00:00 Well, finally, a closure in a journalist,
00:02 Soumya Vishwanathan murder case, the case that dates back to 2008,
00:06 finally had a hearing in Delhi's Saket Court, where the court convicted
00:12 and gave the quantum of punishment to the four accused for life term.
00:17 And the fifth accused received a term for three years.
00:21 This case particularly had
00:24 definitely jolted the very conscience,
00:28 not just of the residents of Delhi, but also of the legal,
00:31 the judiciary of this country, where it dragged for so long.
00:36 A family which waited for justice for more than 15 years now
00:40 finally finds closure here with the judgment coming from Delhi's Saket Court.
00:46 The details of the judgment are as follows.
00:49 The convicts, Ravi Kapoor, Ajay Kumar, Baljeet Malik and Amit Shukla
00:53 face charges under the Murder and Makoka, which is Maharashtra
00:58 Control of Organized Crime Act.
01:00 The court has also imposed a fine of one point two lakh rupees
01:04 on each of the four individuals.
01:06 The fifth accused, Ajay Sethi, has received a three year jail term.
01:11 Primarily, the court also found that the attack on Soumya
01:16 that happened on that fateful night in 2008 was primarily due to
01:23 with a motive of robbery.
01:25 Soumya Vishwanathan, who was an employee with a private television
01:29 news channel, was fatally shot in her car in Vasanth Kunj,
01:33 one of the poshest and the secure areas of the capital city, New Delhi,
01:39 on September 30th, 2008, while returning from work.
01:43 The court's decision follows an earlier conviction in October,
01:47 where Judge Ravindra Kumar Pandey found the accused guilty of the charges.
01:52 One thing which is very important to note here is that during the recent
01:55 sentencing proceedings, the public prosecutor highlighted discrepancies
01:59 between an unsatisfactory conduct report from the DLSA
02:03 for convict Amit Shukla and the jail superintendents report.
02:07 The case had initially been linked to robbery, and the police
02:10 investigation identified the perpetrators during the inquiry
02:14 into the murder of another journalist, Jigisha Ghosh.
02:18 The sentencing provides a sort of closure in the case.
02:22 That has lingered for many years.
02:24 And definitely for us also, for the journalist fraternity
02:28 who work in various parts of the country,
02:31 the case of Soumya Vishwanathan, her life snuffed out so young, so early
02:38 that the very concept, whether even the journalists are safe or not,
02:43 or whether they are the safety net around them in the line of duty
02:48 before and after hours of work is something that was
02:52 brought under scrutiny.
02:55 A lot of debate was conducted.
02:58 It was still going on.
03:00 But nonetheless, from Delhi's Saket High Court, this decision
03:05 as of now, Delhi's Saket Court, I beg your pardon.
03:09 This decision could be to a great extent
03:12 bringing a closure to the family, whether the debate is still on,
03:17 whether the convict should have been awarded the death penalty.
03:20 That is something that is still being discussed.
03:23 But as of now, the news coming from New Delhi
03:27 is that the accused in Soumya Vishwanathan murder case
03:32 have been given life term for the murder in 2008.
