00:00Hello folks, you know what these are?
00:16Bills.
00:17Unpaid bills.
00:18Ever since I started this detective agency, I've been swamped with them.
00:21Now when I went to school, I wasn't considered dumb.
00:24As a matter of fact, I was a pretty good student.
00:27But every time I get a case, something goes wrong.
00:29Of course, I could blame my secretary.
00:32Oh, just a minute.
00:33I'll have you meet her.
00:34Susie.
00:37What is it, Russ?
00:38Meet our friends.
00:40Confidentially, we're going to be married someday.
00:42That is, if I can ever scrape together enough money.
00:44Isn't he wonderful?
00:46That, no doubt, is my silent assistant, Harvard.
00:50Hiya, Susie.
00:50Hello, Russ.
00:51Hello, Harvard.
00:52Wow.
00:54We finally got some clients.
00:55Now wait a minute, Harvard.
00:56They're not clients.
00:58Everybody calls me Harvard.
00:59Maybe because I never went to Yale.
01:01Ha!
01:02See what I mean, folks?
01:03I love him, but he's plenty D-U-M-B.
01:06His sweetheart is Veronica Hooper.
01:08She runs the hamburger stand right near the office.
01:10She'll be along in a second.
01:11Harvard, where are you?
01:12Well, here she is now.
01:14Veronica, meet the folks.
01:16Oh, hello, everybody.
01:19Ain't he romantic?
01:20Well, that's it.
01:22D-U-M...
01:23I get it.
01:24Dumb.
01:25Yeah? Who's dumb now?
01:27You forgot to tell them our names.
01:29Oh, I'm sorry.
01:30I'm Tom Neal.
01:31My secretary is Pamela Blake.
01:32This is Virginia Sale.
01:33And, of course, Harvard is Alan Jenkins.
01:37We'll be seeing you all in just a minute.
01:39And here's the rest of our cast.
04:22What's the matter?
04:23Why do they call these hamburgers when they ain't made outta ham?
04:28Give this stuff to Wayne.
04:29Don't let him into it or he gets sick.
04:31Might be the landlord.
04:32I'd take a chance if it might be a client.
04:43I'm looking for Ashton.
04:45He's busy on the phone.
04:46He'll be right with ...
04:47Now listen to me.
04:48I can't be running down to Washington every week just to solve your tough cases.
04:51I'm sorry, that's final.
04:53No, money won't make me change my mind.
04:56Next time you're up the city, drop around
04:57and maybe we'll have lunch, if I'm not tied up.
05:02I'm sorry to keep you waiting.
05:05What can I do for you?
05:08You can't do anything for me.
05:10I just wanted to tell you now that your bill's paid
05:12and my partner's hooking up your telephone outside.
05:15Be on any minute now.
05:17You can hear Washington much better.
05:22Must be great to be a detective.
05:24You talk with so many interesting people.
05:28Russ, don't.
05:30Russ, aren't you in enough trouble?
05:31Do you want a lawsuit on your hands?
05:33Maybe you're right.
05:36Say, how did that phone bill get paid?
05:37Did you pay it, Susie?
05:38No, I only have $0.61.
05:40I did.
05:41I borrowed the $8 from Veronica.
05:44Harvard, you're a genius.
05:45That's right.
05:46My old man always said I couldn't be that dumb.
05:50Hello?
05:52Washington?
05:53Look, we just had that routine.
05:55Quiet.
05:56This is on the level.
05:57Yeah, this is Ashton.
05:58Oh, hello, Ms. Worthington.
06:00Tonight?
06:01Well, certainly.
06:02I can be there before 10.
06:04Yeah.
06:05Goodbye.
06:07Mrs. Worthington is wearing the Persian sapphire
06:09at a ball tonight.
06:10She wants me to know how to keep an eye on it.
06:12How are you going to get to Washington, Ma?
06:14Well, I'm going to have to get to Washington.
06:17How are you going to get to Washington, Ma?
06:19Harvard, see if you can borrow $20 more from Veronica,
06:22will you?
06:23Well, I'll try, but it won't be easy.
06:26I'll meet you down there.
06:28Say, you know, I've got to get packed.
06:30And while I'm away, Susie, please be careful.
