Korea's oceans ministry opens 'return-to-sea schools' to cultivate new workforce

Some people in Korea are choosing to move away from cities and return to farms or fishing villages.
To help these people and provide new opportunities, the oceans ministry has opened the nation's first "return-to-sea school."
Park Se-young has more.
This man had operated cranes at a shipyard for the last ten years, …until his company closed down.
In search for a new way of life, he went to a so-called "return-to-sea school."
After about two months of theoretical education and hands-on learning with onsite experts, the former shipyard worker now looks more like a fisherman.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has opened Korea's first "return-to-sea school" to help people settle in fishing villages, and has attracted 21 people aged from in their 20s to in their 60s.
The students can choose their desired field after experiencing a range of options like fishing, fish farming and fish processing.

"By providing hands-on training and in-depth education, we can help people succeed and reduce the probability of failure."

Following the first school in Gyeongsangnam-do Province, two more schools are set to open in Chungcheongnam-do Province and Jeollanam-do Province.
The schools aim to provide more people with new opportunities and bring energy to aging fishing villages.
