67-win Dallas Maverick team.
09:29And this OKC 68-win team doesn't feel very fluky.
09:33No, they're not fraudulent at all.
09:35You're listening to 95.7, the game, KGM, ZFM, and HD1 San Francisco, and Odyssey Sports Station.
09:39Always live on the free Odyssey app.
09:41And now, coming to you live from the Laughing Monk studio.
09:45So glad you're with us.
09:45888-957-957-707 just texted in, why wouldn't Moses Moody be playing tonight?
09:51We've got to keep remembering.
09:52People are just jumping into your cars and stuff.
09:54Moses has been downgraded to questionable with back spasms.
09:57So we don't know his status tonight.
10:00There was no injury report for the Warriors as of last night, but today there is.
10:04And so Moody is on it.
10:05We don't know.
10:06Probably won't know for at least another couple hours.
10:09Might be Warriors Live by the time we get that news.
10:12But stay with us.
10:13If we hear anything, we will absolutely pass it along.
10:16But back to our call from Ricardo.
10:18Yeah, I don't.
10:19It's not even just what you said, which is that Oklahoma City is not fluky.
10:25And, you know, they're very good, and they're going to be tough to beat.
10:29If you get no break and no practice time, and you lose four in a row at home against lesser competition,
10:36again, I want to say that again.
10:38Did you hear what Eric Hasseltine said to us about Memphis since the All-Star break?
10:44Okay?
10:44Yep.
10:45One win against a team with a winning record.
10:47Say it slower with your deep voice.
10:48And it was the Pistons.
10:50One win.
10:52Against a good team.
10:54And even that team's like an okay good team.
10:57Like a kind of good team.
10:59Detroit's actually really struggled here in the last six weeks or so.
11:03Memphis is not good right now.
11:05Oh, and ten since January against the top nine seeds in the West.
11:13Oh, and ten.
11:16You can't go out there with what's on the line tonight and make it one in ten.
11:20You can't do that.
11:21No, you can't.
11:22You're allowed to, to use your phrase.
11:24It's within the rules.
11:26But I don't.
11:26You can't do it.
11:27I don't think it happens, but you have to go out there and play it.
11:32And I will offer up a little bit of good news because, you know, I get excited for this.
11:38The referee assignments.
11:39Oh, I did see this.
11:40But to me, they were mostly just names.
11:42Zach Zarba's not doing it.
11:44No, and you do have a veteran crew.
11:46Josh Tiven is your crew chief.
11:47And Bill Kennedy, 30 years as a ref, will be on the crew.
11:51And then Nick Butchert is also on there.
11:54But when you look at the stats, Josh Tiven, when he's the chief, you have the home team winning at a 58% clip.
12:02Okay.
12:02And fouls called on the road team more than 51%.
12:06So, in his history this year, his games have leaned toward home team success and road team fouls.
12:14Yes, yes.
12:14And the other crew members are very similar in their numbers.
12:18All the fouls should be on Memphis tonight.
12:20All of them.
12:21All of them.
12:22Them's the rules.
12:23I don't make them.
12:2459% actually win percentage for the home team with Tiv, Josh Tiven, 34 games.
12:30He was the chief.
12:31And the home team won 59% of the time.
12:33All right, Josh, let's go.
12:34You know, don't stop letting them grab Steph off the ball.
12:38Right.
12:39Don't do it.
12:40It's illegal.
12:42It's a foul.
12:45Set the tone right away.
12:48Do not let them grab Steph Curry when he doesn't have the ball.
12:54I don't know why this is so hard.
12:56It's your job to be looking at it.
12:58Well, Eric Hasseltine with a great comment about Draymond and the screens he sets.
13:03And it's like, I'm going to set this screen and move, and you're not going to call it.
13:07Now I'm going to move more.
13:08Now I'm going to move more.
13:09Now I'm going to move even more.
13:10And then finally, he's going to make them call it.
13:13Totally.
13:14And that's what we have in the NFL with holding, right?
13:16And that's what we have with the way people defend Steph.
13:18And I have no problem with that approach.
13:21What I have a problem with is the officials at times letting that tone get set.
13:26It's what happened when the Houston Rockets were here a week and a half ago.
13:30You just let them beat the hell out of the guy.
13:33Hey, Divs, can you read that number to me again?
13:35The official's record for home teams?
13:39Josh Tiven, the crew chief, this year home team wins 58.8% of the time.
