577 Hp, Twin Turbocharged V-8, New Mercedes-AMG G63 SUV 2023-2024

This AMG-badged G63 throws fire in the face of the seasoned Mercedes-Benz G-class we reviewed separately. A 577-horsepower twin-turbocharged V-8 gives this Hollywood cowboy faster acceleration than the Ford Bronco Raptor. Still, the hefty price tag separates CEOs from average Joes. A luxurious room with 20-inch wheels, the G63's high-quality cabin materials and techno-gorgeous cockpit,

While the G63 starts at around $180,000, most go well above that due to the countless customization options. However, the standard equipment list is quite livable, as every Mercedes-AMG G63 comes with 20-inch wheels, adaptive dampers, front brush guard, leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, and three-zone climate control.

Regular G63s come with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine that produces 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters sends that power to the all-wheel-drive system (4Matic in Mercedes marketing speak). A low-range gearing system (2.93:1 reduction) and three locking differentials are standard, allowing the G63 to scale steep dirt slopes with incredible ease. At our test track, the nearly 5,800-pound G63 rocketed to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. Besides its extra power, the G63 also features AMG-specific suspension tuning.

A worthy camper or boat carrier, the G63's maximum towing capacity is an impressive 7,000 pounds.

Although the hyper-linear cabin will feel familiar if you've stepped into an older G-class, it's now a thoroughly modern place, with a 12.0-inch digital instrument cluster, high-quality materials and conveniences like cup holders and a trunk. Tall drivers and passengers will find plenty of head and leg room both front and rear. There's still no power tailgate at the rear of the G-class, and you'll need to be in good shape to open the side-hinged door, on which a full-size spare tire is mounted. With the rear seats removed, you'll have 38 cubic feet of cargo space. Folding these (60/40 split) provides approximately 69 cubic feet.

The G63 has a standard 12.0-inch infotainment interface with navigation as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. Also included is a three-year subscription to Mercedes-Benz's connected car services, which provide essential features like remote engine start and stolen vehicle tracking. Options include Wi-Fi and a rear entertainment system with dual 10.0-inch touchscreens, each with its own USB, auxiliary and HDMI ports.