06:33Don't mess things up like you did on the hunting case.
06:36I won't.
06:37OK.
06:39Bryce?
06:40Yeah?
06:41Are you in that much of a hurry?
06:43Oh.
06:44Goodbye, honey.
06:47Bye.
06:54I know.
06:55A double.
06:57How do you do?
07:16Oh, I'm afraid I'm not in the market for hats, Mrs.
07:20Oh, I'm afraid I'm not in the market for hats this season.
07:25Oh, I'm not a salesman.
07:26I came here to hire a detective.
07:28Oh, I'm so sorry.
07:29Won't you sit down?
07:39Now, tell me your troubles.
07:41Well, I would like to see the boss if I may.
07:44Oh, that's all right.
07:44I'm the boss.
07:45Well, half a partner, that is.
07:47Practically.
07:48I'm suing my wife for divorce, and I need evidence.
07:52I know where she spends her nights.
07:54What I want you to do is to get a picture of her
07:56as she comes out of the building.
07:58How would I identify her?
08:00I have a photograph of her here.
08:07She's nice looking.
08:08Yeah, that's the problem.
08:12When would you like me to take this picture?
08:15Tomorrow morning, at the embassy apartment.
08:19Be there about 9.30.
08:21Do you know where it is?
08:22Yes.
08:23Good.
08:24Now about the hat box.
08:28See, my wife knows that I'm trying to get evidence against her,
08:31and she's very suspicious.
08:33If she sees anyone with a camera, she'll run.
08:36So I put a camera inside the hat box.
08:39All you have to do to take her picture
08:41is to pull this little gadget here on the side.
08:44You think you can do it?
08:45Yes, of course.
08:46Fine.
08:47Now, what's your fee?
08:49What, $30?
08:51Oh, no, that's very reasonable.
09:12Here's your receipt.
09:14Will this be safe here?
09:17Oh, yes, nobody will bother us.
09:18Good.
09:19I'll drop around tomorrow afternoon for the negatives.
09:21All right.
09:34After you, Miss Hart.
09:47Without onions?
09:49You know we got a date tonight.
09:52Okay, without no onions.
10:00Gee, Veronica, you're wonderful.
10:02Oh, you're just saying that.
10:04And that ain't all I'm going to say.
10:06All right.
10:07See you later.
10:08See you later.
10:09See you later.
10:10See you later.
10:11See you later.
10:12See you later.
10:13See you later.
10:14See you later.
10:15See you later.
10:17What's the matter?
10:19Do you mind if I ask you a question?
10:21Why, of course not.
10:23Can you let me have $20?
10:26For that no-good boss of yours?
10:28I should say not.
10:29But he's got a big case.
10:31A case of hives.
10:32Why don't you get yourself another job,
10:34like a motorman or street cleaner,
10:36something that pays you a real salary instead of working...
10:38Gee, Veronica, don't talk like that about Russ.
10:42He says you make the best hamburgers in the whole country.
10:46He ought to.
10:47He's living on them.
10:48But look, Veronica, it ain't only for him.
10:50It's for me, too.
10:51I'll stand good for the $20.
10:53You haven't had $20 in three years.
10:56But, Veronica, he's got to get to Washington.
10:58He's got a big case.
11:00Please.
11:05Well, if you want me to do it,
11:08then that's different.
11:16Hiya, Veronica.
11:17Hello, Mr. Ashton.
11:21Thanks.
11:22And may I add my thanks to one whose generosity
11:24is exceeded only by her glamorous appearance.
11:26Veronica, you know, you're getting prettier every day.
11:31Would you care for a hamburger?
11:34No, thanks. I'll eat on the train.
11:36I'll only be gone overnight.
11:37Don't let Susan get into any trouble.
11:39You know me, Russ.
11:40And keep an eye on Veronica, too,
11:42so you won't lose her.
11:46He's such a nice man.
11:48Where'd you say he was going?
11:49Washington.
11:50Washington?
11:52Will $20 see him through?
11:54You should have asked for more money.
12:02Good morning.
12:03Good morning, Harvin.
12:05What are you so happy about?
12:07No hat!
12:08Can I see?
12:09No, don't touch it.
12:10What's in it?
12:11A new client.
12:12Client?