13:46Generally speaking, across the NBA, the home team wins about 62% of the time.
13:50So that actually means that the official favors the road team.
13:53Who likes roadies?
13:5562%.
13:55I wonder.
13:56Who doesn't like roadie?
13:57I like a roadie.
13:58Yeah.
13:59Okay.
14:00Well, that's...
14:01Across the history of the NBA, the home team wins 62% of the time.
14:04So what's up with your...
14:04The history this year or...
14:05Yeah, what's up with your boy Josh?
14:06The whole NBA.
14:07Why does he hate fans so much?
14:09What's up with your boy Josh?
14:10The history of just this season, you're saying?
14:12No.
14:13No, the whole league.
14:14The history of the NBA.
14:15Forever.
14:15I could try to find this year.
14:16You find this year, because I was looking at this before, I don't think that home teams
14:21have been as successful this year as they have in days gone by.
14:26And if you want to talk about the history of the association, you've got some spots where
14:30teams are playing four games in four nights all on the road.
14:33Yeah, that's true.
14:34That would lean home heavy.
14:35So I appreciate, though.
14:37And you also...
14:38He jumps in to make sure you can refute the research that I do.
14:42Well, I mean, if you're a good supporter team, accuracy matters.
14:45Because if you're going to make the point that this guy Josh loves home teams and he
14:49actually hates them, I want to know.
14:52Right.
14:53I don't know that that's the case, but I want to know if that's the case.
14:57And it's nice to put some context to it.
14:59Yeah.
15:00Come on, Josh.
15:02Loosen up.
15:03Be popular once in a while.
15:05Stop being such a contrarian.
15:06I'll just add one more name and then you can go to the phones.
15:08Okay.
15:09And you're going to cringe when I throw it out because Mark Davis is the official.
15:13The guy that owns the Raiders?
15:15No.
15:16Oh.
15:16This is the guy who has a home team winning percentage of 48.2.
15:21And he's authored some Warrior games this year that have infuriated fans.
15:26Such as?
15:26Mark Davis.
15:27I'd have to remember the exact games.
15:29I thought you had that.
15:30Nope.
15:30Yeah.
15:3148.2 for Mark Davis.
15:34Hater.
15:35Exactly.
15:35That's somebody who just, like, you know what I mean?
15:37He shows up to...
15:39He's like when Bonds was...
15:41When people were throwing syringes at him or whatever.
15:44Like, just, like, enjoys being booed.
15:48Yeah.
15:48You wish you had Zarba.
15:4966.7% home team percentage.
15:52Damn it.
15:52That's an official right there.
15:54That's my man.
15:55Where's that guy tonight?
15:57Yeah.
15:57He's not laughing.
15:58Is he in Orlando?
15:59Nope.
16:00Okay.
16:00Nope.
16:01Hey, let's go to Jordan in the city.
16:03Hi, Jordan.
16:03Thanks for calling.
16:04Hi.
16:06Hi.
16:07So, one thing I wanted to point out was, I think that if the Warriors lose this game,
16:14I think they could probably...
16:18I have no problem with playing the Mavericks or Kings, but the problem I do have is that
16:22they're going to play the OKC, but the record isn't against us.
16:29I think we beat them a couple times, so I think we might have a chance.
16:34And Seth Curry and Jermon and Jimmy have experience, and Jimmy Butler knows exactly how it feels to come from the playoffs.
16:44I mean, to come from the play-in tournament all the way to play against one of the best teams.
16:49The best teams.
16:51And I want to play the Rockets, but one thing I don't want is they're probably going to run the same thing that they did last time they played them.
17:01And it's probably just going to lock down Seth Curry.
17:05So, Seth Curry's got to learn how to fight and do that.
17:09All right, Jordan, this is a wonderful call.
17:10How old are you, Jordan?
17:13I'm 10 years old.
17:14You're 10 years old.
17:16And what, are you just like on your way home from school or something?
17:20Yes, I am.
17:22Okay.
17:22You keep doing that work.
17:24You forget homework and go study box scores, okay?
17:27That's how you get ahead in life.
17:29Okay.
17:30All right.
17:30Thanks, Jordan.
17:31Thank you for calling.
17:33This is Jordan breaking down Dubs basketball.
17:35Love it.
17:36That's pretty good.
17:37Very strong.
17:38Some strong takes.
17:39And positive, too, about the feelings.
17:41But he's a little worried about what would lie ahead if they take on Houston again.
