Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has described the escape of British nationals through the Rafah crossing as “positive news”. More British citizens have begun to leave the Gaza Strip, after Palestinian authorities listed nearly 100 as being eligible to cross to Egypt on Friday.

00:00 Well, since the onset of this terrible situation,
00:05 the UK government has been working with our partners internationally,
00:09 including, of course, Israel, Egypt and others to try and open
00:15 and keep open the border crossing at Rafah
00:18 to facilitate the evacuation of foreign nationals,
00:21 including British nationals from Gaza,
00:24 and in order to facilitate humanitarian aid getting into Gaza.
00:30 What we have seen is some positive news
00:32 that we are now getting a number of British nationals
00:36 through that crossing, and we will continue to work
00:39 to keep that crossing open, to liaise directly with Israel,
00:43 with Egypt and through intermediaries with Hamas
00:47 to ensure that as many British nationals can leave Gaza as possible.