12:13You can't get a client in a box like that.
12:15Case.
12:16Now, listen, Susie, you know what happened
12:18the last time you took a case?
12:19The cost was $150.
12:21Russ spent three days in jail.
12:22I got a black eye.
12:23I know.
12:24Don't keep reminding me.
12:25This case is going to be different
12:26and our client paid in advance.
12:27Oh.
12:28We owe Veronica $28, don't we?
12:30Yeah.
12:31We'll pay her back.
12:32Well, we might need it.
12:33Don't bust about it.
12:34It's company money.
12:35Now hurry before some bill collector gets it.
12:45Come here.
13:02Officer, would you mind moving over a little bit?
13:04You see, I'm going to shoot a woman
13:05when she comes out there.
13:07Shoot a woman?
13:08Take her picture.
13:09Was that hat box?
13:10There's a camera in there.
13:12Oh, say what's your racket?
13:14I'm a private detective.
13:16Oh, well, I hope you get a good shot.
13:19Thanks a lot. I never miss.
13:20Here she comes.
13:29Good morning, Mrs. Moorland.
13:30Good morning, Max.
13:31Where's your taxi?
13:32Get these.
13:44This is not a very logical statement.
14:05There hasn't been a Mr. Moorland for years.
14:06But he said he was Mr. Moorland.
14:08You'll see when you pick him up.
14:10Pick him up?
14:11With this description you gave us?
14:14Van Dyke, glasses, spats, and a cane.
14:17Then I'll find him.
14:19My dear Miss Hart, you don't seem to realize
14:21that you're being held for assault with a deadly weapon.
14:24Therefore, you won't be free to find anyone.
14:27Furthermore, if Mrs. Moorland dies,
14:29you'll be held on a charge of murder.
14:32Murder?
14:40Russ, it's awful.
14:43What's awful?
14:44Susan, she's in jail.
14:46Well, now what's she done?
14:47She shot her, Dane.
14:49What?
14:49This morning at 10 o'clock.
14:50Somebody tell me about it on the way over.
14:59You say that guy came in with a hat box just after I left?
15:01Yes.
15:02After what I told you, Sue?
15:03Russ, please, that doesn't help.
15:05This is serious.
15:07I wish I could get my hands on that guy just once.
15:09Well, so did the police if they could find him.
15:12Did the DA say they'd gotten any information
15:13out of Mrs. Moorland?
15:14She hasn't regained consciousness.
15:17Well, don't worry, Susie.
15:17She'll pull through.
15:19She's my only hope.
15:20The DA doesn't believe me.
15:22Well, think hard.
15:23Aren't there any clues?
15:24Didn't he have any peculiarities?
15:27No, it's just like I told you.
15:29From the minute he came into the office
15:30until I shot her in front of the embassy apartments.
15:33Embassy apartments.
15:35I've got to go now, but I'll be back.
15:37Russ.
15:38Russ, I didn't mean to ball things up like this.
15:41I know you didn't, Sue.
15:43You're not mad, are you?
15:44Of course not.
15:45I'm just worried about you, honey.
15:46I was only trying to help.
15:48I understand.
15:49Thanks for paying back that money to Veronica.
15:51Don't worry.
15:52Everything will turn out all right.
16:12Didn't I tell you to stay away from Marie?
16:14But she threatened to go to the police.
16:16It's OK for you and Joe.
16:18She can't identify either one of you.
16:20But she's got enough on me to send me to the chair.
16:22Besides having Marie Morland on your hands,
16:24you're going to have to take care of that Dave
16:26from the detective agency as well.
16:27Ah, she couldn't pick me out of a lineup if she tried.
16:29Listen, I'm running this show.
16:31And if you cross me.
16:32OK, OK.
16:33Don't get excited.
16:34I was just trying to.
16:35Just nothing.
16:36You and Joe run over there and see what you can find.
16:38Because they may have written something
16:40which will put the finger on us.
16:41Did you ever think of that?
16:43OK, OK.
16:44Come on, Joe.
17:11Someone's at the door.
17:20Get him, Joe.
17:41Get up.
17:42Get away.
18:10Hey, Harvard.
18:26What you worried about?
18:28Who says I'm worried?
18:30Well, any time you can walk by without stopping
18:32for a hamburger, then you're either worried or sick.
