Chilean court rules to return frozen assets to Pinochet family

The family of the late Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet could receive €4.2 million in cash and assets frozen during a legal investigation.
It follows a decision by a Chilean appeals court to return the money and property seized from the family over a 2004 inquiry into a budget embezzelment affair, known as the Riggs case.
A probe was launched after Pinochet’s secret US bank accounts surfaced, but he was exonerated as a former president.
The assets to be returned to the heirs of the Chilean ex-dictator who was in power from 1973 to 1990 are 24 properties, three vehicles and seven bank accounts, according to the ruling which could still be contested.
More than 3,000 people were killed and some 37,000 others tortured for political reasons during Pinochet’s rule between 1973 and 1990.
