The Conference of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, the Pacific, Africa and the Caribbean (Aldepac), started Friday June 27, 2008 in the Togolese capital Lomé,. The meeting is part of the efforts of the ALDE Group to elaborate an even more active partnership between the ACP countries and the EU, through the promotion of liberal and democratic values. The meeting in Lomé succeeds those of Kigali in 2006 and Dakar in 2007. Created in 2005, by the Liberal and Democratic members of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, ALDEPAC strives to launch a formal network promoting liberal and democratic values. It aims to strengthen political cooperation as well as to promote economic and social progress and sustainable development. The network has an innovative approach distinct from existing partisan initiatives, by linking individual parliamentarians who subscribe to its goals and principles. In Lomé they were joined together around the topic “Africa Unchained — A Roadmap for the Liberal and Democratic State”