18:34You don't look sick.
18:36Well, I don't feel very good.
18:38It's Susan and Russ.
18:40Oh.
18:41Oh, come on in and have a hamburger.
18:43It'll pick you up.
18:53Does it look that bad?
18:55Better.
18:57She's in a who's gown and he's on a wild goose chase.
19:00What does he want with a wild goose?
19:02Oh, I don't know.
19:03He's looking for somebody he can't find.
19:06Wild goose.
19:08Say, Ronica, can you make a hamburger on a goose?
19:12Sure.
19:13Only, wouldn't it be a gooseburger?
19:15Boy, someday I'm going to get me a gooseburger.
19:18Won't that be something?
19:20Would you settle for just a plain old hamburger right now?
19:24With onions?
19:26Ain't we going out tonight?
19:28Oh, no, I can't.
19:28Not tonight, Ronica.
19:32Who was it said that the way to a man's heart
19:34was through his stomach?
19:36I don't know, Harvard.
19:37I don't do much reading.
19:41But if only your heart was as big as your stomach.
19:44Why, Ronica, I didn't know you thought that way.
19:50You can have anything in this place.
19:53Anything?
19:54Swell, but make that a double order of onions.
20:02I'll accept your explanation that you went to the apartment
20:06to get evidence to help Miss Hart.
20:09But the fact remains you entered
20:11the sealed apartment illegally.
20:13How do you know the door wasn't open?
20:15I just walked in.
20:16Maybe it was.
20:17The policemen who were stationed there
20:18admitted that they'd been gone for about 20 minutes
20:21investigating a car smash up outside.
20:23Are you sure it wasn't one of your men who bopped me?
20:26If the police hadn't returned when they did,
20:27you might have had more than a crack on the head.
20:30Could you recognize the men who jumped you?
20:32In the dark, all I saw were their fists.
20:34The owners didn't stop to introduce themselves.
20:36Now that we've got definite proof
20:37that there's somebody else mixed up in this little affair,
20:39what about Susan?
20:40Well, as a matter of fact,
20:41I haven't filed any charges against her yet.
20:43Although there are any number of things
20:45that I could charge her with.
20:46Assault with a deadly weapon.
20:48Carrying a revolver without a permit.
20:49But we know she was tricked into it.
20:52Maybe she was.
20:53And she's free?
20:54No.
20:56We're going to hold her in protective custody
20:57for the time being.
20:59If there are no charges filed against Miss Hart,
21:01I'd like her released.
21:02Are you crazy?
21:03Don't you realize you'd be putting her life in danger?
21:05She could recognize this man, and he knows it.
21:07Let me worry about that.
21:09If no one can pick up this man,
21:10it's our one chance to draw him into a trap.
21:13Quite a long chance, though.
21:15Well, look at it this way.
21:16Supposing Mrs. Morland dies,
21:18there's no trace of this character
21:19who calls himself Mr. Morland.
21:21Then she'd go on trial.
21:22I'd have no other choice.
21:24Can you release her?
21:26Ashton, I've dealt with crooks and criminals
21:29for over 30 years.
21:30And this type is the most dangerous and cunning of all.
21:33In my opinion, he'll go after Miss Hart.
21:35That's just what we want.
21:37I don't follow you.
21:38Well, it's simple.
21:38Look at it this way.
21:39We both know Susan is innocent.
21:41And if this guy isn't caught, she'll
21:42be left holding the bag.
21:45I see.
21:46But you're playing a very dangerous game.
21:48It's the one way of drawing him out into the open.
21:50OK.
21:52I'll release Miss Hart in your custody.
21:54But remember, if anything happens to her,
21:56I'll hold you personally responsible.
22:00You want any help?
22:01Yeah.
22:02Break the story to the press that you're releasing Miss Hart.
22:04That'll put him on her trail.
22:06OK.
22:07Now tell me, how did you get me out of jail?
22:27I came like this with the DA.
22:32Looking for somebody?
22:34Yeah.
22:35A man with a hat box.
22:37What?
22:38That's right, Susan.
22:39You might as well know.
22:40We're setting a trap for him to hear the bait.
22:42Why me?
22:44Because you're the only one who'll recognize him.
