Police use water cannons to disperse ultra-Orthodox protesters defying COVID measures

Clashes broke out as hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews protested the enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions.
Police deployed water cannons and detained several protesters.
The crowd had gathered to protest COVID restrictions in schools and in yeshivas - Jewish educational institutions - in Haredi neighbourhoods.
Israel has recorded 706,416 COVID cases and 5,233 related deaths accordung Johns Hopkins University.
In response to the pandemic the government imposed a strict lockdown.
It also has one of the highest COVID vaccination rates per capita in the world.
However over the last few weeks clashes have repeatedly erupted between police and members of the ultra-Orthodox community who flouted lockdown rules.
