തെക്കന്കേരളത്തിലും കൊച്ചിയിലും മധ്യകേരളത്തിൽ അപൂര്വ്വമായും നടന്നുവരുന്ന ഭദ്രകാളീപ്രീണനത്തിനായുളള അനുഷ്ഠാനകല. 'മുടിയെടുപ്പ്' എന്നും പറയാറുണ്ട്. കാളിയുടെ ഭീകരമുഖം, ജഡാഭാരം എന്നിവ മരംകൊണ്ടോ ലോഹം കൊണ്ടോ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നതാണ് 'മുടി.' ആ തിരുമുടി തലയിലണിഞ്ഞാണ് കാളി ആടുന്നത്.

കാളീസേവയുടെ ഭാഗമായി നടത്തുന്ന അനുഷ്ഠാനമാണ് മുടിയേറ്റ്. ഭദ്രകാളിയും ദാരികനും തമ്മിലുള്ള യുദ്ധമാണ് മുടിയേറ്റ് പ്രമേയം. വൈവിധ്യമാര്ന്ന ചടങ്ങുകളുള്ള അനുഷ്ഠാനമാണിത്. കളമെഴുത്ത്, പ്രതിഷ്ഠ, പൂജ, താലപ്പൊലി, തിരിയുഴിച്ചല്, കളംമായ്ക്കല് എന്നിവയാണ് പ്രാരംഭ ചടങ്ങുകള്. തുടര്ന്ന് കഥകളിയിലേത് പോലെ വേഷങ്ങള് രംഗത്ത് വന്നുള്ള പ്രകടനം നടക്കും.

തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലും കൊച്ചി പ്രദേശത്തുമുള്ള ഭദ്രകാളി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലാണ് മുടിയേറ്റ് നടത്തുന്നത്.

A Magnificent Dance-Drama Mudiyettu is a ritual dance drama from Kerala based on the mythological tale of a battle between the goddess Kali and the demon Darika. It is a community ritual in which the entire village participates. Mudiyettu is performed annually in ‘Bhagavati Kavus’, the temples of the goddess. Mudiyettu serves as an important cultural site for transmission of traditional values, ethics, moral codes and aesthetic norms of the community to the next generation, thereby ensuring its continuity and relevance in present times. Kalamezhuthu marks the start of the Mudiyettu ritual. The seven characters include Goddess Bhadrakali, Darika, Lord Shiva, Sage Narada, Dhanavendran, Koyimbadan and Kooli. The intense interactions between Bhadrakali and the demons Darika and Dhanavendran make for a dramatic performance.