22:45Chances are he'll want you out of circulation.
22:49Why?
22:50That makes you very nice for me.
22:53Don't worry, Susie.
22:55The press will be with you all the time.
22:58Is that why the DA let me go?
23:00That's it.
23:02Suppose this character doesn't fall into your little trap.
23:05Well, in that case, Miss Hart, the bait goes back to jail.
23:09What?
23:10What do you know?
23:11They must have caught the killer.
23:13He must have confessed.
23:14And Susan's free.
23:15Not quite.
23:16First of all, Susie's in my custody for the time being.
23:19The killer has not confessed.
23:20As a matter of fact, he hasn't even been caught.
23:22And Mrs. Morland's still alive.
23:24And out of that, your deductions are 100% right.
23:26I don't get it.
23:27Oh, it's simple, Harvard.
23:28I'm supposed to lure Mr. Hatbox within shooting range,
23:31and you two are supposed to get him before he gets me.
23:34Is she kidding?
23:36No, Harvard, she's on the level.
23:37I'm going to follow a hunch.
23:39I want you to stick with Susan and don't let her out of your sight.
23:41Count on me.
23:42Yeah.
23:43But despite that, try for once to do what I say.
23:46You got your gun?
23:46Yeah, right here.
23:49Let's go.
23:52It wasn't there yesterday.
23:53I saw it.
23:54Well, let's have it, Susan.
23:55What happened?
23:56Well, I don't know.
23:56I opened the drawer to give him a receipt.
23:58He must have put it.
23:59Who?
23:59Mr. Hatbox.
24:01Oh, fine, fine.
24:02I'll check the serial number on the gun
24:03and find out it was one of mine.
24:05Gee, Russ, that makes you an accomplice.
24:07Ipso facto.
24:10That's just swell.
24:11I always dreamed of spending a 10-year honeymoon up the river.
24:14I'm sorry, Susan.
24:16Forget that, guys.
24:17The last thing we do.
24:18But if we don't, you can have the office for yourself.
24:22Gee, thanks.
24:25Russ, where are you going this time?
24:27Where a good detective usually starts on a case,
24:29at the scene of a crime.
24:30And this time, I'd better be good.
24:39Say, you wouldn't be trying any shenanigans
24:43like the young lady, would you?
24:44You mean the young lady who shot Mrs. Morland?
24:46That I do.
24:47And a handsome young lady she was, too.
24:49And to do a thing like that right on my feet.
24:51Were you here at the time?
24:52That I was, standing right in that very spot,
24:56right back there.
24:57Did you notice anything curious?
24:59Curious, to be sure.
25:00Not always that you see a woman shot from a hatbox
25:02right before your very eyes.
25:04Well, I don't mean that.
25:05Did you notice anything unusual?
25:07Only what I told the DA, I thought I heard two shots.
25:10Now, it may have been only one.
25:11Two shots?
25:12Well, now, it might have been re-imagination.
25:14Here, have a cigar.
25:16Oh, thanks.
25:17Uh, do you mind telling me where Mrs. Morland was standing
25:20at the time she was shot?
25:21Why, yeah, about right like that.
25:25Right there.
25:26And the girl?
25:27Well, she was back that way about five feet.
25:30I see.
25:30You mind holding this?
25:31Sure.
25:34That's it.
25:34Now, over that way a little bit.
25:36About here, this angle.
25:37That's it.
25:44Hey, Flint, come here.
25:47There's that private detective down there pumping the cop.
25:50I wonder what he's measuring.
25:52I don't know.
25:53But I don't like it.
25:54I'll fix him right now before he gets
25:56Letting you trigger, happy fool?
25:57What are you going to get knocking off that private dick?
26:00It's the thing that's working for him that we want.
26:05Now, uh, tell me, uh, how tall was Mrs. Morland?
26:09Why, uh, she hit me about there.
26:13Would you mind getting down to that height?
26:16Yes, sir.
26:18That's fine.
26:18Now, which way was she facing?
26:20Well, uh, about like that.
26:21Just about like that.
26:22I see.
26:31You know, I could kiss you.
26:32Oh, no, don't you try it.
26:33Don't you try it.
26:34Oh, here, have another cigar.
26:40Now what's happened?
