The accident that claimed the life of Emanuela Chiara Lain Medaglia, 44-year-old, which family had Swiss origins, occurred during the first Saturday practice session for the "Coppa dei Templi" hillclimb, held on the 4.8-kilometer course of the Strada Provinciale 13 at Capaccio-Paestum, province of Salerno, southern Italy.

Standing shortly after the finish line, Mrs. Lain Medaglia was waiting for her husband, the racer Angelo Medaglia, who had failed to finish his practice run, due to a mechanical failure of his Fiat 500 Special-car 700 #181 entered in the Minicar trophy. She crossed the road in a prohibited area to find news about her husband by marshals but in that same moment came at speed the Peugeot 106 Rallye #153 entered in the E3 N1400 class, driven by Valerio Gatto, 19-year-old from Lamezia Terme who had just finished his stint.

Despite a desperate attempt to avoid the woman, Valerio Gatto struck her with the front right side of the car. She sustained severe head, arms and chest injuries on impact. An ambulance parked nearby, immediately picked her up but unfortunately had a puncture after a few kilometers. Another ambulance was called to take Emanuela Lain Medaglia to Agropoli hospital. She never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead on arrival.

After the fatal accident the event was immediately abandoned. The 19th edition of the Capaccio-Coppa dei Templi hillclimb, organized by the Automobile Club of Salerno, was a round of both the TIVM - Trofeo Italiano Velocità Montagna and the Coppa Italia Montagna.
