Cameras caught a meteoroid entering Earth's atmosphere in a flash of yellow-green glory on February 28. This event dropped an exceptionally rare form of meteorite that has never been seen in the UK before, as well as the country's first recovered meteorite in 30 years.

Dr Sarah McMullan of Imperial Department of Earth Science and Engineering, was one of the UK scientists who assisted in the meteorite's recovery. She says “Last Sunday’s spectacular fireball was captured by three of our cameras, as well as many other cameras belonging to partner networks within the UK Fireball Alliance. It’s amazing that we’ve been able to contribute to the recovery of this rare and important meteorite.”

Almost 300 grams of the meteorite survived its fiery fall and landed on a driveway in Winchcombe, Cotswold, with other smaller pieces found in the area. The Natural History Museum (NHM) in London now maintains those fragments.

The fireball was seen over western England at around 22:00 local time on February 28, 2021, and lasted about six seconds. UK Fireball Alliance (UKFAll).