26:41There's always a silver lining on the sunny side
26:43of the street.
26:44You mean things ain't so bad anymore?
26:46Things are getting better.
26:48You want something to eat?
26:49I haven't got time.
26:50Would you give me a pack of cigarettes for sootin'?
26:52Oh, have a cup of coffee.
26:54You look tired out.
26:55Well, I ought to be getting back.
26:57All right.
27:06Harvard, did you?
27:09Come quiet a bit, Harvard.
27:15I got to beat it, Veronica.
27:17Will you put it on the cuff?
27:24Gee, what a romantic guy.
27:28On the cuff.
27:30Susan, where'd you get?
27:39Hiya, Veronica.
27:40Hiya, Harvard.
27:43Hiya, Veronica.
27:45Oh, hello, Mr. Ashton.
27:47Harvard was just telling me that everything's OK.
27:50You mean he was here?
27:52Well, just for a second, he...
27:54Wait till I get my hands on that guy.
27:57Russ!
27:58Russ, am I glad to see you.
27:59What's wrong?
28:00Susan is missing.
28:01What?
28:02I went back to the office and she's gone.
28:03Well, get back there in case she phones.
28:05I'm going to D.A.
28:10Something's happened to Susan Hart.
28:12I know it.
28:13You found her?
28:14Yes, in your office.
28:16I sent one of my men and picked her up.
28:19How about that character gutter?
28:22Hey, what's the idea?
28:23Mrs. Moreland died earlier this afternoon,
28:25and I'm holding Susan Hart.
28:27Well, that's ridiculous.
28:28You might as well accuse me.
28:29I'd like to, but I can't.
28:31Even though one of your guns was used,
28:32I know you were out of town.
28:34What I discovered this afternoon will definitely prove
28:36that Susan Hart did not kill Mrs. Moreland.
28:38Russ, I'd like to help you.
28:40But I'm viewed with the evidence.
28:41Just the same.
28:42If I can convince you of her innocence,
28:43will you withhold the information of Mrs. Moreland's
28:45death for another 24 hours?
28:47Well, I'll listen.
28:49This may be your only chance to catch the real murderer.
28:51What is your plan?
28:52Well, here's the idea.
28:57Susan!
28:59Boy, did you throw a scare into us.
29:01What happened to you?
29:02Oh, I've been visiting my old friend at D.A.
29:07Hey, you two.
29:08Come over here and listen to this.
29:10And now for the local news.
29:12Here's a flash just handed to me.
29:14Mrs. John Moreland, wealthy widow,
29:16who was shot while in front of her apartment house
29:18in the so-called hatbox mystery,
29:20was not seriously wounded as at first supposed,
29:22but merely suffered a flesh wound.
29:24Mrs. Moreland has been discharged from the hospital
29:27and has returned to her home.
29:29How do you like that?
29:30She told this reporter in an exclusive interview
29:33that tomorrow morning she will place on the D.A.'s desk
29:37the evidence which will point the finger of guilt
29:39at the perpetrator of the now famous hatbox mystery.
29:44You and your smart ideas for covering up.
29:46Maria's liable to spill all she knows by tomorrow
29:48and that might mean a big house for us.
29:50I want you and Joe to walk over to her apartment house
29:52and keep your eye on it every minute
29:54until she shows up.
29:56And when she does...
30:07Russ, something's troubling you.
30:09Please tell me what it is.
30:11I've been trying to think of an easy way
30:13to tell you this, Susie.
30:14I hate to break it to you this way,
30:16but there isn't much time.
30:17Mrs. Moreland is dead.
30:18Dead?
30:19Oh, no.
30:21What?
30:22The radio commentator just...
30:23I know, dear.
30:24He just said what he'd been told to say.
30:27Dead.
30:29And I killed her.
30:35I get it.
30:36That's to make the killer think Mrs. Moreland is still alive
30:38and is out to get him.
30:39Right.
30:40Only he'll try to get her first.
30:41What a trap.
30:42And when he goes to the apartment,
30:43the police will be there to nab him.
30:45Well, not quite.
30:46Our plan is to keep the police away.
30:47They might scare him off,
30:48but I'll be there to greet him.
30:50Do you want me to go all out for help?
