Firefighters battling the central Arizona wildfires are already heroes, but, in the eyes of many, some became even more so after rescuing two fawns from certain death.
Footage shared on Facebook by the Prescott National Forest division of U.S. Forest Service on July 1 shows the two rescuers emerging from the blaze.
Each of them is carrying a small deer.
The fawns were taken to a safe habitat in the area to be reunited with their mother.
Kale Casey, a Goodwin Fire team spokesperson, told the Washington Post that the animals were, “right there along the fire line,” and, “confused and mama’s gone. There was a 100 percent certainty that these fawns were going to die.”
The U.S. Forest Service notes, “SmokeyBear would be very, very happy,” but also advises against people picking up, “baby wildlife, under these extenuating circumstances the firefighters were moving the fawns out of harm’s way.”
