A video of the beating surfaced on social media and caused an uproar.
It shows a police officer hitting a man with a baton, as at least three other officers stand nearby.
At the protest clashes broke out when demonstrators headed to a police station in the Nea Smyrni neighbourhood.
Police used tear gas while protesters threw fireworks and projectiles.
A preliminary investigation into the beating has been launched by Athens’ public prosecutor’s office.
