A dramatic and complex international rescue operation to save an American man from one of Turkey’s deepest caves ended successfully on Tuesday – more than a week after after he fell seriously ill and became too frail to make his own way out. An accomplished and experienced caver, Mark Dickey, 40 year of age, had been part of a research group on an exploration mission in the Morca Cave when he reportedly began suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding and lost three liters of blood. He was part of an expedition that was exploring the Morca cave, which he entered on Aug. 30. After he became ill, a member of his party made the harrowing, hours long climb to the surface and alerted authorities on Sept. 2. The cave is located in the Taurus Mountain range in southern Turkey and reaches depths of up to 1,276 meters (4,186 feet).

00:00 A dramatic and complex international rescue operation to save an American man from one
00:11 of Turkey's deepest caves ended successfully on Tuesday, more than a week after he fell
00:17 seriously ill and became too frail to make his own way out.
00:21 An accomplished and experienced cave-digger, Mark Dickey, 40 years of age, had been part
00:26 of a research group on an exploration mission in the Moria Cave when he reportedly began
00:31 suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding and lost three litres of blood.
00:35 He was part of an expedition that was exploring the Moria Cave, which he entered on August
00:40 30.
00:41 After he became ill, a member of his party made the harrowing, hours-long climb to the
00:46 surface and alerted authorities on September 2.
00:50 The cave is located in the Taurus mountain range in southern Turkey and reaches depths
00:55 of up to 1,276 metres or 4,186 feet.
01:01 This trapping brought more than 180 people from eight countries, including Italy, Hungary,
01:07 Bulgaria, Ukraine, Poland and the United States, to help rescue him.
01:12 Many of them camped out in the cave or near its opening in a remote part of the Taurus
01:16 mountain in Turkey.
01:18 The rescue team's installed communications system blasted open narrow areas so that they
01:24 could move him through on a stretcher and used lines set up inside the cave to carry
01:28 the stretcher out.
01:30 Food, water, medicine and blood were delivered to the mouth of the cave and carried down
01:36 by other cavers.
01:38 Dickey received intensive medical care, including blood transfusions, while he was trapped in
01:43 the cave.
01:44 Mark Dickey, a well-known speleologist and cave rescuer himself, became trapped on Saturday,
01:50 2 September after suddenly suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding while being on an
01:55 expedition.
01:56 His condition worsened quickly, making him unable to move and requiring a doctor to go
02:01 down into the cave to administer vials of blood to help keep him stabilised.
02:06 Speaking near the cave at a medical tent, Dickey said it was "amazing to be above ground
02:11 again and thanks rescue teams and the Turkish government for saving his life."