17:45Yeah, I don't know that that game a week and a half ago has anything to do with what would happen next.
17:53You know, I hear a lot of people, and I don't want to do a whole Houston breakdown because I think it's just bad juju.
17:59But if they do end up playing Houston, I know where we're going to go for the next three days.
18:04Oh, my God, they're young and they're athletic and they're tall.
18:07What do we do about that?
18:08Well, I'd argue that most games that the Warriors play, they are less athletic and shorter than who they're playing.
18:16You know what I mean?
18:17Almost every time.
18:18Right.
18:18They've locked Giannis up three weeks ago.
18:22Like, locked his butt up.
18:25He is tall and he is athletic.
18:29Very, very much so.
18:31So, like, it's not like the Warriors aren't used to combating this.
18:35They're not going to do it every single night, but they're used to combating this.
18:40And they've had success against Houston this year.
18:44More often than not.
18:46Depends on how you want to look at it.
18:47Yeah.
18:47Because with Jimmy Butler, they're 0-1.
18:501-1.
18:51Oh, because they did beat him the one time.
18:52Yeah, they did.
18:53They beat him in Houston.
18:54Yeah, it was February 13th.
18:56Steph had 27 in that one.
18:57And then the other game that he played without Jimmy in December, Steph had 19, and they lost.
19:04But they were 3-2 against Houston on the year.
19:06So, and again, it's a different team now with Jimmy Butler.
19:09But if I'm Houston and Ime Odoka and I do face the Warriors, I'm going to try the exact same blueprint.
19:15Yep.
19:16And good luck with that in the playoffs where every eyeball is much wider.
19:20I just don't.
19:21Yeah.
19:21Like, and again.
19:21And I do think that there's a sense of, you know, the collision course that the league would love to have.
19:27Oh, of course.
19:28And that would be Lakers-Warriors.
19:29Of course.
19:30If you're an NBA conspiracy theorist, Lakers and Warriors in four.
19:35Right.
19:35But, yeah, I don't want to get into it yet.
19:37No, no, no.
19:37It's premature.
19:38It's bad juju.
19:39But I'm not worried about the Houston Rockets if you're going to compare this to any concern that would go into,
19:47A, either playing Friday night, or B, the OKC Thunder.
19:51It's not even close.
19:52It's not even close.
19:54So I love that Jordan feels like the Warriors can succeed out of Friday night.
19:59I don't want to disagree with a 10-year-old, but I disagree with a 10-year-old.
20:04Man.
20:04The Warriors cannot succeed out of Friday night, in my opinion.
20:08So you have got to win the basketball game that is going to start in three hours.
20:15You have to win it.
20:16How old does the caller have to be for you to come down their road?
20:20Like, if he was 13, would you have just clapped back at him?
20:23Well, 13 is a terrible age, so I probably would have done that without even waiting for the take.
20:27Okay.
20:2713-year-olds probably should live on Mars for a couple of years before they come back.
20:32Right now, you're safe, though.
20:33You don't have a 13-year-old.
20:34Correct.
20:35You had to go through there so you can speak to it.
20:37I don't know that they've come out the other side yet, but anyway, go ahead.
20:40Maybe it's the teen on the back half of the number.
20:43It might be.
20:44It's a bad word.
20:45Yeah.
20:46It's a bad word.
20:47And I don't think you'll ever have three teens at the same time, because by the time your oldest is...
20:52By the time the little guy is 13...
20:55I will literally miss by, I think, three weeks.
20:59Man, that's a bullet dodge.
21:01The 18-year-old turns 20 three weeks before the 11-year-old turns 13.
21:05Man, that's classic.
21:06Yeah.
21:07Yeah.
21:07But he's 20 going on nine, so it's not going to help.
21:11And we know he's not listening, so...
21:13Is he?
21:14I don't know.
21:14Shoot your shot, it's all you got.
21:15Team buddy.
21:16Whatever, yeah.
21:18Anyway, how old does someone have to be?
21:22Any age.
21:23I'd come down anybody's road.
21:25Well, you didn't, so...
21:25No.
21:26Ten is clearly too young.
21:27No, but he was great.
21:28I'd come down his road if he said something like, I love the refs.
21:31I mean, if he'd said that, then we're going to have words.
21:34Just remember the Dibber when you watch the game tonight and you feel like that they're
21:37getting the whistle, because I think that they're going to get a good whistle tonight.
21:40They better get the whistle.
