PSA: You Should Rinse Your Rice

It might seem like a chore, but rinsing rice is absolutely essential. Here's why we do it, and how to rinse to ensure perfect fluffy grains every time.

00:00If you think you can cook with rice straight out of the bag, think again.

00:04Straight out of the bag, rice is covered in this excess layer of starch.

00:08You'll notice this like white film, white dust that kind of gets on your hands when

00:12you lift it out.

00:14If you cook with rice without rinsing that starch off, it can make your rice gummy.

00:18It's especially important to rinse brown rice.

00:21It hasn't gone through the refining process that white rice has, so it may have more actual

00:26dirty dust and particulates on it.

00:29The only rice I would not recommend rinsing is a risotto rice.

00:34When you're making risotto, you want the excess starch to really help with the creamy texture

00:40of that finished risotto.

00:42There are two ways you can rinse your rice.

00:44The first is you can put it in a fine mesh sieve, hold it under your tap, and just keep

00:49rinsing water through it while you agitate it with your hands a little bit until you

00:54can see the water running clear.

00:57If you don't have a fine mesh sieve, you can do it the second way, which is to put rice

01:01into a bowl, cover that with water, and then tilt the bowl so that water runs out.

01:08So you just do this again and again until the water that pours out is running clear.

01:14This way can work really well, but you do have to be careful that you don't end up with

01:18most of your rice in the sink.

01:20You really don't want all that gunk in your rice, so you need to rinse your rice.
