A young Woodpecker chick, ready to fledge and staring out of its nest-hole cavity in a Cypress tree at Wilderness Films India's Himalayan estate at Jabbarkhet, Landour, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand state, India. Brown-fronted Pied Woodpecker (Dendrocopos / Picoides auriceps) at its nest - rare footage!
Cypress tree at Jabbarkhet, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand India. The next day, the chicks left the nest-hole, confident and ready to take on the world, while their parents stayed close and constantly stood guard. Initially they were fed by the parents but soon learned to look for hidden grubs and larvae in tree bark cavities. The Brown-fronted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos auriceps) is a species of bird in the Picidae family. It is found in Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Pakistan.
Its natural habitats are temperate forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
A medium-sized, pied woodpecker with yellow in crown. White-barred (rather than spotted) black. Underparts, prominent black moustache extending to breast and black-streaked white underparts. Vent deep pink. In male forecrown brown, centre yellow, rear red with black rear neck. In female whole crown yellow.