30:51No, I'll handle this alone.
30:53I'll phone you as soon as I get there,
30:54so don't worry.
30:55Russ, please be careful.
30:56All right, all right.
30:57But remember,
30:58stay here until you get my phone call.
31:00And if you let Susie out of your sight,
31:02I'll break your neck.
31:06Gentlemen.
31:08Hi, sir.
31:09Get down under this newspaper.
31:11Get in that car.
31:13If this is a stick-up,
31:14you're wasting your time.
31:15Don't give me any gas.
31:16I'll move,
31:17or I'll give it to you right here.
31:19Well, it's a nice night for a ride.
31:21Yeah.
31:28You don't leave here for nothing.
31:30We can't starve, can we?
31:32We'll call Veronica up.
31:34There's only one way out.
31:35Either you go or I go.
31:36Well, it's got to be me.
31:37But somebody might come after you.
31:39We'll lock the door and turn out the lights.
31:40They'll think no one's here.
31:41Hey, that's smart.
31:43If I go, you're sure you won't be scared?
31:45No.
31:48Know how to use it?
31:49I'm afraid I do.
31:58Lock it from the inside.
32:00Lock it from the inside, too.
32:02Mm-hmm.
32:30You gonna talk?
32:31It's no use, Flint.
32:32You won't get anything out of him.
32:33Keep an eye on him, Joe, till we get back.
32:35Stevens, we're going over and talk to Mrs. Morland.
32:38You're going, too?
32:39Yeah.
32:40I can't trust you to do anything right.
32:42Come on.
32:43Come on.
32:44Come on.
32:45Come on.
32:46Come on.
32:47Come on.
32:48Come on.
32:49Come on.
32:50Come on.
32:51Come on.
32:52Come on.
32:53Come on.
32:54Come on.
32:55Come on.
32:56Come on.
32:57Come on.
32:58Come on.
32:59Come on.
33:07Nice, pleasant people, aren't they?
33:09You'll find out later.
33:10Who's there?
33:41Ross?
33:44Ross?
34:10Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn't know who it was.
34:39Thanks again, Miss Hart. You're getting to be quite a little helper.
34:49What have you done with Rust?
34:50Take it easy, Miss Hart. After all, I'm your old friend, John Mallard, remember?
34:55Only this time, without the beard.
34:57You tell me what you've done with him, Ralph.
35:00Now, we'll ask all the questions.
35:02What do you and this dumb clock think you're doing here?
35:05Come on, start talking.
35:07I won't tell you anything.
35:08You're going to have to insist, Miss Hart.
35:10Come on.
35:13So I walked over to the two big mugs
35:15and knocked their heads together.
35:17That's how I got the $10,000 reward.
35:22If you don't like that story, I got another one.
35:24You ever hear the one about the mama bear
35:26and the papa bear and the baby bear?
35:29Mama bear was a Democrat, papa bear was a Republican.
35:32Baby bear was too young to vote.
35:36And then there was me.
35:38I can't believe it.
35:46Now tell us, where is Marie Moreland?
35:58I'm sorry I hurt you, Hart,
35:59but I sure made a mess of everything.
36:02Well, you guys try to do it sooner.
36:06Don't.
36:08Now, how about Mrs. Moreland, or do I have to give him a real working over?
36:18If you want to save him, you better talk and talk now.
36:21She's dead.
36:22Dead?
36:23What do you mean, dead?
36:26She's supposed to be here.
36:27We heard it on the radio.
36:28That was a trap.
36:29He'll trick you.
36:30Yeah, but you got caught in your own little trap, didn't you?
36:32When Russ gets here.
36:33He's been detained.
36:34What have you done to him?
36:35Nothing yet, but he won't bother us.
36:37Say, Finn, I've got an idea.
36:39Yeah?
36:40How about getting Miss Hart here to sign a confession saying that she murdered Marie
36:43Moreland?
36:44You murdered her.
36:45You tricked me into it.
36:47I won't confess to anything I didn't do.
36:49You do as we say, or I'll start to go to work on him right now.
36:56All right.
37:00All right.
37:12Write this.
37:15I, Susan Hart, shot Marie Moreland because she was blackmailing me for a crime I committed
37:26two years ago.
37:27Hey.
