Marzio Romano who was at the wheel of a white Lamborghini Gallardo #53, went straight at the last bend of the Circuit Ricardo Tormo of Valencia and crashed into the tyre wall after crossing over the sand trap. It happened on 25th lap of the first heat of the Sara GT race held at Valencia on Saturday, 28 June 2008. Apparently he failed to take the corner or had sudden steering failure after he had collided with Piergiuseppe Perazzini's Ferrari F430 early in the race. Marshals were quickly on the scene, the front side of the car was completely destroyed. The rescuers found the driver trapped inside, unconsciusness and with minor leg and chest injuries. Medics and officials spent several minutes attempting to resuscitate him. It appeared that Romano had suffered a massive heart attack.

After receiving emergency treatment at the medical center of the circuit Romano was transferred to the intensive care unit of Valencia Hospital. His family tried to take him to the Swiss clinic Ospedale Beata Vergine, but sadly he passed away five days later, on Thursday, 03 July 2008 at night.

Marzio Romano, aged 53 was a well known lawyer and an amateur racer from Mendrisio, Switzerland. Swiss, but in the 1970s he raced internationally with an Italian license, hence the confusion over his nationality. He scored good results contesting the Italian Formula 3 Championship. He finished 16th in points in the European Formula 3 series in 1978 at the wheel of a March 783 - Toyota Novamotor entered by the Italian team Euroracing, climbing on the podium in the Lotteria Grand Prix at Monza, behind Jan Lammers' Ralt RT1 and Patrick Gaillard's Chevron B43. Then he progressed to a Formula 2 Ralt RT2 - Hart in which he also participated in the Can-Am Series in the early 1980s. In 1983 he managed to take a sixth place in the final standing, second of the 2-litre class, behind Bertil Roos who drove a Marguey CA82-Hart and a March-derived Scandia B3-Hart. In the early 1990s Romano became one of the front-runners in the Ferrari 348 Challenge, scoring an astonishing win in the International Ferrari Day at Spa-Francorchamps in 1994.
