Chili Palmer, un ancien gangster, a brillamment réussi à Hollywood. Mais il n'en peut plus de subir les règles du monde du cinéma et souhaite changer d'activité. Son ami Tommy Athens l'initie alors à l'industrie du disque. Il lui présente Linda Moon, une jeune chanteuse pleine d'avenir. Peu de temps après, Tommy est assassiné. Chili décide tout naturellement de prendre sa suite. Avec l'aide d'Edie, la veuve de feu son ami, il va convaincre Linda de signer un contrat sous son label. En agissant ainsi, Chili s'attire la haine d'un milieu prêt à tout pour réussir. Mais son sens des affaires et son attitude très "cool" vont lui être d'un grand secours...