37:28That's a nice angle.
37:29I like it.
37:32Sign it.
37:48What good is a confession if she's going to be around to deny it?
37:51Lint, what would you do in her place if you'd just sign the confession?
37:56You found yourself up in a tall building.
38:00I see what you mean.
38:10We're glad to see you, Mr. Ashton.
38:12The DA got word and sent us home.
38:15Pull that shade up, Stevens.
38:16Let me go.
38:17You wouldn't dare.
38:18I wouldn't, eh?
38:21No, no!
38:24Let's go.
38:41Don't shoot.
38:42Keep him up.
38:45Russ.
38:51We got him!
38:55Russ, tell me how you did work out the case.
38:58Well, it's a long story. Where should I start?
39:00At the beginning, where should you start?
39:06No, no, I can't come down there. Well, you've got to make the price higher. Yeah.
39:12Hold it, Russ. It's the VA.
39:16Well, well, this is an unexpected pleasure. Sit down.
39:19I thought I'd come over personally to thank you for the way you handled the head box case.
39:24I must admit, though, I had a few squeamish moments.
39:26You weren't alone. I wasn't in no tea party.
39:30Did Morland confess that he tricked me?
39:32No, he didn't confess because it was not necessary.
39:35We knew that you didn't do it.
39:37Russ proved by his measurements and deductions that you couldn't possibly have fired the shot at Mrs. Morland from where you were standing.
39:42That's why I released you in his custody.
39:46Oh, Russ, I'm so glad I didn't shoot Mrs. Morland.
39:49Susan, honey, that was one thing I was positive of. You never did get anything that straight.
39:54I did fire a bullet at her, though.
39:56No, what you fired was a blank.
39:58I'm afraid he hoodwinked you all around.
40:00Stevens was his real name, and he returned to this office the night he hired you.
40:05He had slipped the latch on the door earlier in the day when he left the office with you,
40:09making it very convenient for him to return later.
40:12The camera in the hat box he left with you was rigged up with a gun,
40:16but Stevens got the idea of replacing his gun with yours at the time you gave him the receipt with your gun in the drawer.
40:23He also got the idea of removing a bullet from your gun and replacing it with a blank,
40:29so that when you fired the gun, you would think it was your bullet which actually killed Mrs. Morland.
40:35However, it was always his intention to fire the death bullet,
40:39but he didn't want two bullets found after he killed Mrs. Morland.
40:43So having you fire a blank at the same time he fired the real bullet was, in his opinion, a stroke of genius.
40:52How did a society woman like Mrs. Morland get mixed up with this gang?
40:56We don't know yet, but we do know that Stevens was secretly blackmailing her
41:00by threatening to expose her connection with the gang.
41:03Why, that dirty crook!
41:05Worse than that, he was a dangerous killer.
41:09He simply wanted to try and throw the crime on someone else.
41:12Actually, Miss Hart, Stevens tried to fire the death bullet at the very same time you fired from the hat box.
41:23So you see, it was really Stevens who fired the shot, not you.
41:26Just like I figured!
41:28Oh, Russ.
41:31You want a receipt?
41:32Uh-huh.
41:34I'm going to get out of here.
41:35Goodbye, Russ.
41:36Goodbye, D.A.
41:37Sometimes when I get stuck again, I'll give you a call.
41:39Goodbye, all.
41:40Goodbye, D.A.
41:43Oh, excuse me.
41:44Oh, Harvey!
41:47Just heard on the radio that the hat box mystery has been solved.
41:50Oh, I knew you would do it, Harvey.
41:52Even though Russ and the police threw obstacles in your way, just like you told me,
41:56and let you get all hurt.
41:59Oh, I've got to get back to the stand now, but I'll see you later.
42:04Look, Russ, I didn't say anything.
42:08Action Detective Agency, Russ Ashton speaking.
42:11Mr. Moore at the Massey Arms?
42:13Yes.
42:15You mean to guard a Duke?
42:18Be very happy to handle it for you, sir.
42:20Yes, that's right.
42:23Well, it isn't every day you get a chance to guard a Duke.
42:27You know, I wish I could get my good suit out of hock.
42:30It would only take $15.
42:33Yeah.
42:38I guess.
42:39Harvey!
